Download Festival 2013

@ Donington Park, UK

June 13th-15th

Review by Anna Dumpe

Download 2013

Download Festival is known as one of the most exciting rock/metal festivals all over the world. It’s usually one of the first events to kick off the festival season and it never disappoints. For eleven years in a row, Download has booked some of the biggest names in rock and metal music scene and 2013 was no different. Three acts to headline the Download weekend of June 13th-15th included Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Rammstein. However, many other bands appeared on five different stages across the weekend and we were there to catch as many of them as possible. So we offer you to read about our Download 2013 adventures and see what you missed out on, if you weren’t there.

FRIDAY

The excitement that kicks in once you arrive to the arena is inconceivable. You see first bands hitting the stage and thousands of heavy metal fans arriving and gathering together. The sun is shining and beer is flowing signalizing the beginning of one of the most exciting weekends of the year.

We’re at Download 2013. This is happening…

Download 2013

Download 2013

The first band we get to catch when arriving to the arena is Asking Alexandria.
While the legendary Uriah Heep are performing on the Second (The Zippo Encore) stage. It’s an easy decision, so we quickly pass the Main stage to kick off our Download 2013 with some good old “Easy Livin’”.

Uriah Heep put on a great show and it’s a pleasure to be watching such a classic band still going strong. They’re still sounding tight and perform some of their greatest tunes they’ve ever written, like “Sunrise,” “Gypsy,” “Look at yourself” and, obviously, “Easy Livin’”.

After a great set by Uriah Heep, we head back to the Main Stage to see Papa Roach.
We wonder if there are still people out there that genuinely love this band, taking that their streak of luck happened quite a while ago. About a minute later our question is answered when we’re nearly swept off our feet by thousands of Papa Roach fans, running head over heels, just to fight their way through the crowd and get to the front of the stage. True story, ladies and gent. It was crazy.

Papa Roach set is everything you’d expect from it. It’s energetic, fun and a bit ridiculous when singer Jacoby Shaddix jumps off the stage to dive in the mud. …but that’s what you do when you’re at Download Festival, right?

Not everyone’s a fan of this band, but trust us on this one. When it comes to hits like “Between Angels and Insects,” “Scars” and “Last Resort,” not a single person in the audience is able to stand still.

After a good shot of energy delivered by Papa Roach, we head over to The Pepsi Max Stage to witness The Sword blast out some epic riffs in the best retro-metal manner. Coming all the way from Austin, Texas to perform material off their new album ‘Apocryphon’ and throw in some good old classics, like “Freya,” The Sword guys prove themselves as a great bunch of professionals that manage to sound live as great as they sound on the record.

Back to the Main Stage and it’s time to see Down.
Phil Anselmo and the boys have chosen to perform a great selection of tunes turning their set into an absolutely ripping performance. Songs like “Witchtripper,” “Lifer,” “Ghosts Along the Mississippi,” “Stone The Crow” and “Bury Me In Smoke” go down exceptionally well.

Best comments in-between songs and the funniest facial expressions delivered by the one and only Mr. Phil Anselmo; there is no stage too big for that man.

Next up on the main stage are Korn with a thrilling and rather challenging set, as they mix all the well-known classics with some fresh material off their latest album The Path Of Totality. Dub step inspired tracks, like “Narcissistic Cannibal” and “Get Up!” go down surprisingly well and the audience seems to be having a blast.

Songs like “Falling Away From Me,” “Coming Undone”, “Did My Time” and “Freak On A Leash” are sounding as powerful as ever and takes us on a sentimental trip back to the 1990’s when nu-metal and dreadlocks ruled the charts and were a part of every teenager’s life.

Next up on the Main Stage are Bullet For My Valentine.
Apologies to all their fans, but no, thank you.

We leave the Main stage to catch the upcoming and in-every-aspect-awesome-and-mind-blowing French trio The Algorithm. They’re on at The Red Bull Studios Stage and deliver a killer of a set. Songs like “Trojans” and “Access Granted” are the right party anthems to officially kick off this Friday night. As amusing it might seem to see hundreds of metal heads bounce around to electronic music mixed with proper metal breakdowns, it’s also incredibly satisfying to see so many people that seek variety in heavy metal genre and are here to support upcoming artists, like The Algorithm.

Just before it’s time to head to the Main stage for tonight’s headliners, we wander off to the Second Stage and catch a bit of Gogol Bordello’s on-stage shenanigans.

Download 2013

Download 2013

Bringing a full band of eight people with him, he puts on a show that’s as entertaining as hectic and chaotic. There’s a mad party happening on-stage and within the audience, as the band performs hits like “Wonderlust King,” “Break The Spell” and “Start Wearing Purple”.

Gogol Bordello is a gypsy punk band you must see if you’re familiar with or a fan of Eastern European and Russian culture, as hearing their music will make you want to down vodka, dance a little stupid and swear in Russian. What a band..!

After a nice day of watching lots of great bands and drinking beer with your mates, it seems that it doesn’t get any better than this, but just because we’re at Download, it does, in fact, get a lot better.

It’s Friday night at Download 2013 and 90’000 people are here in Donington Park to witness Slipknot headline the Main stage for the first time since 2009. The crowd is buzzing with excitement, as we prepare to be blown away by their performance.

Download 2013

Download 2013

Slipknot take the stage with an incredible amount of energy and they manage to own the crowd within seconds.
Opening their set with “Disasterpiece,” Slipknot manage to shake the grounds of Donington like a thunderstorm. Blasting out a hit after hit, they seem to have managed to put together a set list to please any kind of Slipknot fan. Classics like “Wait and Bleed,” “Dead Memories,” “Sulfur,” “Psychosocial” and “Duality”, which is dedicated to Paul Gray, really make the crowd go nuts.

There’s mosh-pits, circle-pits, crowd surfing and random human bodies flying around the place. The performance is stopped twice during songs “Before I Forget” and “Left Behind”, as the safety barrier in front of the stage collapses twice. It’s an absolute madness, but it’s also the best fun we’ve had in a long time.

The band appear to be in a great shape and are sounding superb. Corey Taylor’s vocal parts are sounding immense and Joey Jordison’s drumming is, as always, spectacular and a real entertainment to watch. Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan is a great entertainer, as she smacks the hell out of his percussions while spinning up in the air.

After finishing their set with “Spit it Out,” Slipknot return to stage for an encore of “(sic),” “People = Shit” and “Surfacing”.
The band really put their heart and soul into this performance and you would struggle to find a single member of the audience that was left unsatisfied.

After a sold-out show at The Camden Underworld earlier this year, Graveyard are back in London and have moved on to a bigger venue, but it looks like they have no problems filling the O2 Academy Islington!

Graveyard @ O2 Islington Academy 2013

Graveyard @ O2 Islington Academy 2013

Their fan base seem to grow within hours and it’s obvious to say that Graveyard are one of the most exciting rock bands to emerge from Sweden in the last couple of years.

Coming from a place that’s home for such bands like In Flames, At The Gates, HammerFall, The Haunted and many more, Graveyard present the Gothenburg’s sound from a different angle. Their sound is classic rock borrowing the best elements from blues and progressive / psychedelic rock. Graveyard are as retro, as a rock band in the 21st century can get.

WHAT’S HIDING IN GRAVEYARD’S NEW COVER ART?

October 23rd, 2012

When Swedish demigods of bluesy, psychedelic rock GRAVEYARD released the artwork to their third studio album Lights Out online, a lot of people were left scratching their heads and asking, “What in the hell…?”

Some of you reported seeing prehistoric hunters & now extinct bison, others saw the Milky Way; some saw Aleister Crowley, Marilyn Monroe, sabre-toothed dolphins, and giant ferns.  And no, we won’t even bother asking what you were smoking when you saw what you saw; go ahead and own your own reality.

Thankfully, the members of GRAVEYARD are taking us into their rehearsal space to show us what they’ve been hiding in the darkness of their album cover.  Head on over to YouTube and click on one of the lamps.  A light will turn on and you’ll get some answers… plus you’ll get a taste of new music from the Lights Out album.  (This is best viewed on a computer and not on a mobile phone.)  Even if you don’t click on any of the lamps, you’ll hear some entertaining banter between the band members.

If you didn’t know it already, Lights Out drops in North America on November 6th.

Listen to the track “Goliath” on Billboard.com.

Watch the “Goliath” video on Nuclear Blast’s YouTube channel.

GRAVEYARD’s 2011 release, Hisingen Blues, won a Swedish Grammy, entered the Swedish album chart at No. 1 and debuted at #48 on the American Billboard Heatseekers chart.  The band’s first headlining U.S. tour earlier this year resulted in multiple sold-out shows across the country.  A 2013 return to American shores for repeat sold-out performances is expected.

GRAVEYARD: LIGHTS OUT ALBUM COVER REVEALED

August 22nd, 2012
GRAVEYARD: LIGHTS OUT

GRAVEYARD: LIGHTS OUT

Swedish demigods of bluesy, psychedelic rock GRAVEYARD have released the artwork to their third studio album, Lights Out, online.  The new release is due out in Europe on October 26th and in North America on November 6th.

“The cover is something completely different than the last cover,” states the band.  “Our goal was that both the title and the cover would sum up the feeling of the album.  And just to make things clear, Lights Out is not a reference to either UFO or ENTOMBED… even though both are excellent bands.”

Lights Out is the follow-up to 2011’s Hisingen Blues, GRAVEYARD’s Nuclear Blast debut, which landed on three Billboard album charts (#48 – Heatseekers, #140 – Top Independent Current albums, and #46 – Current Hard Music Albums) and officially entered the Swedish album chart at No. 1.

GRAVEYARD CONFIRMED FOR SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL 6-9 JUNE 2012!

November 25th, 2011

Of the numerous Swedish bands waving the flag for 70s hard rock, Graveyard must be the very hottest at present. The eponymous debut of these Gothenburgers arrived in 2007 and was met by a favorable reception. However, that pales in comparison to the sensation stirred by its sequel, ”Hisingen blues”, in spring 2011. The album was a huge success and was bombarded with superlatives by ridiculously unanimous reviewers. Graveyard came off as the band no one could resist, with their bleak, unspeakably genuine style rooted in the likes of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and psychedelic overlords Blue Cheer and Captain Beyond. In short: it’s the biggest Swedish sensation of 2011 that will be appearing at SRF in 2012.

GRAVEYARD TO RETURN TO AMERICA

November 5th, 2011

After months of overseas arm wrestling plus a little bit of back-island voodoo shenanigans that we can’t even begin to comprehend, we’re proud to announce that the GRAVEYARD guys are finally back.  Here.  As in “gonna play the States again.”  Which forces us to ask, “America, ARE YOU READYYYYYYYY?!?!?!”

These Swedish Demigods of Psychedelic Classic Rock slayed everyone within earshot of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival this past June.  Don’t miss them.  That’s an order.

GRAVEYARD drummer Axel Sjöberg checks in about the band’s eminent return:

“At last the circumstances of life and the music industry has allowed us to return to the land of infinite highways and corrupt bankers.  Of mighty nature and excellent thrift stores.  Of micro breweries and good Mexican food (which you can’t find in Gothenburg).  Yes ladies and gentlemen, the boys in the ‘yard are returning to the U S of A in January, 2012.  A good way to start the new year and an excuse to get fucked up and enjoy some good rocking music.

“With us on our travels across the nation are the very skillful musicians of Radio Moscow. With natural talent and relentless touring they are bound to leave jaws hanging and people wondering what just happened. Blues rock the way it’s meant to be played.”

The first 13 shows of the GRAVEYARD & Radio Moscow trek through the U.S. are:

01/12/12  Bowery Ballroom – New York, NY

01/13/12  Middle East – Boston, MA

01/14/12  Northstar Bar – Philadelphia, PA

01/16/12  DC9 – Washington, D.C.

01/17/12  Strange Matter – Richmond, VA

01/19/12  Asheville Music Hall – Asheville, NC

01/20/12  Exit/In – Nashville, TN

01/21/12  Masquerade (Hell Stage) – Atlanta, GA

01/22/12  Hi-Tone Café – Memphis, TN

01/24/12  Fitzgerald’s – Houston, TX

01/25/12  Mohawk – Austin, TX

01/31/12  Doug Fir Lounge – Portland, OR

02/01/12  The Tractor – Seattle, WA

Additional dates will be announced shortly.

NUCLEAR BLAST SPOTLIGHT: 10 QUESTIONS WITH GRAVEYARD

April 19th, 2011
GRAVEYARD - Hisingen Blues

GRAVEYARD - Hisingen Blues

Nuclear Blast USA caught up with guitarist / vocalist Joakim Nilsson and drummer Axel Sjöberg of the classic rock band GRAVEYARD on the band’s North American release day to ask ten questions about their soon-to-be-classic new album, Hisingen Blues:

While touring North America in 2008, you played 3 songs (twice!) that weren’t on your debut album.  Did any of these make it onto Hisingen Blues?  If so, what track did the one you called “Funk Blues” turn into?

Joakim Nilsson: Yes, I think we played them more then twice though.  You can hear two of them on Hisingen Blues; the one called “Ungrateful Are The Dead” and the one ending the record called “The Siren.” “Funk Blues” or “Punk Blues” as we called it then is now on the backside of the “Hisingen Blues” single and is called “Granny And Davis.”  All the songs sound pretty different recorded than what they sounded like live.

The story line in the album opener, “Ain’t Fit To Live Here” and the closing track “The Siren” seem to be related.  Are they & was it intentional?

JN: No, they are not related at all.  The first one is a reflection of life and “The Siren” is about a nightmare of Roky Erickson.  They where composed at completely different periods.

When listening to “RSS” on headphones, it sounds as if the snare work actually MOVES.  Can this be attributed to Don Alstelberg’s in-studio mastery or is it simply tinnitus trickery?

JN: Yes, it is Don who pulled out some of Jimi Hendrix’s old studio tricks.  You move the sound from speaker to speaker, I don’t know what the term is called in English [panning]. ‘Panorering’ in Swedish.  Maybe it is some phaser on the drums too, I don’t remember.

Hard not to think of spaghetti westerns with “Longing” and it’s tempting not to even call it an instrumental due to the whistling.  Who is GRAVEYARD’s champion whistler and how many takes did it take to get the entire song recorded?

JN: Champion Whistler aka JJ Red aka Joakim aka me.  It was a lot harder to whistle than we ever imagined.  It was really hard to hear the pitch of the tone when I whistled, so it took a lot of takes to get it right.

Yes or No: Would Mr. Holden ever eat at a Waffle House?

JN: He used to love it, but he ate too much.  He’s more of a Dairy Queen guy.

The line “I’ve been leaving you since the day we met / And it feels like you have, too” from “Uncomfortably Numb” can resonate with ANYONE whose ever been in a relationship that needed to end long before it did.  Congratulations.  Who wrote this exquisite lyric and did they know they hit the lottery when they wrote it?

Axel Sjöberg: It was me.  I’m glad you like the lyrics.  It’s a hard topic to write about without sounding very cheesy.  Don’t know if I hit the lottery, but I got out of that relationship and into a great one.

Joakim’s homemade cabinet has become somewhat legendary.  Is there really a cigarette lighter & a bottle opener built into it?  What new features have been added onto it since your debut album?

JN: It’s a small combo amplifier that I wanted to use as a very expensive distortion box.  A friend of mine named Jonatan built it for me and we actually had to buy a customized transformer just for the cigarette lighter to work.  It doesn’t have a bottle opener yet but that is a really good idea, so I have to get that.

Would you ever consider playing an H.P. Lovecraft or Neil Young song at a GRAVEYARD show?

JN & AS: Of course. We love both H.P Lovecraft and Neil Young.

What’s the story behind the Black Sabbath poster in the video for “Hisingen Blues”?  Is it an original or a reproduction?

AS: It’s an original from the English pressing of Master Of Reality. There’s also a poster of Alvin Lee.  The posters are a sort of tribute to some of our heroes.

True or False: You are nothing without a Pentagram shirt.

JN & AS: What?  No?  Or yes?  Maybe.

GRAVEYARD are confirmed to play at this year’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival the weekend of June 9 – 12 in Manchester, Tennessee.  View GRAVEYARD’s artist profile on the Bonnaroo website here.

GRAVEYARD’s second studio album and Nuclear Blast debut, Hisingen Blues, is out today in North America.  It was produced, recorded, and mixed in 100% analog by Don Alsterberg (Gonzales, Junip, Soundtrack Of Our Lives, The International Noise Conspiracy) at Don Pierre Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden.  The album officially entered the Swedish album chart at No. 1 and trumped pop icon Britney Spears’ new album for the coveted spot.
