Morbid Angel and Grave
The Trocadero, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Review and pics by Infamousbutcher

Morbid Angel is one of the most legendary and influential death metal bands of all time, and that reputation is enforced when you see their power and musicianship live. This Fall, in support of last year’s ILLUD DIVINUM INSANUS they are doing their first US tour with their classic era vocalist / bassist David Vincent since 1996! There are many young fans that have only seen Morbid Angel with Steve Tucker at the helm, so this will be an awesome evil experience for them! Support for the tour is being provided by Sweden’s Grave, who is promoting their new album AN ENDLESS PROCESSION OF SOULS. Two of my favorite death metal bands on the same bill, fucking killer!

Scream away in the wind of chains…
Swedish death metal legends GRAVE will release their 10th studio album Endless Procession Of Souls on August 27th in Europe and on August 28th in North America via Century Media Records. Recorded at Studio Soulless, Endless Procession Of Souls promises to be yet another death metal masterpiece in GRAVE’s revered catalog, featuring nine tracks of uncompromising no-bullshit death metal, flawlessly executed by the sole survivors of the real legendary Swedish Dödsmetal scene. Endless Procession Of Souls combines the brutality of GRAVE’s last two studio albums with the groove of Soulless and–of corpse–a lethal dose of Into The Grave darkness.
In support of this upcoming release, the band will be touring North America with MORBID ANGEL and DARK FUNERAL this September/October. In regards to the album and tour, founding member Ola Lindgren (vocals/guitar) comments, “GRAVE will return to North America in September, sharing the madness with our comrades in MORBID ANGEL and DARK FUNERAL. After the successful ‘Into the Grave’ sets we did in September last year, it will be very exciting to come back to promote the new album ‘Endless Procession of Souls’, which will be released August 28th in North America (Aug 27th in Europe) through Century Media Records. This killer bill is in extremo deluxe and will show you what brutality is all about…Beware the Winds of Chains!”
DARK FUNERAL’s Lord Ahriman (guitar) adds, “We are extremely proud to announce our participation in the upcoming MORBID ANGEL tour throughout North American territories this fall. We will march alongside our Swedish comrades GRAVE and American death metal-bezerkers VADIMVON, and it is without a doubt that this very tour will surely be remembered as one of the most extreme tours of all time. Hence, we command all our loyal North American metal-demons to come out and celebrate utter darkness every night. It’s time to ignite the black flame and show the world that the force of extreme metal is unrelenting.”

Ola Lindgren of the Swedish death metal outfit GRAVE will be appearing at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) trade show on Friday, January 20th for a signing at EvH that begins at 3PM. To attend the show and the signing, you must have a badge (**NAMM is not open to the public**). For more information about NAMM and how to get entry into the show, please check out the event’s official website:
http://www.namm.org
GRAVE recently signed a new worldwide deal with their initial home, Century Media Records, and they will be releasing their 10th studio album in 2012 through the label. The band is currently in the legendary Studio Soulless working on this old-school, death metal masterpiece, but Ola has the following update for anxious GRAVE fans:
“Greetings, y’all! Just a quick update on what’s going on in the GRAVE camp. This past week, we started the process of recording the new album in our own Studio Soulless. It’s been going very well and sounds killer already at this early stage with only drums and bass tracks done. Nine new songs plus three special tracks for various releases of the album have been recorded, and I would describe it as a mix of our latest two releases with some more old-school, groovy ‘Soulless’ parts. I’m looking forward to my first ever NAMM show– hope to meet some of you there! Also worth mentioning is that we are moving the studio to a new location, and from late February onwards, I will be taking on mixing and mastering missions full-time. Any inquiries, please contact studiosoulless@grave.se.”
More news about this upcoming release will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

Swedish old school Death Metal originals GRAVE, who recently signed a new worldwide deal with their initial home Century Media Records, have checked in after a long North American tour alongside Blood Red Throne, Pathology, and Gigan, with an update from their camp’s activities:
“So back in dark, cold and rainy Sweden again after a successful North American tour. We had a great time and many great shows. Since we haven’t headlined the US since 1996 we didn’t know what to expect but I must say that we were pleasantly overwhelmed by the response from our fans. This gave us the kick in the nuts and the motivation to get back over there again in a near future. A huge special thanks to our kickass roadcrew: T-Wayne, T-Bone and The Colonel.”
GRAVE will be honoring the 20th anniversary of their debut release Into The Grave by playing a special Stockholm hometown show on November 12th. Following the event, GRAVE will start working on their 10th studio album. “The plans for our next studio album is also already in the works. We will start writing and arranging songs in November and enter the legendary Studio Soulless again in early January. We also have a very cool idea for a special bonus disc, more on this later. Stay tuned for video diaries and sneak peeks which will be updated all through the process. Album #10 is scheduled for release by Century Media Records before the summer 2012.” says Vocalist Ola Lindgren.
The upcoming album will also feature a new rhythm guitarist, due to a recent line-up change. Lindgren comments, “In this small update we want to inform you that our guitarist Magnus Martinsson is no longer in the band. But don’t worry ladies, we will keep goin’. Magnus has played with us since 2008 and did some epic tours/shows with us. We took this joint decision after going through plans for next year and we needed to address this within the band before we start the new album process. There aren’t now and have never been any hard feelings between us and we wish him the best in any future endeavors. We’ve recruited Mika Lagreen (Facebreaker) for the Stockholm Anniversary gig and he should fit right in since he already handled the stage left axe on our latest European tour. He will of course also be with us through the new album process and upcoming shows/tours.”
Magnus Martinsson also commented on the amicable split:
“I’d like to inform you that myself and the rest of the band have come to the mutual decision that I will no longer be a member and guitar player of Grave. People develop on and off the field, and sometimes in different directions, and I feel I can’t fully commit to the bands upcoming and intense touring plans. So the time has come for me to pass the torch. No drama or bloodshed has occurred and I wish the guys all the best for the future.
It’s been a great time since I joined Grave back in 2008; I have many amazing memories from our gigs, tours and travels together, and all amazing fans and friends out there. We’ve toured all over the world, toured together with great bands/guys like Nile, Misery Index, Belphegor, Krisiun and Vader, just to mention a few. It’s been a blast!
But don’t worry folks; I won’t stop playing music. Check out my new band Overtorture. Alle ska döj!”
GRAVE has mercilessly toured all across Europe with acts like Misery Index, and Obituary in the past year, as well as headlining the North American tour celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their Into The Grave debut album.

GRAVE
With Gigan, Pathology, and Blood Red Throne
September 13, 2011
Dicken’s Pub , Calgary, Canada
Review and pics by Monika Deviat

It’s been five years since Grave toured Canada and it was the 20th anniversary of their debut record, Into the Grave [Century Media, 1991] that brought the Swedish death metal band back along with Norway’s Blood Red Throne. Joining them as support on the tour were Gigan and Pathology from the U.S. On September 13, 2011 the tour stopped in Calgary Alta., at Dicken’s Pub. Unfortunately the crowd was pretty small – probably partly due to the fact that prior to a couple weeks before the show the date was listed as the 13th and 14th depending on what site you were checking.

As one of the very first Swedish death metal bands, the now classic GRAVE has inspired countless metal acts to deliver unrelenting death metal to the masses. While others have fallen victim to the latest music trends, they’ve persevered the metal ages by remaining true to their roots since their humble beginnings in 1988. They truly are the MOTORHEAD of death metal-GRAVE has never broken-up, reunited, or deviated from their same, classic sound!
To celebrate the longevity of their career and the 20th anniversary of their debut album, “Into The Grave”, GRAVE will be touring North America this August and September. In regards to their upcoming tour, vocalist/guitarist Ola Lindgren comments:
“We are really psyched to get over to the states and Canada again after 5 years of absence. It’s great to be back on the Century Media train again and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of ‘Into the Grave’ with another visit to North America. During the summer festivals here in Europe, we set out to play the entire first album from start to finish in the order that the songs are on the album. It turned out to be extremely well received from our fans, so we decided to bring the concept on the road for this upcoming tour. Since we are headlining, there will be more material than just the ‘Into’ album of course. So be there or be square…C y’all!”
BLOOD RED THRONE, PATHOLOGY, and GIGAN will also join GRAVE on their North American trek, so be sure to catch this epic death metal show at a city near you! Dates for the tour are below.

GRAVE sign new worldwide deal with Century Media Records; Touring North America in August/September; Stay total fucking old school Swedish Death Metal!
Following Iced Earth and Borknagar, Century Media Records is proud to welcome back another band under the family’s wings: GRAVE. One of the very first Swedish Death Metal bands alongside Nihilist, Morbid and Treblinka, the band initially released their first demo in 1986 under the bandname Corpse, before they switched to GRAVE in 1988 and throughout all these years, they haven’t changed their style very much, while other companions left the true Death Metal path along the way, to bigger or less success. But it’s GRAVE’s longevity and consistency that survived any trend since the late 80′s and established them as one of the most important Death Metal bands ‘Now and Forever’.
Jens Prueter, Head of A&R Century Media Europe, comments on GRAVE’s return: “First time I saw GRAVE was in May 1992 when my friend Robert Kampf (founder of CM) asked me if I wanted to get tattooed by Vinny Daze (R.I.P.) from Demolition Hammer, who was in town with Massacre and Grave. I went to the show with the intention to get my first tattoo but was blown away by Grave’s pure Death Metal blast and ended up being way too drunk to still get inked later that night. I never tried to get tattooed again, but I stuck to GRAVE and I’m more than glad to welcome back Ola and his ‘new’ guys to Century Media.”
GRAVE’s singer, guitarist and founding member Ola Lindgren adds: “We are very happy and psyched to announce that we have signed back to our old trusty workhorse Century Media Records! After some while of negotiations and a meeting in Dortmund/Germany the week before we played Death Feast Open air, we finally sealed the new deal. The future plan is to have a new GRAVE studio album out in 2012 and we will start putting the pieces together for that this fall, after the headlining tour of North America. We are truly looking forward to working together again with some of our old friends as well as all the new staff in the CM offices worldwide!”
GRAVE originally released their debut album “Into The Grave” 20 years ago (August 1991) as the tenth album release of the back then young label Century Media. As founding member Ola Lindgren remembers in the “Swedish Death Metal” book by Daniel Ekeroth: “We sent our third demo to just every label there was. A lot of them kept in touch, such as Earache and Peaceville. But Century Media was working faster than any of them, so we just went with them without thinking too much about it. Century Media invited us down to Germany to record that single (‘Tremendous Pain’), and it was only after that we started to discuss a deal. It felt amazing for us to go abroad, so in a way they lured us into their roster! But it turned out well.”
While Century Media and GRAVE parted ways after 7 albums with the release of 2006′s “As Rapture Comes”, the band has launched the two highly acclaimed albums “Dominium VIII” (2008) and “Burial Ground” (2010) ever since. In 2010 the band’s 12CD+1DVD box-set “Death Unhallowed” (including all recordings from 1986 – 2006) was released in cooperation with Century Media and the early Corpse / Putrefaction / Grave demos have also most recently been released this year as a deluxe triple vinyl set entitled “Necropsy – The Complete Demo Recordings 1986-1991″.

Wacken Open Air 2008
Once again tens of thousands of lunatic metal freaks travelled from all over the world to the small German village located in the middle of the beautiful northern German countryside. The small peaceful Wacken literally goes upside down when nearly 80.000 conquer the village during one weekend in a year. Wacken Open Air celebrated its 19th birthday from the 31st of July to the 2nd of August, whose biggest headliner ever in the history of Wacken was Iron Maiden. Despite Iron Maiden being the biggest name on the bill, however there were tons of other interesting and fascinating names.
Brat: The mass convergence of catholic youth in Sydney for World Youth Day the week Ray and I left brought a smile to my face and a feeling of warmth as I realised it wouldn’t be long until I was part of a similar pilgrimage but to Hamburg Germany and with two major differences—where Sydney was awash with colourful youth, Hamburg would be invaded by a swarm of black; and the trolley suitcases carrying clothing would instead be trolleys full of beer; songs of the gospel would be replaced by metal anthems. They came to worship at the cross—we to worship at the flaming longhorn but we all would display our nations’ flags proudly.
Tickets for W:O:A 2008 sold phenomenally fast. The special edition X-mas pack with extra goodie bag sold out before I could take a long breath after my 2007 trip. By February the official festival ticket seller was “SOLD OUT”. Suddenly the ebay market was flooded with tickets with one ticket reaching a record price of 800 British Pounds—obscene. Even in July with less than 1 month before the festival, there was an average of 5 new listings a day for tickets, which nullified all “SOLD OUT” credibility. (Brat)

Nile
with Grave and Belphegor
19th September 2008
The Underworld, Camden, London
All live pics and review by HannTu
What a superb billing! The (almost) perfect combination of bands to showcase the main strands of death metal: the technical American school, represented by Nile, vs the Swedish movement with Grave in its corner. Technicality and brutality on the one hand, dirty moshing and midtempo menace on the other. A match made in heaven, and this was reflected in the crowd; a sold-out Underworld for a death metal gig, on a Friday night when Paradise Lost/Anathema/My Dying Bride were bringing the first wave of British death/doom back to Britain at the Forum in Kentish Town. To many, the choice was simple, but there were equal amounts of people who agonised over which gig to attend. On the night however, the numbers swelling the Underworld reflected how many true death metal fans there are in London, and the people who turned up in the hopes of getting a ticket off the touts were largely left disappointed.

Party San Metal Open Air 09-11-08 2007 Bad Berka Germany
Article and pics by Arto Lehtinen
After big and massive festivals it is more than a welcome choice to pick up the map and travel to other festivals to check out what they have to offer. As all of our readers are supposed to know, Germany is one hell of a paradise for metal maniacs to spend every weekend in metal festivals somewhere in the country. For example Party San located in the middle of the heart of Germany is another good example of what a smaller festival can offer. Party San is such an interesting event as none of bands from the flourishing power metal genre were booked since all the bands on the bill were nothing but extreme ones. Especially, the return of the Dutch death metal legends Asphyx with Martin Van Drunen on the mic was a damn tempting reason to go to Party San.
Unfortunately the gods of weather weren’t thrilled about the blasphemic nihilistic death/black bands. The whole weekend was utterly wet and rainy and of course the camping field became a real battlefield with several muddy and wet tents. However these minor weather conditions didn’t prevent 10000 extreme metal maniacs from enjoying the utter blasting brutality.
In this article I am not going to that deeply analyze each band at the festival. Instead the article’s purpose is to give an impression of this extreme metal festival in case some of our readers want an idea of the feel and taste of a brutal offering a week after Wacken.

Grave, Sotajumala, Delirium?s Order The 6th of May 2005 Club Underground, Kouvola Finland
The Swedish old school death metallers Grave emerged thru Finland in May by doing a small tour along with a couple of Finnish outfits as opening acts. The tour stopped by to a small club named Club Underground in a small town called Kouvola, the club itself was a normal looking bar, but the gig had been set out in the damn tight and sweaty basement of the bar where app over 100 people had crawled to feel the brutality of death metal. The stage was also quite small and narrow leaving not that much for musicians to move there. But the atmosphere in the small basement was definitely metal as there were a couple of distributors selling their own and the dj played mainly the brutal death/black metal during the whole evening ala Bestial Mockery?.

Vocalist/Guitarist Ola Lindgren
Interview By Lord of The Wasteland
**Many thanks to Jodi for the transcription.
**Photos Courtesy of Century Media Records and Grave.se
The Swedish old-school death metal scene is popularized mainly by three bands: Grave, Unleashed and Entombed. All three bands have certainly had their ups and downs whether it be changes in the musical climate, personnel changes or releases that just, truth be told, didn?t measure up to the rest of the band?s catalogue. Grave, in particular, took a five year hiatus from recording in the late 90s after the EXTREMELY ROTTEN LIVE album was almost universally scorned by fans and critics alike. Fast forward to 2002 and Grave returned with the punishing BACK FROM THE GRAVE to show fans that they still had some life left in them but it was on 2004?s FIENDISH REGRESSION that the band really found their groove again.
I spoke with Grave?s vocalist/founder Ola Lindgren at the ungodly hour of 6:00AM about his choice of working with Peter (Hypocrisy) and Tommy Tagtgren on the new CD, the new lineup, melodic death metal and what exactly the band did during their extended break from the studio.

Jonas Torndal from Grave
Here is an interview with the guitar player and original member Jonas Torndal from the Swedish legendary death metal band Grave. Grave was one of the bands who formed the legendary Swedish death metal scene back in the beginning of the 90?s. Grave recently released their new album “FIENDISH REGRESSION” and they have held their fans in a steady grip throughout the years and refuses to compromise with how their music should sound.
