15 new acts confirmed for Graspop Metal Meeting

December 21st, 2012

According to the Mayan calendar the world was supposed to end today, so if you’re reading this it’s safe to assume the Mayans were way off base. Just as well, too, because GMM2013 will shake Dessel to its foundations and we’ve got 15 new confirmations to help us do just that: Korn, Bullet For My Valentine, King Diamond, Testament, Hellyeah, Ghost, Katatonia, Caliban, Moonspell, Unleashed, Entombed, Red Fang, Amaranthe, Veil Of Maya and Varg.

Our best season’s greetings and a fantastic start to the new year!

About the new names:
With King Diamond we’re adding a legendary band to our 2013 lineup. The Danish heavy metal band around the eponymous lead singer arose in the mid-eighties from the ashes of another legendary metal act called Mercyful Fate and quickly rose to prominence. King Diamond’s 30+ year musical career is one of the most storied in history of heavy metal, but the tale is not yet over! The most receKingDiamondnt release, 2007’s Grammy nominated album ‘Give Me Your Soul … Please’, stands as one fo the most critically-acclaimed albums in an already iconic discography. You will be treated to the largest and most involved stage production in the band’s storied history. Horror concepts from multiple albums will be used in the décor! Feast your eyes and ears on this creative centipede at GMM2013!

Korn and Bullet For My Valentine need no introduction and we’re pleased to welcome these three household names back to our festival. Why? Because they’re popular as hell, they enjoy playing here and they deserve it. Welcome back guys!

Red Fang is a catchy heavy stoner rock band. After several successful tours supporting Mastodon and a first headlining tour in 2012, these guys are more than ready to make their mark on the major European festival stages.

For thirty years, the mighty Testament has been a tower of strength in the thrash landscape. Ever since the release of their epic debut ‘The Legacy’, the band around Eric Peterson and Chuck Billy has been a force to be reckoned with. Five years after their last GMM performance these thrash pioneers are back to treat us to the best of three decades of uncompromising thrash.

Graspop Metal Meeting – MEGADETH, POSSESSED, JON OLIVA’S PAIN, etc added to line-up!

January 19th, 2012

After a seven year hiatus we are proud to welcome back Dave Mustaine & Co to our festival. MEGADETH is the second of the Big Four in thrash to be confirmed for this summer, and based on their latest album Th1rt3en, they are well and truly back to their old form!

Our next addition has been on our wish list for a very long time and this year we’ve done it: POSSESSED are coming to GMM2012! Frontman Jeff Becerra nearly lost his life in a shooting in 1989, leaving him paralysed from the waist down. He fought back and, against all odds, resumed lead singer duties. Nearly a quarter century later, Possessed and Jeff Becerra are still brimming with energy, wheelchair or not.

With KYUSS LIVES, we are pleased to add yet another first-timer to the bill. In the late 80s and early 90s, this mythical band paved the way for the likes of Queens of the Stone Age. Their two sold-out shows in the AB in Brussels last year shook the house to its foundations so we’re in for a real treat.

Savatage’s metal masterpiece “Hall of the Mountain King” was released in 1987. Then came the brutal debut release from Doctor Butcher in 1995. Now after 25 years, JON OLIVA’S PAIN will bring both these albums to the Graspop Festival stage in 2012 as they perform an anniversary assault of music from both iconic records. Along with HOTMK and Doctor Butcher, the band will perform additional Savatage and JOP songs and continue to celebrate the life and work of JOP’s recently departed guitarist and brother, Matthew LaPorte. The lineup will consist of Jon Oliva (vocals and keys),Christopher Kinder (drums), Jerry Outlaw (guitars), Jason Jennings (bass) and a very special guest guitarist to be announced soon!

The Mountain King returns once again to the Graspop Stage for this once in a lifetime show…Don’t miss it!

GRASPOP METAL MEETING 2011

Friday 24 June – Sunday 26 June 2011

by Brat and guest writer Ray Martens

After one too many overcrowded festivals *cough*Wacken*cough* Ray and I keep a lookout for small or medium sized festivals to combine with sightseeing holidays, preferably in countries not yet travelled. So when the lineup for Graspop Metal Meeting 2011 was announced, we had our next destination.

Hell is empty because all

the devils are here

Graspop Metal Meeting – 9 new names, 3 cancellations

April 20th, 2011

MORE BANDS ADDED TO GMM2011 LINEUP!

We are pleased to announce yet another batch of promising names for GMM2011.

After fifteen years of gothic rock/metal LACUNA COIL can safely be called a household name on the heavy music scene and what better place to blow out fifteen candles than on the GMM stage! Shapely frontwoman Cristina Scabbia narrowly missed out on the title of ‘Sexiest Female’ in Kerrang’s 2010 readers’ poll – much to the chagrin of many a male metalhead we might add. As for the music, Lacuna Coil follows a tried and tested recipe of contrasting voices, infectious beats and captivating melodies! (Saturday 25 June)

‘Can we make it? You bet we can!!’ has always been the credo of Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow. For over thirty years, he’s been the driving force behind ANVIL on their ongoing mission to give audiences worldwide a heavy fucking metal kick in the ass. Lips & Co are primed and ready to showcase their new record ‘Juggernaut of Justice’. Anvil is one of the select few bands whose music remains as relevant today as when they started out all those years ago. Don’t despair if you’re having no luck with the ladies; after all, an eargasm is better than nothing.(Sunday 26 June)

Static-X have played GMM twice before in the past but this time around WAYNE STATIC is going it alone to promote his solo album ‘Pighammer’. The rest of Wayne’s wall of sound will be bricked up with a number of typical Static-X classics: hard, kinky and in your face. (Sunday 26 June)

Late last year, the American metalcore band AFTER THE BURIAL released their third album with ‘In Dreams’. The album is a prime example of what modern metal should sound like. After the Burial is definitely one of the most promising young bands in metal today. One to watch out for! (Saturday 25 June)

Raw, fast, hard and unpolished are just a few of the adjectives used to describe the music of Dirty Rotten Imbeciles or D.R.I. as they are commonly known. For three decades, this American hardcore punk/crossover thrash band has enjoyed a well-earned cult status. Thanks to little gems like ‘Dealing with It’, ‘Crossover’ and ‘Four of a Kind’, their music appeals to punk, hardcore and metal fans alike. The pioneers of crossover are still a force to be reckoned with and they will come, see and conquer old school style! (Sunday 26 June)

Even more old school punk/hardcore violence with THE DWARVES. In the mid-eighties, this American band shook the underground with their raw mix of garage rock, punk and hardcore. Following a seven-year hiatus, the depraved gang is primed and ready for the next round. Fans of pure and unadulerated punk rejoice! (Friday 24 June)

The DIO DISCIPLES are coming to town! Simon Wright, Craig Goldy and Rudy Sarzo have launched a Ronnie James Dio tribute project under the moniker Dio Disciples. Vocalists Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (Malmsteen, Judas Priest, Iced Earth) and Toby Jepson (Little Angels, GUN) are to share lead vocalist duties and are two of the few singers capable of doing Dio justice. Wendy Dio announced the tribute project herself, claiming that “there will never be another Dio but we wanted to keep the music alive”. We have no doubt the Dio Disciples will do just that. (Friday 24 June)

Formed in 1980, THE RODS declared war on disco with their traditional heavy metal sound. Over a six-year period, The Rods released eight albums full of raw, powerful and uncompromising energy and they toured with some of the world’s biggest metal acts, such as Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Judas Priest and Metallica. The Rods disbanded in 1986 only to reform twenty years later. Today, the power trio are back with (a) ‘Vengeance’, their first release in a quarter century… (Friday 24 June)

Apart from THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, we are also glad to confirm THE BLACK SPIDERS for GMM2011! Last year, this new British band won Metal Hammer’s ‘Best Underground Band’ category and their sound is sure to appeal to the fans of Black Sabbath, The Stooges and Turbonegro! (Saturday 25 June)

ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF GRASPOP METAL MEETING KICKS UP A LOT OF DUST

June 30th, 2010
GRASPOP METAL MEETING 2010

GRASPOP METAL MEETING 2010

Sunday night, Kiss closed out the anniversary edition of Graspop Metal Meeting with the necessary props, glitter and pyro – or what did you expect? Four simple words characterise this year’s edition: sun, sand, beer and metal, the ideal festival mix for the metal hordes! No fewer than 130,000 metalheads flocked to the GMM arena this year to catch leading bands from all metal genres live on stage.

On Friday, 45,000 metal fans made their way to the arena. Oceans of Sadness kicked off this year’s festivities and recorded their show for a future live release. Anvil were the first to raise a few eyebrows when they played a guitar solo with a golden dildo. Next it was time for thrash metal gods Slayer to tame the masses. The su n was still beating down mercilessly when Sepultura took the stage and Saxon and Mötorhead kept the temperature high and the fists pumping. Aerosmith headlined the first day with a fantastic greatest hits set.

Day 2 was even hotter than the first but the metal armies refused to give in. They came out in great numbers and when Sabaton mounted the stage around noon, thousands of die-hards had already gathered in front of the main stage. Walls of Jericho got the dozens of crowd surfers they wanted and Airbourne went one better by getting the fans in the front rows to take someone on their shoulders. Slash gave the fans what they wanted (Guns ’n Roses hits) and Soulfly put the icing on the cake with a blazing set.

Sunday provided no reprieve from the heat. It was still hotter than hell on the Dessel plains but that didn’t keep the fans from going for it, no holds barred!

Thanks to the unbridled enthusiasm of no fewer than 130,000 metalheads, this anni versary edition will go down in GMM history as one of the best ever! Thanks for a fantastic weekend and… see you all next year!!
