Gorgoroth & Vital Remains
@ The Garage, London
6th April 2014
Review and Photos by Ashlinn Nash
The Garage queue is a lively one, with patch jackets, studs, spikes and of course the traditional array of faces adorning white face paint with variants of Carpathian forest to Watain inspired styles, all in all nothing short of a Peter Beste Picture book. Excitement and attention has been brought to The garage, let’s just hope it’s ready for it.
Norwegian black metallers GORGOROTH recently returned from Tomas Asklund’s Monolith Studio putting the finishing touches on a project that’s been a secret until now: A complete re-recording of the band’s third album Under The Sign Of Hell. It has long been guitarist Infernus’ wish to do such a re-recording, and now the work is close to complete. A final release date has not yet been set. In addition, the band will also begin work on the as-yet-untitled next GORGOROTH full-length , tentatively scheduled for a late 2011 release. Both albums will be released by Regain Records. The final date of the 2nd leg of Gorgoroth’s “Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt” European tour in November 2010 has been confirmed, making the list of tour dates as follows:
11/20/2010 Meet Factory – Czech Republic, Prague
11/21/2010 Majestic Music Club – Slovakia, Bratislava
11/22/2010 Metalkova – Slovenia, Ljubljana
11/23/2010 Mac 2 – Italy, Schio (Vicenza)
11/24/2010 Ebullition – Switzerland, Bulle
11/25/2010 Le Cargo – France, Caen
11/26/2010 Magdalenazaal – Belgium, Brugge
11/27/2010 Redemption – UK, Derby
Wacken Open Air 2008
Once again tens of thousands of lunatic metal freaks travelled from all over the world to the small German village located in the middle of the beautiful northern German countryside. The small peaceful Wacken literally goes upside down when nearly 80.000 conquer the village during one weekend in a year. Wacken Open Air celebrated its 19th birthday from the 31st of July to the 2nd of August, whose biggest headliner ever in the history of Wacken was Iron Maiden. Despite Iron Maiden being the biggest name on the bill, however there were tons of other interesting and fascinating names.
Brat: The mass convergence of catholic youth in Sydney for World Youth Day the week Ray and I left brought a smile to my face and a feeling of warmth as I realised it wouldn’t be long until I was part of a similar pilgrimage but to Hamburg Germany and with two major differences—where Sydney was awash with colourful youth, Hamburg would be invaded by a swarm of black; and the trolley suitcases carrying clothing would instead be trolleys full of beer; songs of the gospel would be replaced by metal anthems. They came to worship at the cross—we to worship at the flaming longhorn but we all would display our nations’ flags proudly.
Tickets for W:O:A 2008 sold phenomenally fast. The special edition X-mas pack with extra goodie bag sold out before I could take a long breath after my 2007 trip. By February the official festival ticket seller was “SOLD OUT”. Suddenly the ebay market was flooded with tickets with one ticket reaching a record price of 800 British Pounds—obscene. Even in July with less than 1 month before the festival, there was an average of 5 new listings a day for tickets, which nullified all “SOLD OUT” credibility. (Brat)

Party San Metal Open Air
09-11-08 2007 Bad Berka Germany
Article and pics by Arto Lehtinen
After big and massive festivals it is more than a welcome choice to pick up the map and travel to other festivals to check out what they have to offer. As all of our readers are supposed to know, Germany is one hell of a paradise for metal maniacs to spend every weekend in metal festivals somewhere in the country. For example Party San located in the middle of the heart of Germany is another good example of what a smaller festival can offer. Party San is such an interesting event as none of bands from the flourishing power metal genre were booked since all the bands on the bill were nothing but extreme ones. Especially, the return of the Dutch death metal legends Asphyx with Martin Van Drunen on the mic was a damn tempting reason to go to Party San.
Unfortunately the gods of weather weren’t thrilled about the blasphemic nihilistic death/black bands. The whole weekend was utterly wet and rainy and of course the camping field became a real battlefield with several muddy and wet tents. However these minor weather conditions didn’t prevent 10000 extreme metal maniacs from enjoying the utter blasting brutality.
In this article I am not going to that deeply analyze each band at the festival. Instead the article’s purpose is to give an impression of this extreme metal festival in case some of our readers want an idea of the feel and taste of a brutal offering a week after Wacken.
