GOATWHORE Wages War With “Schadenfreude”; Release Of Constricting Rage Of The Merciless Draws Near

June 12th, 2014

With the release of their hugely anticipated new long-player, Constricting Rage Of The Merciless, now less than one month away, New Orleans devious metal merchants unleash all out Hell with “Schadenfreude,” currently corrupting the airwaves of mega music portal, Loudwire.

Literally meaning the pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others, ninth cut, “Schadenfreude,” is at once predatory, epic, misanthropic and sadistic. Notes vocalist Ben Falgoust of the debaucherous hymn:

“This song represents the downward spiral of man at his most vile. The seething element of satisfaction when others around fail and fall, then the gratitude that this sickly rejoicing has accomplished in the overall end.”

Adds Loudwire: “‘Schadenfreude’ is a classic take-no-prisoners, leave-no-survivors type of GOATWHORE track. The band’s black metal influence is at the forefront of ‘Schadenfreude,’ as guitarist Sammy Duet builds a dark atmosphere with his open chords and sinister progressions, while vocalist Ben Falgoust explores his full guttural range throughout the track.”

Feel the wrath of “Schadenfreude”

Metal Alliance Tour 2014

MacEwan Hall, Calgary Alta.

On April 29, 2014 the Metal Alliance Tour rolled into Calgary Alta. for a very early show. The venue at the University of Calgary, MacEwan Hall, had a very early curfew for the show and so doors were opened at 5pm with the first band on at 5:45pm. The early start time unfortunately reduced the number of attendees, as did the lack of Inquisition on bill who were unable to cross the border. The three more well-known acts on the bill, Goatwhore, 1349 and Behemoth have played packed venues in Calgary previously. Due to the size of the hall and the division between the beer gardens at the back of the room and the all age’s section in front of the stage, the crowd looked a little thin.

It was a slow start when Black Crown Initiate came on stage. There were very few people in the venue and no line up outside because of the early start time. A few more people trickled in over the course of the set but it was a very noticeably small crowd. Their technical death metal infused with progressive influences was enjoyed by the audience, and a sizable amount of people moved up towards the stage to show their appreciation of the music. The songs flowed seamlessly from an instrumental introspective intro into their heavier catalogue.

Louisiana’s Goatwhore always gets a good response in Calgary, filling larger bar sized venues with raucous fans. Although there were considerably more people for Goatwhore’s set, it still looked like small crowd due to the room size. Frontman Ben Falgoust demands the audience’s response with his intense stage presence as he prowls around the stage striking epic poses and headbanging in between ferocious vocals.  Sammy Duet shredded through driving riffs and razor sharp solos. Bassist James Harvey was an indomitable presence as he delivered tight bass lines and Zack Simmons was menacing behind his drum kit. The set sampled from the bands previous albums with songs like “The All Destroying”, “When Steel and Bone Meet”, along with a new tune from the upcoming album Constricting Rage of the Merciless [Metal Blade Records, 2014] called “Baring Teeth For Revolt”. The set finished with favorites that really got the crowd moving “Alchemy of the Black Sun Cult” and “Apocalyptic Havok”.

Norway’s 1349 brought a more malicious atmosphere to the line-up. The stage was awash in red as the band took the stage. Vocalist Ravn was an intimidating force, holding up gauntleted fists to crowd to emphasize his venomous vocals.  Jon Rice (ex-Job For A Cowboy) was filling in once again on drum for Frost and did an excellent job with the relentless drum beats. “Sculptor of Flesh” started off the set and after a few songs the band gave the crowd a taste of upcoming album with “Slaves” which seemed well liked by the crowd.  They finished off with “When I was Flesh” and “Atomic Chapel”.

Behemoth never fails at putting a performance that shows thought put into every detail. From costumes and backdrops and sets, to stage presence and character, it all holds the audience enthralled. Whether or not you are a fan of their newest offering the Satanist [Nuclear Blast, 2014], which was heavily featured in the set list, the performance delivered entertained and engaged. The band strode on stage with Nergal following last, ceremoniously walking out with fire torches held in both hands. Nergal stood with his back to the audience, torches crossed, and the anticipation was built up until they launched into “Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel”. Orion was towering and ominous with his bass. Inferno pounded into his drums, though was mostly hidden behind his kit for the majority of the set. Seth shredded on his guitar with Nergal and stalked around the stage.  Behemoth gave fans some older favorites like “Conquer All”, “Christians to the Lions”, and “Chant for Eschaton 2000” mixed in with the new, including the title track from The Satanist. Their excellently executed set ended with “O Father, O Satan, O Sun” and the band donned horned masks to finish with a very evil atmosphere.

3 Inches Of Blood

Ft: Goatwhore, Angelus Apatrida, Havok

@ The Underworld, Camden

Sat 13th May 2012

Review by Paul James

Photography by Andre Purvis

It’s a warm Sunday evening as a horde of metal heads descend upon the underworld for what looks like one of the thrashiest line-ups the venue has seen for a while, within minutes of opening the merchandise tables are mobbed and it certainly bodes well for a heavy evening of metal filled goodness.

January 23rd, 2012

Blood for the Master: the brand new studio album from New Orleans Louisiana’s sons of American no-frills black metal meets death & roll, GOATWHORE, is set for release in North America on February 14th 2012 via Metal Blade Records. Recorded in St. Petersburg, FL at Mana Studios, GOATWHORE once again joined forces with producer Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Cannibal Corpse, Agnostic Front, The Mountain Goats) to lay down the ten blistering tracks for the band’s 5th full-length release, which Decibel Magazine claims “reeks of blasphemy, brimstone, Jägermeister and fire.”

The second single from album, When Steel And Bone Meet, is being exclusively premiered on Decibel Magazine’s website HERE. GOATWHORE is featured on the cover of Decibel Magazine’s February 2012 issue, on newsstands now. In the cover story feature, guitarist Sammy Duet and vocalist Louis Benjamin Falgoust II discuss the new album, the band’s numerous career hurdles, and their recent successes. If you aren’t a Decibel Magazine subscriber, you can pick up a copy of the issue HERE.

GOATWHORE – Blood for the Master

GOATWHORE launches studio update; recording new album at Mana Studios in Tampa, FL

August 9th, 2011

New album being produced by Erik Rutan

GOATWHORE has posted their first video update from the studio on MetalBlade.tv HERE. The video was shot and edited by the band and is the first in a series of videos that will chronicle the recording of the new album. The band is making quick progress and drums have already been completed.

Drummer Zack Simmons added the following: “Tracking for the new record went very smoothly with the help of excellent equipment. I played a Pearl Reference kit with Sabian AA cymbals. The drums sound like canons of doom. Every time I hear the toms I want to break something because they sound so damn good. The AA’s were a perfect match in their ability to cut through the thunder of the drums. This record is going to have a giant pair of balls hanging from it.”

Erik Rutan also produced the band’s previous two efforts, A Haunting Curse and Carving Out the Eyes of God. More details, including art, music and more studio updates will be made available as soon as they are completed.

Once GOATWHORE wraps up recording, they will immediately hit the road for headlining shows starting in Tampa, FL. From there, they will join the Exhumed tour presented by Hails and Horns, MetalSucks and MetalInjection. Support on the tour comes from Cephalic Carnage and Havok. The tour stars in Gallup, NM on October 26th. All current dates can be seen now on the band’s facebook page HERE.

GOATWHORE honored at The Big Easy Awards 2011

May 2nd, 2011

New Orleans natives, Goatwhore, have been declared the Best Hard Rock/Metal Artist at The Big Easy Awards sponsored by Gambit Magazine and held on April 25th, 2011 at Harrah’s. Goatwhore was nominated among metal peers and Housecore recording artists Arson Anthem and Haarp. The Big Easy Awards in 2011 honors winners based on their work and performances in 2010.

Goatwhore had one of their best years as a band in 2010. Their song Apocalyptic Havoc appeared on the soundtrack for Splatterhouse, a video game released for Xbox 360 and PS3 by Namco Bandai, the video for the same song was used in an episode of Last Call with Carson Daly, they toured as part of Ozzfest 2010, and they also toured with Watain, The Black Dahlia Murder and more. Carving Out the Eyes of God, released at the tail end of 2009, was met with praise from fans and critics alike and hailed as one of the best metal albums of the year. Carving Out the Eyes of God broke the Billboard Top 200 chart coming in at #190! In addition to hitting the Top 200 Chart, Carving Out the Eyes of God also debuted on the Billboard Hard Music chart at #33, the Billboard Top New Artist (Heatseekers) Albums chart at #16, and the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart at #34. GOATWHORE also carved out a spot for themselves on Canada’s charts coming in at #48 on Independent chart and #79 on Hard Chart.

Goatwhore will soon be entering the studio to record their follow up to Carving, and there’s no doubt that it will live up to, if not surpass, its predecessor.
