INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA
Glenn “The Voice Of Rock” Hughes is an English rock bassist and vocalist, best known from his work with Deep Purple, Tony Iommi and funk rock pioneers Trapeze. Hughes also maintains a notable solo career including 12 studio albums and he’s been an active session musician and a member in various projects. Between 2009 and 2014 he fronted the supergroup Black Country Communion which also featured guitarist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonhan and keyboardist Derek Sherinian. On April 2016, Hughes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple. Currently Hughes is working his first solo album in 8 years. He’s also working Black Country Communion re-union which is going to happen next year. I met a good humoured Hughes in Swedenrock in early June and here is a summary of our discussion which includes a new album, Black Country reunion and many other interesting topics. Read on!

Interviewed by Robert Cavuoto
Glenn Hughes is the newest member of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for 2016 as he was inducted earlier this month with members of Deep Purple. He now joins the ranks of many of his peers like members of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Alice Cooper to name a few. It is a well deserved honor for his time with Deep Purple and in my opinion for his work with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, Hughes/Thrall, Trapeze, Gary Moore, Black Country Communion, California Breed and his solo career. Glenn is and has always been in his own realm of excellence. In his 60’s he still exulted more energy, charisma, and vocal strength than any of the young bands he has inspired and influenced. He is a consummate professional and the epitome of a frontman.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Glenn at a bitter sweet moment in his life, he was inducted in the HOF and on the same day his father passed away. In this interview Glenn discuss his parent’s sacrifices to buy him a guitar, his time with Deep Purple, and reason why he did not perform with his band at the induction ceremony.
GLENN HUGHES UNVEILS OFFICIAL PHOTO OF NEW BAND FEATURING EX-WHITESNAKE GUITARIST
DOUG ALDRICH AND DRUMMER PONTUS ENGBORG
AUTUMN 2015 UK SOLO TOUR WITH SPECIAL GUEST JARED JAMES NICHOLS
GLENN HUGHES, nicknamed the ‘Voice of Rock’, has today unveiled an official photo of his new band that he has put together for his European and UK 2015 Solo tour. Glenn is pictured alongside drummer Pontus Engborg (far left) and ex-Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich (far right). The photo is taken by Gene Kirkland.
The band’s UK leg of the European tour stars on October 17th at the Southampton Engine Rooms and ends at London’s Electric Ballroom on November 1st. Special guest on the tour is Jared James Nichols who recently released his critically acclaimed debut album Old Glory & The Wild Revival.
The concerts will showcase highlights from Glenn’s career including Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Country Communion, California Breed, along with his solo material.
“I felt it was time for me to start touring with my solo band,” says Glenn, who is currently on tour in Brazil. “I called my drummer Pontus Engborg , and guitar player Soren Andersen. Soren had made a contractual commitment to do an autumn Tour in Scandinavia, so I had to find a replacement.
There was only one man on my mind… Doug Aldrich.”
“I’ve known Doug from his time with Ronnie Dio , and of course Whitesnake. Doug played with me on a couple of Purple songs at a festival the night before Ronnie passed away. We had great chemistry , and talked about playing together again, when schedules permitted.
Continues Hughes, “ Doug is a welcome addition to my Band, and is a dear friend , both loving and nurturing , and is a rock phenomenon. I’m beyond grateful to return to a Solo Band touring cycle, that will see me travel across many continents these next 12 months.See you down the front.”
Glenn Hughes is a true original. No other rock musician has carved such a distinctive style blending the finest elements of hard rock, soul and funk. That astonishing voice is Hughes’ calling card. He’s known as a singer’s singer. Stevie Wonder once called Hughes his favorite white singer. “I love my fans, and interact with them online, or at venues on my travels,” says Hughes. “There is no greater high than performing and to reach out to my fans.”

On February 12, 2013 Live In Wolverhampton, a 2CD set from bassist Glenn Hughes will be released (earMusic/Armoury Records). [MSRP $17.98].
Recorded in June 2009, this two-night celebration of Glenn Hughes’ music took place in his English hometown of Bilston, Wolverhampton. These nights were packed with hits and favorites culled from his rich musical career.
The first night included cuts from Hughes’ time as lead vocalist in Deep Purple. “Crave,” “Muscle & Blood,” “Don’t Let Me Bleed,” and “Mistreated” were all served up to an enthusiastic audience. The second evening, themed “You Are The Music: An Evening Of Trapeze,” was the first time that Hughes has performed songs preceding his days in Deep Purple. Tracks such as “Touch My Life,” “Black Cloud,” “Coast To Coast,” and “You Are The Music” were all unearthed from the Trapeze repertoire. Performing this music struck an emotional chord with Hughes, as former Trapeze guitarist Mel Galley had recently passed away. It proved to be a fitting remembrance to perform these songs, and the emotion of the night is captured beautifully on Live In Wolverhampton.
From deep cuts to world-beloved legendary hits, Live At Wolverhampton is a definitive live collection of Glenn Hughes history.
Hughes currently performs in Black Country Communion, a band he founded in 2009 with guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa.

JOE LYNN TURNER
Joe Lynn Turner’s recording career, spanning three full decades, is too impressive to be described in just a few sentences. He will, however, forever be first and foremost recognized as the man responsible for leading the legendary hard rock band Rainbow to it’s greatest commercial heights. Taking over the reigns from Graham Bonnet, who had only endured one album in the giant shoes left by Ronnie James Dio, Joe recorded three classic albums, DIFFICULT TO CURE in 1981, STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES in 1982 and BENT OUT OF SHAPE in 1983. Before reuniting with Mr. Blackmore once again, this time at the helm of Deep Purple to record the SLAVES AND MASTERS album in 1989, Joe helped Yngwie Malmsteen craft his arguably best work to date, the ODYSSEY in 1988.Through the years Joe Lynn Turner has also released numerous well received solo albums and worked with many great bands such as Mother’s Army. In the past decade he has, among other things, worked with Nikolo Kotzev on five albums, Brazen Abbot’s EYE OF STORM in 1996, BAD RELIGION in 1997, GUILTY AS SIN in 2003 and MY RESURRECTION in 2005 as well as Nikolo Kotzev’s double album NOSTRADAMUS in 2001. He’s also released and toured several albums with fellow Deep Purple alumni Glenn Hughes. We hope that you enjoy this look into Joe’s career, past, present and future!
