This is a review of the third edition of Getaway Rock Festival that was held in Gavle, Sweden during three hot days in July. The festival has a new organizer – the German FKP Skorpio – and we were eager to see how the festival was planned this year. We got to see some exclusive Swedish performances by Suicidal Tendencies, Nightwish, Venom, Manowar, Ministry and Yngwie Malmsteen to mention a few. Other acts that performed were Mustasch, Saxon, Finntroll, Satyricon, Behemoth, Devin Townsend Project and Ghost. Read more about the festival down below.

METAL HAMMER GOLDEN GODS AWARDS 2012

METAL HAMMER GOLDEN GODS AWARDS 2012

Review by Hal Sinden

Photography by Ashlinn Nash

Despite its reputation for a tricky commute and arguably eyesore appearance (don’t confuse familiarity with satisfaction, fellow Londoners), the O2 Arena is a fantastic venue space for the Golden Gods and ample notice that metal is still as healthy as it ever was, showing no signs of bowing to austerity measures.

What would we do without this yearly event?

Well, for a start we’d probably have healthier livers and better hearing in our later years, however many would also be deprived of their chance to postpone their Download hangovers or simply be given a reason to wash off this year’s festival mud and watch some of the scene’s glitterati forget about their day jobs for an evening.  Metal Hammer Magazine’s annual schmoozefest is upon us, and with it a dazzling array of leather, lip gloss & limp fringes.

SONISPHERE – Helsinki, Finland

June 17th, 2012

 Finland-Poster-large.jpg

The 4th of June 2012

Kalasatama Helsinki

Finland

The massive touring Sonisphere festival landed in Finland for the fourth time in a row. The first two Sonisphere festivals were arranged on the other side of Finland. For financial reasons the festival was moved to the capital, Helsinki, last year when Slipknot headlined the one-day event with several support acts. Obviously the turn-out at last year’s festival didn’t please the organization and for this year Metallica were recruited to headline. Nearly 50,000 tickets were sold like hot cakes when the line-up of Sonisphere was announced. Besides Metallica, Machine Head, Amorphis, Gojira, Ghost, and finally Hardcore Superstar had been booked to appear at the one-day festival on one stage. Of course, the celebration of Metallica’s multi-million selling BLACK album was the main bait to attract the audience.

Swedish heavy rock band GHOST returns to the US for “13 Dates of Doom”

November 7th, 2011

GHOST is pleased to announce their return to the States for their “13 Dates of Doom” tour featuring direct support from Toronto, Ontario witch rockers Blood Ceremony with Austin TX death rockers Ancient VVisdom opening the tour. The “13 Dates of Doom” tour marks the Ghouls’ first return to the States since their now infamous stops at Maryland Death Fest and The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC after some last minute complications with the Ghouls’ visas prevented the band from performing on the recent Enslaved tour.

The Ghoul with No Name comments “It is with an evil haunting chuckle that we are announcing that we are finally coming to North America. In the name of Satan, we will conduct thirteen rituals in thirteen different cities throughout the United States and Canada and now we are summoning all of our devotees to partake in these blasphemous eves of black magic.”

GHOST cult leader “The Ghoul with No Name” and his anonymous ghouls will be touring in support of the band’s debut album Opus Eponymous, which has been called “must have stuff” by Blistering adding that “Ritual is one of the best classic metal songs in recent memory,” while Alarm Press calls out the album as “wildly catchy and full of melodic twists.” Read below to see what else press has had to say about GHOST’s debut full-length Opus Eponymous.

Go HERE to check out the band performing the song “Satan Prayer” as part of its May 29 headlining set at the 2011 Maryland Deathfest shot by Rev Aaron of ReturnToThePit.com.

Sat/Jan-28 Salt Lake City, UT The Vertigo
Mon/Jan-30 Seattle, WA El Corazon
Tue/Jan-31 Portland, OR Hawthorne Theater
Wed/Feb-01 San Francisco, CA Bottom of the Hill
Thu/Feb-02 Los Angeles, CA The Roxy

In addition to “The Ghoul with No Name,” GHOST is: Guitar – ???, Bass – ???, Drums – ???, Keyboards – ???, Chants – ???.

“the semi-anonymous Swedes compel on pretty much every sensory level…it’s only when half the room sings along to set-closer ‘Ritual’ that you realize just how shockingly universal their appeal is.” Decibel Magazine

“I’m in their fan club. [Laughs] I had no idea what they looked like until I saw the video. I heard the music first and I thought it was very great — very unique, very melodic and a breath of fresh air for metal. It reminded me a bit of ’70s kind of rock that I liked as well. So yeah, I love the band.” James Hetfield, Metallica

“the best new live act in the underground scene. Not only was the band super tight and the tunes rock-solid, the Nameless Ghoul proved to be a natural frontman; he has more charisma and swagger than anyone out there!” GuitarWorld.com

“All fans of true cult heavy metal should go apeshit over this. Sometimes you just have to admit that the devil has the best tunes.” Verbicide

“A roaring debut that gives psychedelic rock a kick in the pants with a heavy sound and lyrics that will piss off the ultra-religious.” About.com

GHOST is Swedish, heavy, and tasked with slicing your soul to bits–or at least your ears.” Village Voice

Pros
• Catchy melodies supported by harmonious guitars and a vocalist with fantastic range.
• Band’s love of psychedelic rock comes through in each note played.
• Crisp production highlights the skills of each musician.
Cons
• None” About.com

“There isn’t a weak song to be found. Every muscular riff, delicate yet charismatic vocal line, and guitar solo is absolutely pristine. Most importantly, GHOST captures the spirit and quality of classic metal” Apeshit.org

“wow, is this one a monster…This is one of those rare albums that reminds you why you listen to rock and metal in the first place…undeniable, infectious charm” TheMetalRegister.com

“If spiritual leanings aren’t an issue for you, you’ll find Opus Eponymous a primer on the creation of melodic hard rock.” BigTakeover.com

Opus Anonymous is a potent cocktail of early metal like Black Sabbath or Judas Priest, ’60s psychedelic atmosphere reminiscent of Pink Floyd, with riffs and melodies clearly inspired by devil-rockers like Mercyful Fate.” Fearnet.com

Opus Eponymous has spread through the music world like a zombie plague, its catchy songwriting infecting the hearts of hard rock and pop fans almost as often as legitimate metalheads.” The Washington Times

“Now I’ve usually got a pretty low threshold for shtick, but dammit, GHOST’s debut Opus Anonymous totally gets it right. Combining NWOBM sensibilities with psychedelia and stoner riffs, GHOST has the musical chops to back up the theatrics.” Metal-Rules.com

Opus Eponymous is an extraordinary debut that slowly peels back surprise after surprise as you delve into its 35 minutes of music. Sure, the style is old-school, but it’s musically very rich, often more subtle than riff-oriented, and as closing instrumental Genesis proves, capable of moments of disarming beauty.” PopMatters.com

“Probably the top true metal effort of 2010. Invoking the musty atmosphere of Angel Witch, Witchfinder General, Pagan Altar, Witchfynde and early Mercyful Fate, this is an arcane occult feast”. Metal Hammer (9/10 points)

Hellfest – Clisson France

October 1st, 2011

Hellfest – Clisson France

17-18-19 June 2011

Hellfest arrives for its 5th edition. The French festival has been growing incredibly huge and very fast. This year it traditional location in the sport facilities of Clisson couldn’t take anymore of the mass of metalheads coming to this small part of France from all over the world.

This year’s crowd-moving, main acts where none less than Rob Zombie, Scorpions, Ozzy, and Judas Priest, with tons of other goodies in between. An excellent line-up as usual, as it’s part of the winning formula that gave success to the organizers of this event, nowadays already one of the biggest metal fests in the European summer.

The weather won’t be the most pleasant ever, but on the other hand it could have been way worse than just some strong wind and rain here and there, and the sun has been lighting the fields from time to time, still giving the impression to be in summer, after all. But as this festival is amazingly fun if you are among the beer-drinking hellraisers in the audience, you can somehow understand the “hell” part when you have to keep up with the insanely long queues to get into the photo pit, along with running all over the festival area from stage to stage, trying not to fall over some boozer laying on the ground. Oh well… running is good for your health!

Tuska Open Air 2011 – Suvilahti Helsinki Finland

Tuska Open Air 2011

Suvilahti, Helsinki, Finland

July 22-24, 2011

Review by Arto Lehtinen, Petri Seppänen Da Costa

Pics by Arto Lehtinen, Sini Huotari

The Tuska Open Air Festival has become one kind of institution amongst all metal festivals in Europe. Tuska was previously arranged in the heart of Helsinki in the central park Kaisaniemi during the past 10 years. The park underwent construction to have a better environment and other mandatory improvements. The organization of Tuska didn’t have a choice but to find and switch the whole festival to a new area. This new area is still located in Helsinki, but only a few kilometers away, to a place called Suvilahti. Having this area was definitely a big part of the whole idea and concept of Tuska. The Kaisaniemi park brought an intimate picnic and park feeling with the grass and trees. Whereas Suvilahti was more like an industrial environment with the burning and redhot asphalt under the feet.

Another thing forcing Tuska to make a change was the date. Originally the festival was supposed to be in the beginning of July, but another big more international based festival took over the date and Tuska was postponed until three weeks later. Well at least some people got pissed off at the changed date. Obviously a few band negotiations needed to start all over. Hopefully Tuska will return back to the original date. However, the line-up looked amazing after all. Morbid Angel and Amon Amarth were headliners, so was Devin Townsend once again. Cult metal bands like Hell, Bulldozer and then something type of stuff such as Jex Thoth, Church Of Misery. The festival was an utter success although the event wasn’t sold out. All in all 28000 people visited Tuska during three days.

Metal-Rules.com was present to check out a lot of bands and check out the new Tuska area.

SWEDENROCK 2011

August 1st, 2011

swedenrock2011.jpg

Let Me Hear You Scream Sweden Rockkkk.Well the annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal Rules.com team is already into it’s 11th year!  The  2011 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock in the line-up. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide and the ticket price had risen a little bit. ver these 11 years of coverage, it has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The  weather once again showed positive and negative aspects like in 2010. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die!!!

ROADBURN FESTIVAL

TILBURG HOLLAND

013 and Mid Theatre

The 12th – 15th of April

Article and pics by Arto Lehtinen

Once again it is April and time to return to the Roadburn festival in Tillburg, Holland. The line-up for  2011 looked absolutely awesome in every aspect.  A few of the bands who were forced to cancel their appearance last year had been re-booked (i.e. Candlemass and Evoken). Roadburn offered a nice deal of Finnish bands as well such as Hooded Menace. It was the sonic masters Sunn O))) who had been chosen to guide and be a curator of the Roadburn 2011. The members of Sunn O))) which have plenty of other bands picked up bands fitting to their taste and the concept of the Roadburn festival. Roadburn could be bigger and larger, but due to the cult status and the will of the organization of the fest, it will remain as intimate as it has been since the beginning. Metal-Rules.com got an excellent privilege of visiting the Roadburn festival for the second time in a row to see plenty of killer bands, smell the taste of weed with awesome people, and be a part of an awesome festival atmosphere.

Finnish Metal Expo 2011- Helsinki Finland

April 7th, 2011

  fme_logo_b.gif

 The Cable Factory

The 18 – 19th of February 2011

Helsinki, Finland

The annual Finnish Metal Expo was arranged in the old ancient Cable Factory in the heart of Helsinki. Even though the winter wind was blowing in cold from the open sea, thousands of metalheads were crawling to the FME event. Once again the roster of the FME event offered plenty of interesting names. The purpose of the event is to offer a good chance for young and talented Finnish bands to perform in front of a critical metal audience. Besides new talented bands, known and classic names were at present at FME. The Metal-Rules.com squad was, as usual, at the annual Finnish Metal Expo to feel what’s up in the air of the metal world.
