FORBIDDEN VIDEO FOR “OMEGA WAVE” DEBUTS

August 9th, 2011

Forbidden 2010

Forbidden 2010

The video for “Omega Wave,” the title track off reactivated Bay Area thrashers FORBIDDEN’s new album of the same name, is now available for viewing exclusively on GuitarWorld.com.  “Omega Wave” was created by SchneppZone video director Jon Schnepp of Metalocalypse fame.

Guitarist, songwriter, and founding member Craig Locicero offers the following commentary about working with such a creative mastermind:

“FORBIDDEN never got to make a proper video in the past. Sure, we’d made a couple below average ones over our first 10 years of our history, but never anything we were very proud of. When we finally recorded Omega Wave after a 14 year break between records, we knew it HAD to be something special.  So making the correct choice of director was very important.  When Jon Schepp’s name came up at [label manager] Gerardo Martinez’s suggestion, I thought it was perfect.  Jon’s our man!  Luckily he said yes.

“Most people know Jon from the Metalocalypse series and Exodus videos.  Being the Cartoon Network fan that I am, I was aware of his work on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, The Venture Brothers, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. All appealing to me and my warped sense of humor. And I obviously love what he did with the Exodus’s ‘Riot Act’ video. All good stuff for different reasons and he’s obviously good with effects.

“Jon came up with a wicked story board immediately after he listened to ‘Omega Wave.’  We wanted the lyrics to be represented like a thrash-hammer to the head.  Mind control, paranoia, fear, and impending doom surrounding humanity leading into 2012 and all of its prophecy and innuendo needed to be bluntly represented. Those things are very much in this video – along with some of Jon’s trademark dark humor put in for good measure.

“Everyone in the band loves the clip. We are all very proud of the song and Jon’s work. Most importantly, it represents the first time we as a band can hang our hat on a video with confidence and say that’s a FORBIDDEN fucking video!  Embrace the Metal and enjoy; the end of an age should always be this fun!”

About working with FORBIDDEN and getting to create another music video, Schnepp shares:

“I have become more selective with what I do while I’m skimping the running hammerhead towards death.  Many bands want me to make videos for them, especially since my directing work on the Dethklok concert tours.  After directing and creating an entire hour of animated music videos, I realized I have actually made my own ‘Heavy Metal’ movie.

“To do a music video nowadays, I have to time it with a number of elements: Does the band rock, can I do what I want, and do I have time?  I usually end up not having the time, since I do so much of the video myself, treating it as a stand-alone art object as well as a commercial product.  I want to be able to watch this twenty years from now and still be into it.

“After hearing that FORBIDDEN wanted a video and speaking with Craig and hearing ‘Omega Wave,’ I realized we were completely in sync.  I wanted to try some cool visual ideas, and the guys were all onboard.  I wanted to tell a story without a basic narrative, so the images constantly flowed, and the final result was an intense visual journey. Craig and the rest of FORBIDDEN were all great about being shot on a rotating mechanical board against a bright greenscreen, and kept the intensity of their live performance intact.  I’m very happy with end results of the ‘Omega Wave’ music video.  No actual b-roll; just a miasma of ever-churning visuals with the band playing and completely involved in the visuals.”

FORBIDDEN’s Omega Wave album debuted at #27 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, #83 on the Billboard Top Hard Music Albums chart, and #92 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart the week following its October 2010 release.

The band just returned from a successful tour in Australia and are ready to assault ALL senses with their performances at the Bloodstock and Brutal Assault festivals.  Their European tour with Communic and Demonica launches on September 26th.

GENE HOGLAN TO PLAY TWO FESTIVAL SHOWS WITH FORBIDDEN

April 19th, 2011
GENE HOGLAN

GENE HOGLAN

Gene “The Atomic Clock” Hoglan (ex-Dark Angel, ex-Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Dethklok) will be covering drum duties for FORBIDDEN drummer Mark Hernandez at the band’s upcoming headlining appearances this Thursday at Inferno Fest in Norway and this Saturday at Metropole Ruhr Fest in Germany.

States drummer Mike Hernandez:

“It is with true disappointment I inform the fans and friends of FORBIDDEN that I will be unable to play both of the headlining festivals this coming weekend. I have a personal

family obligation I must attend to. I want to put to rest any thought that I am leaving the band, and will hope to see the faces I miss now later on in the summer touring season.

I am very honored to have the mighty Gene Hoglan stepping up to help out and do these shows for me. Without a doubt, everyone in attendance will get a 110% Forbidden

show!”

Gene Hoglan adds:

“Hey folks, I’m real excited to be heading over to Europe with my bro’s in FORBIDDEN this week for their appearances at the Infernofest in Oslo, Norway and the Metropole Ruhr Fest in Bochum, Germany.  We’ve been great friends for eons, and Craig [Locicero, guitarist] has been my absolute brother since we toured in Death together way back when.  Not to mention that I’m a seriously diehard fan of theirs. For me, each one of their records was better than the last, and that’s really saying something.  From Forbidden Evil to the astonishing monument that is Green, I’d be hard-pressed to name another band who made the unexpected turns of their evolutionary process sound so damn righteous the way these guys did for me.  I’m also real proud to be attempting Mark Hernandez’s killer parts off their roaringly brilliant Omega Wave. Savage drumming on their latest, indeed.  My work is definitely cut out, without a doubt.  And I know Mark is excited to return as well.  If you are headed to the Infernofest or the Metropole Ruhr Fest (that just rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it?), I’m looking forward to ripping some evil FORBIDDEN metal for you.”

FORBIDDEN: 2nd N. American Headlining Tour Announced

April 12th, 2011
Forbidden 2010

Forbidden 2010

Reactivated San Francisco Bay Area thrashers FORBIDDEN, along with Decibel Magazine and Metal-Sucks.net, are happy to announce the bands second headlining run of North America! Joining them are tech-death thrashers REVOCATION, traditional heavy metal champions WHITE WIZZARD, and Colorado based thrash merchants HAVOK. Guitarist Craig Locicero commented on the bands upcoming trek:

FORBIDDEN is proud to announce our first proper headlining tour in 16 years throughout the North America this Summer! Finally! We will be bringing out REVOCATION, WHITE WIZZARD and HAVOK along for the fun. These bands are all hungry, cool and young guns and they will add to the excitement!

Something we witnessed last Winter was the economy crushing many tours. A lot of kids just can’t afford the ticket prices anymore. When we made the jump to the Pantheon Agency a few months ago, we made it clear that we wanted a reduced ticket price and all ages venues. That way all the fans of FORBIDDEN can afford to go and bring their friends of all ages along for a real Thrash experience! Well that is just what we’ve done. Ticket prices will be between $10-$15 ever where we play. Step one is complete!

Step two is the actual gigs themselves. We will be starting at the Whiskey in Hollywood on June 9th and then we head North into Canada for an extensive run into the East, South, Mid-West to eventually end the tour in San Diego on July 2nd. These will be raw, intimate and bare boned Thrash Metal shows. Exactly how we started it. How it was meant to be!

So tell your friends, grab your kids…whatever it takes. You are ALL invited to join us on this Omega Wave!”

FORBIDDEN: SHOW IN LIMA, PERU CANCELLED

March 31st, 2011
Forbidden 2010

Forbidden

Reactivated San Francisco Bay Area thrashers FORBIDDEN have issued the following statement regarding tonight’s show in Lima, Peru:

“It breaks our hearts that we have to inform the FORBIDDEN fans of Lima that we can not make tonight’s gig at Auditorio Derrama Magisterial.

“Acido Promotions GmbH booked our tour for South America but did not have our travel plans in order which has caused us to miss our shows in South America.  We were able to reschedule all the shows directly with the promoters with the exception of our Lima, Peru show, which we found impossible to reschedule and must cancel with deep regret.

“Acido Promotions brought FORBIDDEN out to South America based on lies and deceit and abandoned us owing FORBIDDEN and all the South American promoters money.

“We want to make this clear that this is not the fault of the other promoters of South America.  As a matter of fact, after being abandoned by Acido Promotions GmbH at the Santiago airport, it was Chargola Productions in Chile who came to our rescue and helped us reschedule the show for the people in Santiago which was an amazing show after all!  We would also like to thank ICARUS MUSIC in Buenos Aires for coming to our rescue and made the show happen in Buenos Aires which was another success.

“Despite great effort from Icarus in Peru, there is no way to make our gig in Lima this time. We will make it up to our fans as soon as we possibly can. We are all gutted about missing what would have been such an amazing gig.”

FORBIDDEN 2010 features Russ Anderson on vocals, Craig Locicero on guitar, Steve Smyth on guitar, Matt Camacho on bass and Mark Hernandez on drums.

“THE METAL MOTIVATOR” GUESTS ON CRAIG LOCICERO’S OMEGA WAVE PODCAST

March 18th, 2011

FORBIDDEN guitarist & songwriter Craig Locicero checks in about his latest Ωmega Wave Podcast guest, C.J. Ortiz:

“This week’s show may be our most relevant program so far. With all of the devastation, fear. and suffering happening in different parts of the world, Bill and I thought it was important to change things up.  We need something positive now.  Enter C.J. Ortiz of Metalmotivation.com!

“We stumbled upon C.J. via one of our listeners who had sent us a link to one of his daily motivational podcasts. This particular podcast was directed towards the Supreme Court ruling in favor of Reverend Phelps and his hate spewing, ignorant diatribes and followers being able to continue their protesting against gay rights.  ‘Don’t hate the haters’ he said among many other logical and insightful things.  It sounds like simple and useful advice, but it’s all about his conviction and delivery.  C.J. Ortiz is highly educated and a gifted communicator.  He may be able to help some metalheads keep their heads up in these most difficult times. I highly recommend everyone give the show a listen and take from it what you will.

“For next week’s show, I will be with FORBIDDEN in South America and will try at all costs to do our show live on location!”

Tune in to the Ωmega Wave Show here.  Read more about “The Metal Motivator” here.

Locicero and his co-host “Barbwire” Bill Shields (former host for “In the Dark” Radio, professional wrestler, and current Ordained Minister of the Collective Conscious) take questions and speak off-the-cuff on whatever news-related and controversial subject may come up. The goals of the Omega Wave Podcast are two-fold:

1) To speak to different compelling and controversial lyricists in Metal and Hard Rock weekly.  They will be asked about their motivation, their craft, and what exactly inspires them in these challenging times to do what they do.  Their thoughts & opinions on the most current affairs and intensely debated issues will also be discussed.

2) Have listeners sit in on a real conversation between good friends without censorship watering those thoughts down.  Hosts Bill and Craig will take questions & topic suggestions live and do not filter their reactions to them. These conversations can get very heated at times, depending on the topic.

Previous guests include: Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth, Sons of Liberty), Henrik Ohlsson (Scar Symmetry), and Neil Fallon (Clutch, the Company Band).  Future guests will include Michael Amott & Angela Gossow of Arch Enemy, Dave Brockie of Gwar, Maurizio Iacono of Kataklysm, Charles Elliott of Abysmal Dawn and many more.

FORBIDDEN’S STEVE SMYTH: SIGNATURE 6- & 7-STRING BC RICH GUITARS NOW AVAILABLE!

March 4th, 2011

FORBIDDEN guitarist Steve Smyth is pleased to announce the availability of his signature 6- & 7-string BC Rich “Bich” guitar, which debuted two months ago at NAMM 2011.

“After nearly 3 years of effort put in, I am happy to announce that my BC Rich signature series guitars have been released.  I chose everything for these guitars, right down to the finish, and I’m very happy to say my wishes have been met!  I have been using the Signature 6 series – this absolute monster – with the mighty FORBIDDEN for the last few years, and I honestly have to say it slays every other guitar I have, straight up!  Solid, consistent tone across all the dynamics I need; the feel is incredible plus it’s really light for having the heavy woods it has.  The Signature 7 series version of the guitar has been released as well. This has the same woods as the 6, but with 81-7 and 707 pickups, Grover tuners, and a Floyd Rose tremolo as well.  I’m loving this thing… it hasn’t left my hands since I got it!  This guitar will see use with my new metal band Firehead (debut in late 2011), as well as featured heavily on the new album and live performances coming this year from The EssenEss Project.  I hope you’ll enjoy these guitars as much as I do.  Check them out!”

Specs for the 6-string Bich:

• Neck Through Construction
• Mahogany Body
• Maple Neck
• Grover® Rotomatic Tuners
• Ebony Fretboard

• 24 Jumbo Frets

• 25 1/2″ Scale

• BC Rich Quad bridge

• EMG® 81 and 85 Pickups

• 2 Volume, 1 Tone, and 1 Three-way Toggle Controls

Specs for the 7-string Bich:

• Neck Through Construction
• Mahogany Body
• Maple Neck
• Grover® Rotomatic Tuners

• Ebony Fretboard

• 24 Jumbo Frets

Best of 2010

January 3rd, 2011

Best of 2010

As always, the top albums are for releases from 2010 that are full albums (no EP’s or demos). They also have to be new studio albums for 2010, not re-recordings, re-releases, cover songs, or live material. Below the combined TOP 30 are links to each staff members personal "best of" lists which besides the top albums contains such things as best new band, best DVD/Blu-Ray, disappointments of 2010, greatest hopes for 2011, personal metal discovery of 2010, and various other metal-related categories. Enjoy!

The Top 30  Heavy Metal Albums of 2010

(Click the album cover to read our review.

If no review is available the link it to the band’s MySpace page.)

1. Accept – Blood of the Nations

ACCEPT

Wolf Hoffman’s reaction to the band’s #1 placement in our list was:

"Sensational!!! We are so happy about this reaction by the fans. This last year has been nothing short of phenomenal for Accept."

BLOOD OF THE NATIONS is a fantastic album, so fantastic that it very easily came out on top when we compiled our best of 2010 list! In the media, producer Andy Sneap said when he worked with the band he made them go back and listen to the 80’s albums, and it worked. Accept have delivered the album they needed to make. Accept reformed with a vocalist who is just as good as Udo Dirkschneider. Vocalist Mark Tornillo rages through the songs with power and charisma, without being a clone. Accept have proven to the world in 2010 they are still relevant, powerful, uncompromising and most of all entertaining. Welcome back!

2. Blind Guardian – At the Edge of Time

Blind Guardian

Easily the best and strongest Blind Guardian album since NIGHTFALL IN MIDDLE-EARTH with a maximum of variety and everything that has turned these guys from Krefeld into what they are today: one of Germany’s most successful and influential metal bands. With AT THE EDGE OF TIME, Blind Guardian returned to the fold in total triumph. This is an album to be enjoyed for numerous repeat listens. Newer fans should eat it up, and older fans should be appeased with the band’s renewed emphasis on their thrashy roots.

3. Ratt– Infestation

Ratt

Ratt is Metal. Always have been and likely always will be. From their appearance on the very first Metal Massacre compilation in 1981 alongside the likes of Metallica, Malice, and Bitch, to the new 2010 album, Ratt have always been among the heaviest of the so-called "hair metal" bands. So despite what the revisionists may think, Ratt have a firm spot in the development and evolution of the Heavy Metal genre and have earned their spot in this year’s list. Sonically the Ratt Pack is back! The band had stated they wanted a real up-tempo record and distinctly aimed for the classic sound. They nailed it. It’s all there, the swagger and slight sneer of Pearcy voice, the fluid and fiery soloing of DeMartini’s axe-work, the complimentary work of Cavazo…it’s a beautiful thing to behold!

4. Triptykon – Eparistera Daimones

Triptykon

Thomas Gabriel Fischer (AKA Tom G. Warrior) has nothing to prove to anyone. As the principal architect behind Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, Fischer’s body of work is the reason that many bands exist today. Two years since Celtic Frost’s very public dissolution, Fischer could have easily opted to rest on his laurels and bask in the afterglow of his evil legacy, but nooooo. To the contrary, Fischer has assembled a new band and recorded an album of new material that’s arguably some of the best in his career. Triptykon is the band, EPARISTERA DAIMONES is the album, and yes – it’s as good as Fischer has promised it to be!

5. Melechesh –  The Epigenesis

amon.jpg

Black/Death/Middle Eastern "Mesopotamian Metal" extremists made a big impact this year. Originally from IsraHELL and now based out of the Netherlands, the band has been around in some form since 1993. That Melechesh are able to maintain the album’s early momentum through to the record’s dying moments makes what they have achieved with THE EPIGENESIS that much more remarkable. Unlike so much of what passes for modern-day extremity, every one of this disc’s eleven tracks bristles with its own identity and design. It will demand a lot of attention – this definitely isn’t the record to whip out at your next kegger – but the rewards far outweigh the investment. Absolutely superb in every way.

6.  Helloween – 7 Sinners

Helloween

Helloween are very comfortable right now. They are back on a major label, the line-up has been stable for probably the longest stretch in the bands history, and they have fallen into a great pattern of releasing a studio album every couple of years (right around Halloween naturally). Relaxed, confident and mature the band have nothing to prove but instead of delivering a complacent record, the band have delivered the fastest, heaviest album of their career. It’s their 26th release over and 13th full-length studio album of all-new, original material. Lucky #13 for the band sees a crowning achievement with 13 killer cuts spread across the hour. Helloween have delivered a masterpiece. It will quickly silence all the fans who couldn’t stomach UNARMED from earlier this year.

7. OverKill – Ironbound

OverKill

The veteran New Jersey boys return with a compelling slab of unmistakeably old school thrash that is tinged with a fine mix of groove, progressiveness and melody that separates Overkill from the multitudes of carbon-copy thrashers out there. This is modern thrash the way it should be played: roots in the 80s but with its direction and ambition befitting a metal scene on the cusp of its 30-year anniversary. It’s a beautiful thing to behold: while most of their contemporaries have split up or sold out, Overkill are still doing their thing, updating and improving but never forgetting where they came from.

8.  Nevermore – The Obsidian Conspiracy

Nevermore

Five years – that’s how long Nevermore made us wait for a sequel to the still awe-inspiring THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOUR. By modern-day standards that’s an absolute eternity, the length of which only the likes of Slayer or Metallica could reasonably be expected to get away with. Regardless of delay, the album is a perfect example of heavy metal in its purest, most intelligent and provocative form. As always the band defies classification with elements of power, thrash, prog, blended together into a mixture that is uniquely Nevermore.

9. Sabaton – Coat of Arms

SABATON

Sweden’s war metallers, Sabaton, have been consistently moving to the forefront of the power metal movement in the last few years. COAT OF ARMS continues Sabaton’s fine tradition of power metal with bite. The band is in fine form throughout and do not disappoint. You listen to a Sabaton album for the pounding marches (“Uprising”) the fast assaults (“Midway”, “Screaming Eagles”), and the catchy hooks and choruses (every damn song!) and COAT OF ARMS has it all!

10. Halford – IV – Made of Metal

HALFORD

Finally! Halford was really overdue. Despite having a skeleton of a catalog, Halford really needed to put some meat on the bones of his solo career. MADE OF METAL is really only the third studio album of all new material in over 10 years. Sure the catalog looks impressive but in reality, live albums, demo albums, EP’s, digital only live albums and novelty Christmas albums are just filler. Halford needed to deliver the goods and we’re pleased to say he is still made of Metal. The album clocks in at a whopping 14 tracks at over an hour it is his longest solo album to date.
