One of the most respected young guitarists in heavy metal, GUS G, has returned with an incredible slab of heavy metal. Today, FIREWIND releases ‘Days of Defiance’ in stores everywhere which features the incredible shredding of GUS G and the powerful, soaring voice of Apollo Papathanasio which had made FIREWIND one of the most talked about bands in their scene ever since signing to Century Media years ago.
‘Days of Defiance’ features the incredible single “World on Fire” (available here – and below): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4pRK7IMKR0), charged by some of the fastest and heaviest playing in the band’s history. While the CDs are in store everywhere, fans can take home special packaging such as digibooks, vinyl and more exclusively through CMDistro.com.
FIREWIND is also landing on American soil in a few short days for a special engagement of four shows. Featuring support from POWERGLOVE and THE ABSENCE, these shows will offer North America’s only chance to see FIREWIND in 2010. Don’t miss out!
Hot off the heels of GUS G’s recent campaign as the new guitarist for OZZY OSBOURNE, Gus’ longtime traditional heavy metal band FIREWIND is back with a new effort. ‘Days of Defiance’ is out on October 26 via Century Media and offers the most ferocious tunes yet from the Greek Gods of rock!
‘Days of Defiance’ features GUS G at his best, playing fast and furiously with his bandmates as Apollo Papathanasio soars above it with his epic vocal performance, which has started to gain comparisons to the mighty Bruce Dickinson himself. Now, FIREWIND has posted a video to take you through a track-by-track breakdown of the new record. Gus and Apollo talk about their inspirations, playing techniques and recording process for each song on the album to give you a better sense of what is to come on October 26.
FIREWIND currently have pre-orders for the album available exclusively through CMDistro.com. The Greek melodic metal phenomenon FIREWIND, led by the young guitar sensation Gus G., have returned with the scathing new studio album Days of Defiance, which is easily their defining musical moment. The disc is set for an October 25th release worldwide. Days of Defiance is a truly ambitious and dynamic opus featuring some of the most brilliant guitar playing the genre has seen in many years.
FIREWIND will celebrate the album’s release with a limited number of special North American headlining shows. The trek, which kicks off on Nov. 4th and runs through Nov. 7th, features Powerglove and The Absence in the support slots. Gus G. states: “The video for ‘World on Fire’ was shot entirely on green screen and I think this time Patric Ullaeus has outdone himself! The concept is based on the album cover artwork and it’s something we’re doing for the first time on a video of ours. There’s a barbaric vibe to it, lots of fire, metal warriors and even a Valkyrie. We’re very pleased with the final result and we believe this is our best video yet. Check it out and let the FIREWIND rage on.
“We are also very happy to announce four special album release shows in North America this fall in support of our new record, Days of Defiance. It’s been awhile since FIREWIND played North America, as our last tour was Spring/Summer 2008.
(New York, NY) — POWERGLOVE are pleased to announce their participation in a short run of tour dates with power metal titans FIREWIND led by the young guitar sensation Gus G (OZZY OSBOURNE) and THEABSENCE. Dates are scattered through out the northeast and Canada. “We’re very excited to go out on this run. We’re all big fans of Firewind, and the blazing guitar work of Gus G. And with a powerful band like The Absence on board, this should be a diverse and fun lineup. It will be our first time on the road after the release of our new album Saturday Morning Apocalypse, and we have some new shit in store for you!”says drummer Bassil Silver.
November 4th – Volume 11 Raleigh, NC
November 5th – Jaxx West Springfield, VA
November 6th – The Gramercy New York, NY
November 7th – Les Foufounes Electriques Montreal, Quebec, CANADA
The band recently released the morphing album cover and video teaser surrounding their next record “Saturday Morning Apocalypse” which is due out September 28th, 2010 via eOne Music. Combining power metal style with nostalgic theme songs of popular 80’s and 90’s cartoon and television theme songs, the band has tapped into the minds of generation X and Y with their most interesting release to date.
“Saturday Morning Apocalypse came out brighter and darker, faster and slower than our previous releases,” says Silver. This is the band’s first record with eOne Music and this time they’re taking their songs in a new direction. The band had previously stuck to 8 bit Nintendo game theme songs. However, this new release is their take on Saturday morning cartoons and movies that anyone who’s grown up in the 80’s will immediately recognize. Silver concludes with, “No matter what we write, we know all the comments will be about how bizarre we look, how ridiculous this track list is, and the fact that we somehow got Tony Kakko to sing the Pokemon theme for us. We would tell you how clown-rapingly awesome it is, but you can decide that for yourself when the album comes out in September.”
A full track listing of their power metal renditions can be found below.
2. Gotta Catch Em All
3. The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest
4. This Is Halloween
7. Inspector Gadget
8. Heffalumps and Woozles (Winnie The Pooh)
9. The Simpsons (Feat. Tony Kakko)
10. The Flinstones 11. Gotta Catch Em All (Feat. Tony Kakko)
“We are POWERGLOVE and we are here to f*ck with your childhood!” proclaims the band at the beginning of their live shows. After finding success mining the brains of the A.D.D. driven video game generation with songs like “Tetris,” POWERGLOVE have set their sights on the inner child in all of us. To this end, the band has set its blasters from stun to kill; it’s target: the world! The band has recently completed two separate, successful, tours with HAMMERFALL and SONATAARTICA. Watch for them this summer as they continue to add dates for video game festivals and live performances.
POWERGLOVE is composed of four battle-hardened rockers out of Boston, MA: Alex Berkson, Bassil Silver, Chris Marchiel, and Nick Avila. This band shreds metal renditions of everything from old school 8- bit video game classics to contemporary blockbusters, all with a heavy metal attitude – and there’s nothing you can do to stop them!

FIREWIND’s guitarist and songwriter Gus G., currently on tour with Ozzy Osbourne in Europe, checks in with the following comment about the album and its artwork: “I’m very excited and cannot wait for our fans to listen to our new album! We feel we’ve captured great performances and took our songwriting to the next level on this one. There’s tons of cool guitar on there and I believe Bob has finally managed to reach warp-speed with his keyboard solos! Even more seriously, I highly recommend that you listen to this album at a very loud volume. “As for the artwork, it was once again done by our visual wizard and webmaster extraordinaire, Gustavo Sazes. This time we asked Gustavo to come up with a great landscape scenery, with a more traditional approach and even get the “pencil” style of artwork on there, but also combine it with more modern stuff. So, he gave us that…with a slight futuristic, sci-fi element and I think the end result is stunning!”

Gus G. further states: “Usually when we write an album we let the music come to us and go with the flow. Maybe that’s why our albums have variety and you can hear everything from super heavy songs, to speed metal shredding, to rock anthems and ballads. Days of Defiance wasn’t much different in the making, but this time we recorded almost all of it in our home studios, which allowed us to be more relaxed. That’s why I feel the new album features the best performances by all of us. One of our main goals though was to get a bit more of an ‘unpolished’ sound and be more raw. I think we achieved it and that gives an extra heaviness to the overall sound. We mixed the album in Helsinki, Finland at Sonic Pump Studios. Nino Laurenne (Thunderstone) and Tapio Pennanen mixed it and they did a killer job. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.”
Llexi Leon, creator of the multi-media concept Eternal Descent, conducted an interview with FIREWIND/OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Gus G. shortly before Ozzy Osbourne’s July 3, 2010 performance at the iTunes festival at London, England’s Roundhouse. Watch the chat below.
Gus G. is featured in the third issue of the gothic comic book series Eternal Descent, slated for publication later this month. The issue features a storyline inspired by guitar hero Gus G. who helps ETERNAL DESCENT characters Lyr and Sirian race against time to save Apollo and the rest of the band from the dissonant call of the Damned.

The launch issue came out on March 31, 2010, with subsequent issues to be released every 4-6 weeks.
Eternal Descent spotlights GOD FORBID guitarist Doc Coyle in issue 2, and Gus G. of FIREWIND and OZZY OSBOURNE in issue 3. Other bands — including STATIC-X, ATREYU, CHILDREN OF BODOM, and SOULFLY — are slated for cameo appearances in upcoming issues.
“Llexi Leon really caught my attention when I met him at NAMM, and he described his vision of combining actual rock dudes in his comic book series and doing an issue with each one,” explains Gus G. “I immediately asked him if we can be in one of his books and that’s how the whole thing started. It’s incredible! I feel Llexi has done a great job in capturing all of the band members’ characters.”

Sweden’s SPIRITUAL BEGGARS – featuring guitarist Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY, CARCASS) and bassist Sharlee D’Angelo (Arch Enemy, WITCHERY) – started working with Apollo Papathanasio (FIREWIND) as a new singer after parting ways with JB (GRAND MAGUS) and finished the recordings of their 7th studio-album at Sweetspot Studio with producer Rickard Bengtsson, who already produced the On Fire (2002) and Demons (2005) albums, and is also known for his work with Arch Enemy, OPETH, etc.
“The new Spiritual Beggars album is to my ears some of best stuff I’ve ever done with this band and I’m very much looking forward to releasing the seventh Spiritual Beggars studio album, Return To Zero, with the help and expertise of the InsideOut team! At the end of the day it was a no-brainer to do a new licensing deal with the InsideOut label, they did a great job on the Demons album and the Live Fire! DVD (2006). Since then, they have merged with the Century Media company whom I have a long and successful history with. I already know a lot of the people that will be involved in this release, and that feels good.” says founding member Michael Amott. “I respect InsideOut label boss Thomas Waber for being a true music fan and for his undying enthusiasm and efforts in making this deal happen.”
Also Thomas Waber (IOM) is really happy about re-signing a deal with Spiritual Beggars and welcomes the band again to the InsideOut roster. “We had a great experience with the Demons album and are looking forward to working the new one as well. After all the turmoil last year, things are back on top and better than ever and Spiritual Beggars will no doubt benefit from this!”
The new album, Return To Zero, will be released on August 30th in Europe. In an interview with the Japanese Burrn! Magazine Michael Amott talks about the new singer Apollo and the new album and gives a short impression of how the album sounds like “Apollo’s influences are very much rooted in the classic rock and metal of the 70s and 80s. He is the same age as the rest of us in Spiritual Beggars so we instantly shared a lot of common ground musically, and he really connected with the songs and delivered emotional vocals that really impressed us all. I was always aware of the fact that he is great singer. However, even I was surprised how well his voice fit Spiritual Beggars, in the new and the old songs. Apollo is showing a range and depth on this album that I believe will both surprise and please the Spiritual Beggars fans! The new album has a lot of the typical Spiritual Beggars trademarks, it’s heavy rock with a 70s atmosphere – but I also hear a definite progression and a deeper sense of melody in the songwriting and performances. It’s exactly the kind of record I wanted to make with Spiritual Beggars in 2010!”
On the Spiritual Beggars official MySpace page, the band uploaded a short audio sample of the new album as a pre-listening.
Spiritual Beggars lineup:
Michael Amott (Arch Enemy, Carcass) – Guitars
Ludwig Witt (Firebird) – Drums
Per Wiberg (Opeth) – Keyboards
Sharlee D’Angelo (Arch Enemy, Witchery) – Bass
Apollo Papathanasio (Firewind) – Vocals
On the day of Firewind’s Chicago show of the TYRANNY AND BLOODSHRED tour 2008 I got to speak with guitar whiz Gus G. He was running a bit late, but such is the case with a travelling band dealing with tight time schedules, setups, sound checks, and interviews. I spoke with Gus about touring in North America, guitar playing, song writing, etc.
