The Finnish Metal Tour Returns to the USA in 2010

August 17th, 2010

Following a successful first run in 2010, The Finnish Metal Tour will once again unleash itself on North America in early 2011. Dubbed “The Finnish Metal Tour 2”, and presented by title sponsor Decibel Magazine, the tour will feature co-headliners Finntroll (Century Media) and Ensiferum (Spinefarm). Additional support will come from Barren Earth (Peaceville), and Rotten Sound (Relapse). The tour will start on January 31st 2011 in Orlando FL, and conclude on March 4th in Raleigh NC.

FINNTROLL have returned with their highly anticipated new slab of folk-rooted metal hymns entitled Nifelvind that is now available everywhere. It was recorded at Sonic Pump Studios (Apocalyptica, Amorphis, Ensiferum) in Helsinki, Finland and mastered by Mika Jussila (Children Of Bodom, Sonata Arctica, HIM) at Finnvox Studios. The album cover artwork was done again by the band’s own guitarist Skrymer and visually captures the true FINNTROLL spirit perfectly. The band toured throughout North America this past April with Moonsorrow and Swallow the Sun. Head over now to in order to stream new tracks and view their tour itinerary.

Finnish folk metallers ENSIFERUM released their 4th album “From Afar” on September 8, 2009 via Spinefarm Records. The CD was produced by Tero Kinnunen (Nightwish, Amorphis) and Janne Joutsenniemi, who produced the band’s previous offering, Victory Songs and mixed by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Amorphis). Ensiferum completed their first headline tour of the USA this past November with Blackguard and Swashbuckle. Visit the band’s MySpace page: to check out tracks, and view the latest tour dates and news as it becomes available.

Ensiferum bassist Sami Hinkka had this to say about the upcoming tour: “Greetings from the north our brothers and sisters of the new continent! The time has come to unite forces with our fellow countrymen and raid your cities with unforeseen power. The amount of alcohol consumption on this tour is going to be horrifying, so don’t forget to bring your drinking horn! Grab your swords and hold them high with pride and join the ultimate metal event of 2011. Folk on!”

Tickets for the tour will be available starting August 17th, 2010 via an exclusive internet presale on VIP tickets will also be available and include a pre-show meet & greet with Finntroll and Ensiferum. All shows will then go on sale through normal ticketing systems on September 7th, 2010.

Mathias “Vreth” LillmÃ¥ns, vocalist for the Finnish folk metal band FINNTROLL

Mathias "Vreth" Lillmåns, vocalist for the Finnish folk metal band Finntroll

Interview and live pics by Kyle Moore, The Metal Magnus

I had the opportunity to interview Vreth, vocalist of the acclaimed Finnish folk metal band FINNTROLL, before the show started.  Because there was a large crowd of people backstage, we had to conduct the interview on the staircase leading up to the stage, and after a time the interview was cut short by the opening band starting their set. Nonetheless, Vreth was a pleasure to speak with!

Finntroll / Moonsorrow

Having spent the previous evening being enchanted and thoroughly worn out by none other than Opeth, I wondered if I would have enough energy for Finntroll, who ranks very high amongst my all-time favorite bands. There’s something about the marvelously bizarre Trollish shtick and polka melodies of these Finnish madmen that I find unreasonably captivating. I’ve been hooked since their second album of bouncy priest-devouring tunes, JAKTENS TID, and their newest effort NIFELVIND overwhelmed me with their most creative, heaviest music to date. But before Finntroll could take the stage, three bands I was unfamiliar with had sets to perform.

Intro and interview by Luxi Lahtinen

“Lovecraftian Death Metal…” – sounds like a fascinating title, doesn?t it? The German foursome, Alex, Mike, Christoph and Tobias call Philosopher a ?Lovecraftian Death Metal? band due to band?s strong interest in H.P. Lovecraft?s creations as far as the band?s lyrical approach is concerned. Musically, the Philosopher camp has a certain attraction to old school ?90s Death Metal in which people can associate them with bands like Death, Morgoth or even Morbid Angel. Plain copycatting has, however, luckily been avoided in Philosopher?s heavy and slowly creeping Death Metal approach and the band has already proved to stand out in its own, especially on the band?s debut album THOUGHTS which really shows what this talented German bunch is all about.

I talked to Alex ?Snakes?, the band?s guitarist, just recently and tried to gather together sort of an info kit what Philosopher is really all about as far as the band?s musical journey through the current Death Metal territory goes; basically finding out how they have been received by extreme Metal diggers and wanting to know a bit more what kinds of thoughts Alex has about Philosopher?s position amongst a countless amount of extreme Metal bands these days.

Uh, enough said for an introduction, now let?s get to the point finally?
