SLAYER – Interview with Drummer Dave Lombardo

Interview by Arto Lehtinen and Marko Syrjala

Slayer-promo-photo.jpg

Slayer has been in the frontlines of thrash metal and extreme metal for nearly four decades. Several classic songs such as Hell Awaits, Raining Blood, South Of Heaven, Dead Skin Mask, Cult etc are immortal and present a well oiled metallic war machine pushing forward relentlessly and show the brutality of thrash metal. However, the thrash metal machine needs a powerful inexhaustible source of intense drumming to create the well-known Slayer tempo. Dave Lombardo is definitely at the core of the unique sounds of Slayer. Despise his absence from Slayer, his role in the world of Slayer has become, and still is, an important part of Slayer. Metal-Rules.com had the great pleasure to have a moment with Dave Lombardo.

SLAYER AND ROB ZOMBIE TO BRING HELL ON EARTH TO NORTH AMERICA; The Two Metal Icons Will Together for the First Time in More than a Decade

March 28th, 2011
Slayer - North American Tour With Rob Zombie and Exodus

Slayer - North American Tour With Rob Zombie and Exodus

LOS ANGELES, CA – MONDAY, March 28, 2011 — Get ready for hell on earth, because for the first time since they tour together on Ozzfest 1999, Rob Zombie and Slayer are teaming up to hit the road, bringing a glorious purgatory to fans in 12 North American cities. The co-headline trek kicks off Wednesday, July 20 at the Sovereign Center in Reading, PA.  Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 1 at 10:00AM local time.  Tickets for all shows are available at the venues’ box office, and via the online outlets as listed below.

“We haven’t toured with Zombie since Ozzfest 1999, so you can expect no less than ‘hell on earth,'” said Slayer’s Kerry King.  “Total sonic annihilation and a visual bludgeoning.  Bring your own body bag…”

“Total destruction on stage and off is what this combination promises,” states Zombie, “Seriously, how much more Hell could you ask for? The answer is none more Hell.”

Both Zombie and Slayer will present their full headline sets at every show, and both bands will close shows over the course of the tour.  San Francisco’s thrash-metal band Exodus has been confirmed to open all shows.

Slayer has been performing its classic 1990 Seasons In the Abyss album in its entirety over the past several months, but will instead draw from its entire 30-year catalogue for this tour’s setlist.

Never one to play it safe, Zombie will be bringing his legendary stage show out in full force. Audiences can expect an exploding non-stop barrage of sin, sex and Satan guaranteed to rip your face off. This a true rock and roll spectacle at its finest.

Rob Zombie: With more than 15 million albums sold, seven Grammy nominations, the helming of five major motion pictures (including the #1 record-breaking “Halloween”) and dozens of music videos under his belt, Zombie is truly a force to be reckoned with in today’s entertainment landscape.  For over 25 years his unique meld of horror and hard rock has influenced his sound as a musician, and more recently, his vision as a director and writer.  After the tour, Zombie will be starting production on his sixth feature film, “The Lords of Salem,” with the producers of the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Slayer: The Chicago Tribune‘s Greg Kot wrote that the  four-time-nominated, two-time Grammy winning Slayer is “one of the great American rock bands of the last 30 years, forget about genre.”  Indeed, few bands come close to matching the intensity that Slayer brings to its live shows, having been named “Best Live Band” by numerous media outlets including RevolverSPIN, and Metal Hammer.  With songs that mirror the turmoil and aberrations of our society – God’s terrifying global genocide, the chaos of our broken political system, chemical warfare, the hideous minds of serial killers, and the way-too-close proximity of world horrors that technology has brought us, Slayer remains crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the Mainstream.

Dates for the Slayer and Rob Zombie tour are as follows:

Book of Historic Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus; Bay Area Metal Photographs to Appear This Fall

March 4th, 2011
Book of Historic Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus Photos Coming This Fall

Book of Historic Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus Photos Coming This Fall 2011

Legendary San Francisco Bay Area metal photographers Brian Lew (Whiplash fanzine) and Harald “O.” Oimoen (D.R.I.) have joined forces to create the large-format hardcover photo collection MURDER IN THE FRONT ROW: Bay Area Bangers and the Birth of Thrash Metal. Coming this fall from Bazillion Points Books, this intense look at early hardcore headbangers features some of the first photos of the “Big Four” and their extended family of thrash metal bands. With hundreds of candid, live, and studio shots, Lew and Oimoen celebrate the unique wild-eyed spirit and atmosphere of the historic S.F. Bay Area heavy metal scene: pinpointing clubs (The Old Waldorf, The Stone, Ruthie’s Inn, The Omni); hangouts (The Record Vault, the infamous Metallica Mansion); and beloved local figures like fearless stage diver Toby Rage, manager Debbie Abono, and the unrivaled metal ringmaster Paul Baloff of Exodus.

Among the jaw-dropping moments in heavy metal history on display: Cliff Burton’s first rehearsal with Dave Mustaine-era Metallica; Kerry King of Slayer performing with early Megadeth; Metallica and Slayer’s first Bay Area shows; the first meeting of Slayer and Metallica; original uncropped prints of Possessed’s blood-spattered “Seven Churches” band photo shoot; some of the earliest photos of Vio-lence and Death Angel; Testament (then called Legacy) dressed in religious stage outfits; the crazed front row faces from legendary Ruthie’s Inn; and Metallica’s triumphant takeover of Day on the Green in 1985.

At roughly 300 pages, filled with unpublished images and rare flyers, this incredible visual time capsule stems from a friendship that started when Brian Lew and Harald O. first met as camera-wielding teenage metalheads. Both later contributed to Ron Quintana’s infamous Metal Mania fanzine.

Says Harald O.: “I am so psyched on getting these photos out there. The camaraderie and great friendships forged between all the bands and the fans was so cool-there literally wasn’t much distinction. Everybody was pals with everyone else, and it was a magical time to be a metalhead living in the Bay Area. People are gonna freak on what what we’re gonna show them. This is a dream come true!”

Says Brian Lew: “This will not be a history book, but rather a time machine back to the ‘bonded by blood’ days of the original Bay Area metal scene. Before they played the Bay Area, Slayer wore makeup onstage; after that first Bay Area show they never wore makeup again. This book will show people why.”

Murder in the Front Row: Bay Area Bangers and the Birth of Thrash Metal, by Brian Lew and Harald “O.” Oimoen. [ISBN 978-1-935950-03-5] Coming Fall 2011 from Bazillion Points Books, America’s smallest but heaviest book publisher.

GARY HOLT OF EXODUS COMMENTS ON UPCOMING GUEST GUITARIST SLOT WITH SLAYER

February 16th, 2011
EXODUS - GARY HOLT Live Photo by DirtJunior

EXODUS - GARY HOLT Live Photo by DirtJunior

As announced by SLAYER yesterday, Gary Holt of EXODUS will be temporarily filling in for guitarist Jeff Hanneman during SLAYER’s upcoming tour dates.  He will immediately join Slayer members Kerry King, Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo on their five-date Australian Soundwave Festival that begins February 26.

Gary Holt offers the following comments about his upcoming stint as touring guitarist for one of metal’s most venerated bands:

“How can I put into words how excited I am to have been asked to play with SLAYER?  Hard to describe for sure.  Legendary band, check.  Old friends since the birth of thrash metal. Check.  Get to play ‘Angel Of Death’ live, priceless!  I’ll do my best to live up to the standard they’ve set for so many years, while we all wish Jeff a speedy return to health and his rightful place in SLAYER.”

SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman is currently recuperating at home after emergency surgery on his right arm after contracting a serious infection, possibly caused by a spider bite.  He is expected to make a full recovery and will return to the SLAYER line-up as soon as he has fully recovered.

SLAYER Recruits EXODUS Guitarist GARY HOLT For Upcoming Tour

February 16th, 2011
EXODUS' Gary Holt to Appear at NAMM

EXODUS' Gary Holt

SLAYER has recruited Gary Holt from veteran San Francisco Bay Area thrashers EXODUS to be SLAYER’s guest guitarist, temporary filling in for Jeff Hanneman who is currently recovering from surgery. Holt will immediately join Tom Araya (bass, vocals), Kerry King (guitar) and Dave Lombardo (drums) for their five-date Australian Soundwave Festival tour that begins February 26.

Hanneman underwent emergency surgery on his right arm late last month after contracting a serious infection, possibly caused by a spider bite. He is now recuperating at home and is expected to make a full recovery. He will return to the SLAYER lineup as soon as he has fully recovered.

While Hanneman’s doctors were not able to definitively identify the infection’s origin, they diagnosed necrotizing fasciitis, an infection caused by bacteria. According to WebMD, necrotizing fasciitis can destroy skin, fat, and the tissue covering the muscles. The disease sometimes is called “flesh-eating” bacteria.

“Jeff is our brother, we’ve all been friends and together as a band for almost 30 years,” said Araya, “so we just want him to completely recover as soon as possible.”

“After everything that happened last year,” King added, “we all agreed that we just can’t let our fans down again,” referring to Araya’s severe back and neck pain that prompted his January 2010 surgery, unfortunately leading to the band’s postponement or cancellation of numerous shows in 2009 and 2010. “Jeff is totally on board with this decision, so we will tour as planned. At this point, we can’t pinpoint exactly what day he’ll be back, but he’ll be back as soon as he possibly can. And we can’t wait for Jeff to get better and get his ass back on the road.”

EXODUS TO OPEN FOR IRON MAIDEN IN CHILE

January 3rd, 2011

California Bay Area thrashers EXODUS are very happy to announce they will open for the legendary IRON MAIDEN on April 10th, 2011 at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile.

Guitarist Gary Holt shares the exciting news:

“We had two shows left on the ‘Thrash Fest Tour,’ everybody was tired and burned out, and then I got word that EXODUS will open for the one-and-only IRON MAIDEN in Chile!  Best news ever!  Just unbelievable! There’s no one bigger than IRON MAIDEN in South America. I’ve seen the DVD footage of their shows down in that part of the world, and to actually get to open for them ANYWHERE is amazing!  But down there?  Absolutely spectacular!  We’ll be playing Santiago with my heroes – a band whose songs we were covering at backyard parties – in front of 65,000 people!  Suddenly we all got a big second wind!  Stoked beyond belief is an understatement!”

Four months out, 22,000 tickets to this concert have already been sold.  José Luis Corral, the event’s producer, states:

“We added EXODUS to expose the audience to something more extreme and also to have another classic name fundamental in the history of hard rock [on the bill] and very important for a generation of Chilean metalheads. I think it’s the first time they’ve played together.”
EXODUS recently returned from the highly successful “Thrash Fest Tour” in Europe with KREATOR, DEATH ANGEL and SUICIDAL ANGELS.

EXODUS’ ninth studio album, Exhibit B: The Human Condition

Deemed one of metal’s most important heritage bands for the lasting – and ongoing – contributions they’ve made to the creation and sustenance of the thrash metal genre, Bay Area thrashers EXODUS teamed up once again with SchneppZone video director Jon Schnepp of Metalocalypse fame for a visually pummeling video… so pummeling, in fact, that you can hurt yourself!

***VIEWERS WHO ARE EPILEPTIC OR PRONE TO SEIZURES ARE ASKED NOT TO VIEW THIS VIDEO DUE TO ITS STROBING EFFECT.***

“Downfall” is now available for viewing on Nuclear Blast Europe’s YouTube channel, the EXODUS YouTube Channel, and the band’s MySpace page.  The track comes off the band’s  Billboard Top 200 charting album, Exhibit B: The Human Condition.  The video was shot on April 1st on the old set of the television sitcom Night Court and features animated sequences by Los Angeles-based traditional animator Jeremy Polgar.

About getting to work with EXODUS again, Schnepp stated: “I think their music is incredible and they always give me 100% at the video shoot.  Working with these legends of thrash metal again has been a blast!”

EXODUS’ ninth studio album, Exhibit B: The Human Condition, hit #1 on the CMJ Loud Rock radio chart and sold over 4,600 copies in the U.S. the week of its release according to Nielsen SoundScan.  Exhibit B debuted at #114 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, #43 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, #19 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, and #12 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart.  The album also debuted at #19 on the Neilsen SoundScan LOUD Chart in Canada.

Before EXODUS launch their headlining “March Of Brutality” tour of North America with Malevolent Creation, Holy Grail, and Bonded By Blood, they’ll make a special one-off appearance at the Ozzfest kick-off show in San Bernardino, California on Saturday, August 14th.

EXODUS – Guitarist Gary Holt

Finland is known for its several summer festivals – big or small, but every year some of them do surprise with some interesting band announcements that just cannot be shrugged off totally.

This year, one of the most interesting festivals appeared to be 3-day Myötätuulirock, which has annually been arranged in Vantaa, Finland for 14 years in a row – and is heavily based on some of the hottest Finnish rock/metal names of each ongoing year. The Bay Area veteran thrashers Exodus was announced to be the headliners of the first day of the festival, so that alone made the festival interesting enough to be checked out.

Exodus´ 9th full-length album, EXHIBIT B: THE HUMAN CONDITION was released through Nuclear Blast Records on May this year. There performance surprised many festival attenders by their immensely brutal and heavy load of thrash delivery as the last act on Friday evening. The band confidently churned out both new and old stuff from their well-oiled killing machine over the enthusiastic audience (“The Ballad of Leonard and Charles”, “Blacklist”, “Piranha”, “The Toxic Waltz”, etc.), and was also very well received by a fanatical crowd that seemed to go absolutely berserk in front of their masters, song after song.

Before Exodus went to punish their Finnish fans onstage at Myötätuulirock festival, Gary Holt had a moment to talk to Metal-Rules.com about his memories about the band´s 1st live appearance at Provinssirock festival in Finland in 2003, the ongoing tour, new album, but also reminiscing some blasts from the past.
