There is a slight chill setting in around The Garage as September’s autumnal cool begins to set in around London; becoming most apparent with the quantity of Nile fans queuing outside donning customary hoodies and jackets.
Little did we all know that the warmer choice of attire would soon prove problematic as the evening served up a scorching example in death metal.
Imagine a weekend of nothing but pure heavy fucking metal.
Imagine being surrounded by the friendliest 15,000 people who share the same passion for heavy metal music and lifestyle. Imagine a place where it is respectable to have beer for breakfast and drinking until you drop in an accomplishment. Imagine a festival where you can see over 100 heavy metal bands and pretty much none of them suck.
Ladies and gents, this ain’t no heavy metal fairytale!
This is Bloodstock Open Air – the greatest heavy metal music festival of our times. It’s a place where metal heads run free, headbang until their heads roll off, shout ‘SLAYEEER!’ and avoid shower for 4 days straight.
It just does not get any better than this.
Our Metal-Rules.com UK team were privileged to attend Bloodstock Open Air 2013 and see things for themselves…here’s a ‘little’ insight of what went down.

This a tour de force lineup - dont miss it! In the name of Jove, I vow to bring the ROMAN might back to life and promise a bombastic live attack – Roma Victrix.”
Vocalist Maurizio Iacono (KATAKLYSM, EX DEO) issued the below message in the wake of the news that Roadrunner Records was shutting down its European offices, and that their CEO Cees Wessels was stepping down:
“This is just the beginning Not buying albums is affecting the labels who in return invest in the bands, tour support, recording .. it’s destroying all newcomer bands and its making middle class musicians poor. You’re not hurting the labels by illegal downloading, you’re killing the bands.
Starting a band these days is a suicide mission. If music becomes a hobby for musicians, then no more tours, no more good music. Dark times ahead. Well, wait, we have holograms now, don’t need REAL people on stage… my bad …
It’s not true that bands don’t need labels. Ask a 16-year-old kid who just started a band what to do. The power of record labels to fly journalists, to market, to distribute is SUPER important. With time you get the knowledge to do a lot of things, but to run a business (yes running a band is business) + touring worldwide to please fans that want to see you is nearly impossible. You need labels. Even if they become more of a management thing in the future, you need them.
Right now, with record sales getting lower and people buying less and less product, labels are saying ‘Sure, we’ll buy your flights, we’ll promote the band, we’ll give you tour support to buy a van or rent, but give us your merch.’ After you do that you starve to death.
Again, it’s not about me. I’ve had a great 20 years; if it ends tomorrow I can keep my head help up high for what I’ve done, but what about the new comers and the future of music? NOT good. It’s not you the fans’ fault, don’t get me wrong. It’s the system that let it happen. Governments, etc. could have stopped it. They didn’t. Now it’s up to us, the fans, to help out.
Buy a shirt, CD, vinyls, download on iTunes, Amazon, the songs you like .. DO SOMETHING! I love you all, and always remember, you guys have all the power to build or destroy, we are only messengers of your voice.”
The Roman legion of Ex Deo has not been quiet by any means… The centurions have been busy putting together the follow-up to the highly acclaimed debut album “Romulus”. The second opus entitled “Caligula” is set to feature the most intense “epic metal soundtrack” to come out in recent history. According to mainman Maurizio Iacono: “The album will once again have the honor of some elite guest appearances. The band promises an album that will shake the metal scene!” Artwork and layout for “Caligula” will be handled by classic artist Seth (Septic Flesh). Some song titles include “I, Caligula”, “Burned to Serve the Nocturnal Light”, In War & Conquest/Roma Caput Mundi” and “Teutoburg (The Ambush of Varus) – Part 1″. The modern day legion is set to enter JFD studios in Dallas, TX and Montreal, Canada with producer Jean-François Dagenais (Kataklysm, Malevolent Creation, Misery Index, Despised Icon) this Fall.
EX DEO, the ancient Roman-themed arsenal led by KATAKLYSM front man Maurizio Iacono, checks in from the current stop on the “Those Whom The Gods Detest Tour II” in Tucson, Arizona with label mates NILE, Tazmanian tech-death masters PSYCROPTIC, and Norwegian extreme metallers KEEP OF KALESSIN.
Vocalist Iacono offers the following update:
“It’s amazing to see a vision I had one day waking up finally become a reality two years ago. We had done a few shows in America with Ensiferum for our debut album Romulus that were fantastic, but to go across the country and really seeing people waiting anxiously for this and screaming their hearts out for it live has been one incredible feeling. I feel EX DEO is changing the game of the underground, bringing a theater to the live stage and bringing a new concept that has never done before. This is a beast of a band and we would like to thank everyone for the great support. With this said, I would like to announce that we will indeed begin pre-production on the next album Caligula - the follow up to the highly-acclaimed debut Romulus – as soon as the world tour for KATAKLYSM will end next year. Expect a revolutionary album that will breathe the word ‘NEW’ into a much stagnant metal industry. It is yet undermined which label will release Caligula as we are looking at many different options.”
View the video for “The Final War (Battle Of Actium)” here. The clip was released on March 15 (The Ides of March) in honor of the Roman god of war, Mars, who – according to myth – fathered Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.

EX DEO, the Ancient Roman themed arsenal lead by KATAKLYSM frontman Maurizio Iacono, will embark on their first ever U.S. tour starting October 31st! EX DEO will be direct support to NILE on the “Those Whom The Gods Detest Tour II”. Joining them will be Tazmanian tech-death masters PSYCROPTIC, Norwegian extreme metallers KEEP OF KALESSIN, and brutal death grinders PATHOLGY.
Mastermind/vocalist Maurizio Iacono commented:
“In just a couple of days, or in Roman terms in six sunrises, EX DEO will start our first full us tour in support of our debut album, Romulus. After talking with Karl of NILE and Arnt of KEEP OF KALESSIN there’s a lot of excitement in the air lately. It’s a special tour with great bands from all over the world, but I’m most excited about the joining of forces of EX DEO and NILE.
The meaning behind this is huge, not only musically but historically. I’ve been contacted by teachers and scholars about this tour from Cleveland to Los Angeles. Yes we have metal heads as teachers in our American schools who today connect with students in different ways than when I was a student myself. I wish I had been this privileged. Imagine my teacher coming to class and saying today you will see a video clip from a metal band called EX DEO in the times of Emperor Augustus! Not understanding this, is not accepting how far metal has spread its wings.
In just a few days, history will be in the making as NILE and EX DEO join forces and bring the ancient worlds to life in a metal soundtrack that the gods themselves would worship! Egypt’s philosophies were mind blowing and Roman law is the cradle of democracy and the birth of the very freedoms we enjoy today. Come and celebrate this once in lifetime event!
