OL DRAKE, lead guitarist for British thrashers EVILE, has been nominated for a Metal Hammer Golden God award in the “Dimebag Darrell Shredder” category.
According to Metal Hammer, the Dimebag Darrell Shredder award is given to those talented players who have been recognised as melting our faces off with their incredible technical prowess and ruthless talent. OL DRAKE is nominated alongside ADAM DUTKIEWICZ (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE), DEVIN TOWNSEND (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT), DINO CAZARES (FEAR FACTORY) and SATCHEL (STEEL PANTHER).
This isn’t the first time that OL DRAKE has been recognised for his contributions to metal, as EVILE won the prestigious “Metal As Fuck” award at the 2010 Metal Hammer Golden God awards.
OL DRAKE comments:
“I just woke up to find out I’ve been nominated for a Metal Hammer Golden God award named after one of my biggest guitar influences. I’m flabbergasted. I just used the word flabbergasted, that’s how honoured I am by this. I spent many years listening to and learning Dime’s mastery of the axe and still do to this day. We covered Pantera’s ‘Cemetery Gates’ for Metal Hammer back in 2009 which was also a huge honour. To conclude, if you can’t tell, I feel incredibly honoured. A vote for me in this would be amazing. Please get voting!”

EVILE’s new album, FIVE SERPENT’S TEETH, is out now on CD and limited edition coloured vinyl, and is also available from the Earache Webstore in a range of exclusive “Serpent Cult” fan packs.
EVILE are planning to play their heart-wrenching song, “In Memoriam”, live for the first time ever this weekend in memory of WOODS OF YPRES frontman DAVID GOLD, who tragically passed away on 22nd December.
EVILE will be performing at the HMV Ritz in Manchester, UK this Saturday, 11th February with CEREBRAL BORE and SAVAGE MESSIAH as part of HMV’s Next Big Thing, where WOODS OF YPRES were also originally scheduled to perform. EVILE have revealed that they will be performing “In Memoriam” – which is taken from the band’s new album, FIVE SERPENT’S TEETH – as a tribute to their fallen labelmate.
EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE has issued the following statement:
“We were all deeply saddened to hear the news of Woods of Ypres’ mastermind David Gold passing away. Their obvious cancellation of the Manchester show left a big hole in the lineup I was so looking forward to seeing and being a part of. We’ve been thinking of airing ‘In Memoriam’ live for a while, so we’d like to not only play the song for our own reasons, but to also play it at the upcoming Manchester show in memory of David.”
Tickets for the HMV Next Big Thing show in Manchester are still available and cost just £10, with no booking fee charged. Get your tickets now at http://www.hmvtickets.com/events/4945

Turnout has been great, the crew and staff at all the venues have been great, and we’re having a blast on the road! Dr. Living Dead and Portrait are tearing it up every night, and if you haven’t seen the show yet, check the remaining dates and we’ll see you soon for some metal madness! Long Live New Flesh!!!”

OL DRAKE – EVILE
“I’m sat in a bus in Germany about to go on stage, but a little part of me can’t wait to get back to the UK fans and play the HMV Ritz in February with Cerebral Bore and Savage Messiah. We’re all really looking forward to the show, and we can promise a very special set on the night. We HAVE to make it special as a part of celebrating Earache Records’ 25th Anniversary, of which it is an honour to be included in! Long live metal! See you in Manchester!”
DAVID SILVER – SAVAGE MESSIAH
“We’re really psyched up for this show! Manchester is a great metal city and we can’t wait to slam into some new tunes from Plague of Conscience for our metal brethren!! HMV is a British institution too, so we’re proud to have been invited to join in and help fly the flag for heavy music. We’re going to dedicate this performance to our fallen metal comrade David Gold of Woods of Ypres, who was supposed to be sharing the stage with us at this event; fate had other ideas, so we’re gonna raise the roof!”
SIMONE “SOM” PLUIJMERS – CEREBRAL BORE
“HMV Next Big Thing is gonna be a rare thing to play. We are absolutely honoured to support our label in this and that they’ve picked us out from all the Earache bands to play this festival with some of our label colleagues. Of course our thoughts go out to Woods of Ypres who have lost their great frontman at an unexpected time. They were also going to play this festival. We will rock our hearts out for them, this gig should be a literal blast!”

FIVE SERPENT’S TEETH is out now on CD and limited edition coloured vinyl, and is also available from the Earache Webstore in a range of exclusive “Serpent Cult” fan packs.

The gig will be at the HMV Ritz, and we’ll be playing alongside such great bands (and labelmates) as Cerebral Bore, Savage Messiah and Woods of Ypres. Leeds has always been seen as one of the most alternative places in the UK, but once a year; on the first Saturday of November, it’s metalled up to the max! And this year was no different!!
If you live in Leeds or the surrounding areas and you listen to the most brutal metal around and didn’t go to this festival, THEN…SHAME ON YOU!!
British thrashers EVILE are set to return to the UK’s Damnation Festival at Leeds University Union this weekend, following the end of a successful UK headlining tour.

EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE comments:
“The time has finally come for Evile to return to Damnation festival. I remember Damnation was one of the first (if not the first) gigs we did after signing to Earache. We had a great show and I wore a top hat. It’ll be great to return there after so long; I can guarantee a loud, fun-as-hell set! Come along!”

Here we are again… The mighty Jalometalli Open Air Metal festival strikes back once again with a killer line-up to maintain its metallic lofty status on the Finnish festival map. The festival is known for relying on an old school metal approach offering traditional metal to extreme metal. The festival offered a great deal of bands from the classic metal to the extreme black metal. The festival had also paid attention to young rising and local bands which had been placed to play at the small third sage. That was unique and thankfully most of the bands sounded killer. The Metal Rules team hit the ground of Oulu to testify several absolutely killer bands. The whole Jalometalli as a festival is so unique and one of kind that anyone reading this article should take a glance at the offering of the festival. Here is a brief article on the fest.

British thrashers EVILE are preparing for the release of their new album, FIVE SERPENT’S TEETH, and have dedicated one of the new songs to the UK’s Bloodstock festival.
Fans attending the festival next weekend will be among the first people to hear the brand new track, titled “Centurion”, as it will be played through the PA system between bands on the main stage throughout the festival.
EVILE frontman MATT DRAKE spoke to Bloodstock to explain the meaning behind the new track and why it was dedicated to the UK’s favourite all-metal festival.
“Bloodstock festival has always been good to our little band Evile and we can’t thank them enough for the chance they gave us way back in 2006 to headline the unsigned stage, which ultimately put us on course to being able to have a go at some of the things we’ve done. So when we had recorded the song called ‘Centurion’, it made us think about Bloodstock – there’s just something about that track that made us feel ‘Bloodstocky’. It might be the epicness, or the subject matter, or just the sheer ‘taking it seriously while not taking it seriously’ shamelessness of the song. Maybe all those things! But it made us think about Bloodstock all the same, so we would like to dedicate the song to Bloodstock festival as a thank you for being so good with our rock quartet over the years! Bloodstock is an amazing place; long may it continue!”
Bloodstock’s VICKY GREGORY has issued the following statement:
“Nothing gives us more excitement and pleasure to see the success of EVILE; the band stormed through our unsigned competition at Bloodstock and have never looked back! We expect great things from them and, having heard tracks from the new album, they won’t disappoint!”
FIVE SERPENT’S TEETH is due to be released on September 26th in Europe and on October 18th in North America.

Listen to a 15-minute preview of FIVE SERPENT’S TEETH, featuring one-and-a-half minutes of each song from the album:
OL DRAKE recently spoke about the album preview:
“I was delighted to hear iTunes upped their track preview length to 1:30, but everyone doesn’t have iTunes. A fan of ours, Austin H, put all the previews into one video on YouTube. I support people ‘trying before buying’ so I’d love to let people know these previews exist to give you an idea of the album instead of downloading the album in time to come – after all, when people download an album, they more often than not say it’s to ‘try the album out’, so I see this as quite a fair compromise to condone the previews being heard by everyone. I’m not wholly against downloading, I’m more against the disrespect shown to artists by downloading an artist’s work, liking it and not rightly paying for it. Bands these days, not just Evile, need their fans’ support. Support music!”

Metal-Rules interviewers had a chance to talk with Ol Drake of British trash metal band Evile. The band will release their third album on September 26, 2011 through Earache Records. Ol Drake talked about the new album, remembering ex-bassist Mike Alexander and also being a fan of Lady Gaga. Here are few excerpts from the interview:
Your up coming album “Five Serpent’s Teeth”, which will be available for purchase on September 26th, is your third full-length release. What makes this album stand out from the first two?
We’ve changed our approach to how we write the music on this one. I think we wanted to avoid skating around the point in songs and just get straight to it. Do we have a good riff? Yes; so let’s just play it. A few confusing time signatures; Just very direct and in your face. I feel we’ve matured a lot on this album and it is personally my favorite of the three because of it.
What’s with the Lady Gaga cover of “Born this Way”? It’s a bit strange, but I have to admit, It sounds way better than the original.
It’s just me fooling around. I’m a fan of her (shock! horror!) and what she does and how she does it; I just wanted to incorporate what I love doing into that. If our fans have a problem with it, so be it, but I was Born this Way and don’t really care if anyone thinks less of me for doing something I want to do. (see what I did there?)
Any last words for the fans?
No, Thank you for being interested! I’d just like to say support the bands you are genuinely into. I don’t mean just Evile. These days it is so difficult to be in a Metal band, so do everything you can to help them; Spread the word, pay for the music you like, go to their shows, buy a shirt if you can (the latter alone helps fill the petrol tank to get to the next show). Other than that, thank you for supporting Evile!
Evile’s previous album “Infected Nations” was released on September 21, 2009 through Earache Records and it was the last album that featured bassist Mike Alexander, who died on tour just weeks after the release.
