ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 8

September 28th, 2012
Enslaved - RIITIIR

Enslaved – RIITIIR

The following is the final installment of an 8-part series where bassist/vocalist/lyricist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter/lyricist Ivar Bjørnson of the Norwegian progressive extreme metal band ENSLAVED offer insight on the tracks comprising their twelfth studio album, RIITIIR, due out in Europe today and in North America on October 9th.

Kjellson on RIITIIR’s final track, “Forsaken”:

The final music Ivar wrote and the final lyrics I wrote actually ended up on the last song this time around.  It also ended up being our longest song in ages. This one though, could not be placed anywhere else, being perhaps the most diverse song on the album. It starts off almost punk-like (ouch!), but as long as it´s only punk-like, it’s okay. There are good punk acts, too, like the Ramones for instance… but that’s miles beside the point. It starts off with raw energy, moves into nearly Tangerine Dream-like soundscapes (me and Ivar share a love for ‘70s German electronica), moves further into a Pink Floyd-like bridge, explodes into a Hypocrisy-styled epic Death Metal theme before it all ends with something that Pete Steel could have written. So this song pretty much sums up, at least, some of the variety of inspiration we have gotten from our idols – hopefully by just taking inspiration, rather than stealing. Others will have to be the judge of that…heh, heh. On the lyrical side, these are some of those lyrics that have been lying in the back of my mind for ages, just waiting to be written down. I met the genius of Robert Lowe from OM (no, not the actor, nor the Candlemass vocalist) at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg (NL) this year, and we were introduced by our mutual friend Stephen ‘Nitwit’ O´Malley. We soon realized that we shared a lot of common thoughts on the ways of viewing the world, and I invited him to co-write a lyric together with me for the next album. Unfortunately our schedules fucked up a bit, so there just wasn’t time enough to do so. But the themes we largely discussed at the Roadburn Festival ended up in my lyrics for ‘Forsaken.’ Thanks a lot for the inspiration, Rob, and I hope we can fulfill the task sometime later. The lyrics landed on the outskirts of the concept overbuilding of RIITIIR, but it deals with the decadence that lays a dark shadow on all societies around the world, and it is thus something all of us unfortunately have in common…

Bjørnson on “Forsaken”:

“This song is a bit of a rarity, in the sense that it is a last-song-on-the-album that was written specifically for that purpose. The more usual route is to write material until something tells me we have an album (and then make up the order of songs), but this time this something was more specific: ‘You have an album, just write the finisher.’ Again, who am I to question these things? A thing that is striking is how crystallized the singers’ work are: both Grutle’s various vocal identities throughout the song and then Herbrand [Larsen]’s amazing performance on the outro. They’re both breaking new ground for themselves and the band here. Then I am going to pat myself on the back (on the behind would be weird!) for my little comeback on the piano on the intro and outro, as well as paying homage to the heroes of the synthesizers and sequencers of the ‘70s. It is all in all a fitting conclusion for the album, and creates some space at the end of a pretty dense album. Hopefully others will also have the same feeling after hearing it: wanting to hear the entire album again…”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 7

September 27th, 2012
Enslaved - RIITIIR

Enslaved – RIITIIR

The following is the seventh of eight installments where rhythm guitarist/songwriter/lyricist Ivar Bjørnson and bassist/vocalist/lyricist Grutle Kjellson of the Norwegian progressive extreme metal band ENSLAVED offer insight on the tracks to their twelfth studio album, RIITIIR, due out in Europe on September 28th and in North America on October 9th.

Bjørnson on RIITIIR Track #7, “Storm Of Memories”:

“Alright, much like ENSLAVED’s career, this song could be described with the sports term ‘a working victory’ (it might surprise some that we didn’t get where we are just because of our strikingly good looks and a talented costume designer). It was the first song to be written for this album but the last one to fall into place completely. Obviously, I’m talking about the first section of the song – the second half is more ‘normal ENSLAVED’ (okay, that is funny) and it more or less worked itself out during the rehearsal sessions. On the other hand, I wasn’t completely getting the right atmosphere from the first rounds of the band adding their instruments in the studio on the first part: the demos from the previous year still had more of a ‘vibe’ to them than we were getting in the studio. Luckily, co-producer Iver [Sandøy] had an equally wholehearted belief in the song and really dived into the task of getting the best out of the song. His ideas – for the arpeggio that Herbrand [Larsen, keyboard player & clean vocalist] wrote out on his keys, along with his ideas for percussion and some effects – became the spark that ignited the song in the end, which turned out to be one of the best we’ve done! The last pieces were the somewhat disturbing chanting by yours truly and of course Jens Bogren’s perfect mix. Obviously, he’s done a fantastic job on the entire album, but I feel the need to point out how integral he is particularly on this (working victory of a) song. Lyrically, we might be looking at some weird mix of a literal interpretation of the title and the inner/physical workings of the rituals and/or mental processes (depending on whether you’re wearing a wizard’s hat or a lab coat) intended to cause willed change on either or both sides of the ‘reality border.’ This is the song where abstracts and concretes meet in the hope of conjuring up a storm…”

Kjellson on “Storm Of Memories”:

“This song sounds like the title strongly indicates: a storm of memories! Intense like a storm from within. This was the first song Ivar wrote for the album, actually just a few months after the release of the Axioma album. The funny thing is that where the first song written for a new album tends to sound like the previous album, this one doesn’t! In fact, this one does not sound like either Axioma or Riitiir. This song is something like a deserted island in the ENSLAVED ocean (okay, that sounds cheesy). Anyway, this is (at least the opening) the closest we will ever get sounding like a Krautrock-band! Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it´s kind of special since none of us have been digging particularly deep in Amon Düül or early Kraftwerk. The direction of this song, particularly in the mixing session, is perhaps the biggest debate we’ve ever had on the production side in the band. We are a bunch of nerds that live and breathe for the art of making music and we shared the production between four different minds (Bjørnson, Kjellson, Larsen & Sandøy) with four different ways of approaching music. So, some arguments (very healthy in a retrospective aspect) occurred. But, all of us ended up thinking this was a very refreshing yet different song. This process opened up the eyes for all of us on the production team and this collaboration is something I will always remember and be deadly proud of.”

ENSLAVED: RIITIIR TRACK LISTING REVEALED

July 21st, 2012

Norwegian progressive extreme metal band ENSLAVED have unveiled the track listing to their twelfth studio album, RIITIIR, on their official Facebook page.

“It has been only two years since we last released an album [2010’s award-winning Axioma Ethica Odini], and we’ve been touring Europe and North America several times since then,” reflects ENSLAVED guitarist, songwriter, and founding member Ivar Bjørnson. “Some might think that this schedule, and the fact that we celebrated our 20th anniversary last year, should result in some time off in the end.  Nah.  Like a space vessel that gains momentum by entering slingshot-orbits on its way through space, we seem to gain speed, direction, and strength on our journeys, through new releases and subsequent tours.

“Describing the sound on the new album is both easy and hard,” Bjørnson continues. “It is easy because it sounds like ENSLAVED, whatever that means.  It is hard because there are so many layers and different focal points.  I have a feeling that it has a deeper complexity than our previous efforts, but at the same time, I do find it more catchy and moving.  Then again, I am the opposite of objective in this, so again I’ll leave it up to the people outside the band to make up their mind.”

The track listing for RIITIIR’s European and North American digi-pak is as follows:

01. Thoughts Like Hammers

02. Death In The Eyes Of Dawn

03. Veilburner

04. Roots Of The Mountain

05. Riitiir

06. Materal

07. Storm Of Memories

08. Forsaken

The track listing for RIITIIR’s 2 LP double-gatefold is as follows:

Side A:

01. Thoughts Like Hammers

02. Death In The Eyes Of Dawn

Side B:

01. Veilburner

02. Roots Of The Mountain

Side C:

01. Riitiir

02. Materal

Side D:

01. Storm Of Memories

02. Forsaken

RIITIIR is due out in Europe on September 28th and in North America on October 9th.

ENSLAVED will be performing in this year’s Barge To Hell cruise from Miami to the Caribbean, beginning on December 3rd.

ENSLAVED – New EP “THE SLEEPING GODS”

May 12th, 2011
ENSLAVED - New EP "THE SLEEPING GODS"

ENSLAVED - "THE SLEEPING GODS"

Norwegian progressive/psychedelic extreme metal trailblazers ENSLAVED are set to release The Sleeping Gods via Scion A/V as a free downloadable five song EP on May 10th. Following up on last year’s near-universally praised Axioma Ethica Odini, the EP finds the quintet once again expanding the boundaries of what metal can be, deftly incorporating influences from across the musical spectrum. Mainly recorded in Solslottet Studio in Bergen, and partly in the band’s own home studio, the effort finds the group sounding leaner and more confident than ever, part and parcel of maintaining a presence at the foreground of the international metal movement for 20 years.

Throughout its 30 minute playing time, the EP sways and punches in equal measure, in no small part due to the dexterous and powerful rhythm section of vocalist/bassist Grutle Kjellson and drummer Cato Bækkevold. Herbrand Larsen’s swirling keyboard textures form an ether around Ice Dale and Ivar Bjørnson’s guitars, which ooze tasteful sophistication and melodic sensibility in equal measure with their crushing, impenetrable force. This release is a must have for both Enslaved fans and fans of progressive music in general.

In its continual effort to show support for the arts, Scion covers all production, licensing and distribution costs for the A/V projects and all proceeds go directly back to the label and artists involved. “It’s exciting to be collaborating with ENSLAVED on this release. We feel the pairing is vital as we aim for the label’s approach to embody the same sense of forward thinking as the band’s music” says Jeri Yoshizu, Manager of Sales Promotions for Scion.

Guitarists Ivar Bjørnson and Ice Dale of the Norwegian progressive/psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED are featured on Page 23 of the February 2011 issue of Guitar World, on newsstands now.

“With [Axioma Ethica Odini], we wanted to get as close to our live sound as possible: urgent, upbeat and in your face,” says ENSLAVED founding guitarist and main songwriter Ivar Bjørnson to journalist Henry Yuan.  “This approach actually ended up leaving an open field for the more melodic and progressive parts, and, in a way, helped crystallize them.”

ENSLAVED ANNOUNCE VIDEO CONTEST WINNERS

October 26th, 2010

The members of Norway’s renowned progressive/psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED have announced the winners of their first-ever video contest.  Fans around the world were asked to create and submit a video for the track “Ethica Odini” from the band’s Billboard-charting new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which was released in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson comments on the competition: “First and foremost we wish to thank everybody who has taken part in this contest.  We have seen many exciting visual interpretations of our musical and conceptual universe; some of them stood out from the rest and we are really happy to announce the three winners of the competition.  Also, we would like to take the opportunity to apologize for the delay in announcing the results.  We have simply been outmaneuvered by touring and poor internet access on our touring trek throughout the last month. Thank you for your patience, and hope you will enjoy watching our new videos as much as we do!”

Vocalist/bassist/lyricist Grutle Kjellson adds: “Thanks a lot to all you great people that used your talent, passion and precious time on this contest!  You should know that we are very proud of you all, and that we really appreciate your efforts!  You are not afraid to bleed, not afraid to dream!”

The members of ENSLAVED have awarded First Place to Luka Bajt (LookaB) from Slovenia.  View the video here.

Clean vocalist/keyboard player Herbrand Larsen comments on the winning video: “[It] is original.  It’s not a typical metal video and originality is always appreciated.  It uses elements from the [album] cover, both shapes and colors… something that connects the video with the aesthetics used in the cover [art].  Speed and motion suits the riffs and the tempo in the song.  I’m very impressed, especially thinking of the pressure of time all the directors had to work under.”

Drummer Cato B. adds: “The winning video had a clear concept and a defined script, and [it] also carried along some elements from the album cover.  In addition, the video captured the mood of the song, plus was original and well-crafted.  Congrats, Luka!”

Lead guitarist Ice Dale further comments: “I liked the atmosphere in the video and the way it affected the song.  It reminded me of the Tool videos which are personal favorites of mine.  The use of colors from the cover artwork was also cool and gave it the right vibe.  The video stands out from the rest and deserves to be the video for ‘Ethica Odini’!  Well done and congratulations!!!”

Luka’s winning entry will be branded as an “official” video for “Ethica Odini” and featured the band’s official YouTube channel.  In addition, ENSLAVED will use the video in a live setting.  Luka Bajt will also receive:

  • ALL VERSIONS of Axioma Ethica Odini, including the limited edition wooden box, autographed by the band.
  • A special “thank you” video from ENSLAVED.
  • Two guest list spots + a Meet & Greet session with ENSLAVED at a live concert.
  • Band merchandise.

Second Place has been awarded to Gildo Iacovella (TheSpiral8) from Italy.  View the video here.

Gildo’s winning entry will be branded as an “official” video for “Ethica Odini” and featured the band’s official YouTube channel.  Gildo Iacovella will also receive:

  • A special “thank you” video from ENSLAVED.
  • Two guest list spots + a Meet & Greet session with ENSLAVED at a live concert.
  • Band merchandise.

Third Place has been awarded to Miller Arias (Hammerheart) from Colombia.  View the video here.

Miller’s winning entry will be branded as an “official” video for “Ethica Odini” and featured the band’s official YouTube channel.  Miller Arias will also receive:

  • A special “thank you” video from ENSLAVED.
  • Band merchandise.

ENSLAVED MEMBER COMMENTS ON BILLBOARD CHART ENTRY

October 12th, 2010

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Axioma Ethica Odini, the new album by Norway’s renowned progressive/psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED, has sold over 1,400 copies in the U.S. since its release on September 28th and has debuted at #16 on the Billboard Heatseekers (New Artists) chart, #40 in the Current Hard Music Albums chart, and #72 on the Independent Current Albums chart.

ENSLAVED guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson has checked in from the road in Europe with their reaction to the news:

“We received news last week of the great first week sales in the U.S. with accompanying chart positions.  Most important is the fact that we out-did our own previous achievements [with 2008’s Vertebrae] in the U.S. market.  We’re not competing with anything else than our own ambitions.  We want to express our sincere appreciation to the wonderful people at Nuclear Blast U.S. for their relentless efforts in promoting ENSLAVED, as this is also their achievement!”

Axioma Ethica Odini is the follow-up to 2008’s Vertebrae, which sold over 1,100 copies its first week of release in North America according to Nielsen SoundScan and debuted on the American Billboard Hard Music chart at #11 and on the Billboard Heatseekers chart at #49Vertebrae also won Terrorizer Magazine’s coveted “Album of the Year” award for 2008.  In their native Norway, Vertebrae entered the official charts at #20 and earned  ENSLAVED their third consecutive Spellemann award (the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy).

ENSLAVED will be direct support for fellow countrymen DIMMU BORGIR on a 32-date run across North America which launches on Friday, November 5th in Worcester, Massachusetts and ends Tuesday, December 14th in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.  Also on the bill are Blood Red Throne and Dawn Of Ashes.

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 9

September 27th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the final installment of their track-by-track series, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the final song that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America tomorrow (September 28th).

Grutle on “Lightening”:

“This the last song Ivar came up with, and also the last one I did the lyrics for on this album.  Another ‘love at first sight’ story for me; I enjoyed it straight away and had a really good time working on it.  I really have to mention [lead guitarist] Ice [Dale]’s huge impact on this song, too.  He really does some magic here and the beginning of the song had been remarkably different without his genius!  I remember that I wrote the lyrics while listening to the pre-production on repeat, and the words just came out instantly.  It was just like the words were already there and I was merely a medium… strange but cool.  I won’t say too much about the lyrics other than they describe certain forces inside you, written in mythological metaphors.  The title should provide a pretty good hint.  Enjoy!”

Ivar on “Lightening”:

“[Keyboard player and clean vocalist] Herbrand was a little bit concerned with the opening riffs on this song, as they seem to skip a lot between scales, bars, and time signatures.  Then he and Ice Dale sat down to work out a collaboration between the lead guitar and the clean vocals.  And WHAT a result!  I dare say this is Herbrand’s most impressing vocal efforts to date, and it shows that Ice Dale is a guitar legend in the sense that he can feel the notes, not only shred them.  Then Grutle takes over in the second part of the song, again showcasing very impressive timing and his best aggressive vocals so far in my ears.  These lyrics by Grutle definitely gives off a sense of lightening, of brightening up – but to me it is more the bright light of an explosion than any kind of meek light of forgiveness.  A perfect end to the album.”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 7

September 23rd, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the seventh of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “Singular”:

“This was definitely the song we spent the longest time working with.  It was hard to come up with ideas for arrangements, and we tried out a lot of different stuff.  In this process, however, we enjoyed the song more and more.  When we finally finished writing the arrangements, it was a real pleasure to record it!  A fantastic song, full of surprises and changes.  Without doubt, the most progressive song this time.  Gotta love it!”

Ivar on “Singular”:

“This is where the ‘last part’ of the album starts: For me, the first four songs represent the Extreme Metal tradition of ENSLAVED, while ‘Axioma’ and ‘Giants’ represents a transition into the last part where we are showing more of our influences from so-called progressive music and Classic Rock.  In ‘Singular,’ I would say that it is more the form than the actual tonality and chord progressions that are pointing towards these influences: The riffs are on the Extreme/ Black side with the occasional nod to classic Thrash Metal.  It is classic ENSLAVED in the sense that it is rule-breaking, somewhat chaotic at first listen, yet logical at the same time, building intensity towards a droning stretch towards the end.  Conceptually, the song deals with the concept of being Singular, the Power of One – not to be confused with ‘Goth-alone.’  For me, it could be dealing with the fruits of taking the pain and disasters as natural, valuable parts of the journey, and the pleasure of reaping what you’ve sown.”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 6

September 21st, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the sixth of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “Giants”:

“A wonderful doom/death piece that I also instantly liked.  This one was also among the easiest to arrange and the first one we recorded vocals for.  Perhaps the heaviest ENSLAVED song ever, and for the first time in many years, we even dug up our old [Roland] SH-1 [synthesizer] to add some psychedelic ‘70s-sounds!  A really cool song to play, a monster!  The lyrics deals with – as the title insinuates – the giants!  Meaning the chaos inside each and every one of us and in our surroundings.  The giants are the opposite of the æsir in Norse mythology, and symbolize the outer consciousness, female forces, and disorder.  Always in conflict with the masculine, inner conscious order of the æsir.”

Ivar on “Giants”:

“This is definitely the heavy song of the album. If the opening riff is influenced by Voïvod, Black Sabbath, or both – I am not sure… but I am extremely satisfied with how it turned out.  The main riff that follows is based on some kind of weird scale I came up with during a day on the tour bus in Portland last year. I don’t know one scale from the other, so I use associations to describe them.  When the riff was played at a low enough tempo, I saw giants marching through the fog taking no heed of any obstacles, chaotic and determined at the same time.  The ‘chorus’ (we don’t really have those, but common terms make it easier to discuss songs inside and outside of the band) keeps the marching feeling going and at the same time, musically depicts another side of the chaotic forces: One of beauty and freedom.  As for who should have done the lyrics, there was no doubt once the title was ready: Grutle is definitely the man to write about the Giant forces.  His lyrics fit the song perfectly!”
