ENSLAVED ANNOUNCE VIDEO CONTEST WINNERS

October 26th, 2010

The members of Norway’s renowned progressive/psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED have announced the winners of their first-ever video contest.  Fans around the world were asked to create and submit a video for the track “Ethica Odini” from the band’s Billboard-charting new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which was released in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson comments on the competition: “First and foremost we wish to thank everybody who has taken part in this contest.  We have seen many exciting visual interpretations of our musical and conceptual universe; some of them stood out from the rest and we are really happy to announce the three winners of the competition.  Also, we would like to take the opportunity to apologize for the delay in announcing the results.  We have simply been outmaneuvered by touring and poor internet access on our touring trek throughout the last month. Thank you for your patience, and hope you will enjoy watching our new videos as much as we do!”

Vocalist/bassist/lyricist Grutle Kjellson adds: “Thanks a lot to all you great people that used your talent, passion and precious time on this contest!  You should know that we are very proud of you all, and that we really appreciate your efforts!  You are not afraid to bleed, not afraid to dream!”

The members of ENSLAVED have awarded First Place to Luka Bajt (LookaB) from Slovenia.  View the video here.

Clean vocalist/keyboard player Herbrand Larsen comments on the winning video: “[It] is original.  It’s not a typical metal video and originality is always appreciated.  It uses elements from the [album] cover, both shapes and colors… something that connects the video with the aesthetics used in the cover [art].  Speed and motion suits the riffs and the tempo in the song.  I’m very impressed, especially thinking of the pressure of time all the directors had to work under.”

Drummer Cato B. adds: “The winning video had a clear concept and a defined script, and [it] also carried along some elements from the album cover.  In addition, the video captured the mood of the song, plus was original and well-crafted.  Congrats, Luka!”

Lead guitarist Ice Dale further comments: “I liked the atmosphere in the video and the way it affected the song.  It reminded me of the Tool videos which are personal favorites of mine.  The use of colors from the cover artwork was also cool and gave it the right vibe.  The video stands out from the rest and deserves to be the video for ‘Ethica Odini’!  Well done and congratulations!!!”

Luka’s winning entry will be branded as an “official” video for “Ethica Odini” and featured the band’s official YouTube channel.  In addition, ENSLAVED will use the video in a live setting.  Luka Bajt will also receive:

  • ALL VERSIONS of Axioma Ethica Odini, including the limited edition wooden box, autographed by the band.
  • A special “thank you” video from ENSLAVED.
  • Two guest list spots + a Meet & Greet session with ENSLAVED at a live concert.
  • Band merchandise.

Second Place has been awarded to Gildo Iacovella (TheSpiral8) from Italy.  View the video here.

Gildo’s winning entry will be branded as an “official” video for “Ethica Odini” and featured the band’s official YouTube channel.  Gildo Iacovella will also receive:

  • A special “thank you” video from ENSLAVED.
  • Two guest list spots + a Meet & Greet session with ENSLAVED at a live concert.
  • Band merchandise.

Third Place has been awarded to Miller Arias (Hammerheart) from Colombia.  View the video here.

Miller’s winning entry will be branded as an “official” video for “Ethica Odini” and featured the band’s official YouTube channel.  Miller Arias will also receive:

ENSLAVED MEMBER COMMENTS ON BILLBOARD CHART ENTRY

October 12th, 2010

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Axioma Ethica Odini, the new album by Norway’s renowned progressive/psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED, has sold over 1,400 copies in the U.S. since its release on September 28th and has debuted at #16 on the Billboard Heatseekers (New Artists) chart, #40 in the Current Hard Music Albums chart, and #72 on the Independent Current Albums chart.

ENSLAVED guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson has checked in from the road in Europe with their reaction to the news:

“We received news last week of the great first week sales in the U.S. with accompanying chart positions.  Most important is the fact that we out-did our own previous achievements [with 2008’s Vertebrae] in the U.S. market.  We’re not competing with anything else than our own ambitions.  We want to express our sincere appreciation to the wonderful people at Nuclear Blast U.S. for their relentless efforts in promoting ENSLAVED, as this is also their achievement!”

Axioma Ethica Odini is the follow-up to 2008’s Vertebrae, which sold over 1,100 copies its first week of release in North America according to Nielsen SoundScan and debuted on the American Billboard Hard Music chart at #11 and on the Billboard Heatseekers chart at #49Vertebrae also won Terrorizer Magazine’s coveted “Album of the Year” award for 2008.  In their native Norway, Vertebrae entered the official charts at #20 and earned  ENSLAVED their third consecutive Spellemann award (the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy).

ENSLAVED will be direct support for fellow countrymen DIMMU BORGIR on a 32-date run across North America which launches on Friday, November 5th in Worcester, Massachusetts and ends Tuesday, December 14th in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.  Also on the bill are Blood Red Throne and Dawn Of Ashes.

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 9

September 27th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the final installment of their track-by-track series, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the final song that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America tomorrow (September 28th).

Grutle on “Lightening”:

“This the last song Ivar came up with, and also the last one I did the lyrics for on this album.  Another ‘love at first sight’ story for me; I enjoyed it straight away and had a really good time working on it.  I really have to mention [lead guitarist] Ice [Dale]’s huge impact on this song, too.  He really does some magic here and the beginning of the song had been remarkably different without his genius!  I remember that I wrote the lyrics while listening to the pre-production on repeat, and the words just came out instantly.  It was just like the words were already there and I was merely a medium… strange but cool.  I won’t say too much about the lyrics other than they describe certain forces inside you, written in mythological metaphors.  The title should provide a pretty good hint.  Enjoy!”

Ivar on “Lightening”:

“[Keyboard player and clean vocalist] Herbrand was a little bit concerned with the opening riffs on this song, as they seem to skip a lot between scales, bars, and time signatures.  Then he and Ice Dale sat down to work out a collaboration between the lead guitar and the clean vocals.  And WHAT a result!  I dare say this is Herbrand’s most impressing vocal efforts to date, and it shows that Ice Dale is a guitar legend in the sense that he can feel the notes, not only shred them.  Then Grutle takes over in the second part of the song, again showcasing very impressive timing and his best aggressive vocals so far in my ears.  These lyrics by Grutle definitely gives off a sense of lightening, of brightening up – but to me it is more the bright light of an explosion than any kind of meek light of forgiveness.  A perfect end to the album.”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 7

September 23rd, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the seventh of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “Singular”:

“This was definitely the song we spent the longest time working with.  It was hard to come up with ideas for arrangements, and we tried out a lot of different stuff.  In this process, however, we enjoyed the song more and more.  When we finally finished writing the arrangements, it was a real pleasure to record it!  A fantastic song, full of surprises and changes.  Without doubt, the most progressive song this time.  Gotta love it!”

Ivar on “Singular”:

“This is where the ‘last part’ of the album starts: For me, the first four songs represent the Extreme Metal tradition of ENSLAVED, while ‘Axioma’ and ‘Giants’ represents a transition into the last part where we are showing more of our influences from so-called progressive music and Classic Rock.  In ‘Singular,’ I would say that it is more the form than the actual tonality and chord progressions that are pointing towards these influences: The riffs are on the Extreme/ Black side with the occasional nod to classic Thrash Metal.  It is classic ENSLAVED in the sense that it is rule-breaking, somewhat chaotic at first listen, yet logical at the same time, building intensity towards a droning stretch towards the end.  Conceptually, the song deals with the concept of being Singular, the Power of One – not to be confused with ‘Goth-alone.’  For me, it could be dealing with the fruits of taking the pain and disasters as natural, valuable parts of the journey, and the pleasure of reaping what you’ve sown.”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 6

September 21st, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the sixth of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “Giants”:

“A wonderful doom/death piece that I also instantly liked.  This one was also among the easiest to arrange and the first one we recorded vocals for.  Perhaps the heaviest ENSLAVED song ever, and for the first time in many years, we even dug up our old [Roland] SH-1 [synthesizer] to add some psychedelic ‘70s-sounds!  A really cool song to play, a monster!  The lyrics deals with – as the title insinuates – the giants!  Meaning the chaos inside each and every one of us and in our surroundings.  The giants are the opposite of the æsir in Norse mythology, and symbolize the outer consciousness, female forces, and disorder.  Always in conflict with the masculine, inner conscious order of the æsir.”

Ivar on “Giants”:

“This is definitely the heavy song of the album. If the opening riff is influenced by Voïvod, Black Sabbath, or both – I am not sure… but I am extremely satisfied with how it turned out.  The main riff that follows is based on some kind of weird scale I came up with during a day on the tour bus in Portland last year. I don’t know one scale from the other, so I use associations to describe them.  When the riff was played at a low enough tempo, I saw giants marching through the fog taking no heed of any obstacles, chaotic and determined at the same time.  The ‘chorus’ (we don’t really have those, but common terms make it easier to discuss songs inside and outside of the band) keeps the marching feeling going and at the same time, musically depicts another side of the chaotic forces: One of beauty and freedom.  As for who should have done the lyrics, there was no doubt once the title was ready: Grutle is definitely the man to write about the Giant forces.  His lyrics fit the song perfectly!”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 5

September 18th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the fifth of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “Axioma”:

“A little psychedelic island in the middle of the ocean of great riffs?  Heh, heh…  I like this little synth/vocal piece.  It works out as a nice break right in the middle of the record.  Me and Ivar wrote the lyrics together for this one and it deals in general with how one shall ignore everything but mere true sayings, i.e. axioms.”

Ivar on “Axioma”:

“It had simply been too many years since we’ve had any kind of ‘intermezzo,’ one of the classic ‘tricks’ of pompous early-‘90s Norwegian Metal.  Axioma Ethica Odini is a quite long album in terms of ENSLAVED’s music being intense and containing so much info in each song; it felt like a smart thing to split it in some way.  Also, I got the chance to pay tribute to my synth heroes from the ‘70s: Klaus Schultze, Tangerine Dream, and Brian Eno.  I used to handle the keys in ENSLAVED and I am still very much into that kind of keyboard usage: Eerie synths, mellotrons, organs, etc.  Sampled orchestras are not my cup of tea, heh heh.  The lyrics for the song are surreal and cold – as is the world for someone out to find truth at any cost.”

ENSLAVED COMMENT ON UPCOMING NORTH AMERICAN TOUR WITH DIMMU BORGIR

September 16th, 2010

Progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED will soon be returning to the western hemisphere as direct support for fellow countrymen DIMMU BORGIR.  The 32-date “Darkness Reborn World Tour” across the U.S. and Canada launches on Friday, November 5th in Worcester, Massachusetts and ends Tuesday, December 14th in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.  The tour includes Blood Red Throne and Dawn Of Ashes.  ENSLAVED’s new album, Axioma Ethica Odini, is scheduled for release in North America on September 28th.

Nuclear Blast caught up with rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson and bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson to ask a few questions about the upcoming trek:

There are THREE Norwegian bands on ONE North American bill. Why does this tour make SO MUCH SENSE?

IVAR BJØRNSON: “Norway has always offered a varied selection of extreme Metal bands – something this bill clearly showcases!  There seems to be a two-way affinity between Norwegian musicians and North American listeners, and we’re sure this tour will solidify this bond.  We’ve known DIMMU since the early days and are sure we’ll have a blast on the road with these guys!”

Will ENSLAVED be playing any new North American markets that you haven’t played in before?

GRUTLE KJELLSON: “We will be playing in some areas that we´ve never been before, and we are particularly looking forward to perform in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver in Canada. We´ve only been playing in Ontario and Quebec before, and we always meet some fans that travel a long way from other provinces in Canada when we are playing in Toronto and Montréal. It will be nice to travel around a little bit more in Canada, too + the metalheads there are really nuts!!  Heh, heh.  Also, we have never been to Las Vegas and I´m looking forward to see [lead guitarist] Ice [Dale] go apeshit with gambling.”

Given that you’ll be supporting your new album, Axioma Ethica Odini, what sort of process will the band undertake to come up with a set list?  Will it be democratic, totalitarian, via dictatorship, or a coupe?

IVAR BJØRNSON: “ENSLAVED has a unique form of internal government; we call it ‘Contributocracy.’ The more you know about something (example: playing drums, singing, writing lyrics), the more your vote counts in questions directly relating to your field of ‘expertise.’ This is also adjusted by the good old ‘effort’ measurement: If you take time off from your hobbies / social life and work hard with preparing a tour, you will have more to say in the decisions made for that tour. We have a few guys in the band that really know a lot about the live-format (particularly Ice Dale and Grutle) from their life-long interest in live albums, videos, and going to shows, so perhaps they have a little more leverage in our discussions; we know they know what they’re talking about. Then there’s the labor of planning and execution; that’s where my vote gets fattened up, heh heh.”

You’ll be touring during the holidays.  Any requests from family members or friends for U.S. or Canadian souvenirs?

GRUTLE KJELLSON: “Maybe I´ll buy my father a Canadian Police uniform? Or a Boston lobster hat? That would really be something, huh? Last year I got him an Elvis shirt from Graceland and he seemed to enjoy that one. Well, let´s hope they do not ask for full size statues of John Candy in bronze or a ‘Build Yourself A Washington Free Mason Temple Kit.”  I would rather prefer CDs, vinyl, books, etc.  Father, are you reading this?”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 4

September 16th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the fourth of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “The Beacon”:

“Seemingly a straight forward song by listening to the opening, but becomes a bit ‘progressive’ after a while.  A very energetic song with a crystal clear live song potency: It’s intense, brutal, desperate and yet also groovy at times.  The title was inspired by a movie I saw.  In old times, they would light beacons to summon their allies to aid.  The lyrics deal with watching out for certain signals within your own mind and body, and running to aid when the beacons are lit.”

Ivar on “The Beacon”:
“This one I had a killer feeling for right from the start of making it: It starts with a nod to classic Norwegian Metal before pairing the old school BM-feeling with Classic Rock before going into dark territories with the middle-section of the song.  Again, the singers really raise the bar with their efforts: Grutle’s harsh vocals have the perfect aggression and timing, while [keyboard player] Herbrand’s clean vocals take on a few unexpected turns in the chorus.  The gem is Herbrand’s organ in this song:  The organ-lead in the second verse takes me back to Deep Purple, while the way it is used in the middle-section has to be the blackest use of the [Hammond] B3 [organ] ever!”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 3

September 13th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the third of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “Waruun”:

“This was one of the songs that took the longest time to get into.  It also turned out to be the biggest surprise and among the songs I enjoy the most on this album.  This was among me and [keyboard player and clean vocalist] Herbrand’s biggest difficulties when figuring out what to sing over things, and one of the last we recorded.  It became quite experimental on all layers, but at the same time weirdly catchy!  The best of those two worlds, one might say!  A killer song, in my maybe not too humble, opinion.”

Ivar on “Waruun”:
“This is one of the first songs written for the album.  The way the songwriting process starts is that I go away somewhere with my mobile recording rig.  This time I didn’t go far, but far enough out of Bergen [Norway] to start forgetting some of the mundane distractions that can block creativity (rock-blocking?).  The title is a construction of mine, and people can put whatever they want into it; I know vocalists Grutle and Herbrand have made their own interpretations.   It is one of our heaviest song openers and shows how focused ENSLAVED’s musical energy can be, contrasting the more floating, ‘spacey’ parts that follow the opening.  This is one of the songs that really benefitted from our heavy focus on working out arrangements in the rehearsal room rather than in the pre-production studio. The dynamics vary a lot and ‘solving’ the song requires finding the transitions between these dynamics.  To be able to do that requires working in a ‘real’ environment, i.e. rehearsal room.  Studio work only reveals so much of the inner life of the song.”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 2

September 10th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the second of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Grutle on “Raidho”:

“A signature Ivar-song.  Full of cool riffs, both straight forward and a little bit weird, too!  A bit complex, still a very enjoyable song to arrange vocals on.  This was the first song me and Herbrand [Larsen, keyboard player and clean vocalist] did the vocal arrangements for on Axioma Ethica Odini and one of the first we recorded (I remember ‘Giants’ being the very first).  This song turned out to be one of the most brutal songs on the album, and probably the one containing the most harsh vocals.  Love this one, and am really looking forward to playing it live.”

Ivar on “Raidho”:

“’Raidho’ is a song where the song title and the song itself are very closely linked.  The title itself is the name of a rune that translated to travel, vehicle and so on.  My ambition was to make a song that would convey the feeling of travel; try to depict a ‘moving wheel’ through riffing.  It turned out that quite a lot of ENSLAVED’s music had this feeling.  If that is a coincidence or not sounds too much like quack-speculation, but I do come from a family of travelers, sailors, and even whalers (‘ey, don’t go Greenpeace on me now!).  Perhaps this ‘nomadic’ feeling is our connection to Motörhead… one of Metal’s hardest touring bands?  Anyways, when I separated the rhythmic guitar voice (there’s one ‘straight-ahead-guitar’ with the chords, and one ‘drone’ with a rhythmic pattern) and had the drums follow that, I discovered we had what I would almost call a Motörhead-part – which turned out to be the middle-section.  I am not a fan of ‘explaining’ lyrics as it limits the reader’s potential for exploration and self-reflection. This one, however, is quite easy to decipher on the surface at least – then again, there are so many ways to travel…”

ENSLAVED: TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY SERIES, PART 1

September 7th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

In the first of nine installments, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the songs that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America on September 28th.

Kjellson on “Ethica Odini”:

“When I first heard Ivar’s sketches for this song, the first thing that struck me was:  ‘Wow! Master’s Hammer!’  It does not necessarily sound like our old Czech heroes, but the nerve and the atmosphere reminded me of them for some reason straight away.  It has got only three riffs/themes really, and it is perhaps our most repetitive song in 15 years, but still I think there is something really strong and outstanding about it. I enjoyed it instantly and I still do after listening to it 1,018 times!  The title and lyrics of this song are actually something I have had in mind for several years, and they turned out to be very fitting and suitable for this album.  As the title strongly indicates, it deals with the ethics of Odin, at least the way I see them.  The first Latin translation of the Norse poem ‘Haavamaal’ (the tale of Odin in his hall, Haavahall) was actually called ‘Ethica Odini.’  The lyrics are inspired by some of the verses in this poem.  Feel free to find out which ones… heh, heh.”

Bjørnson on “Ethica Odini”:

“This is one of my favorite ENSLAVED album openers so far.  During the making of this album, I felt an urgent need to hear something that made me really react like the albums of the early ‘90s did, when we were a young band.  This really made me aware of how absolutely fearless these bands were – the pioneers of early Death, Black and Extreme Metal.  A band that was a particularly important for me and Grutle were Czech legends Master’s Hammer, and even though it might not be totally obvious, we have put a little nod to them in this song.   I really like the way the vocals contrast each other here;  this first song is really getting out of the speakers to let the listener know that ‘We’ve made some giant steps ahead here, let’s show you!’  Heh, heh.   The clean vocals in the end part is showcasing [keyboard player and clean vocalist] Herbrand’s exquisite nose for melody while the opening shows a snarly Grutle in top form. The structure of the song is quite ‘simple,’ even though the parts themselves hold a lot of complexity and depth. The idea for the intro came from Grutle – we knew it needed to be an intro for both the song and the album.  Not an easy task.  Grutle told me he wanted the intro to contain the sound of a ship creaking against a wooden pier.  I started working on the intro with all kinds of keys and sound on top the creaking ship, but ended up using basically a processed sample of the ship.  It simply fits the concept and the feeling of the album: If the ship is about to leave, arrive, or lie there forever, that is up to the listeners own fantasy.  To me, it is perfect to set up the mood for Axioma Ethica Odini.”

ENSLAVED ANNOUNCE FAN VIDEO CONTEST

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Norway’s renowned progressive/psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED have launched a worldwide fan video contest for the track “Ethica Odini” off their new album, Axioma Ethica Odini, due out in North America on September 28th.

States guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson:

“We wanted to do something else for the album video this time around. The track ‘Ethica Odini’ opens the album and stood out as the choice for making a video.  Earlier, we have done videos more or less by ourselves (“Isa”), semi-professionally (“Path To Vanir,” “Essence”), and all-the-way-glossy-pro (“The Watcher”).  Now we are really curious to see what our listeners can conjure up out there: an entire new angle and blank sheets is always a good thing in the ENSLAVED universe!  This is a way to interact directly with our listeners, which feels very right – as we seem to have the most involved listeners in the first place.  We can’t begin to express the appreciation for the support we have been shown through the run-up to this release!  May the best director win!”

ENSLAVED: NEW ALBUM ARTWORK REVEALED

July 20th, 2010
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini

The artwork by Norwegian artist Truls Espedal for Axioma Ethica Odini, the eleventh studio album by Norway’s highly renowned progressive, psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED, is now up on the band’s MySpace page.  The album will be released in Europe via Indie Recordings on September 27th and in North America on September 28th via Nuclear Blast Records.

ENSLAVED bassist & vocalist Grutle Kjellson has this to say about collaborating with the man who has painted every ENSLAVED album cover since 2001’s Monumension:

“On every new album cover, me and [rhythm guitarist/songwriter] Ivar [Bjørnson] come up with the idea of what the cover art shall include in terms of elements, symbolism and so forth.  After that, we contact Truls and tell him about our ideas for the cover art.  Then we arrange a meeting where we sit down for a couple of hours making sketches.  Truls also has the opportunity to come up with his own ideas of how we can transform our original ideas the best possible way.  He has made a masterpiece this time as well!  The cover art is simply amazing!  Amazing…”

Artist/painter Truls Espedal reveals how much black paint was used for the artwork’s creation and shares his thoughts on being back in action with ENSLAVED:

“I’m always excited about working with ENSLAVED, which is the reason I feel that too much time goes by between releases – ha, ha!  But once again I sat down with Ivar and Grutle, and their ideas were more complex and interesting than ever.  Also, their expectations and confidence that I’m able to come up with something better than before pushes me to set the bar even higher.  This time around, we set out to expand further what we have done on earlier works: adding more textures and mixing the figurative paintings  with the  ‘symbolic’ design even more.  By doing this, I feel that we are able to convey a lot more atmosphere, story, and a visually more interesting cover throughout.  Hopefully, other people will think the same.  It’s really important for me that the artwork is handcrafted and that the printed images on the CD and vinyl versions really show the brush strokes and have that feel to them.  That is a big issue!  And about the amount of black paint I used – a lot.  Good times.”

Produced by Bjørnson, Kjellson, and keyboardist/backing vocalist Herbrand Larsen, the groundwork for Axioma Ethica Odini was recorded at three different studios in Bergen, Norway: 1) Duper Studios; 2) Earshot Studios (belonging to ENSLAVED members Larsen and lead guitarist Ice Dale); and 3) Peersonal Sound (owned by Bjørnson).  The album was mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Bloodbath, Amon Amarth, Eluveitie) at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden and mastered by Chris Sansom (Mortiis) at Propeller Music Division in Oslo, Norway.
