On the tin it seems like an odd mix. Enslaved and Grand Magus hitting the road together for a co-headline tour may not have made the most obvious pairing, but while the two may differ in genre, they’re more than a match for each other when it comes to energy. Taking to the O2 Islington academy in London for the night its sure to be a killer performance.

Picture the scene: a field in south Derbyshire. One moment, quaint and calm; serene, leafy and undisturbed.

But then, as the sun arises to the midday point one cloudless Thursday in august, thousands upon thousands of heavy metal fans swarmed forth out of the woodwork that is England 2015, to attend the twelfth official Bloodstock Festival (11th open air to be exact).

Roadburn 2015 – Tilburg Holland

May 3rd, 2015

Roadburn 2015 – Tilburg Holland

Article and pictures by Arto Lehtinen

The prestigious Roadburn Festival is an extra pumped adventure into the sonic catacombs of the underground of stoner/doom metal from both known and truly unknown acts. The 2015 line-up  once again offered a wide range of metal/rock and other torturing sonic pleasures. As usual, there is always a curator picking bands to play at Roadburn. The two curators being Ivar Bjornson from Enslaved and Einar Selvik from Wardruna had been recruited to create the event for their own tastes under the moniker “House Of The Holistic”. Even though these Norwegians navigated the curator roles in the finest possible way, the fourth day has been named “Afterburner” being one kind of After Party type of day. Anathema had been booked to headline that day. Well, some people may cite it as a boring act and way to conclude the four-day event, but wait, the big surprise is on the way in the article. Approximately 2500 people had arrived to enjoy the art and the music at Roadburn in various forms.

ENSLAVED – Interview with Ivar Bjørnson

February 20th, 2015

LOGO-enslaved (585x183)

Interview with guitarist Ivar Bjørnson

By Peter Atkinson

Of the bands that emerged during the turbulent birth of Norwegian black metal in the early ‘90s, arguably none have been as productive, consistent or diverse as Haugesund-born/Bergen-based Enslaved. Rather than revel in the controversy or “true Norwegian black metal” purist sentiments of some of their brothers in arms, Enslaved have honed their craft since 1991 with a steady stream albums that grew ever-more experimental – especially after 1998’s furious Blodhemn – and continued to break new ground – for instance, touring in the North America for the first time in 1995, when Norwegian black metal still was mostly just a sinister curiosity here.

Over time, as Enslaved’s lineup solidified – its roster since 2004 has been founding guitar Ivar Bjørnson and bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson, guitarist Arve “Ice Dale” Isdal, keyboardist/vocalist Herbrand Larsen and drummer Cato Bekkevold – the band’s music metamorphosed into something far more progressive than mere black metal. More recently, the band seem to have found a happy medium between prog-rock atmosphere and breadth and extreme metal ferocity and power.

Along the way, they have become something of a national treasure in their home country, scoring a number of “album of the year” awards – including four Spellemannprisen, or Norwegian Grammys. Last year, along with Norse-folk act Wardruna, they were commissioned to compose a special musical work to mark the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution.

Enslaved’s 13th studio full-length, In Times, will be issued on March 10. It is perhaps the most listener friendly work the band have done, albeit still a challenging one, as it mixes inviting grooves and melodies with epic scale, dramatic about-faces, the omnipresent harsh counterpoint of Kjellson’s feral growl and occasional forays into traditional Norwegian folk music and the like. The band will launch the album with a North American tour kicking off March 5 in San Diego, with Yob and Ecstatic Vision in tow, that leads up to a residence at the four-day Roadburn Festival in Holland in early April featuring several unique performances.

After apologetically chiming in late for our originally scheduled interview time via Skype, Bjørnson rang back at the end of his slate to discuss Enslaved’s new album and tour, the Roadburn Festival for which he was invited to curate, the band’s long career and how they continue to challenge themselves after nearly a quarter-century of extreme metal radicalism.

Enslaved – RIITIIR

NORWEGIAN progressive extreme metal band ENSLAVED have just received word of their nomination for the 2012 Spellemann Award in the category “Best Metal Album” with their most recent release, RIITIIR.  This prestigious music award is the Norwegian equivalent to the American Grammy.  Ceremonies will take place at the Stavanger Concert Hall in Oslo on Saturday, March 23rd and will be broadcast live on NRK 1.

ENSLAVED – who just performed in Seattle, Washington last night and continue their trek through the U.S. and Canada – offer the following statement:

“By the hammer, saw, and grinder of Thor!  What an incredibly pleasant surprise to be getting on the road, being nominated for Spellemannsprisen (Norwegian Grammy)!  Having that many people interested & versed in music liking our album is simply overwhelming.  We’ll miss the party, but feel confident that others will take care of the scandalous behaviour.  Thank you jury, this means a lot to us no matter the outcome of the ‘final’!”

Enslaved - RIITIIR

Enslaved – RIITIIR

Now available in North America is RIITIIR, the twelfth studio album by Norway’s progressive extreme metallers ENSLAVED.

“I’ve poured my work, dedication and inspiration into this,” states rhythm guitarist/songwriter/lyricist Ivar Bjørnson.  “At one point, guitars were being written and recorded in my home studio while I was waiting for the phone call from the hospital that would admit my wife and I to the Labor Ward to receive our firstborn. I have a feeling that RIITIIR has more of everything: the beautiful is more beautiful while the harsher is harsher. That it ended up being the longest album we’ve made so far was something we discovered by accident when we made the first rough mixes after the recordings. We forgot to think about length during the making and rehearsing of the album before recording it! We sat down and thought about it: did it mean we hadn’t been critical enough with regards to the time? Upon listening through the recordings with the proverbial scissors in mind, we couldn’t find anything we absolutely didn’t want to keep. I’ll take that as a good sign. So good news if you don’t absolutely love what we’re doing: at least the songs are very long!”

RIITIIR’s total running time is 67 minutes and was recorded in Bergen, Norway at Duper Studios, Earshot Studios, Solslottet Studios, and Peersonal Sound.  It was mixed by Jens Bogren and mastered by Tony Lindgren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden.  The team of producers includes Ivar Bjørnson, Grutle Kjellson, Herbrand Larsen, and Iver Sandøy.  Artwork is once again by talented Norwegian artist Truls Espedal.

Visit the ENSLAVED Facebook page to read commentaries on all the new songs on RIITIIR.

Watch new album “Making-Of” videos on YouTube: Ivar Bjørnson, Grutle Kjellson, Ice Dale, Cato Bekkevold.

RIITIIR is available on iTunes at the special pre-order pricing of $8.99 for all U.S. residents (special pricing also extends through the week of release).  Visit iTunes to preview 90 seconds of every single thought-altering new song.

Nuclear Blast USA’s RIITIIR bundles include an exclusive album artwork t-shirt + an exclusive 1-inch pin.  RIITIIR’s deluxe digi-pak edition includes a bonus DVD featuring: The Making of RIITIIR, The Band, The Studios, The Artwork.

RIITIIR’s North American 2 LP bone & charcoal splatter vinyl double-gatefold version is limited to 1,000 copies and can be pre-ordered now.

Do it.  Join ENSLAVED on the Barge To Hell cruise and gift yourself the experience of a lifetime.
