w/ Sonata Arctica & Delain

I have not seen the 2500+ capacity MacEwan Hall sold out for a Metal show in a long, long time. Not even for bands that also pull in the more mainstream crowds like Blind Guardian and Gwar. But Nightwish did it! At their second concert in Calgary in over 20 years, the place was packed for an extra-ordinary bill of Euro-Metal. Delain and Sonata Arctica have also been through Calgary before and the crowds were out in force to see the triple stacked show. I’m not surprised Nightwish is riding a career high with a triumphant North American tour with their new signer as they just recently won the award for Best Metal album in their homeland of Finland.

Finnish melodic metal heroes SONATA ARCTICA have announced their highly-anticipated 26-date North American tour for 2016 with headliners NIGHTWISH! The trek launches in Sayreville, New Jersey on February 19th, hitting six Canadian cities plus Pittsburgh, Anaheim, and New Orleans, then closing out in Tampa, Florida on March 23rd. Opening for the tour will be Dutch symphonic metallers DELAIN.
SONATA ARCTICA keyboard player Henrik “Henkka” Klingenberg checks in with a special message for their North American fans:
“It’s again been far too long since our last American tour, so we’re really happy to announce that we’re coming back once again…and with NIGHTWISH nevertheless. As we’ll be working on our next studio album in the spring of 2016, be ready to hear some surprises during the tour. Even if we prepared to be in the studio for the whole spring, this was an opportunity that we couldn’t pass on and we’re all looking forward to see our North American fans once again and kick some ass. Until then, take care and a big cheers!!”

Thanks to Emil Westerdahl at Inner Wound Recordings for setting up the interview.
Thanks to Inner Wound Recordings for the promo pictures of the band.
From British Columbia Canada comes Leah, a singer that released her second album KINGS AND QUEENS early this year. Her music is best described as symphonic metal influenced by world, Celtic, and middle eastern music. A few of the topics we handled include: the new album, her new label, the guest musicians (Tim Somers, Sander Zoer and Barend Courbois), her background, and why she hasn’t toured. Leah has gained a big fanbase with huge internet support from fans and I’m sure that the fans wants to see her live. Leah’s label has also re-released her debut album OF EARTH AND ANGELS. Enjoy.

Sonata Arctica with Delain and Xandria
Calgary, Alberta Sept 22, 2014

Sonata Arctica was about half way through their North American tour when they hit Calgary on Sept 22nd. Touring in support of their 8th album PARIAH’S CHILD the band has even to Calgary on a few different occasions and I consider myself to have seen them seven or eight times over the years. They brought along Delain and Xandria, for a pretty flawless bill of speedy, clean European Metal.
@ Wembley Arena, London, UK

Football and female-fronted symphonic metal. A perfect ‘match’ conceived only in the mind of Wembley. And its pockets, which must be full of lovely pound coins as a result. See depending on your preference this weekend is the FA Cup semi-final, or Within Temptation’s Wembley Arena soiree. And if you happen to have room in your heart for both, well aren’t you sickeningly lucky. I hope your team lost.
The music’s clearly the important bit, and whilst it doesn’t feel that long ago that Dutch epic-constructors Within Temptation were playing fairly moderate sized venues throughout the UK, the step up to Wembley appears to have been fairly effortless. Such is the fervour that fans are turning up to queue long before the chanters over the way have seen kick off. And they’ll be here long after those fans depart, perhaps with the faint sounds of Within Temptation in their ears, and never knowing what they’re missing.
DELAIN – Interlude
Dutch Symphonic Metallers DELAIN thank their loyal supporters by presenting them with a special release. Interlude is a fantastic blend of brand-new songs, special versions and mixes of popular DELAIN tracks, covers (e.g. “Smalltown Boy” or “Such A Shame”) and the beautiful single “Are You Done With Me”. Thanks to the new mix, the well-known anthem shines with a new-found splendor. The album includes a special bonus DVD featuring exclusive live footage and all clips from the band’s career. Interlude is not only a must for loyal DELAIN fans, but also for those who have not experienced the music by Charlotte Wessels and her bandmembers so far. It is the perfect introduction to the world of DELAIN and the starting point to an emotional and bombastic journey!

Dutch symphonic metal troupe DELAIN have announced the details of their upcoming third full-length studio effort, We Are The Others, now confirmed for North American release this Summer via New Jersey-based top-tier progressive metal label Sensory Records, while CNR Entertainment will handle the release in The Netherlands and Roadrunner Records will handle the rest of Europe.
The follow-up to DELAIN‘s worldwide critically-acclaimed sophomore album April Rain — also released via the same Roadrunner/Sensory partnership in 2009 — We Are The Others broadcasts the band’s epic brand of metal bigger than ever, as always fronted by the soaring, vibrant vocals of Charlotte Wessels and drenched in the glorious keyboard passages of band founder ex-Within Temptation keyboardist, Martijn Westerholt.
Comprised of twelve brand new anthems, We Are The Others is an album littered with concepts in every aspect, from lyrically bridging fantasy with reality and actual events in history, to the steampunk-influenced cover art created by noted pop surrealist Glenn Arthur. DELAIN enlisted a massive production team for the recording, including Jacob Hellner (Rammstein, Apocalyptica), Fredrik Thomander and Anders Wikstrom (Scorpions, Backyard Babies), bringing every element of the album to life. The band met Fear Factory vocalist Burton C. Bell at Wacken Open Air, which resulted in a guest appearance on the album. Sensory’s special North American digipak edition features four additional live bonus tracks exclusive to this pressing. View the cover art for We Are The Others and more AT THIS LOCATION.
Originally conceived by Westerholt as an all-star studio project, the immediate success of the debut album Lucidity quickly saw DELAIN evolving into a full-blown band. The immediate impact of Lucidity put Delain on tour, and as an instant live sensation across Europe, the band’s popularity continued to grow with the release of their second album April Rain. The band found themselves on tour throughout Europe, the United States, Mexico, and Brazil, with some of the highlights of said touring including festival performances at Wacken Open Air, Sonisphere, Lowlands, ProgPower USA, and Hellfest. As the band’s popularity grew they evolved from a support act for Kamelot and Epica into full fledged headliners across Europe.
Stay tuned as DELAIN unveil more new info on the new album as well as tour dates across the planet over the months ahead.
