“The title of our new album is still a question mark to all of us… We have recorded a new album, and it’s a fantastic collection of songs.
At the moment that’s the only affirmative point we can offer…”
-Ian Gillan, December 2012
Eight years after the release of Rapture Of The Deep,Deep Purple, one of the most important and influential British rock bands of all time, have confirmed the release of a new album featuring brand new studio material. This yet-to-be-titled album will be released stateside on April 30, 2013.
Following various songwriting sessions in Europe, the band recorded and mixed the album in Nashville with famed producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Alice Cooper and many others), creating a work that blends the classic 70s Deep Purple spirit with modern production and a progressive mindset. A few working song titles, recently revealed by Ian Gillan are “Out Of Hands”, “Uncommon Man” and “Hell to Pay”.
Deep Purple’s record company earMUSIC will reveal details about the new album as soon as they become available, on a dedicated website where all band members will also be able to post and interact with the fans: www.deeppurple2013.com

Re-machined – A TRIBUTE TO DEEP PURPLE’S MACHINE HEAD
Eagle Records is delighted to announce the release of Re-Machined – A Tribute To Deep Purple’s Machine Head album on September 25 [MSRP $13.99 for CD, digital TBA].
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of this landmark album and in recognition of the influence of the band, and of Machine Head in particular. Some of rock music’s biggest names have each contributed a version of their favorite track on the album to create Re-Machined – A Tribute To Deep Purple’s Machine Head.
Re-Machined features specially recorded tracks from Jimmy Barnes & Joe Bonamassa, Black Label Society, Chickenfoot, former Deep Purple Mk III member Glenn Hughes with Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iron Maiden, the “supergroup” Kings Of Chaos (featuring Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum), Metallica, Carlos Santana&Jacoby Shaddix and Steve Vai.
There are two wildly differing versions of the album’s most famous track “Smoke On The Water”, one from guitar hero Carlos Santana with vocals by Jacoby Shaddix and one from alternative rockers Flaming Lips, and Metallica have contributed their own special take on “When A Blind Man Cries”, a track recorded at the “Machine Head” sessions but originally released as the B-side to “Never Before”.
Iron Maiden’s “Space Truckin’” cover was actually recorded back in 2006. Lead singer Bruce Dickinson explains, “Initially we didn’t think we’d be able to contribute anything due to our touring commitments. Then we remembered ‘Space Truckin’ which we’d recorded as a single B-side during our A Matter Of Life And Death album session, but never used. However now, thanks to Kevin Shirley’s remixing skills, we’re able to include it on Re-Machined”
Initially released as a limited edition Classic Rock “fanpack” on September 3, this is a truly unique release that will appeal to rock fans everywhere. Reuniting for the first time since their collaboration on Black Sabbath’s 1983 Born Again album, Deep Purple´s Ian Gillan and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 when they released the charity singles: “Out Of My Mind” and “Holy Water.” For the recording of these songs, the two rock legends called a few friends, asking for some “help.” Jason Newsted (Metallica), Jon Lord (Deep Purple, 1941-2012), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), and Linde Lindström (HIM) completed the supergroup WhoCares.
Now, “Out Of My Mind” and “Holy Water” will be featured in a special 2-disc set of rarities and recordings culled from the careers of Iommi and Gillan. The WhoCares double-CD will be released in North American on August 28. [MSRP $17.98].
Amongst the tracks are the two original WhoCares songs, Deep Purple’s unreleased studio jam “Dick Pimple,” a song from Repo Depo (a band Ian Gillan formed before the Deep Purple reunion) which never released an official song before this CD. Also included is “Zero The Hero,” from the aforementioned Black Sabbath Born Again release (which is the only album to feature Gillan on lead vocals), as well as two unreleased songs from Tony Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes.
The “Out of My Mind” and “Holy Water” singles were a joyful and inspired moment from two musicians with nothing to prove, willing to support music where music is considered a luxury. The spark to bring Iommi and Gillan in a studio together again was to finance the rebuilding of a music school in Armenia they had visited together on various occasions in past years.
“As I said once in the song ‘Razzle Dazzle,’ it’s a real fine line between an orgy of destruction and a wonderful time,’” states Gillan. “The destruction of conformity in this case: some of these pieces never really fitted into their contemporary program and got sidelined or forgotten, and some of the album tracks never had much exposure. As the track listing for this album came together, I noticed many of the titles had character similarities: a combination of freshness as they finally felt the sun on their backs and rebellion in a ‘yeah told you so’ kind of way. And that adds up to a wonderful time and more money for the music school we are building in Armenia.
“The ad-hoc benefit WhoCares band,” continues Gillan, “was a band put together by Tony Iommi and myself on a flight home from Yerevan, where we’d been deeply humbled by the honor and expectation bestowed upon us. Well that’s it really, in a nutshell, so to speak, what more can I say? It’s all there in the music.”
The release of this very special 2-CD set is a must for all Deep Purple fans and fans of hard rock.

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Jon Lord, who suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today, Monday 16th July at theLondon Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was surrounded by his loving family.
Jon Lord, the legendary keyboard player with Deep Purple co-wrote many of the bands legendary songs including Smoke On The Water and played with many bands and musicians throughout his career.
Best known for his Orchestral work Concerto for Group & Orchestra first performed at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969 and conducted by the renowned Malcolm Arnold, a feat repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and Deep Purple.
Jon’s solo work was universally acclaimed when he eventually retired from Deep Purple in 2002.
All-star band contains members of Dream Theater, Deep Purple and Alpha Rev
While the band name Flying Colors might be unfamiliar to you, the members of this rock supergroup have individually sold millions of records and strong fan base around the world. Flying Colors‘ self-titled debut album is released today through Music Theories/Mascot Label Group/MRI.
The members of Flying Colors are drummer Michael Portnoy (Dream Theater,) guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple,) vocalist Casey McPherson (Alpha Rev,) Neal Morse (keyboards,) and Dave LaRue (bass.) Flying Colors marks Portnoy’s first project since he departed Dream Theater.
The seeds of Flying Colors‘ formation were sown in 2008, when executive producer Bill Evans brought the idea to each of the musicians as well as to producer Peter Collins. Intrigued by the idea of working together, the four musicians wrote and recorded this album in just nine days.
Portnoy says “This album has bits and pieces of what you’d expect from each of us.
The sum of all it’s parts led to brand new, uncharted territory for everyone involved.”
Dave LaRue says “It was quite an experience. The band moved at a fast pace, ideas flying around the room at all times. Sections of tunes were arranged, then rearranged. Ideas were tried every which way until we made them work, or in some cases, discarded them altogether. Just keeping track of everything was a challenge! It’s been an inspiring challenge melding folk, prog, pop and metal all into one big recording.”

Deep Purple: Live at Mile One in St. John's, NL, Canada. Feb 2 1012.
Last night, Thursday Feb 2 2012, Deep Purple kicked off their 2012 North American tour at Mile One Stadium in St. Johns, NL, Canada.
The band took to the stage at 8:30pm and played for a little over 90 mins. All were in fine form except vocalist Ian Gillan who was wearing a leg brace which severely limited his mobility. It appeared he might of been in a little pain from the injury, but he soldiered on and gave a very respectable performance. Some jaw dropping fretwork from guitarist Steve Morse was also in order and he showed his chops and sense of melody with a sweet lead guitar tone. Keyboardist Don Airey delivered an inspired solo which covered musical styles from blues to classical throwing in some parts from classics, as well as a few notes from his own classics (Ozzy’s “Mr. Crowley”).
While the stadium wasn’t sold out (shame on you St. John’s) there was a good turn out and everyone left happy! Watch for a complete review and more live shots of these classic hard rock/metal legends in Metal-Rules.com soon!

“I’m letting them pick the song they want to do and the way they want to do it,” Wendy Dio tells Artisan News. Check out the report below:
U.K. hard rock pioneers Deep Purple have been annual visitors in Finland for a long time and this year made no exception here. The current tour “The Songs That Built Rock” includes also a Frankfurt Philharmonic Orchestra with whom the band performed a string of their biggest hits as well some rarely played gems. In fact, it’s already been six years since they released their latest studio release RAPTURE OF THE DEEP but it looks that there is still demand as they now sold almost 7000 tickets for their show for the Hartwall Arena.
On July 16, 2011, Deep Purple performed on the closing night of Switzerland’s prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival by re-inventing their classic catalog with the help of a symphony orchestra. This night will forever be emblazoned upon the brains of Deep Purple fans around the world when Eagle Rock Entertainment releases Live At Montreux 2011 simultaneously in DVD [MSRP $14.98], Blu-Ray [MSRP $19.98] and 2CD [MSRP $17.98] packages on November 8.
The whole night has been preserved in crystal clarity via high definition for the DVD and Blu-Ray releases. The sound on the 2CD set—DTS Surround Sound, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Stereo—is superb. Included on the DVD and Blu-Ray is a bonus in-depth band interview. Such classics as “Highway Star,” “Strange Kind of Woman,” “Lazy,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Hush,” “Woman From Tokyo,” “Black Night,” “Smoke On The Water” and 11 other gems, as performed with the orchestral sweep behind them, certainly spurred the band on. Ian Gillan (vocals), Ian Paice (drums), Roger Glover (bass), Steve Morse (guitar) and Don Airey (keyboards) can be seen visibly pleased with the results of the orchestra, as directed by Stephen “BK” Bentley-Klein.
This 115-minute concert is emblematic of the kind of shows that Deep Purple has been putting on with amazing consistency as they criss-cross the globe. It’s what their fans have come to expect. The current orchestra tour has proven them capable of transcending genre limitations to reach out for the kind of all-encompassing theatrical presentation that’s hard to forget. Now, with this release, Deep Purple fans around the globe can thrill to this extraordinary pairing of symphonic textures and the hardest of Classic Rock.

Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972, Live in London and MK III: The Final Concerts
Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the August 16 release of four double-discs of the deepest of Deep Purple’s onstage action: Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972,Live In Londonand MK III:The Final Concerts. [MSRP $13.98]
Scandinavian Nights, from 1970, features the most classic of Purple lineups, lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover. Recorded for Swedish radio while on tour in support of their groundbreaking In Rock album, the band, a well-oiled machine of epic proportions, rips through elongated versions of “Speed King,” “Into The Fire,” “Child In Time,” “Wring That Neck,” a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” (as a Paice drum solo), “Mandrake Root” and “Black Night.”
The same lineupIn Concert 1970-1972 recorded two shows for the BBC. The 1970 gig is four songs stretched out to almost 50 minutes in true DP style like no other band ever — “Speed King,” “Child In Time,” “Wring That Neck” and “Mandrake Root.” In the ’72 concert, they performed every song off their classic Machinehead album (except “Pictures Of Home”) including a 21-minute version of “Space Truckin’.
This is the first time Live In London has been released in the United States on CD.Complete with new frontman David Coverdale and new bassist Glenn Hughes (essentially giving the band two lead singers), the band were back home in London in 1974 performing in support of the Burn album. The band, indeed, burned through the title track, “Might Just Take Your Life,” “Lay Down Stay Down,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water” and, on Disc #2, “You Fool No One” and “Space Truckin’.”
A year later, with no idea its lead guitarist and co-founding member Ritchie Blackmore had already decided to leave the band, Deep Purple, with Coverdale and Hughes now solidly entrenched and performing magnificently, embarked on a European tour in support of Stormbringer. MK III The Final Concertsexcitingly documents Blackmore’s swan song with the band on “Burn,” “Stormbringer,” “Gypsy,” “Lady Double Dealer,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water,” “You Fool No One,” “Space Truckin’,” “Going Down/Highway Star,” and alternate versions of “Mistreated” and “You Fool No One.”

On June 28, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Deep Purple’s Phoenix Rising – a two-hour-plus revelatory documentary including 30 minutes of never-before-seen (not even on bootleg) onstage footage from Japan. Phoenix Rising will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, & in a special two-disc DVD/CD package.
The release is cause for celebration amongst Purple fans due to the rarity of material. Extensive interviews with keyboardist Jon Lord and bassist Glenn Hughes tell the tale of a band caught by circumstance into one of its most controversial, extreme and exciting eras of its long career. Ian Gillan and Roger Glover were gone. A young unknown singer by the name of David Coverdale was recruited as was bassist Hughes. The results were the albums Burn and Stormbringer (both released in 1974). But then Ritchie Blackmore left the band. Against all odds, they rocked on, recruiting Tommy Bolin (from Zephyr and The James Gang). The album Come Taste The Band (1975) documents the short-lived Bolin era, an era that all came crashing down when the band announced in July of 1976 that it was breaking up. By December, Bolin would be dead due to a heroin overdose. Nine years of silence would ensue.
The never-before-seen 30 minutes, “Rises Over Japan,” has the Coverdale/Lord/Bolin/Hughes/Paice lineup delivering the goods in 1976 on eight songs: “Burn,” “Getting Tighter,” “Love Child,” “Smoke On The Water,” “Lazy,” “Homeward Strut,” “You Keep On Moving” and “Stormbringer.” (The double-disc package contains these eight songs on CD.) This segment is some of the only video footage that showcases Tommy Bolin performing in Deep Purple.
The 90-minute documentary portion, “Getting Tighter,” recounts the trials and tribulations of a band in turmoil, riding the rock’n’roll roller coaster to total excess. With its live images, backstage footage, never-before-told stories and original video material carefully culled from years of research, it’s a veritable bonanza for Purple fans and fans of Rock History. No stone is left unturned…and sometimes it’s not pretty. Gritty, truthful, wild, this is the story of an era in the 1970s that is simply unforgettable.
Whitesnake released their latest album NEVERMORE in March. The album has received great response and it marks the bands return more into its bluesy roots. The band has been regular visitors here in Finland since their rebirth in 2003 and this tour didn’t make any exception. It seems that there’s still good demand for Coverdale and his Snakes when approximately 4000 fans found their way to Old Hall in Helsinki.
BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, IRON MAIDEN Members Recording New Song For Charity
In 1989, BLACK SABBATH’s Tony Iommi and DEEP PURPLE’s Ian Gillan were just a few names in a long list of talent involved in the re-recording of the classic Deep Purple track ‘Smoke On The Water’. This song was re-recorded to raise money for those affected by the Leninakan earthquake that struck Armenia in 1988. In October of last year, both Iommi and Gillan travelled to Armenia to see how the funds raised had helped the local community. On their trip they visited a music school only to find it being run out of temporary accommodation, it was only location not to have been rebuilt 20 years after the earthquake had struck.
Next week Iommi and Gillan will be heading back into the studio, joined by keyboardist Jon Lord (ex-Deep Purple, WHITESNAKE) and drummer Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN) to record a new track to raise money to rebuild the Armenian music school. More information about the charity single ‘Out Of My Mind’ and behind the scenes photos will follow soon.
