DECAPITATED: CARNIVAL IS FOREVER TRACK-BY-TRACK COMMENTARY

July 11th, 2011
Decapitated - Carnival Is Forever

Decapitated - Carnival Is Forever

Guitarist Wacek “Vogg” Kiełtyka of Polish technical death metal band DECAPITATED offers the following commentary on the songs that appear on the band’s latest album, Carnival Is Forever, out now in North America and on July 15th in Europe:

The Knife – “The opening track, without an intro, is a ruthless blow from the very beginning; a 100% metal piece – no fucking around, no looking back. The sharp riff of the verse slightly resembles Pantera’s style; the middle riff is merged with a sampled fragment of George Bush’s speech. After that, a fast solo and a slightly slower part to catch a breath followed by a totally fucking aggressive ending, and then on with the next song…”

United – “The second merciless attack. An insane riff and punching up resembling finishing off a victim, a short pause and let’s go – a verse in the vein of good old Slayer followed by blast beats with a sharp and rhythmically twisted riff repeated twice and a solo. And here’s a new thing: the solo’s only with a bass guitar in the background – another blow. The ending part is based on a powerful riff oscillating in the old thrash style. All is complemented by Rasta [Rafał Piotrowski]’s mad vocals. Kerim has described this song as the most physically demanding from the whole album. Total power from start to end. Okay, so we’ve got two torpedoes for starters and then we’re entering the land of…”

Carnival Is Forever – “…the title track, an over-9-minute composition. It’s opening with a minute guitar intro, a simple, clean channel motive, very calm, a virtually meditative beginning in contrast to the previous two tracks. The first riff – 2,000 tons and double kick, a bit like Morbid [Angel], but only as an inspiration. The song is progressing on its own tempo without any rush, preparing the listener to enter into the land of strange sounds and climates followed by the culmination in the form of a totally crushing riff based on a very simple groovy rhythmical pattern adorned with a blast beat on a china cymbal. In the middle of the song, another change in vibe – clean guitar channel, meditation; we are hibernating in space for about two minutes and suddenly you’re getting smashed straight in your face with the return of the first riff and here we are at the end of the song – an almost trance-like riff with a couple of extraterrestrial sounds courtesy of our guest [Bartosz] Hervy from Blindead. The keyboard stays to the end introducing the next song…”

Homo Sum – “My favorite song on the new album. I think this piece aspires to be the next ‘Spheres of Madness.’ It’s got it all: total power, destruction, a wicked riff, blast beats, a great arrangement and the middle part has a progressive feel that makes the listener drift away into a different universe. Shivers.”

404 – “Another hit. :) Slightly Soulfly-ish/Meshuggah-ish/Gojira-ish. I guess everybody has some inspirations. Nice flowing piece consisting of two parts with different motives: the verse riff based on a heavy rhythmical motive followed by a melodic riff. In the second part, there’s a complete change of mood: we are speeding out of control and the song is growing in power. Then a great solo and the fastest blast beat on the album are finishing the song – a savage live tune.”

A View From A Hole – “Once again we’ve got a change of atmosphere, clean channel, a simple guitar motive combining with drums after a while and then suddenly let’s fucking go! Guitars and bass are taking over – total darkness and atmosphere – Celtic Frost and Black Sabbath together have formed a new band. Distorted vocal… it’s growing darker and suddenly it’s getting livelier thanks to a faster, damn difficult riff and twisted drums that create a great groove and we’re getting to the climax in the form of blast beat, the pure energy of which leaves no doubt this song feels like sliding a knife into butter or like a cold beer the morning after partying with Behemoth. :)”

Pest – “Asesino meets Pantera; fast forward and with no mercy! Straight to the point – blow between the eyes. The right ending to the metal part of the album??? And…”

Silence – “…I’ll leave it to you. I’m not revealing everything right now!”

Produced by DECAPITATED guitarist Wacek “Vogg” Kiełtyka and sound engineered by Malta Arkadiusz Malczewski, Carnival Is Forever is the follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis. Drums & mixing duties on the new album were handled by Daniel Bergstrand (Behemoth, Meshuggah, Dimmu Borgir).

Guitarist & founding member Wacław “Vogg” Kiełtyka discusses the album title and cover art by Lukasz Jaszak:

“Carnival: war, rape, lies, pathology, evil displayed through certain events and situations of the latest years in the world.  Is Forever – I guess it doesn’t need explaining.  Both the text and the title are bitterly ironic. [The art is v]ery intriguing and quite strange for a metal album but surely staying in memory.  A vital thing is that it’s a photo. We did not want any computer graphics this time or anything artificial or plastic.  The same regards the production of the album. We had actually been thinking about getting a painting for the cover but unfortunately we couldn’t do it.  Maybe next time.”

DECAPITATED ISSUE FINAL STUDIO REPORT

April 5th, 2011
DECAPITATED

DECAPITATED

Technical death metal band DECAPITATED have issued the final report from Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland regarding the recording for their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis:

“The session is over!  We are 100% happy with what we have created.  The final effect is mind-blowing and we ourselves are surprised with the outcome of a two-month recording session and a six-month period of polishing the material.  Worth mentioning is that some of the riffs were done in the days of the prior DECAPITATED. People have changed, but the spirit has remained untouched and despite a few innovations, it is still the DECAPITATED you all know.

“As we had mentioned before, we have been consistently striving to get the ‘true,’ organic and natural sound.  The sum of all ingredients has resulted in a staggering power and a crazy adrenaline shot.  Moreover, to our surprise, something else has emerged… insanity, madness, inexplicable power.  This is the factor that most of [the] top ‘trite’ productions lack.  Over the whole music hovers some idea, some concept that infects the listeners like a disease.  This is what the music is always all about and the reason why you return to some records years after years – it’s the emotions… We are damn proud, fulfilled, self-confident and are looking forward to confronting the new material live.  All the best!”

DECAPITATED’s new album has produced by Wacek Kiełtyka and sound engineered by Malta Arkadiusz Malczewski.  Drums were recorded with Daniel Bergstrand (BEHEMOTH, MESHUGGAH, DIMMU BORGIR, KEEP OF KALESSIN, DEFLESHED), who also handled mixing duties.  The band will be self-releasing the new album in their native Poland.

DECAPITATED’s line-up includes: Wacław “Vogg” Kiełtyka on guitar, Kerim “Krimh” Lechner (Thorns Of Ivy, Tone Intimacy) on drums, Rafał Piotrowski (Ketha, Forgotten Souls) on lead vocals, and Filip “Heinrich” Hałucha (Vesenia, Rootwater, Unsun, Masachist) on bass.

DECAPITATED: STUDIO REPORT #6

March 23rd, 2011
Rafał Piotrowski recording vocals

Rafał Piotrowski recording vocals

Polish technical death metallers DECAPITATED continue their work at Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland recording their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis.

Guitarist & founding member Wacek “Vogg”Kiełtyka checks in once again from the studio:

“All right guys!  We are slowly heading towards the end of the session. We have been here for six weeks now and we can feel the first signs of fatigue but we are still holding tight. We will be recording the vocals for the fifth song today. Rafał[Piotrowski] is in excellent form and his vocals are awesome. We have decided for a more middle range timbre because we felt it was the most powerful one. The vocals contribute a great deal to the intensity of the music and therefore the material has gained even more in its potency and destroying might. I am not going to expand on the lyrics right now as I would like to leave it for later, and the same goes for the music. The author of the lyrics would like to remain anonymous for now. It is a person you all know well and I can only say that the lyrics will be quite controversial and will pertain to our surrounding reality.

“To conclude, we are soon finishing the vocals, starting to record the solos and the album will be set for the mixing, which we have actually started already. Daniel [Bergstrand] is just finishing mixing the drums and starting with the guitars.”

DECAPITATED will soon be announcing the new album’s title and present the album artwork.

DECAPITATED

DECAPITATED

Polish technical death metallers DECAPITATED continue their work at Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland recording their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis.

Guitarist & founding member Wacek “Vogg”Kiełtyka checks in once again from the studio:

“Over the last few days, we have recorded riffs with distant sounds and effects. I must admit that it sounds broad. It has an incredible  space and is deep. We have found some really interesting themes like ‘Sonar’ and ‘Satan’s Bees.’  Yesterday we put the last traces of the basic guitars and we’re beginning vocals. Everything is going according to plan and in 2 weeks we should finish the session.

“Rafał will certainly cope with his work and put down decent vocals. He is totally boozed and so everything should go fine. Solos and clean guitars are left – which are totally novum in Decap – and then the whole album is ready.  The material begins to mature from day to day, and now I hear that it will be a concert album.”

DECAPITATED will soon be announcing the new album’s title and present the album artwork.

DECAPITATED: STUDIO REPORT #4

March 8th, 2011

Polish technical death metal band DECAPITATED continue their work at Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland recording their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis.

Bassist Filip “Heinrich” Hałucha checks in from the studio:

“The sound we’ve worked out for the bass recording is huge, nasty, and crushing.  Thanks to this, we’ve come up with a couple of arrangements where the bass comes out of the background and plays the major part.  I must admit that, with his old school approach, Arek ‘Malta’ Malczewski has fit well in the concept of this album.  His choice of instrument levels was superb – it all sounds mighty yet there’s no mutual interference.  The bass recording took us three days plus an extra day for sound search.  After much deliberation and testing different solutions, we chose a configuration of two amps: a tube Ampeg SVT Classic and a transistor B4R, one of which had huge distortion.  I should add that we did not use any line signals and all the signals come from microphones, which recently has been a rarity as far as bass recording goes in metal music.  Taking into account the ‘no compromise’ approach of Vogg and Malta, it has been undoubtedly the hardest and the most advanced session I have ever participated in.  Tracking lasted from the beginning of a song to its end; ‘copying and pasting’ any parts was out of the question.  Due to this, the session was much more demanding and time-consuming, but the final effect is the music sounding more lively and natural.  Everything has been recorded using instruments only; it’s awesome without all of these digital fireworks – advanced editions, plastic drums, pasted riffs, etc.  It reeks of the old metal spirit.  There ‘s proper metal groove and speed but also a specific vibe which adds up to what this type of music is all about.”

DECAPITATED’s fifth studio album is being produced by Wacek Kiełtyka and sound engineered by Arkadiusz “Malta” Malczewski.  Drums were recorded with Daniel Bergstrand (BEHEMOTH, MESHUGGAH, DIMMU BORGIR, KEEP OF KALESSIN, DEFLESHED), who is also handling mixing duties.  The band will be self-releasing the new album in their native Poland.

Vogg with Malta @ Soundboard

Vogg with Malta @ Soundboard

Polish technical death metal band DECAPITATED continue their work at Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland recording their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis.

Guitarist & founding member Wacek “Vogg”Kiełtyka checks in once again from the studio:

Hi Everyone,

We are half-way through with guitar tracking. All is going according to the plan and in a few days we are starting with the bass. The guitars sound heavy yet very selective. I must admit we have come up with a very original sound that in my opinion resembles ‘black storm clouds.’  Heinrich [bassist] is coming to the studio the day after tomorrow and we will crack on with the bass then. Malta is a very demanding engineer and he is controlling the whole situation meticulously. The new material is beginning to take its shape and it is getting more and more interesting. Take it easy folks!”

DECAPITATED: STUDIO REPORT #1

February 14th, 2011

Polish technical death metal band DECAPITATED are currently at Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland recording their follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis.  Guitarist & founding member Wacek Kiełtyka offers the following first report from the studio:

“Hi there,

We’ve just started the recording session of the new album at the studio of Radio Gdansk which is brilliantly equipped and has some wicked recording space. This time ‘round, we are working with Malta (Arek Malczewski) and Daniel Bergstrand who have been with us to set up the drums sound… and so far everything has been going surprisingly well.

Right now, [drummer] Kerimh [Lechner] is finishing the last two tunes. I must say the drums sound really cool. Daniel has surprised us with his approach towards recording using millions of – often weird – solutions, e.g. a piano or using the corridor of Radio Gdansk. :)

We are recording fully live drums – no triggers or plastic sounding stuff whatsoever, which, especially for Kerimh, renders the session more demanding than he had expected; but because of this, in my opinion, the sound will be original and will help us to avoid the so-called ‘machine gun effect.’  We are going to record eight songs altogether and the album will be about forty minutes long. It looks like this time, our recording style is pretty ‘old-school’- with live drums and no recording of double guitar tracks, which means one guitar per side.

Daniel is just on his way back to Sweden now and we are starting to record the skins for the last two songs so I gotta be going now.

Check out the pics and till the next time, Yo.”

Drummer Kerim “Krimh” Lechner checks-in about drums:

“Hi Guys!

I just wanted to tell you what is going on in the studio.  Today is the second day of actual drum recording and it’s going really well!   We probably could finish about four songs today.  We will see how the next days will look like, but I think we could finish drums earlier.   We do not have any bigger problems so it feels good to record in this place.  The acoustics of this room sound great so I enjoy playing all these songs a lot.  Today is also the last day with Daniel Bergstrand, who prepared the drum sound for us – and he definitely knows what he’s doing!!

When I listen to the songs right now, I believe that this album will be strong.  Different in some ways, but I feel confident about the new material.  Being part of the new line-up and recording the first album after the long break is definitely a big thing for me.  After all those shows we played together, this is our new challenge.  It’s not easy but I like challenges!

So that’s it for today. Stay tuned for more news coming up!  Cheers!”
