Chuck Schuldiner: The pain of a genius
Interviewed in September 1999 by Patricia Renda
A few months ago, we received a memo from Nuclear Blast saying that, for everybody’s amazement, Chuck Schuldiner, the leader of the world’s most important death metal band, was about to begin a series of treatments against a brain tumor, discovered right after the end of the recordings of Control Denied’s CD - his other band apart from Death. During August, after wishing his best and his full recover, we were lucky to be one of the twenty magazines around the world to receive the Control Denied CD, entitled "The Fragile Art of Existence", enclosed with a proposal to interview Chuck himself. We surely couldn’t let this opportunity to talk to him slip through our fingers. After all, we wanted to know how things are and wish him the best of luck personally. Here’s what happened during this cheerful interview.

James Murphy Interviewed in Jan. 1997 by EvilG
Testament update January 1997: The news about Testament seems to be changing quickly. First the band broke up. James Murphy went off to release his new CD “Convergences” and Chuck Billy and Eric Peterson stuck it out. They went by the name ”Dog Faced Gods” and on drums was former Machine Head member Chris Kontos. Chris has since left and Chuck and Eric have decided to stick with the Testament name. Lets hope they get a band together SOON and continue in the same vein as LOW.
Well here some new info on what James Murphy has been up to and the news from the Testament camp.

In a career that has spanned over twenty years, legendary drummer Gene Hoglan is a true pioneer of the heavy metal plains. Dark Angel, Testament, Death, Strapping Young Lad?with jobs like this on his resume, chances are you have heard the bludgeoning skinsmanship of Hoglan. Besides the big-name bands, Hoglan also dabbles in several side projects?both metal and non-metal?which allow him to branch out and explore the many facets of drumming. Hoglan?s involvement with Devin Townsend both in his solo work and in Strapping Young Lad has been a relationship coming up on ten years with no signs of slowing down.
Strapping Young Lad unleashed their latest sonic assault, entitled ALIEN, back in March and I got the chance to speak with Hoglan on March 21st?the day before its release. Having met Hoglan on many occasions at local Vancouver shows, our 95-minute conversation was loose and full of laughs but also packed with insight into his many projects both young and old, as well as touching on Internet rumors, ALIEN, the ?real? Devin Townsend, his audition with Slayer, and many other things?.

Bart Frydrychowicz and Yanic Bercier of Quo Vadis
Interviewed by EvilG Transcription by Nick All pictures taken by Louis-Charles Levasseur and used by permission of troisrivieresmetal.com.
Quo Vadis is the best prog/death metal band I’ve heard since Into Eternity. Both are Canadian bands, but Quo Vadis comes from the burgeoning Quebec metal scene where a long list of extreme metal bands has emerged. For many it all began with VoiVod in the 80′s to newer bands like Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Gorguts, Martyr, Oblivion, etc… After I heard the new Quo Vadis album DEFIANT IMAGINATION, I was instantly hooked. The album is miles ahead of everything they’ve done prior to this release. If you are into progressive death metal and bands like Death, you should already know who these guys are. I was given the opportunity to interview guitarist Bart Frydrychowicz and drumgod Yanic Bercier of Quo Vadis. The lengthy (50+min) interview covered things like the new album and why it took a long time coming, the guest appearance of bass legend Steve DiGiorgio on the album, and the band’s determination to get on the road and to make this album the one that really puts them on the international metal map.
