TUSKA OPEN AIR 2010 Festival

TUSKA OPEN AIR FESTIVAL
Kaisaniemi Park
Helsinki, FINLAND
REVIEW AND PICS BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ AND ARTO LEHTINEN
Sad but true, Tuska will not be held in the heart of Helsinki in the upcoming years. The park of Kaisaniemi will be a construction zone as the whole area will be improved to be better and more enjoyable. However, it is going to be interesting to see how the new area will work for metal bands. At least the upcoming area has proven itself to be a good festival area as there have been a couple of festivals and gigs arranged there so far. This is a farewell to the Kaisaniemi park and the current Tuska formation.
Enjoy the review and above all enjoy our pics.

MEGADETH – bassist David Ellefson
DAVID ELLEFSON
INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ
Transcription by Antaura Zed
David Ellefson is a co-founder and original bassist for legendary metal band Megadeth. Other than vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine, he was the only constant member of Megadeth from the time of their establishment in 1983 to the group’s hiatus in 2002. During that period Megadeth released nine highly successful albums like: RUST IN PEACE, PEACE SELLS … BUT WHO’S BUYING and YOUTHANASIA which are nowadays a thrash metal classics. Mustaine subsequently reformed Megadeth in 2004 but without David Ellefson and it wasn’t until last February when he finally re-joined in the band. During his off-Megadeth years, Ellefson worked with several different bands and projects including: Soulfly, Tim “Ripper” Owens, Killing Machine, F5, and all-star cover band Hail!. Megadeth are currently on tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of RUST IN PEACE and in July 2010 the band arrived to headline the Tuska Festival in Helsinki. Here’s what Dave had to say about their reunion, the projects, and about the future of Megadeth… read on!

MEGADETH – Dave Mustaine

Interview with Dave Mustaine
Conducted by Robert Williams
Videography courtesy of Sandra Torres
For the first time ever, North American thrash metal fans are witnessing Megadeth’s monumental "Rust In Peace" album performed live in it’s entirety as part of "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour". A live in-concert DVD has been filmed already as part of the North American leg of the tour and plans are underway to take "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour" to Mexico and South America. With the return of bassist Dave Ellefson rounding out perhaps Megadeth’s strongest lineup to date, this current tour absolutely scorches everything in it’s path and is not to be missed. Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently took the time to talk metal with Metal-Rules.com and filled us in on the return of Dave Ellefson, "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour", the launch of Megadeth radio as well as his upcoming autobiography.

Jimmy DeGrasso – Alice Cooper, Hail!, F5, ex- Megadeth, Y&T, Suicidal Tendencies

JIMMY DeGRASSO
INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ
TRANSCRIPTION BY PETTERI LIMNELL, EVILG AND RICK
American born drummer Jimmy DeGrasso is probably best known for his work with Megadeth, but he’s also been involved with many other interesting bands and projects during his long career. In mid 80′s, after moving from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, Jimmy first did studio sessions with the “Prince of Darkness” himself, Ozzy Osbourne, before getting his first permanent job from Californian rockers Y & T in 1986. After many successful years with them, Jimmy decided to leave Y & T in 1990 and in the subsequent years he toured with such names as Lita Ford and Alice in Chains before joining the thrash/punk/hardcore crossover group Suicidal Tendencies in 2004. Unfortunately, the band broke up soon later and next Jimmy joined Alice Cooper’s touring band. He’s been working with Alice on and off since then. In 1998 he joined Megadeth and stayed with them until the band (temporarily) disbanded in 2002. Today Jimmy is a highly sought after session and touring drummer. He’s also a full time member of all-star band “HAIL!” along with his former Megadeth bandmate David Ellefsson, Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser, and vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens. Jimmy has also another band with Ellefsson called F5 and they released the album THE RECKONING in 2008. In December (2009) Jimmy came to Finland with Alice Cooper and then I had a chance to sit down with him and discuss his past, present and near future plans. READ ON!

MEGADETH – James Lomenzo

JAMES LOMENZO
Brooklyn born James Lomenzo started his musician career in the late 70′s. His first bands included such names as Empty Sky, Clockwork and Rondinelli but it wasn’t until 1984 before he found big success after joining hard rock band White Lion. PRIDE was released in 1987 and with the help of hit singles “Wait” and “When Children Cry” it sold over two million copies in U.S alone. That band did huge tours opening for names like Aerosmith, Ozzy and AC/DC and they were on the top of their game. Ironically named BIG GAME came out two years later but although it failed to reach its predecessor sales, it still went to gold. The last White Lion album MAIN ATTRACTION was released in 1991 but its sales figures stayed proportionally low. James and drummer Greg D’Angelo left the soon to be disbanded group in 1991. James’s following years included touring with former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley and forming a brand new band called Pride and Glory together with Ozzy guitarist Zakk Wylde and drummer Brian Tichy. Unfortunately, that band didn’t last too long and they split up after just one album which was released in 1994. James and Brian Tichy continued working together and joined Slash’s Snakepit -touring in 1995. Few years later James joined David Lee Roth’s band and recorded the album DIAMOND DAVE with him. In 2004 Zakk Wylde asked James to join his Black Label Society and James agreed. HANGOVER MUSIC VOL 4 came out soon and although James briefly split again with Zakk, he soon returned and another album MAFIA came out in 2005. Later, on the same year, James decided to leave Black Label Society for the last time and try to find some new challenges. It wasn’t too long before it was announced that James was chosen as new bassist for legendary thrash metal band Megadeth. James played his first show with the band in March 2006 in Dubai. UNITED ABOMINATIONS was released in May of 2007 and since its release band has been more or a less constantly on tour across the world. Band started their European leg of the tour on last February from Helsinki and then we were able to sit down with James and talk about various topics including the current state of Megadeth, James’s work with some of his former bands as well as about many other interesting things…

Megadeth live in Stockholm 2005
Megadeth in Stockholm, Sweden
Feb 15th, 2005
Review by Marko Syrjala and Jarno Huovila
Pictures by Marko Syrjala
In 2004, just as the sparkle of hope glowed dim, Dave Mustaine struck back with the excellent new album ‘The System Has Failed’, which especially after the less than stellar ‘The World Needs A Hero’ release, was a most welcome return to the high standard of song writing that we’ve come to expect from Dave. After the album release Mustaine surprisingly announced that the forth coming tour will be definitely be their last ever. Now they are now midst of their farewell tour called "Blackmail The Universe" and we were lucky to witness bands brilliant performance in Stockholm.
