Bloodstock Open Air 2013
@ Catton Park, Derbyshire, UK
8th – 11th August 2013
Review by Anna Dumpe & Ben Spencer
Imagine a weekend of nothing but pure heavy fucking metal.
Imagine being surrounded by the friendliest 15,000 people who share the same passion for heavy metal music and lifestyle. Imagine a place where it is respectable to have beer for breakfast and drinking until you drop in an accomplishment. Imagine a festival where you can see over 100 heavy metal bands and pretty much none of them suck.
Ladies and gents, this ain’t no heavy metal fairytale!
This is Bloodstock Open Air – the greatest heavy metal music festival of our times. It’s a place where metal heads run free, headbang until their heads roll off, shout ‘SLAYEEER!’ and avoid shower for 4 days straight.
It just does not get any better than this.
Our Metal-Rules.com UK team were privileged to attend Bloodstock Open Air 2013 and see things for themselves…here’s a ‘little’ insight of what went down.

Ffrom left to right: Lord Ahriman (guitars), Dominator (drums), Jens Prueter (Head Of A&R at Century Media Records Europe), Zornheym (bass), Nachtgarm (vocals), Chaq Mol (guitars)
Swedish black metal legends DARK FUNERAL and Century Media Records are proud to announce the signing of a worldwide deal for the next 3 albums.
Guitarist and founding member Lord Ahriman comments: “Our bad luck with labels in the past has for sure been very frustrating. So it is with great pleasure to finally be able to turn the page, move on and start a new dark chapter in the DARK FUNERAL saga, as we join the great Century Media family. Century Media has more than enough proven to be a stable and highly professional label. And we are totally looking forward to this new cooperation, which I’m sure will prove to be very satisfying and successful for both parts. Hail the goat!”
Jens Prueter, Head Of A&R at Century Media Records Europe, comments: “I always respected DARK FUNERAL for their endurance and integrity. They’ve gone through some hard times, but never gave up and also never gave in to compromise on their musical and aesthetic vision. Almost 20 years after their formation it’s still the same powerhouse of unmerciful black metal and the new line-up is stronger and more focused than in the past. Thanks to Lord Ahriman and the whole band! Looking forward to their 20th anniversary in 2013 with a new album In The Sign Of The Horns!”
Founded back in 1993 in the depths of Sweden by Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon, DARK FUNERAL has proven to be one of the leaders of the second wave of black metal among other legends such as MARDUK and DARKTHRONE. While other black metal bands lost themselves through the late 90’s / early 2000’s, DARK FUNERAL managed to remain faithful to their roots, be it musically, aesthetically and lyrically. After 5 albums, hundreds of live rituals, the band leaded by Lord Ahriman and now featuring Nachtgarm on vocals is ready to embark on a new satanic crusade with Century Media Records.
Expect nothing but pure black metal the way it was meant to be.

Lord Ahriman admits that it surely was not an easy task to find a worthy replacement for Emperor Magus Caligula, who has been doing an amazing job for Dark Funeral during the past 15 years. The Lord says that he has not only been “the vocalist” for the band, but the also a very good friend of his and he always will be!
Anyway 10 months of intense search worldwide have finally given result and he is VERY proud to announce and welcome “NACHTGARM” to the horde.
Lord Ahriman: “I think, I can speak for everyone in the band and say that besides completely knocking us down with the strength of his vocals and wide register, what truly blew us away was his presence, energy and the amazing spirit he showed during the final audition. He just came into the rehearsal room, found and took his rightful spot. And then just set the whole place on hellfire! It’s really hard to explain “that” certain feeling one is looking for, but once you get it, you just know that you’ve found the right man for the job. And that is something we all got “deluxe”. No doubt about that! Mankind has no idea what is coming upon them. And I can’t wait to bring this maniac on tour for the world to experience DARK FUNERAL in the most intense and hellish way ever!
During the 10 month we have been looking for a new vocalist and drummer, we have received over 1000 applications. The interest to join DARK FUNERAL has been way over expectation and quite overwhelming to say the least. And we would like to take this opportunity to thank EVERYONE who applied for the jobs. One thing is for sure: There are a lot of unknown talents out there. And once they’ve found the right band to deliver their goods, I’m sure we all will hear from many of these guys in the future. Good luck!”
Chaq Mol: When Emperor Magus Caligula quit the band my first thought was “how the fuck will we be able to find a worthy replacement now?”. In my eyes he was the best vocalist in the Black Metal scene. Anyhow, after we had listened through a couple of hundreds applicants, there were two guys that really stood out and sounded very promising indeed. The question now was, would they nail it on a live audition too, and would their personalities be of that kind we were looking for?! Well, after 10 month search we finally found the right man for the job! And all my previous doubts and concerns are now a memory forgotten. NACHTGARM, welcome to the horde!
Nachtgarm: To me, Dark Funeral is the epitome of Black Metal. To be a member of this institution now, is not only a big honor for me, but is also complementing my work as a lead singer as well as my action at the front of the stage throughout the years. Consequently, I am very glad that Dark Funeral put their unholy faith in me and my abilities. As the successor of Emperor Magus Caligula I am quite aware of the high expectations being directed to my person. However, I can assure every one of you out there, that with every breath I take I will live up to these expectations. Hands down. This is the arrival of Satan’s Empire. Now let us set this world aflame!
But that’s not all, DARK FUNERAL are also proud to announce to board 70000TONS OF METAL, The World’s Biggest Floating Heavy Metal Festival that will sail Monday, January 23, 2012 aboard the Royal Caribbean “Majesty of the Seas” from Miami, FL to George Town, Cayman Islands and will not return you to the real world for four days until Friday, January 27, 2012.

Can you imagine that? A whole luxury cruise ship full of metalheads? You can enjoy tons of onboard live shows on several in and outdoor stages from early in the morning until late at night, open-mic nights, Heavy Metal karaoke with members of the bands, bars that never close, again: bars that never close…, a fun-and-sun-filled day on the beautiful island of Grand Cayman and since there is no backstage area you will have the opportunity to mingle side-by-side with the artists in this incredibly fan-friendly scenario that has no comparison. In an official message from DARK FUNERAL guitarist Lord Ahriman: “Ave! The dawn of a new dark era has risen, and a new hellish chapter has begun. Despite the circumstances, I must say that the band and I are extremely motivated and excited to start a new chapter in the saga that is DARK FUNERAL. We already have some killer plans for the future. And all I can say at this point is that we’ll be moving forward with full force and without mercy.
Those of you who’ve followed DARK FUNERAL since the beginning in 1993, surely know that this is not the first time we’ve undergone a major lineup change. And whatever some people may have thought or whined about, no one can deny the fact that I/we’ve always succeeded in recruiting new and amazing musicians to move forward and reach new heights with the band. There is absolutely no doubt in our mind that this will again be the case.
On August 21st we performed our last show with Emperor Magus Caligula at the Summer Breeze Festival in Germany. Since this was a very special performance in many ways, we not only put on our biggest pyro show ever, we also captured this gig with 10 cameras (including one crane). So you can be sure to expect a DVD release from this killer show in the near future. More info regarding the DVD will come in due time…
Since parting ways with E.M. Caligula, it come as no surprise to the rest of us, that B-Force would follow the same path and throw in his towel too. So I wish to thank him for the six fantastic years he’d been with us on bass. It’s been a pleasure indeed working together.
Said B-Force of his decision to leave the band: ‘After six awesome and crazy years with DARK FUNERAL, I have decided to leave the band. It’s my own decision to leave one of the best bands/friends in the world, but I feel that I need to move forward in life and do something else music-wise. There are absolutely NO hard feelings between DARK FUNERAL and myself. We are and will continue to be good friends! I want to thank the band and all the fans all over the world. You kick ass everywhere I’ve been playing with the band. I thank you all. May the dark forces be with you.’
We have already found a new and totally amazing bassist; a bassist who lives and breathes DARK FUNERAL in its purest form. And we couldn’t be more honored to have him onboard. We will however wait until everything is settled before we present him to all of you, so please be patient.
Since announcing the departure of Caligula, we’ve been overwhelmed with vocal applicants. Among them are a couple of very strong candidates. However, since we feel no hurry to fill the position, we’ll continue the search to make sure that when we eventually hire someone, it be someone who totally blows away everything in his path.
If you do believe that you have what it takes for the job, we are still accepting vocal applications. Send us a brief introduction and some AUDIO/VIDEO files/links of your vocal performance to: email@example.com.
From now until we have found and installed a new vocalist, we will keep ourselves busy rehearsing and working on material for a new full-length. Rest assured that as soon as the new lineup is complete, we’ll continue to tour the world in usual DARK FUNERAL manner. More news to come… — Lord Ahriman and DARK FUNERAL”

In an official statement from Emperor Magus Caligula, longtime vocalist of Swedish black metal battalion DARK FUNERAL: “I would like to inform all of our fans that on Saturday, August 21, at the Summer Breeze festival in Germany, I will be doing my last show with the band. Naturally I have mixed feelings about this decision, but it is final! They say that every person will have about 15 minutes of fame during their life. Well, I have had a hell-of-a-ride for 15 years now together with Lord Ahriman and DARK FUNERAL. As some people love to spread weird rumors about others, let me make this clear once and for all. I have not committed suicide, I have not taken an overdose, nor are there any personal issues between me and DARK FUNERAL.
However, my life has taken a new turn lately, and I am also getting married this year, thus my priorities in life lie somewhere else.I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our fans for their amazing support during all the 15 years I’ve been with the band. And I would also like to thank my brothers in DARK FUNERAL for all these years together. Lord Ahriman and I have managed to raise DARK FUNERAL from the deepest abyss, when we have confronted problems before. And there is no doubt in my mind, that DARK FUNERAL, without me, will raise once more, stronger than ever…
Thus I have spoken, thus shalt it be…… — Horns up, Masse Broberg A.K.A Emperor Magus Caligula” Added guitarist Lord Ahriman: “Ave everyone! Caligula and I have shared some 15 kick ass years together and I would naturally like to thank my brother for the amazing work he has done for DARK FUNERAL over all these years. It’s been a pleasure indeed working together. You will be missed deeply! But as with everything else, I understand when people change course and get new priorities in life. And I fully respect that. Life moves on after all, and so will DARK FUNERAL. In the meantime, and while we’re searching for a new vocalist, the most logical thing for us to do, is obviously enter writing mood. And that’s exactly what we’ll be doing. From now on and until we have found and installed a new killer vocalist, we begin to work on a new full-length. However, you can rest assured that as soon as we have found a new vocalist, we’ll set full force, and continue to tour the world in usual DARK FUNERAL manner.
THIS STATEMENT ALSO SERVES AS AN OFFICIAL LAUNCH FOR A NEW VOCALIST!
Naturally, our demands on a new vocalist will be very high, but I/we are fully confident that there are some amazing vocalists out there that would fit us like a hand in glove. So if you do believe that you have what it takes to blow us away with your vocal skills, and to replace Caligula, don’t hesitate to send us some AUDIO/DVD files of your vocal performance! Send to: firstname.lastname@example.org. Since the show at the Summer Breeze Festivalwill be the very last show we will do with Caligula behind the mic, you can be sure that we’ll prepare a very special pyro show. See you there!

I’m sure Dark Funeral needs no introduction. The Swedish black metallers finally came to the UK two years after their last album ATTERA TOTUS SANCTUS was released to general acclaim. I interviewed founding member, guitarist and inspiration Lord Ahriman, who was pretty stressed out when I met him for the interview, due to an early start in the day and some problems with merchandise. He was pretty reserved, distant and although answered my questions with great politeness and courtesy, it always felt as if he didn’t want to be there.
