Interview With Marta Gabriel of Crystal Viper

Conducted by Erich Heintzelman

I caught up with Marta Gabriel not long after the release of Crystal Viper’s newest album POSSESSION, a concept album about… you guessed it possession.  The topic is very dark,  and unashamedly metal much like the band and the lady herself, who takes recognizable pride in the her approach to traditional metal.  Marta discussed the new album, the band’s touring plans, and who her dream collaboration would include.

CRYSTAL VIPER’s MARTA GABRIEL To Play Rhythm Guitar For JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR

August 3rd, 2012
CRYSTAL VIPER's MARTA GABRIEL

CRYSTAL VIPER’s MARTA GABRIEL

JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR — the U.S. power metal act led by former VIRGIN STEELE guitarist Jack Starr — has recruited Marta Gabriel (CRYSTAL VIPER) to play rhythm guitar for the band at the Keep It True festival and all other European live shows that will be scheduled for 2013.

According to a press release, “Jack Starr was quite impressed with the rock-solid playing of Marta Gabriel and asked her if she would be available to do some shows with BURNING STARR as the recorded music of BURNING STARR usually features more than one guitar part.”

JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR’s “Land Of The Dead” video can be seen below. The song is the title track of the band’s latest studio album, which was released on November 11, 2011 via Limb Music. The CD was produced by Bart Gabriel (CRYSTAL VIPER, SACRED STEEL, LONEWOLF), and features cover artwork by Ken Kelly (RAINBOW, KISS, MANOWAR).

“Land Of The Dead” was recorded by the same lineup that was responsible for 2009’s “Defiance” album: Starr on guitar, Ned Meloni on bass, Kenny “Rhino” Earl (ex-MANOWAR) on drums, and Todd Hall on vocals. The CD also features guest appearances by David Shankle and Ross The Boss (both ex-MANOWAR) on lead guitar, and Marta Gabriel (CRYSTAL VIPER) on grand piano and keyboards.

JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR album from 1986, “No Turning Back!”, was reissued on July 25 via Skol Records. This was the first official CD re-release of this LP since 1998. The remastered reissue includes new artwork (painted by the famous Polish artist Tomasz Oracz) and contains two bonus tracks and thick booklet with all lyrics and many previously unseen photos. The CD will be limited to only 1000 copies.

CRYSTAL VIPER: Polish Traditional Metal Act To Release New Album

April 15th, 2012
CRYSTAL VIPER - Crimen Excepta

CRYSTAL VIPER - Crimen Excepta

One of Poland’s top contemporary traditional metal acts, CRYSTAL VIPER, are prepared to release Crimen Excepta on April 24th via AFM Records, their fourth full-length album to date.

Welcome to the world of CRYSTAL VIPER: a world full of Flying Vs, tube amps, leather and chains. The band’s powerful old-school sound runs deep with influences hailing from Mercyful Fate, Warlock and Iron Maiden, yet with a dark thrash edge born of Nifelheim persuasion at times, all fueled by frontwoman Marta Gabriel, her commanding vocals akin to Chastain’s Leather Leone with a touch of Doro Pesch.

The follow-up to 2010’s acclaimed Legends full-length, Crimen Excepta is a concept album about holy inquisition, black magic and witches, where fiction mixes with historical facts. Recorded with producer Bart Gabriel (Jack Starr’s Burning Starr, Sacred Steel, Mortician), Crimen Excepta is inarguably CRYSTAL VIPER‘s darkest and most aggressive material to date. Bringing more of their personal black and death metal influences to the table, even bringing in guest members such as Hell vocalist David Bower who appears on the album’s title track, as well as Vader’s Piotr “Peter” Wiwczarek to record a cover of the Vader classic “Tyrants Of Hell” for a bonus track to the album. Additionally, CRYSTAL VIPER recorded “Ghosts Of Sherwood” — a theme song for the forthcoming 3D cinema horror movie Robin Hood: Ghosts Of Sherwood — which also appears as a bonus track to the album.

As with previous CRYSTAL VIPER works, the cover art for Crimen Excepta was painted by legendary French artist Chris Moyen, known from his cooperation with acts such as Slayer, Trivium, Beherit, Blasphemy and more. View the cover art, a trailer for the new album to hear the opening track from the album, “Witch’s Mark,” AT THIS LOCATION.

CRYSTAL VIPER: guest appearances on the new album “Crimen Excepta”

February 29th, 2012

CRYSTAL VIPER will release their new album titled “Crimen Excepta” on April 27 (in Europe) and April 24 (in United States). The concept effort about holy inquisition, black magic and witches, where fiction is mixed with historical facts, has been produced by Bart Gabriel (SACRED STEEL, JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR) and recorded with sound engineer Mariusz Pietka (MORTICIAN, LONEWOLF), is the heaviest and most dark album CRYSTAL VIPER ever did. There will be two special guests on “Crimen Excepta”: David Bower, vocalist of HELL appear in the title track, while VADER mainman Peter will be heard in the cover version of the classic VADER song “Tyrani Piekiel”, which will be available as the bonus track on the first, limited edition of the album. So most probably CRYSTAL VIPER is the first ever Heavy Metal band, which re-arranged and recorded Death Metal cover song. “We already announced that fans should expect the unexpected. The new album is different than everything CRYSTAL VIPER did in the past. Of course it’s still traditional  Metal, and it’s still CRYSTAL VIPER – but this time, everything was different, starting from the compositions, through our attitude and inspirations, up to equipment we used and the recording session itself” says CRYSTAL VIPER frontwoman Marta Gabriel. “It was amazing to have Peter in the studio, we all are huge fans of VADER, and I think he was also amazed when he heard how our voices sound together in this Heavy Metal version of “Tyrani Piekiel”. And when you will hear the lines of William The Judge recorded by David of HELL, you will have jaw on the floor. We had.” she adds.
