STONE
The Circus, Helsinki
8′TH of March 2013
Review and photos by Marko Syrjala
The legendary Finnish thrash/speed band Stone was originally formed in mid 80’s. The band released four studio albums and one live album, before disbanding in 1992 to pursue different musical directions. In year 2000 band reunited briefly and in 2008 they did five shows including appearances at the Ruisrock and Tuska festivals. Last autumn, the band announced, somewhat surprisingly, that it intends to make a small-scale tour in the spring of 2013. It seems that at present there is a huge demand for the band. Five sold out shows and over 5000 tickets sold is an impressive achievement for any band in Finland. Official reason given for this comeback was the release of new Stone box set, but yes, perhaps the band just decided to respond the audience’s call and gave them what they wanted. Please welcome one more time: Janne Joutsenniemi, Roope Latvala, Markku “Nirri” Niiranen and Pekka Kasari, GET STONED!!

Guitarist / vocalist Alexi Laiho & keyboard player Janne Warman of the world renowned Finnish heavy metal band CHILDREN OF BODOM (aka COB) have issued a second studio update from the bowels of Danger Johnny Studios in Helsinki, where the band began work on their as-yet-untitled eighth studio release last month.
Recording engineer Mikko Karmila (who worked on the Hatebreeder, Follow the Reaper, and Hate Crew Deathroll albums) is lending his talents to the new studio effort in addition to producer Peter Tägtgren (Immortal, Marduk, Amon Amarth), who oversaw production for vocals & keyboards earlier this month. The album will be mixed at Finnvox Studios and a summer street date via Nuclear Blast Records is expected.
Working song titles include: “All Twisted,” “Slowdance On Nails,” “Moto GP,” “FC Pettymys,” “Kananmuisti-ilmiö”[Chicken Memory Effect], and “Trondheim.”
For the uninitiated: Over the last twenty years, Finland’s CHILDREN OF BODOM have incorporated many different musical styles into their celebrated sound, leading critics and fans to label them as melodic death metal, power metal, thrash metal, symphonic black metal, and neoclassical metal. Their enthralling mix of melodic hooks and instrumental acrobatics have solidified the band as one of the leading voices of music’s new generation. Formed as Inearthed in 1993, the group is led by superstar frontman / guitarist Alexi ‘Wildchild’ Laiho, who was voted “Best Metal Guitarist” by readers of Guitar World magazine. COB albums are no strangers to debut positions on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 chart and with three consecutive albums debuting at number one on Finnish album charts, they are one of their home country’s bestselling artists of all time with more than 250,000 records sold there alone. Their latest studio album, Relentless Reckless Forever, was released in 2011.
CHILDREN OF BODOM are: Alexi Laiho (guitar, vocals); Roope Latvala (guitar); Jaska Raatikainen (drums); Henkka Seppälä (bass); and Janne Warman (keyboards).

Heavy T.O.
July 23-24, 2011
Review and pics by Monika Deviat
On July 23rd and 24th, 10 000 metalheads descended upon Downsview Park in Toronto ON for Heavy T.O. The two day festival took place the same weekend as Heavy MTL. This was the third year for Heavy MTL and its success from right from the first year prompted MTL organizers Daniel Glick and Nick Farkas to team up with Live Nation to create Heavy T.O. Two stages had bands playing right after each other, about 11 per day. Heavy T.O. sponsor, Jägermeister had a tent area set up with games and were hosting some of the autograph sessions. Certain bands like Megadeth and Slayer had line-ups of over a hundred people waiting to get signatures from their favorite musicians.

The Ugly World Tour 2011 / Academy, Manchester UK / April 2nd 2011 / Photo: Amelie Lund
In late June I had the chance and very great pleasure to sit down with Jaska Raatikainen drummer for Children Of Bodom. We met backstage just before the COB hit the stage in Calgary, Alberta on the 6th date of their North American tour. It is very rare for the soft-spoken drummer to grant interviews so we are very pleased to present you this discussion.

Children of Bodom - "Relentless Reckless Forever"
Children of Bodom has recently released their seventh studio album “Relentless Reckless Forever” (Spinefarm Records,2011) and are touring in support of the album. They are currently on the North American leg of “The Ugly World Tour 2011”. Metal-Rules caught up with keyboardist Janne Wirman for an interview after Children of Bodom’s set in Calgary, Alta. at MacEwan Hall on June 30th, 2011.
When talking about touring in North-America Wirman said that “We really love Canada. And talking about statistics, Canada has become our second biggest market after Finland. It used to be Japan, but now it’s Canada.”
During the interview Janne Wirman also talked about fans, touring and what he likes to do in his free time.
You seem to keep a very good rapport with your fans and you get out to meet the fans. Do you have an interesting or crazy story about an encounter with a fan you could share?
There would be so many. Whenever I get put on the spot I can’t think of one. There’s a lot of weird stuff that goes on. I really don’t like the situation where a fan asks you sign their arm or something and then tell you they are going to tattoo it. One time I was drunk out of my mind in Germany and was like, “Fuck no, you’re not going to tattoo that” and just put an ‘x’ through the signature and he tattooed it anyway. So that’s not good.
The band has a reputation as being big on partying. Do you guys limit yourselves on how much you party before a show?
Totally. We do not drink before the show. Maybe a maximum of two beers before the show. I mean I drink a lot during as you may have noticed, but we do not drink before the show.

Tonights gig is a big’un! Two top draw bands at the top of their game; in my humble opinion, and a band that I’ve heard of, but never had the pleasure. What a pleasure tonight was though!

Children of Bodom - "Relentless Reckless Forever"
HD TRAILER FOR BAND’s NEW MUSIC VIDEO “WAS IT WORTH IT?” NOW AVAILABLE
CHILDREN OF BODOM (also COB), the hard partying Finnish Heavy Metal band that features frontman and modern day guitar hero Alexi Laiho will release its new album Relentless Reckless Forever on March 8, 2011 via Universal Music. Today, COB reveals the album’s cover art, which can be viewed now at this location.
Recorded in Finland’s Petrax Studios with famed rock producer Matt Hyde (Slayer, Monster Magnet), Relentless Reckless Forever is the seventh studio album of CHILDREN OF BODOM’s illustrious career and the first new record from the band since 2008′s Blooddrunk, which debuted at #22 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart and scored the quintet its third consecutive #1 debut in Finland. On Relentless Reckless Forever, COB’s high-energy hooks and electric energy forge stadium-sized heavy metal anthems that seethe with both marvelous musicianship and a phenomenal pop prowess. The quintet’s unique union of haunting melodies, rhythmic sensibility, guitar-and-keyboard interplay and king-size solos is supercharged to the maximum, and the resulting record is poised to push the band – already on the brink of breakout success in the U.S. – to an altogether new pinnacle.
“We worked super hard on this album, at least for me it was pretty much no sleep or rest for six weeks,” stated Laiho. “But we were determined to make the best COB album ever, so we were willing to do whatever it took. Of course, having our producer Matt Hyde kicking our asses 24/7 definitely made the results even better, so obviously we’re more than anxious to get this album out there”
The first single and video from Relentless Reckless Forever is “Was it Worth It?”. COB shot a high energy music video for the track, joining forces with two-time X Games gold medalist and two-time Thrasher Magazine “Skater of the Year” Chris Cole as well as noted pro skaters Jamie Thomas, Garrett Hill and Tom Asta (the current #1 Amateur skateboarder in the world). Filmed on location at central Pennsylvania’s residential Action Sports compound Camp Woodward and directed by Dale Resteghini for Raging Nation Films (Pink Floyd, Santana, Mötley Crüe), the video was shot guerrilla style, sans treatment; honing in directly on CHILDREN OF BODOM’s high-spirited fire and the skaters’ eye-opening execution. A high resolution trailer for the clip can be viewed now at www.relentlessrecklessforever.com.
The track listing for CHILDREN OF BODOM’s Relentless Reckless Forever is as follows:
1.) Not My Funeral
2.) Shovel Knockout
3.) Roundtrip to Hell and Back
4.) Pussyfoot Miss Suicide
5.) Relentless Reckless Forever
6.) Ugly
7.) Cry of the Nihilist
8.) Was It Worth It?
9.) Northpole Throwdown
10.) Party All the Time (* Eddie Murphy)
“The single ‘Was It Worth It?’ is a total party song, said Laiho. “It’s not your typical Bodom sound, but it’s one of my favorites and heavy as hell.”
In addition to Laiho, CHILDREN OF BODOM features Roope Latvala (guitar), Jaska Raatikainen (drums), Henkka Seppälä (bass) and Janne Warman (keyboards).
About CHILDREN OF BODOM:
CHILDREN OF BODOM’s enthralling mix of modern heavy metal, melodic hooks and the guitar acrobatics of Laiho have solidified the critically acclaimed Finnish band as one of the most revered hard rock acts in the world and one of the leading voices of metal’s new generation. The group’s 2008 studio album Blooddrunk skyrocketed to #22 on Billboard’s Top 200, scored the quintet its third consecutive #1 debut in its native Finland and saw Laiho named “Best Metal Guitarist” by the readers of Guitar World, besting well known players such as Kirk Hammett of Metallica to win the coveted award. CHILDREN OF BODOM has been called “technically dazzling” by the New York Times and “One of the most talented metal bands of our time” by contemporary media conglomerate VICE. COB’s popular song “If You Want Peace…Prepare for War” is currently featured in the smash hit music video game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. The band’s name is derived from the infamous Lake Bodom murders, which took place in Finland in 1960.
Updated CHILDREN OF BODOM news and tour information will be made available via COB online: www.cobhc.com / www.myspace.com/childrenofbodom / www.facebook.com/childrenofbodom / www.twitter.com/cobhc
