MAX CAVALERA – Sepultura  Soulfly  Cavalera Conspiracy

full_CavCon_3534b_LR.jpg

Max Cavalera needs no introduction. He’s after all one of the founding members, together with his younger brother Iggor Cavalera, of Sepultura. After leaving Sepultura in the mid 90′s, he formed Soulfly and a few years ago reunited with Iggor Cavalera, forming a new band: Cavalera Conspiracy. On the 10th of June, Cavalera Conspiracy started their European tour here in Tampere during the Sauna Open Air festival, promoting their latest record Blunt Force Trauma, which has been getting a lot praise from media and fans. Just a few hours before Max went on stage with Cavalera Conspiracy, he was kind enough to talk about the new tour, some plans for Cavalera Conspiracy and Soulfly, Brazil, Finland and other things.

Sauna Open Air festival 2011, Tampere, Finland (June 9-11)

June 12th, 2011

Sauna Open Air Festival 2011, 9th-11th June Tampere, Finland

Review by Luxi Lahtinen, live pictures by Luxi Lahtinen & Terhi Pihlaja

The 8th Sauna Open Air festival was celebrated in a very sunny and warm weather, unlike in some other years – and this year the festival also broke their own record, welcoming as many as 26,000 people within the three days.

The SOA festival has truly found an important place among the other Finnish summer festivals, concentrating mostly on old-school Heavy/Thrash Metal and Hard Rock bands – and turning the festival around for the past 3-4 years or so, by booking many internationally big names for the three-day Metal feasts; from Kiss to Megadeth to Dio to Whitesnake to Scorpions to Type O Negatíve – and the list goes on.

This year, the festival organizers had very special grins – wider than ever before, spread all over their faces – and for some very good reasons. Two of the biggest headliners, Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest, arrived at SOA for the first time, with bands like Saxon, Accept, Doro, Cavalera Conspiracy, Joey Belladonna and many others proving to be good company to them.

Read on – the following article is based on the seven most interesting and musically satisfying bands of this year’s festival from your truly point of view.

"Blunt Force Trauma" - Cavalera Conspiracy

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY — the project featuring former SEPULTURA members Max (guitar, vocals) and Igor Cavalera (drums) — will release its sophomore album, “Blunt Force Trauma”, on March 29 via Roadrunner Records. The entire CD is now available for streaming for a limited time at RoadrunnerRecords.de.

“Blunt Force Trauma” was once again tracked with ex-MACHINE HEAD/SOULFLY guitarist Logan Mader, who co-produced the LP with Max. Logan also mixed the follow-up to the band’s debut album, “Inflikted”, which has sold less than 50,000 copies in the United States since its March 2008 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The brothers Cavalera co-founded SEPULTURA, the Brazilian metal band that redefined and established the genre outside of the U.S. and Europe. After Max exited the band, there was a rift between himself and his brother, one that was eventually repaired through the redemptive power of music. Some time had passed and Max and Igor were unable to resist the musical pull in their magnetic fields and their musical collaboration was renewed. The duo are back for round two with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY.

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY’s lineup is filled out by guitarist Marc Rizzo, who plays with Max in SOULFLY, and bassist Johnny Chow.

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY: Studio Footage Posted Online

A new webisode featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the making of “Blunt Force Trauma”, the sophomore album from CAVALERA CONSPIRACY — the project featuring former SEPULTURA members Max (guitar, vocals) and Igor Cavalera (drums) — can be viewed below.

“Blunt Force Trauma” will be released on March 29 via Roadrunner Records. The CD was once again tracked with Logan Mader (ex-MACHINE HEAD/SOULFLY guitarist), who co-produced the LP with Max. Logan also mixed the follow-up to the band’s debut album, “Inflikted”, which has sold 43,000 copies in the United States since its March 2008 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The brothers Cavalera co-founded SEPULTURA, the Brazilian metal band that redefined and established the genre outside of the U.S. and Europe. After Max exited the band, there was a rift between himself and his brother, one that was eventually repaired through the redemptive power of music. An audio recording of CAVALERA CONSPIRACY performing a brand new song, “Warlord”, during the band’s October 11, 2010 appearance at the SWU Music and Arts Festival at the Maeda Farm in Itú (about 43.5 miles away from São Paulo), Brazil can be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

In an interview with Triple J’s “The Racket”, Max Cavalera stated about the sophomore album from CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, “We recorded 15 songs, 13 being originals for the album, and then we did a BLACK SABBATH cover, ‘Electric Funeral’, that’s gonna come out on a Metal Hammer compilation in Europe. And we did a BLACK FLAG cover, a song called ‘Six Pack’. We also had a collaboration with Roger [Miret] from AGNOSTIC FRONT — he sings on a song called ‘Lynch Mob’ that we did together in the studio in L.A.; he flew to L.A. to do this collaboration. I was really proud because, to me, Roger is like the godfather of New York hardcore; AGNOSTIC FRONT is one of the pioneer bands of the whole New York hardcore scene, so it was like recording with a legend of hardcore. The CAVALERA album is really intense; that’s all I can say about it. It makes the first album sound like pop music.”

Regarding the songwriting and recording process for the new CAVALERA CONSPIRACY album, Max said, “I wrote a lot of the stuff and I sent it to Brazil to [Igor] in the form of a CD — like four tracks of the riffs — so that he would be familiarized with the songs by the time I got to the studio. And then I brought another CD with me, which was, like, newer songs I had just got done [writing] for the album. And everything else we did in the studio together — me and him there on the spot. I told him the idea of making a very intense album with some songs being only a minute and a half, so it’s a cross [between] MINOR THREAT and SLAYER and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY. So the idea was really cool — Igor really liked that — and from that point on, the album just grew and song after song, every day a new song came in. And I’m really happy with it. I think people are gonna be blown away when they hear it. I think it’s a pretty cool album.”

Cavalera Conspiracy – 2nd ALBUM REUNITES BROTHERS AND SEPULTURA PRINCIPAL MEMBERS MAX AND IGGOR CAVALERA

November 16th, 2010

Cavalera Conspiracy

Cavalera Conspiracy

ALBUM SLATED FOR RELEASE IN MARCH 2011

New York, NY: Cavalera Conspiracy announced today the title of their second album, Blunt Force Trauma. The band released Inflikted in 2008 to much critical and fan acclaim. The album was a momentous occasion in the heavy metal universe, as it reunited brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera for the first time since Max left Sepultura in 1996.

The Brothers Cavalera co-founded Sepultura, the Brazilian metal band that redefined and established the genre outside of the US and Europe. After Max exited the band, there was a rift between himself and his brother, one that was eventually repaired through the redemptive power of music. Some time had passed and Max and Iggor were unable to resist the musical pull in their magnetic fields and their musical collaboration was renewed. The duo are back for round two with Cavalera Conspiracy.

Cavalera Conspiracy’s lineup is filled out by guitarist Marc Rizzo, who plays with Max in Soulfly, and bassist Johnny Chow.

Blunt Force Trauma is due out in March via Roadrunner Records. The track listing is below:

1. Warlord
2. Torture
3. Lynch Mob
4. Killing Inside
5. Thrasher
6. I Speak Hate
7 . Target
8. Genghis Khan
9. Burn Waco
10. Rasputin
11. Blunt Force Trauma

Cavalera Conspiracy appeared on the cover of Metal Edge in an homage to The Blues Brothers, and the album was one of the most spun platters on Sirius’ Liquid Metal/Hard Attack channel that year. Inflikted was described as “gobsmackingly violent” and Outburn mused, “If only all family reunions could be this awesome!”

Below is a further sampling of what the press had to say about Cavalera Conspiracy and Inflikted:

“The brothers who formed Sepultura, putting Brazil on the global metal map in the process, have reunited-personally and professionally-after more than a decade of acrimony, and their new album is a ferocious homecoming indeed.” –Revolver, May 2008

“The fruit of their labor, Inflikted, is an explosive flashback to the remorseless thrash and primal groove-metal Sepultura created with 1991′s Arise and 1993′s Chaos A.D. Although the songs were arranged and recorded quickly, Inflikted sounds neither hastily executed nor incomplete. There’s an almost telekinetic connection between Max’s riffing and Iggor’s drumming-the kind of chemistry that comes only from musicians who learned to play together and honed their craft through years of studio sessions and live shows.” –Artist Direct

“From straightforward pummeling death metal to more complex and technical songs, Cavalera Conspiracy hits on all cylinders.” –About.com

“For metalheads far and wide, it’s nice knowing the Cavaleras are tight again and sounding perhaps better than ever on Inflikted.” –MTV News, April 2008

Inflikted combines the best elements of Soulfly and Sepultura. There’s lots of tribal drum beats, and the guitars are fast ‘n thrashy.” –Hit Parader, March/April 2008

“The band mixes the old with the new to create something fresh.” –My City Buzz.com

“Cavalera Conspiracy is not a mercy project, nor is it about cashing in. It’s about bringing the metal back.” –Ink

“No doubt this will be remembered as one of the most important heavy music releases of 2008, and quite possibly ever.” –ARTIST direct

“Given Inflikted’s overall high standards, the Cavalera Conspiracy may be around for a while.” –All Music
