Damnation Festival 2013

November 18th, 2013

Damnation Festival

@ Leeds University, Leeds

2nd November 2013

Review by Caitlin Smith

Photography by Michelle Murphy

Calling all the sinners and heretics, the gathering of the damned with once again take place in the unholy city of, well, Leeds. Perhaps the settings may not be dark, dank pits of hell, but the bands certainly make up for this. Damnation festival has returned bigger and better than ever this year, with an additional forth stage and hallways chock full of denim cutoffs and weathered leather jackets on men and women alike. As some things change though, others stay the same. CARCASS made their Damnation debut in 2008, and judging by the packed halls, this was a more than welcome booking.

Kirk Hammett of METALLICA recently spoke to Nikki Blakk from 107.7 the Bone about his upcoming horror convention and announced that CARCASS will be performing at the event. Listen to the entire interview here: http://youtu.be/GKhWL1VDRG4

“When we heard that Kirk Hammett was opening a carny fair in the Bay Area we knew we wanted in! We’re quite honored that we’ve invited to appear in the ‘freak show’ booth,” stated CARCASS frontman Jeff Walker in his typical self-deprecating sarcastic fashion. “Joking aside we’re looking forward to the Fear FestEvil, will be a nice ‘little’ warm up for our US Tour next year. See you there!”

On February 6th through 8th, 2014 at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, lifelong horror enthusiast and METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett will launch his first annual horror convention, dubbed Kirk Von Hammett’s Fear FestEviL.

CARCASS Crack the Billboard Top 100 Chart

September 25th, 2013
CARCASS: North American Tour Dates Announced

CARCASS: North American Tour Dates Announced

Disinterred British extreme metal legends CARCASS scanned 8,422 copies of Surgical Steel in its first week of sales in the United States according to Nielson Soundscan. The record came in at #41 on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart, making it their highest first week sales ever and their highest charting release to date! In contrast, their last full-length release 1996’s Swansong sold just under 2,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release.

Commented the band:
“Wow! Well we had every faith in the fact that we’ve recorded a very strong album and we had every faith in our label Nuclear Blast that they would work their asses off – but this is AMAZING news!!! This even more impressive when you consider that our album leaked a month before

the release date AND that we didn’t target the charts in the Summer when it was ‘soft’ and easier to chart high. CARCASS was up against some strong mainstream releases this past week! Thanks to all the listeners who bought the album- it goes to prove to all the cynics out there wrong – people DO still buy albums -especially Metalheads! If you bought the album you should be proud of yourselves! Again thanks from us!”

CARCASS: Band Discusses “Surgical Steel” Artwork

September 19th, 2013
CARCASS: North American Tour Dates Announced

CARCASS: North American Tour Dates Announced

Disinterred British extreme metal legends CARCASS released ‘Surgical Steel’, their first studio album since their 1996 LP Swansong, this week! In celebration we sat Bill and Dan in front of a camera to ask them about the artwork for the new album, which you can watch here: http://youtu.be/qJ4Bh1spuu0

The long-awaited sixth full-length album by CARCASS, is available on several collectible formats and can now be ordered with or without an exclusive t-shirt design here http://smarturl.it/SurgicalSteelCD.

Surgical Steel was produced by Colin Richardson (NAPALM DEATH, BOLT THROWERGOREFESTCANNIBALCORPSESINISTER, RODRIGO Y GABRIELA) and mixed/mastered by Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, ACCEPT, EXODUS, TESTAMENT). “We went back to working with Ian Tilton, who is an iconic English photographer famous for working with THE STONE ROSES,” stated frontman Jeff Walker regarding the cover artwork. “He actually did the front cover for Necroticism… as well. We’ve deliberately tried to evoke the feeling of that album and Heartwork.” Joining guitarist Bill Steer and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker in the band’s current incarnation are new drummer Dan Wilding (ABORTED, TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED) and guitarist Ben Ash (PIG IRON, DESOLATION, LIQUEFIED SKELETON). Expect some guest vocals from original sticksman Ken Owen as well, when Surgical Steel is finally released this Fall. Read the rest of this entry »

CARCASS – Interview with Bill Steer

September 8th, 2013

CARCASS

Interview with guitarist Bill Steer

By Peter Atkinson

Promo photos from Official Carcass Facebook page
Live photos by Peter Atkinson

With the mid-September release of their brilliant comeback album Surgical Steel, the return of English extremists Carcass that began in earnest with a spate of reunion shows in 2007 is now complete. And 17 years after the band went out with a whimper, issuing the toothless Swansong in 1996 after they’d effectively already split following several years of label and internal turmoil, they are indeed back with a vengeance.

Surgical Steel manages to at once capture the surging riffs and sinister wit of Necroticism and the crunching melodies and robust production of Heartwork; pay occasional homage to the gnashing vitriol of Reek of Putrefaction and Symphonies Of Sickness; and bring the catchiness of Swansong into the mix, though with decidedly more oomph, all while making it sound fresh, new and vital. This is certainly no mere trip down memory lane, Surgical Steel raises the bar for modern metal the way Reek and Symphonies set the mark for gore-grind back in the day and Heartwork paved the way for melodic death metal.

Oddly, founding guitarist Bill Steer (ex-also of Napalm Death) and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker essentially removed themselves from the metal scene altogether after Carcass split, despite having spawned numerous sound-alikes who can still be heard to this day. Steer formed the blues rock band Firebird. Walker recorded an album of tongue-in-cheek country covers – though he did join with Latin narco-grinders Brujeria in 2006. But they obviously never lost the “Carcass spirit,” if you will, and when the time finally came to give a go at crafting new material, they went at it with abandon.

Having walked away from the Carcass reunion in 2010 to focus on Arch Enemy, on again/off again guitarist Michael Amott played no part in Surgical Steel, nor did Arch Enemy’s Daniel Erlandsson, who’d been playing drums. Founding drummer Ken Owen was physically unable to perform, the result of a near-fatal cerebral hemorrhage he suffered in 1999. He did, however, contribute backing vocals on the new album and has lent his full support to Carcass’ reanimation.

But with two new members on board – guitarist Ben Ash, who did not play on the album, and drummer Dan Wilding, who did – the band haven’t missed a beat. Indeed, they’ve got a lot of the life back in them – and then some – that was sucked out during the rather trying final few years of the first go-round.

Via Skype, a chatty Bill Steer offered the following on the life, death and rebirth of one of metal’s most groundbreaking, yet misunderstood bands.

CARCASS: ‘HEARTWORK’ FULL DYNAMIC RANGE EDITION OUT NOW

July 22nd, 2013
CARCASS: 'HEARTWORK'

CARCASS: ‘HEARTWORK’

HEARTWORK, the classic album from British grindcore/death metal legends CARCASS, has been remastered with Full Dynamic Range audio and is available now on limited edition CD and LP.

Originally released in 1993, HEARTWORK was CARCASS’ biggest-selling album, and their first to land in the top 50 of the UK charts.  The album has been specially remastered from the original tapes using Full Dynamic Range (FDR) mastering, allowing the music’s nuances to shine through and giving the whole album a more ferocious, immersive and dynamic sound than ever before.

The typical method of delivery for mastered audio involves using heavy limiting to restrict the dynamic range and increase perceived loudness.  However, this results in unwanted artifacts caused by the process, such as the increased likelihood of distortion.  This led to what is known as “the loudness wars”, with the dynamic range of music being restricted more and more in an effort to make it sound louder.

Full Dynamic Range, on the other hand, delivers music at its optimum sound level dynamically, leaving the listener to decide on the playback level.  This means that the track is not heavily limited to increase perceived loudness – you hear the tracks as they were made and intended to sound, with no loss of quality.

For more information about Full Dynamic Range audio, go to http://www.fdrhd.com

The HEARTWORK Full Dynamic Range edition is available now on CD, including four bonus tracks and a limited edition slipcase sleeve, and is also available on limited edition coloured vinyl LP in the following quantities and colours:

100 – Desensitized White (SOLD OUT)
200 – Right Ventricle Blue (SOLD OUT)
300 – Left Ventricle Red (SOLD OUT)
400 – Perpetual Decay Green
900 – Bleeding Dark Black

Get the HEARTWORK Full Dynamic Range Edition now on CD and LP in Europe at http://bit.ly/16UEqNB or in North America at http://bit.ly/JC3gfM

The HEARTWORK Full Dynamic Range Edition is also available now on iTunes at http://bit.ly/18v7bDP
