W.A.S.P. – Blackie Lawless discusses the REIDOLIZED album

January 15th, 2018

INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

W.A.S.P. is an American heavy metal band formed in 1982 by Blackie Lawless and Randy Piper. W.A.S.P. gained notoriety for their shock rock-themed image, lyrics and energetic live performances. The band’s popularity peaked in that decade. During the era, the band released such classic albums as W.A.S.P, THE LAST COMMAND, and HEADLESS CHILDREN. The band went through many significant changes in the early nineties. Blackie became the only remaining original member of the group. He then decided to start a short-lived career as solo artist and began to work the next album which became THE CRIMSON IDOL. After all, the album was released under name W.A.S.P. The record was a big success on many, and ironically, many critics feel that the concept album has been the best W.A.S.P. output so far. The band toured in 2017 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of THE CRIMSON IDOL. A re-recorded version of the album titled REIDOLIZED, will be released on February 2, 2018. The anniversary tour arrived in Helsinki last September, and then I had the opportunity to sit down with Blackie and discuss the upcoming album and other recent happenings in the WASP world.

BRUCE KULICK – solo artist, Grand Funk Railroad, ex-KISS

December 28th, 2017

BRUCE KULICK

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PHOTOS BY MARKO SYRJALA

Bruce Kulick has had a long and successful career in the music world. He is still, and probably will always be, best known for his twelve-year-long KISS career. Kulick joined the band in 1984, but before that he had been working for many years with artists such as Michael Bolton, Billy Squier, Blackjack and Meat Loaf. When KISS decided to put the makeup back and reunite with the original members in 1996, Kulick founded a  group of his own named Union. Later on, he has released three solo albums and worked as a session artist on numerous projects, including the very successful Avantasia albums. In 1999, he was asked to join the legendary Grand Funk Railroad. And now, 17 years later, he is still with the group. Kulick arrived at Helsinki last November. He was a special guest at KISS Army Finland’s annual KISS Expo. He did not only perform with local KISS Army members and other guests, such as Mr.Lordi and drummer Bobby Rock, but he also did a long Q & A session, meet and greet with fans, and much more. The next day I had the opportunity to sit down with Bruce. We discussed about his recent KISS Kruise performance, Helsinki Expo, a possible new Kulick album and how the future overall looks like for him.

Bobby Rock

BOBBY ROCK

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

Bobby Rock is a Los Angeles based rock/metal drummer. The man first came into awareness with the Vinnie Vincent Invasion which featured, as its name suggests, former KISS guitarist Vinnie Vincent, bassist Dana Strum and vocalist Robert Fleischman who was soon replaced by Mark Slaughter. The band released two albums before disbanding in 1988. Later on, Rock worked on several projects including The Skull, Nitro, and Hardline. He’s also been working many years with the band Nelson and released solo albums, including OUT OF BODY (1996), several instructional DVD’s, books, and has become a recognized health and fitness specialist, with certifications in exercise, nutrition, and meditation. In recent years Rock has also played with the metal band Carnival of Souls, Gary Hoey and Graham Bonnet’s Alcatrazz. In addition to all this, Bobby joined the legendary Lita Ford band last January. The band did a mini-tour in Sweden in late July 2013. At Skogsrojet festival, I was fortunate enough to get the chance to sit down with Bobby and discuss the current Lita Ford thing, his past with Vinnie Vincent and other interesting topics. Read on!

BOB KULICK

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS BY JOUKO VÄÄNÄNEN

Bob Kulick is an American guitarist and Grammy Award-winning record producer. If there was a “fifth member of KISS” award to be handed out, Bob would probably be the front-running recipient. Not only was he in the running to become the original lead guitarist for the band, but he has played as a session musician on ALIVE 2 and KISS KILLERS albums and Paul Stanley’s self-titled solo album. In the late 80’s he was a part of Stanley’s solo band. During the years, Kulick has appeared on several releases by Meat Loaf, as well as session work for Mark Farner, Diana Ross, Lou Reed and W.A.S.P. among others and has produced/played on countless heavy metal tribute albums. We had a pleasure to sit down with the man himself in November 2011 when he appeared as a special guest for his brother Bruce Kulick and John Corabi who did an acoustic performance at the KISS EXPO in Helsinki. The chat lasted almost two hours, so there’s  plenty of material to read, and for that reason this interview has been split in two pieces. Read On!
