ROB HALFORD – My Favorite BLACK SABBATH Album Is…

November 3rd, 2010
Rob Halford

Rob Halford

JUDAS PRIEST singer ROB HALFORD spoke with Steve Newton from Straight.com recently about his upcoming dates opening for BLACK SABBATH singer OZZY OSBOURNE. When asked what his fave Black Sabbath album was, the Metal God chose the band’s scary self-titled debut from 1970.

“It took 24 hours to make,” he says, “believe it or not, but the sound is absolutely mindblowing. If you just listen to the sound, how they were able to do that work in such a short space of time is extraordinary.

“I think a lot of musicians agree that generally your first record is very, very important,” he adds, “because you’re really coming from a very pure, new, uncluttered source. You’ve got nothing to prove because you’ve proved nothing yet; you haven’t really got a massive fanbase, so you’re searching to build that. Your record company’s not interfering with your music as they tend to do when you become successful—same with managers, agents, promoters. You’re really coming into your existence at a different level.

“If you look back at the history of your favourite band, generally the first couple are the ones that really kind of grab you. So that’s why I feel that first Sabbath album for me—much like Sad Wings of Destiny for Judas Priest—is a very important release.”

Halford has performed as the vocalist for Black Sabbath at three shows. He replaced Ronnie James Dio for two nights in November 1992, when Dio elected not to open a show for Ozzy Osbourne. Halford also replaced Osbourne in Black Sabbath on August 25, 2004 (his 53rd birthday) at an Ozzfest show in Camden, New Jersey, since Osbourne could not perform due to bronchitis.

BLACK SABBATH – Seventh Star, The Eternal Idol Deluxe Expanded-Edition Reissues Reviewed

October 27th, 2010
Seventh Star & Eternal Idol Deluxe Editions

Seventh Star & Eternal Idol Deluxe Editions

Sanctuary/Universal Music UK recently confirmed a November 1st release date for the deluxe-edition reissues of the BLACK SABBATH albums Seventh Star, The Eternal Idol, Live At Last and Past Lives.

Black Sabbath News has an extensive article regarding the Seventh Star and The Eternal Idol albums including numerous photos.

Joe Siegler writes: “I cannot recommend these albums highly enough. Eternal Idol a bit more due to the inclusion of the long unreleased Ray Gillen album. But both are worthy purchases. Even if you’ve bought the original releases, the Castle releases, and any other versions.. Go grab these. Support Tony Iommi and validate his decision to release these rare Ray Gillen recordings, and buy these. You can do so by clicking on the cover art above. Also, Amazon UK’s site has samples from all the tracks available for you to check out, too.”

Read more here.

After the departure of Black Sabbath’s third vocalist Ian Gillan following the Born Again album (released in 1983) the band effectively split up and the remaining members embarked upon their own solo ventures. However, pressure from record companies and management would dictate the name Black Sabbath should forge-ahead and even though guitarist Tony Iommi would by now be the sole remaining original member, his unmistakable musicality and signature guitar sound would prove more than sufficient to keep the heart of Black Sabbath alive and beating deep into the 1980s and beyond.

Seventh Star (originally released in 1986) saw Iommi recruiting the skills of Dave “The Beast” Spitz and drummer Eric Singer (later of KISS) and for the first time the position of a keyboardist became a visible credit and long-serving back-room operator Geoff Nicholls was finally brought to the foreground as an official member. However, it would be the position of lead vocalist that would have the greatest impact upon the new Sabbath sound and the appointment of ex-TRAPEZE and DEEP PURPLE bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes set interest and expectations high. Seventh Star would be somewhat of a departure from what was expected from the Black Sabbath name, and the songs on Seventh Star are more blues inclined and in the case of the single release, ‘No Stranger To Love’, an altogether more AOR- and radio-friendly breeze is adopted.

This remastered deluxe expanded edition of the album adds the U.S. remix of the ‘No Stranger To Love’ single and also for the very first time on CD, a live performance from London’s Hammersmith Odeon in June ’86 which features then-unknown American singer Ray Gillen who was brought-in to complete the tour following the departure of Glenn Hughes due to illness.

The Eternal Idol (Black Sabbath’s thirteenth studio album released in 1987) was an altogether harder-sounding record and brought back an ‘edge’ that had been missing from Seventh Star. Although the album was originally recorded with unknown American singer Ray Gillen, by the time it came to the album release Tony Martin had joined the band and subsequently replaced all the vocal work for the final album.

The Eternal Idol remastered deluxe expanded edition adds two single B-sides from ‘The Shining’ – ‘Black Moon’ and ‘Some Kind Of Woman’ ‘ while the second disc brings to CD for the very first time the complete album session originally recorded by the late Ray Gillen.

Although controversial in nature due to being released without permission or sanction by the band at the time, Live At Last (originally released in July 1980), was regardless, a landmark release for Black Sabbath, it being their first proper live album to feature Ozzy Osbourne on vocals (despite the fact that he had parted company with the band two years earlier). Reaching Top 5 in the UK chart, the tracks were recorded on the Vol. 4 tour some seven years prior in 1973 and specifically from shows performed in Manchester and London. From the opening salvo of ‘Tomorrow’s Dream’ through ‘Sweet Leaf’, ‘Killing Yourself To Live’ and ‘Snowblind’, right up to the finale of ‘War Pigs’, the mammoth ‘Wicked World’ (with snippets of ‘Into The Void’ and ‘Supernaut’) and the inevitable closer, ‘Paranoid’, this is the original Black Sabbath lineup in ferocious form – and when it’s this good, there was no-one better!

Captured between 1970 and 1975, the recordings on Past Lives show a band moving along the fast track like a runaway train. Opening disc one, with ‘Tomorrow’s Dream’, this live collection is both bombastic and unrelenting. In some respects, Black Sabbath classics like ‘Sweet Leaf’, ‘Children Of The Grave’, ‘War Pigs’ and ‘Paranoid’ sound even more haunting and powerful on this set because of the transcendent live energy that pervades these songs. Bill Ward has occasionally referred to a “fifth member” joining them on stage, a non-literal suggestion denoting the sheer power and energy of the four Sabs on stage together. Tracks one-five were recorded at the Hard Rock in Manchester on March 11, 1973 while tracks six-nine were recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London on March 16, 1973. Disc two expands the more familiar and available performances on disc one, with further compelling live versions of tracks recorded in Paris at the Olympia Theatre in December 1970 and Asbury Park Convention Hall, New Jersey during August of 1975.

BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, IRON MAIDEN Members Recording New Song For Charity

BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, IRON MAIDEN Members Recording New Song For Charity

BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, IRON MAIDEN Members Recording New Song For Charity

In 1989, BLACK SABBATH’s Tony Iommi and DEEP PURPLE’s Ian Gillan were just a few names in a long list of talent involved in the re-recording of the classic Deep Purple track ‘Smoke On The Water’. This song was re-recorded to raise money for those affected by the Leninakan earthquake that struck Armenia in 1988. In October of last year, both Iommi and Gillan travelled to Armenia to see how the funds raised had helped the local community. On their trip they visited a music school only to find it being run out of temporary accommodation, it was only location not to have been rebuilt 20 years after the earthquake had struck.

Next week Iommi and Gillan will be heading back into the studio, joined by keyboardist Jon Lord (ex-Deep Purple, WHITESNAKE) and drummer Nicko McBrain (IRON MAIDEN) to record a new track to raise money to rebuild the Armenian music school. More information about the charity single ‘Out Of My Mind’ and behind the scenes photos will follow soon.

Ray Gillen BLACK SABBATH’s Eternal Idol to be Released – FOR REAL!

September 16th, 2010
Ray Gillen

Ray Gillen

The below news was posted to the news page of the ultimate Black Sabbath fan site:

I’ve been running this site now for a little over 15 years. In all that time, I get a LOT of requests for bootlegs and whatnot. I generally don’t participate in that stuff, since I do not have time for it. However, it doesn’t stop people from asking. And in all that time, by far the thing I’ve been asked by people if I can send them is the version of the 1987 album “The Eternal Idol”, but with Ray Gillen on vocals.

A short story: After just a handful of dates on the 86 Seventh Star Tour, Glenn Hughes was let go, and Ray Gillen was brought on board. He finished the tour, and work began on the next album, and it was mostly completed. But Ray Gillen left to found the very under appreciated band Badlands (with Eric Singer also from Sabbath), and this left Black Sabbath with a mostly completed album, and no singer. Tony Martin was brought in, and re-recorded all the vocals in two weeks. The album came out with Tony Martin, and the only remaining bit of the Ray Gillen original vocals was some laughter in the track “Nightmare”.

The original Ray Gillen version has been traded in bootleg circles for ages now, but no more! I almost fell over when I was told this news..

TONY IOMMI HAS GIVEN PERMISSION FOR THE RAY GILLEN ETERNAL IDOL ALBUM TO BE RELEASED – FOR REAL!

NOTE: The cover art shown here is NOT the cover art that will be on the final release - that's the bootleg cover art.

NOTE: The cover art shown here is NOT the cover art that will be on the final release - that's the bootleg cover art.

I actually said the the record label guy who told me about this, “Holy shit – are you kidding me?” It’s for real folks. This is the latest entries in the multi CD expanded series of Sabbath remasters that have been released over the last year or two. The most recent ones were the early 80’s Dio albums. That left Born Again, Seventh Star, & The Eternal Idol to go. (Headless Cross through Forbidden were on IRS, and are a separate record deal – which I’m told will eventually happen too). Anyway, the next two albums to be released are going to be Seventh Star & Eternal Idol. Born Again I’m told is not until 2011 sometime, but it will be happening (I’m told with a proper mix, too – but it’s still being worked on).

Anyways, about Eternal Idol. The first disc is the album we’ve known for awhile, with the additional tracks “Some Kind of Woman” & “Black Moon (demo)” included. That’s Disc 1. Disc 2 will comprise the Ray Gillen Eternal Idol album. I mean, WOW. That’s like stupid exciting news!

I’m told the two CD releases of Seventh Star & Eternal Idol will be released on October 25th. As these are Universal releases, that means they won’t be released domestically in the US. But this shouldn’t matter. You should run screaming for this Eternal Idol release when it comes out. It’s a seriously underrated Sabbath album anyway, and to get the Ray Gillen version as well?? Oh yeah, it should be an autopurchase. Even if I wouldn’t get one for free from the label for running this site, I’d be there on day one to buy it for myself.

NOTE: The cover art shown here is NOT the cover art that will be on the final release – that’s the bootleg cover art.

Seventh Star News: This isn’t all about Eternal Idol, there’s a refresh on Seventh Star as well. The first disc of Seventh Star will include the album we know, as well as the remixed version of “No Stranger to Love”, which appears in the music video of the same. Amazon UK’s site lists a second version of that, but I’m not aware of there being more than one remix on there.

Disc 2 however, is a live concert. It was recorded on June 2, 1986 and has Ray Gillen on vocals. After all this time, some heavy duty love for the Ray Gillen incarnation of Black Sabbath. You should buy both of these the second you can.

This is some seriously exciting news. Sadly, they aren’t being released in the US, but the price in the UK isn’t prohibitive, you should have it shipped here to the US. There are supposed to be official press releases out on these shortly, I’ll make sure and pass them along when I get them.

The Eternal Idol is available for pre-order at Amazon.co.uk right now. Click here to be taken to that page where you can pre-order it. Likewise, the two CD of Seventh Star is available for pre-order as well.

BLACK SABBATH – “Ozzy Osbourne And Tony Iommi Have Amicably Resolved Their Problems Over The Ownership Of The Name”

July 20th, 2010

Ozzy Ozbourne and Tony Iommi

“Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi of the legendary heavy metal band BLACK SABBATH have amicably resolved their problems over the ownership of the Black Sabbath name and court proceedings in New York have been discontinued. Both parties are glad to put this behind them and to cooperate together for the future and would like it to be known that the issue was never personal, it was always business.”

As previously reported, Iommi recently spoke to Paul Cole from Sundaymercury.net about a number of topics including the HEAVEN & HELL one-off show – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio, which will be held at the High Voltage Festival on Saturday, July 24th and will feature the vocals of Glenn Hughes (ex-DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH) and Jorn Lande (MASTERPLAN).

“This will be the very last gig we play as Heaven & Hell,” reveals Iommi. “We chose the name because the band comprised the Black Sabbath line-up that made the Heaven & Hell album. We couldn’t carry on under that name without Ronnie. It just wouldn’t be right, and none of us has the desire to do that. We wouldn’t call ourselves Black Sabbath either.”

When asked about what’s next for Iommi he responds: “We’d like to do something, and carry on playing. But in what form – and with what singer – I don’t know. Geezer (Butler) is back in Britain this week so we can rehearse for the tribute. Maybe then we’ll have time to see what the future holds.”

So is a full-blown Black Sabbath reunion on the cards, or have too many harsh words been spoken? Tony is not ruling anything out.

“I spoke to Ozzy while I was in Los Angeles after Ronnie’s funeral, and he said he’d give me a call when he got to England on his own tour,” he reveals. “But I’ve not had that telephone call yet. Ozzy and I have a complicated relationship but we’ve always kept in touch, no matter what else might have been going on. Would I play with Ozzy again? Who knows? It’s weird with me and Ozzy. There can be all sorts of shit going on but when we talk, it’s like nothing bad has ever happened. Once the tribute is done, we can all sit down and decide what it is exactly that we’d like to do.”

BLACK SABBATH Drummer Bill Ward – “I’d Love To Do Another Album And Tour With The Sabs”

July 2nd, 2010

The Times Record’s Scott Smith reports:

Each time he’s cornered by his circular, shiny fortress of Tama drums, BLACK SABBATH’s Bill Ward remains a fierce force in music.

At 62, Sabbath’s original – and most acclaimed – drummer remains muscular and innovative behind his kit, as seen and heard in the latest entry of the Classic Albums DVD series, Black Sabbath: Paranoid. The disc offers an in-depth look at the making of the British band’s groundbreaking second album, Paranoid, and reveals how Ward and fellow co-founders Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar) and Geezer Butler (bass) nailed each song in only two takes back in 1970.

“Yeah, I really enjoyed making that DVD, and we enjoyed making the Paranoid album back then,” Ward said during a recent telephone interview from his home in Seal Beach, CA. “We rehearsed for a lot of tours in Wales, and the songs ‘Electric Funeral’ and ‘Hand of Doom’ were written in Wales. Those were good, really happy times. We were young men, fit and strong.”

Another excerpt from the interview follows:

Ward, Osbourne, Iommi and Butler re-teamed as Black Sabbath for the one-off Live Aid event in 1985 before beginning a series of reunion tours in the 1990s.

“Everyone has an open mind about touring again, but right now, everyone is doing different projects,” said Ward, who will release the hardcore-meets-jazz Accountable Beasts compact disc later this year. “But I’d love to do another album and tour with the Sabs. It keeps me fresh and going.”

Read the full story at The Times Record.

From Hell’s Heart – Giving Up The Ghost (April 2009)

From Hell’s Heart: April 2009

"Giving Up The Ghost"

From Hells Heart...

In most cases, no one likes to run down another’s hard work. Whether or not someone “likes” what a musician has laid down is entirely subjective and varies from person to person, but a critic’s job is to defragment and spout with some intelligence just why an artist’s bread and butter is, well, dried up and moldy.

Which brings us to the topic du jour: “Giving Up The Ghost.” Once a band has passed its’ “best before” date, like a carton of rancid milk or that take-out food that got pushed to the back of the fridge and forgotten, it should be disposed of to avoid exposing innocents to its foul appearance and acrid reek. Sadly, most musicians’ devote their lives to their art and once the commercial well has dried up, they are left with no means of supporting themselves once the days of being mobbed by fans and dating strippers has passed. Others fail to realize—or admit—their own popularity decline and carry on as if the glory days still exist.

Such is the subject of the resurrected “From Hell’s Heart” column here at Metal-Rules.com.

VINNY APPICE – Heaven & Hell, Derringer, 3 Legged Dog, ex-DIO

August 3rd, 2008

VINNY APPICE

Vinny Appice, having got an early introduction to drumming from his big brother Carmine Appice [ex-OZZY OSBOURNE, CACTUS, VANILLA FUDGE], first rose to fame in 1976 in DERRINGER, alongside Rick Derringer, Kenny Aaronson and Danny Johnson. Together they toured and released two studio albums (DERRINGER in 1976 and SWEET EVIL in 1977) and, to cap things off, a live record (LIVE in 1977). Now, after thirty years, the classic lineup of the band (that was only ever together for less than two years to begin with) has been resurrected for some very special appearances around the world. In the interim, like the other members of DERRINGER, Vinny Appice has gone on to achieve even bigger success in various forms. In 1978 he released an album (IT’S A CIRCUS WORLD) with AXIS, before facing the formidable task of filling Bill Ward’s boots, in BLACK SABBATH, for the remainder of the HEAVEN AND HELL tour. He then went on to record the now legendary MOB RULES album with them, as well as the double live record, LIVE EVIL. After Ronnie James Dio’s first reign at the helm of BLACK SABBATH came to an end, Vinny chose to accompany him in forming a brand new band, DIO. Together they went on to record multiple gold (SACRET HEART in 1985) and platinum (HOLY DIVER in 1983 and LAST IN LINE in 1984) selling albums. Finally in 1992 Vinny and Ronnie rejoined BLACK SABBATH for the DEHUMANIZER record and ensuing tour. After the Costa Mesa debacle, Vinny joined Ronnie for another couple of DIO records, before, in the late ’90s, jumping ship again to fill in for ailing Bill Ward on BLACK SABBATH’s "Reunion" tour. More recently Vinny has, among other things, put out an excellent record (FROZEN SUMMER) with his band, 3 LEGGED DOGG, featuring Jimmy Bain (ex-RAINBOW, ex-DIO), Carlos Cavazo (ex-QUIET RIOT), Chas West (ex-BONHAM) and Brian Young. All of this, of course, before once again being called to duty with HEAVEN & HELL to record three new songs for the BLACK SABBATH compilation album (THE DIO YEARS) and a subsequent tour. Now, with a phenomenal tour and a gold selling live release ("LIVE FROM RADIO MUSIC CITY HALL in 2007) to show for it, it’s almost time for another studio album.

We caught up with Vinny after he had just finished a killer show with DERRINGER at the prestigious Sweden Rock Festival (which last year he played with HEAVEN & HELL). Rock ‘n’ Roll!
