SAXON – DECADE OF THE EAGLE

BMG are proud to announce the release of SAXON – DECADE OF THE EAGLE – a deluxe anthology featuring 34 tracks, that looks back at the years that built the Saxon legend.

Additionally, a 1 CD and 1 LP version will be made available for North America, tracklist is below.

BMG in North America will release the 1 CD, 1 LP versions and and then a limited number of the 4 LP editions on Friday, December 1st, 2017.

Decade Of The Eagle is a retrospective that spans the band’s first nine albums and represents the very best of the first decade of their astonishing career during which time they notched up five Top 40 albums and four Top 20 singles. These 4LP and 2CD deluxe editions feature new liner notes by frontman Biff Byford that document the decade and which are accompanied by rarely seen and classic photos from the era.

Biff says:

“These are the albums from a time in the eighties that moved a generation of rock fans around the world, when British rock was once again at the forefront. Great times – never to be forgotten and still reverberating to this day.”

Saxon played a significant part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, perhaps the greatest metal genre of them all and have become one of the all-time masters of heavy metal. In doing so, Saxon have ensured they are now representative of the heart and soul from the NWOBHM time. Always remaining true to the values which established them in the first place they are driven by a desire to continuously set the highest standards and meet them head on, Saxon’s work on those nine studio albums still resonates resoundingly – this is timeless stuff.

Saxon’s music that will continue to inspire Metalheads for generations to come, as it has influenced so many until now. In those immortal words, fill your heads with… HEAVY METAL THUNDER!

From being pioneers of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, to becoming one of the most successful UK rock acts of all time, Saxon have always transcended definitions, trends and eras. From 1979’s ‘Saxon’ album to ‘Destiny’ in ’88, the band enjoyed considerable success both in the UK and further afield. It’s no wonder their influence has spread across the globe, and played a crucial role in the way we look at hard rock and heavy metal today. The decade from ’79’s debut record was vital, not only in establishing Saxon’s talent and reputation, but also in laying the foundations for what has followed.

DOUG SCARRAT

INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

Saxon, the legendary English heavy metal band, was founded in 1976. They are one of the pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and during the 80’s Saxon established themselves as one of Europe’s biggest metal acts. The band is still going strong and they tour on a regular basis. They have released 21 studio albums including their newest, BATTERING RAM, which came out in October 2015. The band arrived Finland on 6th of December along with Motörhead and Girlschool. I then sat down with the band’s long-term guitarist Doug Scarratt in Helsinki and we discussed many different topics such as touring with Motörhead and the new Saxon album.

Edit: It should be noted that when this interview took place, we had no idea what was going to happen for Lemmy in just a few weeks…  😥

SAXON – Interview with Biff Byford

SAXON – Interview with Biff Byford

Interview conducted by Robert Williams

Video courtesy of William Prewitt
Editing courtesy of Sandra Torres

British heavy metal legends Saxon recently toured the U.S. for the second time this year, on a monster billing recalling the now-classic “Bombers & Eagles Tour” of ’92, alongside the monolithic road-dog punters in Motörhead and the up-and-coming hard rockers in Crobot. I was lucky enough to catch up with Saxon vocalist Biff Byford prior to the band’s performance in Austin, Texas for a pre-show interview, Biff went into depth on the band’s new album “Battering Ram” as well as Saxon’s lengthy history with Lemmy & Motörhead. September 1st marked my third interview with the NWOBHM legend for Metal-Rules.com and later that night Saxon delivered in full once-more to a capacity crowd of “Denim & Leather” clad metal warriors who all stood up to be counted! Saxon is a timeless band more than capable of putting on an unforgettable night of heavy metal classics, perhaps only rivaled by the likes of fellow fathers of the craft like Accept, Priest, Maiden or Manowar. Their dedication to heavy metal is nothing short of inspiring and their lineage and discography grows stronger year-by-year as they continue to push the envelope, metallicly speaking. Here’s to many more years of “Heavy Metal Thunder” from Saxon! Read the rest of this entry »

REPORT AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

The British NWOBHM legends, Saxon, released their 19th studio album CALL TO ARMS in May 2011 and they have been touring heavily across the globe. Although the band had been annual visitors to Finland, they now played their first show in Helsinki in four years! The support band for this leg of tour was Canadian metal band Anvil. It seems that there’s a great demand for these classic bands in Finland as this show sold out with the 1000 person capacity reached right after tickets came on sale.

Saxon’s Nibbs Carter and Paul Quinn

September 26th, 2006

INTERVIEW WITH PAUL QUINN AND NIBBS CARTER

The legendary Saxon doesn’t need too much introduction here but I will do it briefly anyway. Saxon, who originally called themselves Son of a Bitch, was formed in1977 by vocalist Biff Byford, guitarists Graham Olivier and Paul Quinn, bassist Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill. Their early albums “Denim and Leather”, “Wheels of Steel” and “Strong Arm Of The Law” are heralded as some of the most important NWOBHM classics. A ground breaking live album “The Eagle Has Landed” was released in 1983 and still today, along with such classic as Motorheads “No Sleep At All”, it’s often mentioned as one of the most important live releases from that period. Since those days the band has gone through many ups and downs. There has been a great number of line -up changes, problems with record companies, problems with former band members and low record sales but on the other hand over the last few years they have succeeded to reach a new, strong and loyal fanbase who have helped them to re-create their glory days. Their recent albums “Lionheart”, Killing Ground” and “Metalhead” are modern heavy metal classics and are also living proof that Saxon is alive and well. Recently the band released a brand new live album “The Eagle Has Landed III” which continues the saga which originally started in 1983. I managed to catch Paul Quinn and Nibbs Carter after their great show in Ruisrock and here is the transcription of our lengthy causerie, hope you like it?
