Amon Amarth-Darket Era - Limelight Belfast

WHEN agreeing to review Amon Amarth Belfast date I did warn the commissioning editor that I would be opting for the more visceral experience of reviewing it with a pint or two, (ahem!) and probably from the pit.

Undeterred, she gave the okay! Given Amon Amarth are one of my favourite bands, it was inevitable that I’d want to be in the thick of the action when the Swedes came to town!

Black Star Riders

Just over a year ago, the latest incarnation of Thin Lizzy played Belfast’s newly rejuvenated Limelight complex on what would be the penultimate date of that particular ‘Farewell Tour’. The Rock n’ Roll grapevine had been busy spitting out rumors that the current line-up had been writing new material and after that gig the fans were eagerly awaiting some kind of news about a new release from the Thin Lizzy camp.

Steve Vai @ Mandela Hall, Belfast

FOR some, Steve Vai is just simply a fantastically fast and talented guitar player – but there is sometimes among the few who have not witnessed him live are those who doubt that he can deliver a coherent live rock show.

Until this Mandella Hall date I was one of those – of course I admire his recorded output, but could I really put up with two and a half hours of widdly, widdly guitar worship?

It was just a week shy of four years since the progressive metal band that everyone loves to hate, Dragonforce, had last headlined this very same venue and on that occasion, they were absolutely atrocious, with some fans walking out and others booing the band off stage… but, we’ll come back to this train of thought in a few paragraph’s time.
