ARSIS – Interview with guitarist/vocalist James Malone

By Peter Atkinson

Photos from facebook.com/arsis

Arsis mainman and lone original member James Malone has had to deal with quite a bit over the Virginia Beach, Va.-based melodic/technical death metal band’s decade-plus career. Frequent lineup changes and Malone’s own well-chronicled health problems — notably a 2008 recurrence of the anorexia he’d dealt with as a teenager that was brought on, ironically, when he quit drinking alcohol after becoming what he described as a “fat, bloated drunk” — have presented significant obstacles for the band, who have had to refute rumors of a break-up on more than one occasion.

Arsis dropped off of tours with Faceless and Carcass, missed dates on others, played shows without a bassist and did a tour with Firewind in 2011 that Malone himself was forced to sit out. Over the last year or so the band lost drummer and Malone’s long-time cohort Mike Van Dyke for a second time and guitarist Nick Cordle left to join Arch Enemy – following in the footsteps of ex-guitarist Ryan Knight, who’d left to join The Black Dahlia Murder and live drummer David Kinkade who moved onto Soulfly.

Yet here they remain, a testament to — unfortunately quite literally — what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Arsis issued the six-track EP, Lepers Caress, through Scion A/V, late last year and have followed up with their fifth full-length Unwelcome, due April 30 on Nuclear Blast, both packed with the band’s unique mish-mash of death metal brutality, classic metal catchiness and classical dexterity and elegance. And they are jumping right out on the road that originally had them opening for Swedish heavyweights Hypocrisy, however Hypocrisy announced April 26 – after this interview was conducted – that they would not be able to take part in the tour because of visa issues, leaving Arsis to headline the shows with Krisiun as well as some scheduled dates on their own. After that, Arsis were looking forward to a busy, productive year ahead.

As the band readied to hit the road, Malone took a few moments to answer a batch of questions via e-mail and sounded pretty upbeat about where things with Arsis stand right now and what lies ahead.

ARSIS Announce New Guitarist

November 9th, 2012

Virginia-based melodic tech-death metal masters ARSIS, are pleased to officially announce Brandon Ellis as their new guitarist. Brandon has toured with the band in the past but will finally make his recording debut with ARSIS’ upcoming full-length release. Brandon replaces guitarist Nick Cordle who was recently tapped to replace Christopher Amott in Swedish supergroup, ARCH ENEMY.

“I am super happy to say that Brandon Ellis has recently become the new lead guitarist for ARSIS,” commented vocalist/guitarist Jim Malone. “Not only is he one of the best musicians that I have been able to work with, but he shares my passion for all things that are 80′s metal, including ridiculously tacky paint jobs on guitars. I am beyond excited about writing new material with Brandon. Until then, listen for his shredilicious leads on the upcoming ARSIS full length. Come check him out live with ARSISthis December!”

“Initially when Nick joined ARCH ENEMY, we all thought we could make it work with him having the time for both bands,” continued bassist Noah Martin. “Things unfortunately overlapped and we weren’t able to work on the new album with him. We appreciate everything he’s done for ARSIS. We’ll miss our friend greatly and do wish him all the best. Both Nick and Ryan Knight (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER), contributed ridiculous leads for the album.

Brandon‘s solos on this full-length are both crushing and particularly creative. His presence, along with Shawn‘s (Priest – drums), were integral to the tone of this album. We’re in the post-production stage, now that the masters were just finished. In the meantime, come have beers with us on the SONATA ARCTICA run!”

Check out a quick example of Brandon’s playing here.

ARSIS Begin Tracking New Album

June 13th, 2012

Virginia-based melodic tech-death metal masters, ARSIS, started tracking drums for their fifth full-length release on June 7th with new drummer/longtime session member, Shawn Priest. The album is being tracked at Audiohammer Studios in FL with producer Mark Lewis (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER, DEICIDE, SIX FEET UNDER). The follow up to their 2010 release Starve For The Devil is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2012 release via Nuclear Blast.

“I am so pleased with the way this album is coming together,” commented founding guitarist and vocalist James Malone. “I know we all have put ourselves into this recording and I am sure this will be reflected in the end product. Noah and I did more pre-production for the album than any other ARSIS recording, Now, I just have to remember all the parts I tracked for the demos.”

Bassist Noah Martin added: “Shawn‘s in the thick of tracking drums right now. We lost a little bit of time because of a tropical storm but wasn’t too detracting. The album art is in the works as well as attaining the rights for the bonus track. If all goes as planned we’ll have an seriously-fucking-filthy album to show for the past few months of effort.”

Shawn Priest continued: “Seven songs down, and four to go. The drums sound amazing raw, so I can’t even imagine how they will sound after Mark impregnates them with his producer juice.”

Check out pre-production for the track “Choking On Sand” at GuitarWorld.com http://www.guitarworld.com/exclusive-arsis-premiere-pre-production-demo-new-song-choking-sand.

Formed in 2000 by Berklee prodigies James Malone and Mike Van Dyne, ARSIS has grown a strong and steady following for their unique intellectual brand of melodic death metal through various lineup changes. Recently, ARSIS guitarist Nick Cordle was tapped to replace Christopher Amott in the Swedish supergroup, ARCH ENEMY.

Starve For The Devil was released in North America on February 9th and debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

ARSIS ANNOUNCES NEW DRUMMER SHAWN PRIEST

April 6th, 2012

Pre-production version of “Choking On Sand” streaming online

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Virginia melodic death metal veteran, Arsis, has announced Shawn Priest as the full-time replacement for recently departed drummer, Mike VanDyne. Priest, who has toured with Arsis in the past, will be behind the kit for the band’s upcoming fifth studio album.

Commented Priest, “After several major tours with Arsis since 2008, I am more than happy to take the position of full-time drummer. These guys have become some of my best friends and based on the new material we’ve been putting together, I think the new record will be one of the best and most extreme Arsis releases to date. Get stoked people.”

“I am beyond thrilled with the pre-production for the new album and the addition of Shawn Priest on drums,” said guitarist/vocalist, James Malone. “Shawn has done many tours for Arsis and felt we it was time to give him the respect he deserves and bring him on as the full-time drummer. Shawn’s input into the new songs has made them more intense than I could have ever imagined.”

“We weren’t looking for a drummer who robotically plays a thousand miles an hour,” added bassist, Noah Martin. “Anyone who’s seen us with Shawn knows he’s capable of playing pretty much anything, but with tremendous feel. We’ve put him through hell, hiring him to fill in on multiple tours over the years, and we’re glad we can welcome him to the fold.

“That being said, we understand and respect the decision Mike made, given the circumstances. I know I speak for all of us when I say it wasn’t necessarily an easy one to make. His involvement helped get the band to where it is today, and we’ll always miss playing with him.

“We have nine songs so far that we’re continuing to tweak, and still tossing around ideas forcover tunes. We hope to create a pivotal album that sums up everything that Arsis was, is and will be.”

Arsis is currently in the pre-production stages of its impending full-length with producer, Mark Lewis. The new record will serve as the follow-up to 2010’s, Starve For The Devil (Nuclear Blast Records), with sold 1,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release, landing at #13 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart.

“I’m truly excited to be producing the new Arsis record,” said Lewis. “The new material I’ve been hearing from James is nothing short of awesome. I’m such a huge fan of A Celebration of Guilt, as well as A Diamond For Disease, which was produced by my Audiohammer colleague, Eyal Levi. This new material sees the band come full circle and I’m so stoked they’ve landed here at Audiohammer. It’s about time!”

The band has posted a updated pre-production version of the new track, “Choking On Sand,” online: http://soundcloud.com/nuclearblastrecords/arsis-choking-on-sand-updated to show off Priest’s punishing percussionary prowess, and to give fans a glimpse of what to expect on the upcoming album.

“I feel it is safe to say that this is going to be the most brutal Arsis album to date,” added Malone. “So excited!”

ARSIS: Guitar Lesson Online / Tour Kicks Off Today

October 6th, 2011

Nick Cordle, guitarist of Virginia-based melodic tech-death metal masters ARSIS, has posted a video breaking down the riffs to the brand new song “Since the Shadows”.  Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-uPtPB6YkM to view the lesson.

As previously announced, ARSIS will be kicking off the “Frets of Fury Tour” today without guitarist/vocalist Jim Malone. The band recently announced the very talented musicians filling in for Jim in his absence.

Mike Parks will be performing vocals for the tour in October,” commented the band. “He’s the obvious choice as he has helped us out in the past when Malone lost his voice, and was actually the singer of the band that became ARSIS. He is a long-time friend and an extremely strong singer, and we’re happy to have him with us.

We’d also like to introduce Brandon Ellis. This is something incredibly special.  He is a young guy who plays with the kind of maturity that has become rare in the modern metal and shred scene. His presence will take the guitar chops in ARSIS to a new high. Talk is cheap, so see for yourself  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBUCWKt04AA.

WE ARE NOT CANCELING.  ‘The Frets of Fury’ tour was built specifically around the participation of ARSIS and it would be dishonorable to back out and hang everybody out to dry. So we are bringing a brutal set of new music (some of which we’ve already shared online) and some old ones, which have never been played live despite a constant clamor for them.  The lineup is AWESOME as all at the shows will soon discover.”

Jim Malone recently commented on his not taking part in the tour:
“Due to professional and personal commitments I am unable to tour with ARSIS at this time. For the upcoming tour with FIREWIND, rather than drop off the tour entirely, we’ve decided to hire live musicians, some of whom have long been associated with my band.  I have given Nick and Noah my blessing and am certain the lineup will be great. My sincerest apologies to anyone who is annoyed or disappointed by my absence. Please go and support ARSIS and check out some of our new songs, which they will be playing every night!”

Check out this video statement from guitarist Nick Cordle that includes pre-production demos of brand new songs that will be played on the tour here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2mzBXH5M9Q.

ARSIS vocalist/guitarist Jim Malone commented:

“What does a band that is notorious for canceling tours, video game induced tendinitis, and a Noah Martin look-a-like all have in common?  If you have spent the better part of your existence trying to play 16th triplet arpeggios at 250 bpm you will probably be overcome with joy (or something) to hear that we (meaning ARSIS dudes), POWERGLOVE, and CONDUCTING FROM THE GRAVE are teaming up for a US tour this December.  We are beyond stoked for our first headlining tour in support of Starve for the Devil and hope to see you at one (or more) of the tour dates.  We promise to ‘turn up the hell’ on this one and make your weekend (or week night) one that is ‘rock hard’ and metalificated.”
