ARCH ENEMY

THE CIRCUS, HELSINKI

Arch Enemy has been a regular visitor in Finland during the last few years. The band has gone through several line-up changes but it seems that the group has done something right because Arch Enemy’s popularity has risen has steadily year after year. The band released its tenth studio album WILL TO POWER in September, and it reached respectable number 2 place on the official Finnish album list. So, it wasn’t surprising that the Circus show sold out a long time ago.

The opening act was a band called Jinjer, they come from Ukraine and have a female vocalist in the band. That’s about everything what I know about the band, and unfortunately, I missed their show completely because of my late arrival to the venue. At 10:30 PM, the AC/DC classic ‘Thunderstruck’ rang loud and clear over the PA, as the five members of Arch Enemy stepped onto the stage amidst huge cheers in the completely packed Circus. The band opened up with the first single off WILL TO POWER album, entitled “The World Is Yours”. The speedy, up-tempo song was a perfect opener, and it was followed by classic “Ravenous,” which incited a massive mosh pit in the audience.

Vocalist Alissa White-Gluz took over the crowd’s attention and made her presence felt. The mini-sized, striking hair colored and continuously headbanging frontwoman bounded and jumped across the stage like a hurricane. She was looking very comfortable and confident in her significant role within the band. She’s an excellent frontwoman and performer in every aspect, and she’s very entertaining to follow on stage.

The band’s set revolved heavily around the latest two albums without forgetting the classics from the Angela Gossow era. The newer songs such as “The World Is Yours,” ‘War Eternal,’ ‘As the Pages Burn’ “The Eagle Flies Alone” and ‘You Will Know My Name’ sounded modern melodic death metal at its best. But the older Gossow era songs ‘Ravenous’, ‘We Will Rise,’ ‘No Gods, No Masters’ and ‘Nemesis’ proved, that despite Arch Enemy has gone through numerous line-up changes, the band has always been able to create great metal anthems through their whole career.

Arch Enemy’s set closed with the band’s Johan Liiva era classic “Fields of Desolation.” The song was the only track performed from that period, and it was a good reminder how the band sounded in the beginning and how their style has changed over the years. Personally, I’m more a fan of the current direction, but I’m sure that there are a lot of Arch Enemy fans who prefer the early stuff. However, the important thing is that Alissa sounded just amazing, no matter which era songs she was doing. She’s now more than filling the boots of her predecessor.

The whole band sounded flawless, a well-oiled touring machine. The trade-off guitar solos between Michael Amott and the latest addition, former Nevermore guitarist, Jeff Loomis were outstanding, precise and non-stop, enhanced by a slick light show and lots of hair-whipping. The longstanding rhythm section of bassist Sharlee De’ Angelo and drummer Daniel Erlandsson played perfectly together, and they kept the machine rolling through the entire performance. The song material is overall really strong and also the stage setup looked visually great. There are no weak links in this band. There is no denying how good and tight live band Arch Enemy are. They’re probably one of the best metal bands out there now, if not the best if you ask me.

Angela Gossow Steps down as Frontwoman for ARCH ENEMY; Replacement Announced

March 17th, 2014

Arch Enemy

In early June 2014, Arch Enemy will unleash their 9th studio album, War Eternal, worldwide via Century Media Records and Trooper Entertainment in Japan. With this upcoming release, the band will introduce a new member to their ranks: Alissa White-Gluz, former vocalist of Canadian extreme metallers The Agonist. Angela Gossow, who joined Arch Enemy in 2000 and made her debut on the now classic Wages Of Sin (2001), will be stepping down as front-woman and focusing on management, while Alissa takes her place.

Angela Gossow comments:
“Dear ARCH ENEMY fans, this is not easy to tell you…I have decided to step down from being ARCH ENEMY’s voice of anger. After 13 years of pure fucking metal, 6 studio albums and countless tours through five continents, I feel the need to enter a different phase in my life, be with my family and pursue other interests. I will however remain business manager for ARCH ENEMY, and I will continue to develop my artist management roster. I am staying true to my heavy metal roots, just leaving the spotlight so to speak. I am passing the torch to the super talented Alissa White-Gluz, whom I’ve known as a dear friend and a superb vocalist for many years. I always thought she deserved a chance to shine – and now she’s getting it. Just like I got that chance back in 2001.

I want to thank all ARCH ENEMY fans, our labels Century Media (worldwide) and Trooper Entertainment (Japan), our dedicated road crew, and in particular Michael, Daniel and Sharlee for their love and support throughout all these years. It’s been one hell of a ride! We conquered every situation, made it through thick & thin together in the most exciting and rewarding time of my life. Thank you all for being there with me on stage, in front of the stage, and backstage. You have touched my heart, and I hope I was able to give something back to you. I am grateful for the wonderful memories – I will cherish them forever! I am looking forward to the next decade of ARCH ENEMY madness! Right now I am listening through rough mixes of the new studio album and I am blown away! 2014 will see a renewed ARCH ENEMY at the top of their game. I am proud to be part of this ARCH ENEMY chapter, albeit in a different way – revving up the engines behind the scenes. I hope to see you in front of the stage; I will join you there this time. Let the killing begin, once again!”
