Anaal Nathrakh

Following on from the release of their latest album, Desideratum, it seems that Anaal Nathrakh can do very little wrong. Having played sets at both Temples Festival and Damnation recently, this band have long been proving they can pull some serious crowds. Hitting the Black Heart that evening, the night had long been sold-out due it’s minuscule capacity. The event promised to be one the most intimately explosive gigs seen in a long time. Sitting down with Vocalist Dave, we discuss the ins and outs of what makes up Anaal Nathrakh.

Camden has long been known for the place to find some of the most exciting metal music in London, hidden down the back alley is one of the areas up and coming venues, The Black Heart. It’s not the first time this venue has seen bands bigger than its boots play their stage, with Red Fang hosting an exclusive intimate gig at the venue. Pulling in another mega-band for a special Monday night performance, Anaal Nathrakh take to the stage for an exclusive intimate show.

ANAAL NATHRAKH – Interview with David Hunt

Interview with David “V.I.T.R.I.O.L.” Hunt

By Peter Atkinson

English/American hybrid Anaal Nathrakh are one of the most intriguing and unusual bands in extreme music – with an emphasis on unusual and extreme. The duo – California-based guitarist/bassist/programmer Mick Kenney, an English transplant, and Birmingham, England-based vocalist David Hunt, also known fittingly as “V.I.T.R.I.O.L” – work in mysterious ways to produce a punishingly unique shit-storm of black/death metal, grindcore, industrial and electronic music.

Anaal Nathrakh tour sparingly, but have been remarkably productive since forming in 1999. Their latest album, the just-released Desideratum, is their eighth, to go along with an EP. Over time, the band’s chaotic music – occasionally flavored by contributions from Mayhem’s Attila Csihar, Napalm Death’s Shane Embury and Danny Herrera, Lock Up’s Nick Barker and Watain’s Set Teitan – has grown bigger, brasher and more calamitous.

Desideratum is Anaal Nathrakh’s most thunderous effort yet. Amazingly, it’s also their most immediate and easiest to warm up to, thanks in part to Kenney’s slashing hooks and crushing grooves, some surprisingly infectious rampaging melodies and Hunt’s vocal gymnastics. The apocalypse never sounded so awesome.

On the phone from the U.K. – a week after a Skype failure put the kibosh on a batch of interviews with the states, mine included – Hunt talked about Anaal Nathrakh’s unconventional logistics, incendiary sonic mish-mash and the unorthodox method by which it gets made.

ANAAL NATHRAKH Prepare For Release Of Vanitas

September 6th, 2012

Candlelight Records today confirms November 6 as the North American release date for Vanitas, the new album from England’s ANAAL NATHRAKH. Produced by Mick Kenney (Bleeding Through, Ingested), the album carries the band’s signature and regarded union of black metal and grindcore.

There is no other band that creates music as frightening as the Birmingham-based metallers. With both screaming banshee and traditional vocals set against a backdrop of the utmost sonic foundation, MetalSucks calls them “a master class in extreme metal.” Vanitas, their seventh album, “sounds like someone showing you what the end of the world is like via the medium of a thousand hammers soaked in acid,” says vocalist Dave Hunt. Digging into the record particulars he notes, “It’s more articulate and focused than any album before it in way of composition and recording technique. We worked hard and we’re convinced it has paid off.”

Since being founded in 1999, ANAAL NATHRAKH has gained a reputation for embodying the audio essence of pure evil. Various collaborations with the likes of Sethlans Teitan (Watain), Shane Embury and Danny Herrera (Napalm Death), and others, have placed the band high on media as well metal fans “must seek out” list. This alongside countless placements in “Best Album Of The Month/Year’” awards, ANAAL NATHRAKH’s status as one of the leading lights in extreme metal is undeniable. Decibel Magazine says, “these dudes split ‘terrifyingly heavy and fierce’ and ‘giant dork’ straight down the middle and sew it up again like Dr. Frankenstein working on the monster.” MetalSucks adds, “ANAAL NATHRAKH are one of the best bands out there when it comes to evoking horror and terror.”

ANAAL NATHRAKH will tour Canada for the first time just as Vanitas is released. Beginning in Montreal on November 7, the tour will end in Sherbrooke on November 18. Full tour dates are available on the band and Candlelight’s official Facebook pages.

Vanitas Track List:

1. The Blood-Dimmed Tide

2. Forging Towards the Sunset

3. To Spite the Face

4. Todos Somos Humanos

5. In Coelo Quies, Tout Finis Ici Bas

6. You Can’t Save Me, So Stop F*cking Trying

7. Make Glorious The Embrace of Saturn

8. Feeding the Beast

Exhumed & Anaal Nathrakh

@ The Garage

March 23rd  2012

Review by Joffie Lovett

Approaching the venue in London coming out of Highbury & Islington tube station, the first inkling I have is one of a bit of worry that this concert may not happen at all, as when leaving the station the crowd is confronted by multiple fire fighting vehicles and crew all outside with blue lights on and everyone looking slightly confused. Luckily when getting further towards them it seems as though whatever major incident had occurred has been dealt with and the fire fighters are just standing around and chatting in front of the venue, a weird experience for the start of a show but one of those things I guess.

Standing in the queue, I can’t help but notice the large amount of younger people in their late teens attending the show which I found surprising compared to the more-older fans you often find at extreme metal shows throughout London. They all seem extremely excited, enthusiastic and chomping at the bit to see both bands live so it’s great to see the more extreme forms of metal reaching younger fans. Oddly enough a few members of the crowd are waiting in line reading books whilst waiting to enter the venue as well, I couldn’t see what books they were reading but hopefully material from Friedrich Nietzsche (given his influence on Anaal Nathrakh’s material) or such like rather than The Very Hungry Caterpillar or Spot The Dog…
