This is a review of the third edition of Getaway Rock Festival that was held in Gavle, Sweden during three hot days in July. The festival has a new organizer – the German FKP Skorpio – and we were eager to see how the festival was planned this year. We got to see some exclusive Swedish performances by Suicidal Tendencies, Nightwish, Venom, Manowar, Ministry and Yngwie Malmsteen to mention a few. Other acts that performed were Mustasch, Saxon, Finntroll, Satyricon, Behemoth, Devin Townsend Project and Ghost. Read more about the festival down below.

Amon Amarth to appear at Sweden Rock 2013!

October 5th, 2012

Melodic death metal that is not poppy, nor influenced by folk music though the lyrics deal with Norse mythology and Viking themes. Amon Amarth from Stockholm have walked their own path on their way to becoming one of the most succesful death metal-bands of our time. They formed as early as 1992 and got their first minor breakthrough with their lauded fourth album ”Versus the world” (2002), where their sound for the first time was dominated by heaviness rather than speed. From that point, Amon Amarth earned increasingly greater success with albums like ”With Oden on our side” (2006), ”Twilight of the thunder god” (2008) and ”Surtur rising” (2011). Powerful guitar work, a relentless rhythm section and grandiose achievements from Johan Hegg, a frontman who both looks and sounds as if he was was born to perform in a band like this – a combination that has made Amon Amarth international metal stars.

Rush
Status Quo
UFO
Krokus
Amon Amarth
Demon
Amaranthe
Axxis
Morgana Lefay
Witchcraft
Huntress
The Scams

Many, many more bands – big and small, and from most rock/metal sub genres – are still to be confirmed, so expect more announcements soon.

Sweden Rock Festival is taking place in Sölvesborg, southern Sweden on June 5-8 2013. Tickets will be made available this Tuesday, September 25th, at 9pm.

AMON AMARTH launch their own interactive fan club

May 14th, 2012

AMON AMARTH is launching their very own interactive fan club, called Mobile Backstage, for smartphones, Facebook and for the Web.

“This will allow us to have a more direct communication with our fans, and will speed up the information process for everything such as news and tour dates, as well as give our fans some special peeks behind the scenes of future tours and festivals,” says Johan Hegg.

“When we first thought of creating our own app, we pretty soon realized that the mobile backstage solution was the right thing for us. It’s a combination of mobile and Facebook apps and a web interface that creates a digital fan club and allows us to reach all our fans no matter where they are,” says Fredrik Andersson.

“We’re very excited to bring Mobile Backstage to Amon Amarth,” said Paavo Bäckman, the CEO of Mobile Backstage.

With Mobile Backstage, AMON AMARTH and their fans can exchange news, pictures, videos, audio clips and messages in an intimate and personal environment, far from the noise and clutter of other social media. Fans can send messages to other fans, find and check into gigs, see the location of other fans and their online posts, play audio, and purchase tracks and tickets.

Tuska Open Air 2011 – Suvilahti Helsinki Finland

Tuska Open Air 2011

Suvilahti, Helsinki, Finland

July 22-24, 2011

Review by Arto Lehtinen, Petri Seppänen Da Costa

The Tuska Open Air Festival has become one kind of institution amongst all metal festivals in Europe. Tuska was previously arranged in the heart of Helsinki in the central park Kaisaniemi during the past 10 years. The park underwent construction to have a better environment and other mandatory improvements. The organization of Tuska didn’t have a choice but to find and switch the whole festival to a new area. This new area is still located in Helsinki, but only a few kilometers away, to a place called Suvilahti. Having this area was definitely a big part of the whole idea and concept of Tuska. The Kaisaniemi park brought an intimate picnic and park feeling with the grass and trees. Whereas Suvilahti was more like an industrial environment with the burning and redhot asphalt under the feet.

Another thing forcing Tuska to make a change was the date. Originally the festival was supposed to be in the beginning of July, but another big more international based festival took over the date and Tuska was postponed until three weeks later. Well at least some people got pissed off at the changed date. Obviously a few band negotiations needed to start all over. Hopefully Tuska will return back to the original date. However, the line-up looked amazing after all. Morbid Angel and Amon Amarth were headliners, so was Devin Townsend once again. Cult metal bands like Hell, Bulldozer and then something type of stuff such as Jex Thoth, Church Of Misery. The festival was an utter success although the event wasn’t sold out. All in all 28000 people visited Tuska during three days.

Metal-Rules.com was present to check out a lot of bands and check out the new Tuska area.

AMON AMARTH To Return To North America This August

May 18th, 2011
Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

Following up a hugely successful U.S. headlining tour that found the band touring without support and instead performing two separate sets each night, melodic death metal legends AMON AMARTH will return to North America for the second leg of the “An Evening With AMON AMARTH” tour.

Scheduled to kick off in Vancouver on August 4, the trek will ravage its way through 22 cities, including several Canadian venues, and come to a close in Boise on September 3. The first set will again feature the band performing the recently-released, critically-acclaimed Surtur Rising album in its entirety while the second will offer up mixed bag of tunes from their extensive catalog of Norse-inspired awesomeness.

Commented the band in a collective statement: “Yes, it is true! We are coming back to tour North America. The Spring tour turned out to be so successful, and we had such a great time playing the double sets each night, that we decided to bring ‘An evening With AMON AMARTH’ to the rest of the continent, including Canada! We will perform the new album in its entirety, and after that we’re doing a revised second set with all the classics as well as some ‘wild-cards.’”

The eighth studio offering from one of Sweden’s finest death metal exports, Surtur Rising was released in North America on March 29, 2011 via Metal Blade Records and continues to reap praise from fans and critics alike. AMON AMARTH nailed a cover spot of the April 2011 issue of Decibel Magazine and earned a 9/10 rating from Outburn who commended the band for delivering “a collection that is brimming with beefy riffs, insidious melodies, and a truly epic sense of scale.” Fearnet.com agreed saying AMON AMARTH is now “at the head of the class,” Metal Review gave it a 9.2/10 score calling it “one of the band’s very best releases,” while Metal Army America offered up a grade “A” review noting, “from the Stockholm-bred riff style to frontman Johan Hegg’s Cimmerian-esque performance as growler du jour, AMON AMARTH’s Surtur Rising proves to be an essential and defining listen for band and fans alike.”

In a recap of the band’s live performance, Concertconfessions.com opined: “What is most beautiful about AMON AMARTH’s triumph of America is that it’s as pure as the music itself… Friends sharing with friends the magic of the music, that is a true token of success and judging on the reaction from Southern California on Easter Sunday 2011 – AMON AMARTH will have success for a very long time.” The Washington Times applauded the band for leaving, “the sold-out crowd awestruck by [their] mastery of melodic death metal,” About.com boasted, “I was highly impressed by AMON AMARTH’s stage presentation, which easily rivals that of bands that normally fill arenas,” while Skullsnbones.com put it simply: “One band came and conquered Atlanta and their name is AMON AMARTH. Hailz!”

AMON AMARTH U.S. Tour To Commence Today; Band Comments On Surtur Rising Success

April 14th, 2011
Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising

Melodic death metal titans, AMON AMARTH, today kick off their long-anticipated near two-week run of live dates in support of latest studio offering Surtur Rising.

Dubbed “An Evening With AMON AMARTH,” this special tour will find the band performing two sets each night with no openers. The first set will feature the band performing Surtur Rising in its entirety while the second will boast a collection of songs from previous releases. The Viking-inspired mayhem will begin tonight in Chicago at The Bottom Lounge.

Released on March 29 via Metal Blade Records, Surtur Rising has topped the charts both domestically and abroad and continues to reap praise from critics and fans around the globe for its sheer debilitating heaviness. Said Decibel of the offering: “…it’s a pleasure to learn one of metal’s most consistent bands remains as indefatigable as ever.” L.A. Music Blog called Surtur Rising, “the epitome of what death metal should be: ferocious and crushing. It’s possibly the band’s best work to date,” Blabbermouth compared the record to being, “…bludgeoned by your favorite warhammer. Definitely a contender for this year’s best,” while Metal Bite commended the record saying, “Surtur Rising is not just an album, it’s a fantastic tale that’s presented with honor and dignity. This is some of the band’s most dynamic work yet and I cannot emphasize enough how you need to pick up a copy when this is released!” Metal Curse called it, “absolutely amazing from beginning to end,” while Crave Metal put it simply: “EPIC!”

Commented guitarist Olavi Mikkonen: “We can’t thank our fans enough for showing their appreciation of our music and making this album our most successful release to date. We are looking forward to performing the songs from Surtur Rising live and delivering a powerful, crushing set! See you on tour, cheers!”

The mammoth long-player has been reaping incredible praise from critics nationwide. In a 9/10 review, Blabbermouth compared Surtur Rising to being, “…bludgeoned by your favorite warhammer. Definitely a contender for this year’s best.” Fearnet called it a, “feast of world-destroying metal on par with the band’s career-defining 2008 release Twilight Of The Thunder God,” while Decibel Magazine commended the band noting, “it’s a pleasure to learn one of metal’s most consistent bands remains as indefatigable as ever.” Pop Matters called the record “…another momentous album for AMON AMARTH, leaving no doubt that they are one of the best metal bands in the world!,” and Live-Metal agreed: “…one of the strongest, most massively heavy death metal bands around…”

In conjunction with Surtur Rising’s release, AMON AMARTH will make their way to the U.S. for a near two-week stretch of live dates later this month. Dubbed “An Evening With AMON AMARTH,” this special trek will find the band performing two separate sets each night: one which will feature Surtur Rising in its entirety and another boasting a collection of songs from previous releases.
