Gigs on a Monday evening are never an ideal time for concert goers, as getting up the next morning can be nothing but an exhausting deadly experience. In this case, when three are awesome bands sharing the bill: Hell, Carcass and Amon Amarth, the exception can be accepted and getting up late for the work or school can be approved. The Cable Factory was totally packed as over a thousand metal bangers had arrived to share the metal feeling despite the blowing ice cold winter wind.

SWEDENROCK FESTIVAL 2013
Article and pictures by Arto Lehtinen and Marko Syrjälä
“Welcome to the show” – welcomed by KISS when headlining the second day of the Sweden Rock fest. Well, once again the Finnish Metal-Rules.com team made their annual roadtrip to Sweden Rock. Metal Rules has covered Swedenrock since 2001, therefore it is quite logical to cover the festival again. The 2013 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide. It has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article on several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The weather was tremendous during these four days. The Metal-Rules.com team was there witnessing bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Rock on!

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2013
San Bernardino, California

The San Manuel Amphitheatre is situated in a classic California desert-mountain valley. It was in this harsh, desolate, and port-a-potty-covered wasteland that the first day of Mayhem Festival 2013 took place. There was literally nothing else around the festival; just tall, brown, shrub-covered mountains and lots and lots of dust. The day itself was so hellishly hot – peaking at a scorching 107 F – it was almost as if Satan himself had a hand with the weather (maybe he was even at the festival; he’s kind of into the metal scene, isn’t he?). I’m sure the Mayhem people made a fortune on the ice cold $3 waters and $6 lemonades they were peddling all day long, and I witnessed at least one girl pass out from the heat. But with a name like Mayhem, what else would you expect?

AMON AMARTH – Interview with Johan Hegg
By Peter Atkinson
Photos from www.facebook.com/OfficialAmonAmarth
Swedish behemoths Amon Amarth will unleash their ninth studio album Deceiver Of The Gods June 25, just a few days before they invade American shores again to be part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, where they will be first death metal act to be featured on the main stage lineup.
Amon Amarth have enjoyed a steady rise in popularity in the states since 2006’s With Oden On Our Side, cracking the Billboard Top 200 for the first time with 2008’s Twilight Of The Thunder God and the Top 40 with 2011’s Surtur Rising. And there’s no reason to see why that trend won’t continue.
Deceiver is the band’s most relentlessly aggressive album since 2002’s Versus The World, and continues their long tradition of draping the material in the violent, vivid lore of Norse mythology – all of which is driven home by the throaty roar of frontman Johan Hegg.
On the phone from Sweden, Hegg spoke of Amon Amarth’s signature, yet never static, sound, their gradual conquest of the American market and, of all things, half-term Alaska Governor/failed vice presidential candidate and professional – if often ill-informed – provocateur Sarah Palin.
AMON AMARTH unveils the first of their special three-part mini documentary titled Forging Mjölnir. Filmed and directed by Luke Daley (http://makezure.com), the up-close-and-personal clip — which includes stunning black and white nature footage and Norse artwork — celebrates the imminent release of the band’s ninth studio offering, Deceiver of the Gods.
Watch the six-and-a-half minute segment where vocalist Johan Hegg and bassist Ted Lundström elaborate on the mythological themes found within their latest epic via the band’s microsite at http://deceiver.amonamarth.com
Not many bands can claim their ninth album as the most powerful, dynamic, and plainly aggressive of their career, but then AMON AMARTH have consistently upped their game with every successive release. Having exploded onto the Swedish melodic death metal scene with 1998’s Once Sent from the Golden Hall, every album has arrived bursting at the seams with power, melody and immersive storytelling centered around the richness of Norse mythology. Deceiver of the Gods captures the quintet at the peak of their powers. “Every time we start working on new music we begin with the idea that we’re going to write the best album ever,” Hegg states. “We knew we wanted a more aggressive, live feeling to this record but there’s no formula behind what we do. We just try to write something that takes us a step further than the last record, and is something that will excite us and our fans. Deceiver Of The Gods is the result.”
Melodic death metal heroes AMON AMARTH are pleased to unveil the details of their ninth studio album. Titled Deceiver of the Gods, the epic offering was recorded at Backstage Studios in Derbyshire, UK, and produced, mixed and mastered by Andy Sneap (Opeth, Megadeth, Exodus, Arch Enemy, Killswitch Engage). The cover art was, once again, completed by Tom Thiel, and depicts a mythical battle between the Norse Gods Loki & Thor. Fans will also recognize a special appearance on this album with Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass) providing guest vocals for eighth song, “Hel.”Deceiver of the Gods will be released in North America via Metal Blade Records June 25th, in Europe June 21st/24th and Japan on June 26th.
Comments vocalist Johan Hegg: “We feel very excited about this new album, and personally I feel that Deceiver of the Gods is the strongest album we’ve ever done. By far! I’m confident that all our fans will enjoy this punch-in-the-face-of-a-record!
Opening title track and first single, “Deceiver of the Gods” is currently streaming at the band’s official Metal Blade page: http://www.metalblade.
Swedish death metallers AMON AMARTH have issued the following year-end update:
“We want to thank everyone that has supported and helped us in 2012.
“2013 will be another intense year for AMON AMARTH, and looks like it will be slightly unpredictable and mischievous…
“We’ve just finished writing all the songs for the next full-length album, and we’re ready to enter the studio to start recording them in the New Year.”
AMON AMARTH has tapped British producer Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, EXODUS, MACHINE HEAD, ARCH ENEMY, ACCEPT) to helm the band’s next studio album, tentatively due in June 2013 via Metal Blade Records.
Regarding AMON AMARTH’s decision to work with Sneap after utilizing Jens Bogren for the band’s last three studio efforts (2006’s “With Oden On Our Side”, 2008’s “Twilight Of The Thunder God” and 2011’s “Surtur Rising”), AMON AMARTH guitarist Olavi Mikkonen told Decibel magazine, “We were looking for a change, and Andy has been in our thoughts for some years now. After meeting with him, we felt a good connection. We think this is going to be a ripper.”
AMON AMARTH’s eighth studio album, “Surtur Rising”, sold around 15,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 34 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous CD, “Twilight of the Thunder God”, opened with more than 11,000 copies back in 2008 to land at No. 48.

Melodic death metal that is not poppy, nor influenced by folk music though the lyrics deal with Norse mythology and Viking themes. Amon Amarth from Stockholm have walked their own path on their way to becoming one of the most succesful death metal-bands of our time. They formed as early as 1992 and got their first minor breakthrough with their lauded fourth album ”Versus the world” (2002), where their sound for the first time was dominated by heaviness rather than speed. From that point, Amon Amarth earned increasingly greater success with albums like ”With Oden on our side” (2006), ”Twilight of the thunder god” (2008) and ”Surtur rising” (2011). Powerful guitar work, a relentless rhythm section and grandiose achievements from Johan Hegg, a frontman who both looks and sounds as if he was was born to perform in a band like this – a combination that has made Amon Amarth international metal stars.
Many, many more bands – big and small, and from most rock/metal sub genres – are still to be confirmed, so expect more announcements soon.
Sweden Rock Festival is taking place in Sölvesborg, southern Sweden on June 5-8 2013. Tickets will be made available this Tuesday, September 25th, at 9pm.
