In promotion of his current sophomore album release “Brand New Revolution”, Ozzy Osbourne / FIREWIND guitarist GUS G. has just wrapped up a massive touring run, both supporting Kamelot and then successfully hosting guitar clinics all over Europe.
GUS G. is launching a new promotional clip for the album track “What Lies Below”, which features Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) on vocals. The stunning video-clip was once again shot by longtime visual design partner / director Patric Ullaeus (In Flames, Arch Enemy, Within Temptation, etc.) and can be seen here: https://youtu.be/kS-PLcAvuhk
In addition to further solo shows throughout the end of this year, GUS G. has now also revealed that his long-running melodic Metal band FIREWIND is finally returning to the spotlight with a new singer and selected live-activity in 2016. Henning Basse (Metalium / Sons Of Seasons), who had already toured with FIREWIND on various continents in 2007 as well as most recently with GUS G.’s solo-band, has been announced as new permanent singer for FIREWIND and will therefore be appearing on the band’s upcoming performances at the 70000 Tons Of Metal Cruise as well as Graspop Metal Meeting next year.
On the sixth night of their tour Amaranthe arrived in the UK to play the Islington Academy in London. After sound check Metal Rules spoke to Jake E (vocals), Elize (vocals) and Olof (guitar and keys) to inquire about how they were finding the tour so far.
Watch the video to hear more about how the band developed with three vocalists, their song writing process, and the ideas behind the video ‘Drop Dead Cynical’ from their most recent album Massive Addictive.
Before tonight’s show gets under way both Photographer Graham Hilling and I are joined with two of the three vocalists from the highly esteemed European Metal outfit Amaranthe to learn more about their ever growing international success and interesting fusion of sounds they bring to the Metal scene.
TIMO TOLKKI’S AVALON to release sophomore album “Angels of the Apocalypse” with an amazing cast of singers ! Out in May on Frontiers
Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of TIMO TOLKKI’S AVALON sophomore album, “Angels of the Apocalypse” on May 16th in Europe and May 20th in North America.
Following the release of the debut album “The Land of New Hope”, the “Metal Opera” was met with critical and fan acclaim, entering the national album charts in seven European countries, including a top 10 entry in Tolkki’s home country, Finland. In August 2013, Tolkki flew to Greece to seek the right inspiration for the follow-up album and upon his return he managed to develop a sound that is even more grandiose and symphonic and yet heavier and darker in direction as compared to the debut album. “In August 2012 I planned to release a Metal Opera that had to be a trilogy. I am following a specific storyboard in a musical format and this time the musical direction is heavier and darker than the previous Avalon” says Tolkki. ”This was deliberate since the Apocalyptic scenes described in the lyrics demanded that”.
As for the players on the album, Tolkki finally managed to reunite the legendary STRATOVARIUS “Dreamspace” lineup, calling Antti Ikonen and Tuomo Lassila to play keyboards and drums respectively. “It was really nice and brought good vibes and freshness to the album,” tells Timo. “Definitely the right move.”
The amazing cast of vocalists appearing this time includes NIGHTWISH singer Floor Jansen – who takes care of the lead vocals on the first single “Design The Century” – along with Simone Simons (EPICA), Fabio Lione (RHAPSODY OF FIRE), David DeFeis (VIRGIN STEELE), Zachary Stevens (ex-SAVATAGE, CIRCLE II CIRCLE), plus Elize Ryd (AMARANTHE) – who appears again after contributing to the first album – and the stunning Chilean singer Caterina Nix, who is working on her debut album which is also produced by Tolkki. “Some songs were written with a specific singer in mind, while for some others I decided based on the knowledge that I had on how he or she would perform. I am particularly happy of how this record sounds especially two songs You’ll Bleed Forever and the 10 minute title track are among my favourite ever”, says Tolkki.
Once again the stunning artwork is provided by the French artist Stanis W. Decker and the first pressing of the physical edition will be available in a glossy digipak.

TUSKA AFTERPARTY FEAT. MARKY RAMONE’S BLITZKRIEG REVIEW BY CHRISTER USENIUS
The Tuska Open Air Festival is definitely a real metal festival institution amongst all other metal festivals in Europe. This current area, Suvilahti, almost located in the heart of Helsinki, only a few kilometers away from the downtown, is the new home for Tuska for the second time. Suvilahti is more like an industrial environment with burning and hot asphalt underfoot. Tuska faced a serious battle to pull the audience as another festival named Rock The Beach was arranged on the same weekend in the Helsinki area. The line-up of that festival mostly pulled the normal radio friendly audience whereas the die-hard metal freaks arrived at the Tuska Open Air Festival. Tuska however managed to pull about 25.000 visitors during the weekend. That was pretty good as the line-up did look good, not that tempting to pull a mainstream audience.
Nightwish and Testament, and of course the legendary Danish King Diamond were headliners, but of course a few cult metal bands like Bolt Thrower, Lama, had to be witnessed. The festival was an nice success although the event wasn’t sold out. Metal-Rules.com was present to check out a lot of bands and enjoy the metal in different forms.
