 Introduction

Calgary Metal Fest (CMF) started out as a two day event in 2012 put on by Nate Renaud to celebrate his birthday and this year it expanded into a five day party. Along with the expansion of the fest Renaud has expanded his repertoire and is now running shows and this event under his company Big Nate Productions.  This year’s event started out with a free kickoff party at the Ship and Anchor, three nights of line-ups at Dicken’s Pub and Vern’s Tavern and ended with an impromptu hangover party at Dicken’s pub – the idea for which was drunkenly conceived in a kitchen by organizers and bands partying late into what was supposed to be the final day of the festival. Unlike last year there was no all ages venue, all five nights being 18+ shows.

The MC of this year’s CMF was James Arsenian aka Big James, known for his vocal work in Endast and Exes for Eyes and his YouTube show “The Big James Morning Show”.  Big James was an excellent choice as shown by his gregarious and witty personality. He did his research on bands and was able to help promote upcoming tours and albums when he introduced the bands.

On the final night of the festival there were prizes auctioned off between bands Renaud joined Big James on stage to auction off tickets to some western Canadian festivals like Farmegeddon and Armstrong Metal Fest. The big prize was the massive poster with the CMF logo, band logos and signatures of bands and, as requested by the winner, fans. This year $1400 was raised for the Make a Wish Southern Alberta charity. We have to say thank you to Big James for giving us the best photo of the festival (featured above after the title) during the auctions between bands.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS Headlining Dates Begin; Nonstop Touring For Entire First Quarter Of 2012 Confirmed

December 13th, 2011

Having just completed a massive thirty-six date North American tour supporting Mayhem, the ABIGAIL WIILIAMS  touring machine will continue on the road this week for six headlining dates, beginning in Wilmington, Delaware tonight. Taking only a few weeks off after this run of dates, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS hit the road on another set of headlining performances on their way to provide direct support for Dark Funeral’s North American assault engulfing all of February, immediately followed by a full tour with Deicide through the end of March! A full list of tour dates is posted below.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS‘ massive ongoing tour schedule is to pummel audiences with new material from the band’s new album, Becoming. Confirmed for release in North America on January 24, 2012 — once again on Candlelight Records — the band’s third full-length Becoming is already stirring interest in the metal media; its organic, churning tracks offering some stark contrast to previous ABIGAIL WILLIAMS releases. The first single from Becoming, “Ascension Sickness,” in its second week at radio has already broken the top 20 on CMJ (on a 11-minute single!). The track continues to get heavy requests and plays nationwide as the track continues to infect the masses. Stream “Ascension Sickness” right here.

Clocking in at nearly an hour in length, Becoming ushers in a provocative new chapter for the adventurous band. Containing six vast tracks, truly the band’s most expressive and complicated to date, Becoming was recorded in various warehouses throughout Los Angeles, with the lineup for the album including returning guitarist Ian Jekelis, studio drummer Zach Gibson (ex-The Black Dahlia Murder) and as always, vocalist/guitarist Ken Sorceron, who handled all mixing, mastering, production and engineering duties. View the cover art by infamous graphic artist Metastazis (Morbid Angel, Watain, Ulver, Nachtmystium, etc.) and more at this location. Preorders for the record are available from Candlelight.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS: Writing Nearly Complete On New Album

July 25th, 2011

European Tour Wrap-Up And Upcoming Stateside Dates Announced

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS has nearly completed the writing phase on material that is planned for the band’s new album, expected for release in early 2012. Feverishly working since their return from their most recent European tour, the band is looking forward to testing out some of the new songs later next month when they return to stateside venues for a string of dates that is set to begin August 25 in Las Vegas and conclude when the band performs alongside Morbid Angel in Los Angeles on September 23.

The band’s European tour was their first since 2009. The tour took ABIGAIL WILLIAMS through twelve countries in a quick 21 days. Band leader Sorceron notes, “The shows were excellent. We had a great time with our friends in Iskald and Thulcandra and hope we can join them again in the future. A big thanks to everyone who came out to the shows; we really appreciate your support. The upcoming dates have us headlining in the west including the Rocky Mountain Goat Roast; we are co-headlining the fest with Misery Index. The Scottsdale show has us sharing the stage once more with ex-hometown friends Vehemence and Landmine Marathon. And what more can I say about playing with Morbid Angel other than how awesome it will be to finally share the stage with a band we grew up listening to?”

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS’ still untitled third album is set to be recorded in September. Sorceron says, “the new material is a continuation of our last album but with more atmosphere and far more extreme tempos.  We are adding back some of the symphonic elements that were on In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns album but without sacrificing any of  the edge that was on In the Absence of Light. So far we are really happy with everything.”

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS confirmed headlining dates:

8/25/2011 Yayo’s – Las Vegas, NV

8/26/2011 Chaser’s – Scottsdale, AZ

8/27/2011 Goat Roast Fest – Greeley, CO

8/28/2011 Club Expose – Salt Lake City, UT

8/29/2011 Fat Cat – Modesto, CA

8/30/2011 105 Pioneer – Santa Cruz, CA

9/02/2011 Metaphor Café – Escondido, CA

9/03/2011 Cobalt Café – Canoga Park, CA

As previously announced, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS will also tour with Mayhem, Keep of Kalessin, and Hate beginning November 2.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS’ latest album In The Absence Of Light was released late September 2010.  Recorded at Conquistador Studios in Cleveland and mixed by Peter Tagtgren (Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Celtic Frost) at Black Lounge Studios in Sweden, the album presents founder/vocalist/guitarist Sorceron with guitarist Ian Jekelis and drummer Ken Bedene. The album’s eight songs contain far more urgency then the band’s previous material, cutting down on synth and keyboards without depleting their crushing atmospheric capabilities, while adding a more brutal, sinister edge to their attack. In the Absence of Light followed the band’s popular full length debut, In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns (2008), and groundbreaking Legend EP (2006). All are available in stores and via I-Tunes now.

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS Premiere New Song From Forthcoming Album

August 17th, 2010

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS have posted the song “Final Destiny of the Gods,” the first new song from their anticipated second album In the Absence of Light to their official MySpace page. Fans can have their first listen by visiting: http://www.myspace.com/abigailwilliams.

Recorded at Conquistador Studios in Cleveland, Ohio, In the Absence of Light was mixed by Peter Tagtgren (Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Celtic Frost) and features artwork by Farron Kerzner (Nachtmystium, Lightning Swords of Death). The album presents new band members, guitarist Ian Jekelis and drummer Ken Bedene, alongside vocalist/guitarist Sorceron.

Several weeks ago the band announced the first tour in support of the album. Kicking of September 29, the band will perform alongside Immolation, Vader with Lecherous Nocturne and Pathology for four weeks. Confirmed dates are below. Tickets are on sale now.

Formed in 2005, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS have been called “a buzz band,” and “a band to watch.” They have endured more than their fair share of opposition, including revolving door member changes and in 2007 altogether disbanding. But through it all, the core of the band has kept a level head, a steady eye, and an unbridled passion for what they do. The band’s 2006 Legend EP and 2008 debut, In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns (produced by James Murphy and featuring Emperor drummer Trym Torson) have now sold a combined 35,000 in the US. The band has toured exhaustively including their most recent West Coast headlining dates.

Recorded at Conquistador Studios in Cleveland, Ohio, the album was mixed by Peter Tagtgren (Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Celtic Frost) and features artwork by Farron Kerzner (Nachtmystium, Lightning Swords of Death).

In The Absence of Light is true to the rules of black metal. The vocals are harsh and shrill, sounding like the product of a lacerated larynx. Guitars buzz, rip and roar alongside articulate, rapid licks and blazing solos. Drums slam and crash like exploding mortar shells, whether battering with blast beats, double-bass rolls or syncopated snare hits. And there is just the right amount of haunting keyboard washes, a noted difference to the band’s previous album In The Shadow of a Thousand Suns. Vocalist/guitarist Sorceron notes, “There is a lot less keyboards on the new songs. I like keyboards, but before we started this record we decided to get rid of a lot of them because we wanted to do something different.”

The album presents new band members, guitarist Ian Jekelis and drummer Ken Bedene. Joining Sorceron after ABIGAIL WILLIAMS’ final tour in support of In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns last fall, the trio quickly got to work writing material that would become In the Absence of Light. The album’s eight songs contain far more urgency then the band’s previous material; songs written exclusively by Sorceron.

“We let ourselves have much more room with writing this album, kind of a more open, free environment than any we have employed before,” reveals Sorceron. “We literally constructed the songs as we went. Ken would be in the drum room and Ian and I would be in the control room and we just played for hours. We would listen back and pick out what we thought was good and we put songs together. We recorded everything with much more ease and I think it has helped in capturing a very honest vibe.”
