INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA
Black Star Riders is a new “all-star” band that formed in late 2012. The band got started when members of the most recent line-up of Thin Lizzy decided to record new material, but they choose not to release it under the Thin Lizzy name. The band now consists of vocalist/guitarist Ricky Warwick (the Almighty), bassist Marco Mendoza (ex-Whitesnake, Blue Murder), and guitarists Damon Johnson (ex-Alice Cooper, Brother Cane) and Scott Gorham who’s the only remaining member from Thin Lizzy’s classic line-up. The original Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey and longtime keyboardist Darren Wharton decided not to take part of this new band and Downey was then replaced by Jimmy DeGrasso (ex-Y&T, Megadeth, Alice Cooper). The band released its highly acclaimed debut album ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE on May 2013 and since they’ve been extremely busy touring act across the world. Black Star Riders played its first show in Finland on last November. Vocalist Ricky Warwick sat down with us in backstage of club Virgin Oil Co and we discussed about the new album, creation process of new songs, the future of Black Star Riders and Thin Lizzy, possibility of the Almighty reunion and various other topics. Read on!

If you know of Sister you probably either love or hate them. Even if you haven’t heard of them you probably have an opinion anyway. That’s the way it’s been since the beginning. On the last night of their biggest year of touring yet, Sister are a band comfortable with such controversy. They just wanna do their thing – and that’s performing and writing the music they want to hear. Not so different to any other band then. And music like that will always find an audience.
Pre-show, pre-make up, we sit down with these not-so-twisted foursome to chat about the tour, the album, the Sister way, and naked pigmen….
Category VI is proud to announce the release of their debut album FIREBORN. The album is available now from iTunes and other digital platforms.
Discussing the album, the band said, “It’s been a year in the making and finally our album has been set free! We feel that FIREBORN covers many metallic bases with elements of melodic metal, traditional metal, power metal, and even some thrash – all qualities which makes our music appealing to fans of several styles of metal.”
Featuring over 50mins of music, FIREBORN was engineered and mixed by Rick Hollett. In mid November 2013, Category VI unveiled a lyric video for their new song “Silence Befalls The Crowd” from FIREBORN which can bee seen below. The band will be announcing plans for an album release show in early 2014.
FIREBORN Track Listing:
2. Real Lies
3. Silence Befalls The Crowd
4. The Raven
6. Beginning of the End
7. Descent of the King
8. Wasting Away

There’s a long queue out the front of the Garage tonight. It looks to be a good one. Then you clock the line is for Girlschool, installed in the main venue, whilst at the door for Sister, upstairs, feet are a bit more thin on the ground. Sadly missing as well is our photographer, who taken severely ill can’t be in attendance. Shall we just go home now – not likely. For one, despite the faux-female name and the make-up, Sister are four dudes from Sweden, and are as cool as cucumbers in their home climate. For another, they’re finishing a mammoth year of touring and one quiet door won’t do much to dent that.
But most of all, Sister just don’t give a fuck about such things. That’s not the Sister way.

Celebrating past legends is something the metal scene has always hung onto. Who can miss the Dimebag tributes every year, the Dio stage at Bloodstock and the Jeff Hanneman tribute is surely not too far off. One that you rarely hear of though is pioneer and father of death metal Chuck Schuldiner. Aiming to change this are three of his old band members who joined him at during his career. Death to All is a celebration of the life of this influential musician by keeping alive his work from over the years.
“Yeah! All lyrics done and only one more vocal to record. Mixing makes descend progress. Friday it’s time for the bakings, some solo voices of Jan and all his second harmonies. Looking so damned forward to finish and listen to all songs with my favorite headphones and a beer!!”
“Hey Folks, heavy mixing is happening at good old powerhouse putting all the work of the past months together into single stereo files. Backing vocals and choirs still need to be recorded and assembled in, but it sounds already damned good \m/. Can’t wait myself to listen to the finished album with all the songs in the optimal running order and with full sound. Ok, back to work cause time’s running shorter than you think
Best, Piet & the boys”

In the deep forests of Sweden – a long trip into the southern countryside and in the small village of Linneryd – ENTRAILS guitarist Jimmy Lundqvist has now resurrected that old converted woodshed that ENTRAILS used as rehearsal room in the 90′s. Behind these walls he was making some nasty riffs during the early 90′s until the band was put to sleep.
It has now become a studio/rehearsal room for the band where they can record all their music including the drums instead of hiring a studio to record some drums. But it doesn’t end there; when Jimmy was done with the studio he got so much inspiration that he basically locked himself in and did a bunch of new tunes in only a few days. Comments Lundqvist: “These walls have some cool memories and bring me in the mood to create, so it was a good decision to renovate that room and make it a studio combined with a rehearsal room. It took me some weeks during the summer to fix the room and of course I had friends helping me until it was done. Finally we have our own studio which will help us a lot in being even more creative”.
Spanish festival RIPOLLET ROCK has set 29th August 2014 as the date of the next edition, the number 22.
The festival took place in Ripollet, a small city 15 kilometers far from Barcelona. It’s free-entrance and last year, more than 6000 people attended the event, where Masterplan, Zenobia, Rising, Aggression and El Rey de espaldas where playing.

Two promotional videos for the 2014 Metal All-Stars tour featuring former MEGADETH drummer Nick Menza can be viewed below.
Menza: I’m totally pumped and honored to get the opportunity of sharing the stage with some of the largest and legendary voices in heavy metal. It’s definitely going to be a interesting and unique tour, something European and South American fans don’t want to miss and I’m hoping it hits the states.
The Metal All-stars tour will feature “some of the biggest contributors to the heavy metal genre along with some of the most technical musicians in the industry,” according to a press release.
