Metal Alliance Tour 2014

On April 29, 2014 the Metal Alliance Tour rolled into Calgary Alta. for a very early show. The venue at the University of Calgary, MacEwan Hall, had a very early curfew for the show and so doors were opened at 5pm with the first band on at 5:45pm. The early start time unfortunately reduced the number of attendees, as did the lack of Inquisition on bill who were unable to cross the border. The three more well-known acts on the bill, Goatwhore, 1349 and Behemoth have played packed venues in Calgary previously. Due to the size of the hall and the division between the beer gardens at the back of the room and the all age’s section in front of the stage, the crowd looked a little thin.

It was a slow start when Black Crown Initiate came on stage. There were very few people in the venue and no line up outside because of the early start time. A few more people trickled in over the course of the set but it was a very noticeably small crowd. Their technical death metal infused with progressive influences was enjoyed by the audience, and a sizable amount of people moved up towards the stage to show their appreciation of the music. The songs flowed seamlessly from an instrumental introspective intro into their heavier catalogue.

Louisiana’s Goatwhore always gets a good response in Calgary, filling larger bar sized venues with raucous fans. Although there were considerably more people for Goatwhore’s set, it still looked like small crowd due to the room size. Frontman Ben Falgoust demands the audience’s response with his intense stage presence as he prowls around the stage striking epic poses and headbanging in between ferocious vocals.  Sammy Duet shredded through driving riffs and razor sharp solos. Bassist James Harvey was an indomitable presence as he delivered tight bass lines and Zack Simmons was menacing behind his drum kit. The set sampled from the bands previous albums with songs like “The All Destroying”, “When Steel and Bone Meet”, along with a new tune from the upcoming album Constricting Rage of the Merciless [Metal Blade Records, 2014] called “Baring Teeth For Revolt”. The set finished with favorites that really got the crowd moving “Alchemy of the Black Sun Cult” and “Apocalyptic Havok”.

Norway’s 1349 brought a more malicious atmosphere to the line-up. The stage was awash in red as the band took the stage. Vocalist Ravn was an intimidating force, holding up gauntleted fists to crowd to emphasize his venomous vocals.  Jon Rice (ex-Job For A Cowboy) was filling in once again on drum for Frost and did an excellent job with the relentless drum beats. “Sculptor of Flesh” started off the set and after a few songs the band gave the crowd a taste of upcoming album with “Slaves” which seemed well liked by the crowd.  They finished off with “When I was Flesh” and “Atomic Chapel”.

Behemoth never fails at putting a performance that shows thought put into every detail. From costumes and backdrops and sets, to stage presence and character, it all holds the audience enthralled. Whether or not you are a fan of their newest offering the Satanist [Nuclear Blast, 2014], which was heavily featured in the set list, the performance delivered entertained and engaged. The band strode on stage with Nergal following last, ceremoniously walking out with fire torches held in both hands. Nergal stood with his back to the audience, torches crossed, and the anticipation was built up until they launched into “Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel”. Orion was towering and ominous with his bass. Inferno pounded into his drums, though was mostly hidden behind his kit for the majority of the set. Seth shredded on his guitar with Nergal and stalked around the stage.  Behemoth gave fans some older favorites like “Conquer All”, “Christians to the Lions”, and “Chant for Eschaton 2000” mixed in with the new, including the title track from The Satanist. Their excellently executed set ended with “O Father, O Satan, O Sun” and the band donned horned masks to finish with a very evil atmosphere.

Hellfest – Clisson France

Hellfest – Clisson France

17-18-19 June 2011

Hellfest arrives for its 5th edition. The French festival has been growing incredibly huge and very fast. This year it traditional location in the sport facilities of Clisson couldn’t take anymore of the mass of metalheads coming to this small part of France from all over the world.

This year’s crowd-moving, main acts where none less than Rob Zombie, Scorpions, Ozzy, and Judas Priest, with tons of other goodies in between. An excellent line-up as usual, as it’s part of the winning formula that gave success to the organizers of this event, nowadays already one of the biggest metal fests in the European summer.

The weather won’t be the most pleasant ever, but on the other hand it could have been way worse than just some strong wind and rain here and there, and the sun has been lighting the fields from time to time, still giving the impression to be in summer, after all. But as this festival is amazingly fun if you are among the beer-drinking hellraisers in the audience, you can somehow understand the “hell” part when you have to keep up with the insanely long queues to get into the photo pit, along with running all over the festival area from stage to stage, trying not to fall over some boozer laying on the ground. Oh well… running is good for your health!

1349 To Return to North America in October

August 4th, 2010

Norway’s 1349 will bring it’s sonic plague back to North America in October for a co-headline tour with Triptykon, entitled, “Weltenbrand World Tour.” Chicago’s Yakuza will also  appear on the bill. This will be their second trek on this side of the Atlantic in support of their album, “Demonoir,” which was released in April on Prosthetic Records in North America. That last tour was cut short due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland and visa issues.

All of the band’s scheduled dates are:
8/6            Wacken, Germany- Wacken Open Air Festival
8/13            Oslo, Norway- Middelaiderparken
8/19            Dinkelsbulh, Germany- Summer Breeze Festival
10/6            New York City, NY- Gramercy Theatre #
10/7            Boston, MA- The Middle East Downstairs #
10/8            Baltimore, MD- Otto Bar #
10/9            Philadelphia, PA- Polaris #
10/10            Montreal, CA- Les Foufunes Electriques #
10/11            Toronto, CA- Opera House #
10/13            Cleveland, OH- Grog Shop #
10/14            Pittsburgh, PA- Mr. Small’s Theatre #
10/15            Detroit, MI- Majestic Theatre #
10/16            Chicago, IL- Bottom Lounge #
10/17            St. Paul, MN- Station 4 #
10/19            Denver, CO- The Marquis Theatre #
10/21            Seattle, WA- El Corazon #
10/22            Portland, OR- Hawthorne Theatre #
10/23            San Francisco, CA- Slims #
10/24            Los Angeles, CA- El Rey Theatre #
10/25            Tucson, AZ- The Marquee #
10/27            Tulsa, OK- The Marquee #
10/28            Ft. Worth, TX- Ridglea Theatre #
10/29            Austin, TX- Emo’s Outside #
10/30            Houston, TX- The Warsaw #
# w/ Triptykon, Yakuza

The band released the following statement: “2010 is a very special year for 1349. This is the year that saw the release of our pinnacle album ‘Demonoir,” into which we have channeled the darkest and fiercest contents of our souls and given it an aural form. As the album was released, the band was already on American soil doing the first tour of the touring cycle as main support for Cannibal Corpse. We were obviously rather excited about how the songs would feel and sound live and thus of the crowd’s reaction to the new material, but it turned out to work eminently. It felt fabulous! Furthermore, it became clear to us that we had to follow up what we had begun and go back to the States and play a headliner tour in the fall. This intent has turned into cold reality as we now embark on a co-headliner tour with Triptykon.

“Many of you are familiar with 1349′s bonds to the creative mastermind Tom G. Warrior, and for us it’s like pieces of a puzzle that fall into place as we now go on tour with Triptykon on their first journey to the U.S. We talk about two mighty forces that here will be joined; in 1349 we see it as nothing short of a great achievement that we could make it happen. We can promise you that 1349 will feed off this great happening, and we boldly state that every show on this Weltenbrand tour will be a triumph! We look STRONGLY forward to share some truly magical moments with our American fans on this tour, and judging from  the reception we got on our short-but-sweet tour with CC this spring (hails!), this is gonna be A HELL OF A RIDE.

“To complete the line-up of this legendary 1349/Triptykon-tour, we have invited the splendid weirdos Yakuza as our special guests. “Come feel the Fire”…as Overkill would have said.”

Limited edition picture discs of “Demonoir” are still available through the Prosthetic Web-store. (http://store.prostheticrecords.com/index.php/vinyl/1349-demonoir-pic-lp.html)

Masters Of Metal – Klubi Tampere Finland

June 4th, 2010

banner.JPG¨

Masters of Metal is another addition to the map of the Finnish metal festivals. Originally the event was planned to be carried out in a bigger venue. However, because of the unexpected low ticket sales the whole MOM event was switched to a smaller venue and a couple of bands got dropped from the bill. However the line-up looked pretty solid which should have drawn more people to the event. After all approximately 300 people crawled out to the MOM event. Although the line-up looked all in all solid, but as for the general arrangements of the event, the roadie and break time between each bands was occasionally quite insanely long. That definitely bugged some people off even though the beer was cold and metal ruled. But even though the festival is a small indoor one, if the people of the fest believes in the future of the fest, then we can expect to have another MOM event in the next year.

South By Southwest (SXSW) 2008

April 8th, 2008

SXSW

By Robert Williams

South By Southwest (SXSW) is an annual music and film conference/festival held yearly in beautiful Austin, Texas. In the 21 years of its existence, SXSW has served as a launching pad for many unknown bands turned media darlings overnight. For one week in the month of March each year bands from all over the world gather in downtown Austin and showcase their music, their craft, for record executives, media big wigs, and most importantly in my opinion, music lovers!

This all sounds like a splendid and festive occasion with the exception of one detail. SXSW has almost exclusively all but overlooked metal and its many subgenres for its entire existence.

Now I won’t lie. In years past I have seen some cool showcases. Century Media and Relapse usually cart their bands into town, and scattered about my 12 year tenure in Austin I have seen some notable showcases featuring among others In Extremo, Sol Evil, Children Of Bodom, and Grey Skies Fallen. But when 1,400 bands come to town for one week in March each year, you would hope at least, I don’t know, 50-100 of them would be awesome heavy metal, right?

Well, this year Austin got a fair amount of killer metal. Kicking things off on Wednesday, the 12th I had the pleasure of witnessing my first Municipal Waste concert. A day later I got off of work early and headed downtown with some friends and caught a showcase featuring Enslaved, Mixhell, Napalm Death, High On Fire, and the mighty Motorhead.

Lastly, I witnessed the “It’s Grim Up North” showcase featuring Sabaton, 1349 and Enslaved. I partied like a true champion, saw some really, really good performances and got some really solid interviews. Read on metal faithful and I shall guide you through these conversations in steel conducted in my homeland of Austin….Let’s start at the beginning….

Wacken 2007

October 9th, 2007

Wacken Open Air 2007

Wacken is a blessed mecca of the whole metal world. Again this year it was entirely sold out when ten thousands of metal manics travelled from all around the world to gather and witness plenty of ass kicking bands. The weather forecast for Wacken didn’t look that promising. The chaotic and muddy mess caused by long and heavy rains rampaged the ground during the whole summer. The  festival often provides a survival test to every visitor with its mud and crap. But but gods of metal had seen the light and blessed the whole three day metal inferno with tremendous extreme heat and a sunny weekend. Things could not be better…sun, metal and beer. That combination is nothing but an utter perfect way to enjoy the metallic mayhem at Wacken.

As usual, the true metal commando team from Metal-Rules.Com was there again witnessing a helluva lot of great bands and above all an unexpected huge fire in the main area. Feel, see and enjoy this article.
