Loud music. Pornography. Burning shit to the ground. These are a few of Hesher’s favorite things, and all to the soundtrack of Metallica and Motorhead. And they are what Hesher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) brings into the lives of TJ (Devon Brochu) and his father Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he takes up residence in the garage uninvited. Grief stricken by the loss of TJ’s mother in a car accident, Paul can’t muster the strength to evict the strange squatter and soon the long-haired, tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher’s anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and helps them embrace life once more.

The Music of Hesher:

-The Shortest Straw: Metallica

-Fight Fire with Fire: Metallica

-Anesthesia: Metallica

-Battery: Metallica

-Motorbreath: Metallica

-Rock Out: Motorhead

-A Teenager in Love: Dion & the Belmonts

-The End of Time: The Hit Crew

-Deeply: Buddy Stuart

Featuring an all-star award-winning cast, Lionsgate debuts Hesher on DVD, Blu-ray Disc, Digital Download and On Demand this September. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception) leads the dark comedy in the title role, an unconventional loner who is more interested in pyromania than finding a job. Also starring Rainn Wilson (TV’s “The Office”), Devon Brochu (In the Valley of Elah) and Oscar® winner Natalie Portman (Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Black Swan, 2010), this dark comedy meets fairy tale was a film festival favorite – an Official Selection of South by Southwest, and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2010. Hailed as a “delectably anarchic black comedy…refreshingly original” (New York Post), the film features the music of Metallica. Hesher, featuring deleted scenes, outtakes, cast and crew interviews, a sketch gallery and more, will be available on September 13th for the suggested retail price of $28.98 on DVD and $29.99 on Blu-ray Disc.

STEVE HUNTER – Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, David Lee Roth etc

STEVE HUNTER

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJALA

Steve “The Deacon” Hunter is an American guitarist best known for his collaborations with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed. Hunter is also well known about his long term association with record producer Bob Ezrin with whom they’ve been doing collaboration since the early 70’s. Hunter appeared on five classic Alice Cooper albums: BILLION DOLLAR BABIES, WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE, LACE AND WHISKEY and ALICE COOPER GOES TO HELL. Hunter, alongside with guitarist Dick Wagner, also appeared on the classic film ‘Welcome To My Nightmare’, which released on home video in 1976 and it featured the guitar battle between Hunter and Wagner. Both had played together in many different occasions before and after Alice Cooper including Lou Reed’s BERLIN and ROCK’N ROLL ANIMAL albums, Peter Gabriel’s solo debut and many more. Hunter quit working with Cooper in 1978 and since then the man has released several solo albums and worked with such names as Jack Bruce and David Lee Roth just to name a few in here. In March of 2011 Alice Cooper announced that Hunter would be returning to the band for the upcoming tour and brand new album entitled WELCOME 2 MY NIGHTMARE which is once again produced by Bob Ezrin.  Cooper’s latest NO MORE MR. NICE GUY tour reached Finland in early July and then we had a pleasure to talk with Mr. Hunter himself and hear the latest from Cooper’s camp as well as some great stories from the past as well.

Hammer Open Air – Lieto Finland

Hammer Open Air Festival 15-07-2011.jpg

Article and pictures by Arto Lehtinen

Hammer Open Air is basically a new festival on the map of Finnish summer festivals. The first Hammer Open Air festival was arranged last year and headlined by Pagan Altar, Grand Belial’s Key, Urfaust, Devil’s Blood and of course had tons of other killer names. The line-up of this year’s Hammer Open Air was pure cult from the beginning to the end. The long time occult black thrashers Absu out of Texas made the first ever visit to Finland and so did the gore death metal legends Autopsy out of San Francisco. In general, Hammer Open Air is a real authentic festival of the most extreme death/black bands for all the extreme black death metal worshippers. The festival ain’t any massive event although the event was completely sold-out. Over 1000 maniacs had arrived to testify a number of great bands. Here is the brief article of the Hammer Open Air festival.

Between The Buried And Me Announces Fall North American Headlining Tour

August 2nd, 2011
by EvilG

CRITICALLY REVERED PROG METAL BAND TO TOP BILL OF 2011 “SAINTS & SINNERS” TOUR

Globally celebrated progressive rock / cutting-edge metal innovators BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME (aka BTBAM) has announced a fall North American headlining tour in support of its new LP The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues. The award winning band will headline the 2011 “Saints & Sinners” Tour and launch the six week trek on 10/27 in Charlotte, NC. Support on the BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME tour will come from Animals as Leaders and TesseracT with tickets available for advance purchase now!

“It will be so exciting to get back out on the road and play some tunes for all our wonderful fans,” said BTBAM guitarist Paul Waggoner. “Our anticipation for this tour is massive and I hope that sentiment is shared by all the metal geeks out there. The bill is loaded with some of the most forward-thinking, virtuosic musicians in the genre and the audience can expect to hear all 12 notes in every humanly audible octave many times during the course of the evening!”

Released on April 12 via Metal Blade Records, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is a three-song strong, 30 minute tour de force of modern heavy music. Produced and engineered by the Grammy award–winning David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, King Crimson, Dream Theater, etc.) with BTBAM, the record soared to #54 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in its first week of release while landing the #5 spot on the Hard Music chart, and #8 on the Independent Albums chart in its first week of release. The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues also debuted in Canada charting at #62 on the Top 200 Current chart, #6 on the Hard chart, and #14 on the Independent chart.

“The response to the new album has been absolutely amazing!”, commented BTBAM’s Tommy Rogers. “It’s always a rewarding experience to hear excitement about the music we create. These days it’s hard to judge what people think of new music, and the feedback on tour and the Internet has really motivated us to create an even more bad ass record for the second part of ‘The Parallax’. See you all on tour!”

The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues represents BTBAM’s musical and conceptual masterwork; the record showcases both the quintet’s vivid execution and ambitious vision. The otherworldly conceptual thread linking each of the songs is mobilized around two human characters that live in different planes of existence and are separated by millions of light years, each confronted with similar personal issues. Subsequently, both characters make decisions that will change their lives, and perhaps the course of the universe, forever. Musically, the release presents aura-rich atmospheres rife with roaring volumes, corrugated rhythms and trance-inducing intricacies. Cerebral and visceral, soft and heavy, melodic and abrasive, tender and brutal, familiar and strange and taut yet sprawling and epic, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME has crafted a sound that is musically sophisticated yet primal and a disc where every new passage leads to the culmination of an epic adventure.

About BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME:

Merging unparalleled musical bravery, prodigious musicianship, flawless execution and an angular landscape of forward thinking ideas, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME (aka BTBAM) reinvent the rock ‘n roll idiom while pleasing their harshest critics: themselves. Joining metal’s dexterity and progressive rock’s psychedelic, multi-layered experimentation, BTBAM (whose name was inspired by a line of lyrics from the Counting Crows song “Ghost Train”) create spine-tingling sound that contains visceral power, labyrinthine arrangement, mind-boggling melody and majestic beauty. The band has released five full-length LPs since its formation in 2000 including Between the Buried and Me (2002), The Silent Circus (2003), Alaska (2005), Colors (2007) and 2009’s critically acclaimed The Great Misdirect, which landed at #36 on the Billboard Top 200 in its first week of release. The group has showcased its live prowess via a slew of world headlining tours and has participated in major touring festivals including Ozzfest and the Radio Rebellion and Progressive Nation tours. Since its inception, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME has sold nearly one half million records and proven itself as a progressive rock pacesetter whose modernist clang pegs it as a paradigm to be followed and a yardstick by which other bands are measured.

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME features Tommy Rogers (vocals / keyboards), Paul Waggoner (guitar), Dustie Waring (guitar), Blake Richardson (drums / percussion) and Dan Briggs (bass).

SWEDENROCK 2011

August 1st, 2011
by Arto Lehtinen

swedenrock2011.jpg

Let Me Hear You Scream Sweden Rockkkk.Well the annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal Rules.com team is already into it’s 11th year!  The  2011 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock in the line-up. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide and the ticket price had risen a little bit. ver these 11 years of coverage, it has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The  weather once again showed positive and negative aspects like in 2010. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die!!!

Endless Main – Sea Of Lies

August 1st, 2011
by Erich Heintzelman

Reviewed: August 2011
Released: 2011, Unsigned
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Erich

Further testament to the world dominion of Metal, enter Endless Main from the metal Mecca of Slovakia. Throwing their ticket into the sweepstakes of power metal, the band formed in 2007 and set to honing their craft for this debut release. Clocking in at around the 30 minute mark with seven tracks, it is not your typical epic indulgence that a good percentage of power metal bands prefer to engage in.

The good news is that the band employs plenty of familiar traits of the genre including generous portions of keyboard synths, lots of kick drum, and fast as lightning riffs. The real attention grabber though is singer Michal Sepetka, who has that kind of distinctive voice that makes him easy to identify. For those of you that are old enough, try and recall the alternately repulsive/compelling vocals of Tom Baker of the band Cirith Ungol, and you get a sense of Sepetka’s style. Granted, he actually sings where, Baker kind of muddled through, but his tone, range, and style are sure to influence your acceptance or rejection of Endless Main. When he screams, yeah he nails it but something is off otherwise.

The opening instrumental intro, appropriately enough is titled “Intro” and it is fairly forgettable. But when “Home” kicks in, you get a hell of an aggressive riff being followed by some dueling and speedy keyboards. Suffice it to say, everybody can play their instruments, and the solos are melodic and with an enjoyable old school vibe. “Once Upon A Time” is probably the most classic sounding power metal track, with a rewarding chorus and Sepetka’s best vocals. Comparatively, there are elements of Rhapsody of Fire, Labyrinth, Bloodbound, and probably another dozen power metal bands with only the mould-breaking vocals of Sepetka to separate them from the pack.
All told, SEA OF LIES is a technical and somewhat predictable power metal album that still manages to latch on and compel further listens. No new ground is broken, but neither is it rendered infertile, as Endless Main has faithfully upheld the power metal standards with excellent production and instrumental prowess, but man…that voice. Recommended for all power metal fans.

Crown the Lost – Cold Pestilent Hope

August 1st, 2011
by Carlos Llanas

Reviewed: August 2011
Released: July, Gas Can Music
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Carlos Llanas

Hailing from Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, Crown the Lost is a ragtag group of metallers with one thing on their mind….METAL…and lots of it. There is no doubt that these gents have talent. Their Influences range from Metallica and Maiden, to Slayer and Killswitch Engage; It is definitely a strange mix. I have never been a huge fan of that style of modern metal (Killswitch,Hatebreed, etc), but there is something a little different about Crown the Lost. The melodies and good vocals are what makes their third studio effort \”Cold Pestilent Hope\” good.

The first thing that caught my attention about this debut album, was the production. It has a very nice clean sound and is quite enjoyable. They really took their time putting this together and It really shows. The Album kicks off with a melodic instrumental tune titled \”Pray for Death\”. It has good guitar work and a great feel overall. You can really hear some old school influences in the writing, and this stays constant through out the album. Not only does it have a good guitar sound and leads, but the album can turn into an all out thrashathon at times. A good Example is the song \”Separate Blood from Waste\”, from start to finish this song takes you on a fast-paced ride with well written riffs and pounding drums. Sometimes, the vocal structure even reminded me a bit of Helstar.

The problem I had with this album, has to be the constant breakdowns with the drums and guitars (That\’s the Killswitch Engage I was talking about earlier). A good example of this is the song \”Bloodsoaked Serenity\” It starts with a gritty thrash riff, but quickly slows down and completely shuns the momentum of the song. These are scattered throughout the album, and I believe that it keeps this album at being good…not great. As soon as the song(s) start to get killer…a breakdown appears. Why slow it down? I also noticed that the only time the vocals suffer is during these moments.

Overall, this is a good album and a good buy for those who like the Old School/New School blend. Shredding guitars, thrashing speeds at times, and good vocals all play part in the making of this album. The drums can be beastly too! there are some good blast beats sprinkled on the speed of the guitars and it sounds good and aggressive.

Evile – Five Serpent\’s Teeth

August 1st, 2011
by Carlos Llanas

Reviewed: August 2011
Released: 2011, Earache Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Carlos Llanas

British thrash attack Evile has been dishing out pounding thrash metal since 2004. The thrash quartet from Huddersfield, England have two good titles under their belt, \”Enter the Grave\” and \”Infected Nations\”. Their style and love for the genre make them a great addition to the thrash metal scene. Now, their much anticipated third studio effort \”Five Serpent\’s Teeth\” is on the horizon. Compared to their first two releases, \”Five Serpent\’s Teeth\” is little different. It has the same aggression, but there are some changes.

From the beginning to end, this album oozes Tom Araya/James Hetfield vocals and Metallica riffs. A good example on this album is the title track \”Five Serpent\’s Teeth\”. From the creepy intro to the speedy vicious riffing, this song screams thrash. The influences are very clear, without making them clones. You can even hear some Annihilator sounding riffs in the mix. The song \”In Memoriam\” takes a very different approach though. It was written in the memory of their late bass player Mike Alexander, and this was the bands first time writing a tune in that style. It is a slow and very arpeggio driven tune. A ballad in every sense, and It was greatly executed.

Like I mentioned earlier, This album is a little different than its predecessors. The cover art, for example, is a complete change. On their previous releases, the album covers have been intricate and very detailed. The art work they went with this time around was more \”MMA\”. It looks like it belongs on a TAPOUT shirt. At first glance, I thought \”Oh what the hell?!\”. It\’s well made, but style doesn\’t feel like it flows. Also, the songs can sometimes feel more \”Modernized\” than the first two albums, yet retaining that same Evile sound. Some people like the modern sound, some don\’t. I didn\’t care for it too much.

All-in-all the album is good. It was enjoyable, and I even caught myself headbangin\’ at times. If you\’re looking for a good thrash album to listen to while you crack open a few beers with your friends, then this one is for you. It\’s filled with good riffs, drums, vocals, bass, everything. It might not be the perfect album, but if you want a good thrash title, this one will make a worthy addition to your collection.

Twins Crew – Judgment Night

August 1st, 2011
by Erich Heintzelman

Reviewed: August 2011
Released: 2011, Unsigned
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Erich

Twins Crew is yet another Swedish band, founded by twin brothers and guitarists, Dennis and David Janglöv in 2007. Their ambitious goal for the band was to fuse the aggression of Pantera and In Flames with the power metal sounds of Helloween and Stratovarious and then round it out with some good ‘ole Maiden and Priest. Yeah, I know that you are probably wondering how does a band fuse all of that together? I guess the best answer is that they didn’t. However, the album suffers none whatsoever as JUDGEMENT NIGHT is a triumph, pure and simple.

Helloween and Stratovarious won the day, but there are also many elements of one of my favorite power metal bands, Labyrinth, infused within the music. Album opener “Eternal Nights” is a tour de force that briefly captures a chugging Pantera riff before transitioning into full-on harmony guitars followed by outstanding aggressive vocals come chorus time, and acoustic interludes. It is an excellent showcase track. The rest of the album is equally impressive, with some expected power metal cheese moments such as the Manowar-like spoken track “Judgement Night” and the obligatory ballad, “Tales Of A Hero” drawing inspiration from “A Tale That Wasn’t Right”. Then follows a song like “Light” which is sugary aggression, executed with a perfect understanding of power metal’s origins and righting a slight list of the ship.

Man, I have to say I like this album. No, it is not reinvention of the wheel but it is expertly performed and catchy as hell. There are no weak links in the band, Andreas Larsson vocals always reaching for, and finding the perfect melody accompaniments to the Janglov brothers speedy riffs, while the rhythm section of Hammar and Ericsson propel things along. This album is not likely to convert detractors of power metal that derides the speedy guitars and high falsettos, but fans that might be on board are the cautious power metal fans, the ones that find certain bands in small doses rewarding. Twins Crew employs enough aggression to offset some of the saccharine melodies, and the songs are really songs, not wank fests. Fans of traditional power metal need not ponder this one, just go out and buy the damned album.
