MALEVOLENCE: first live show in 11 years captured fan footage available for streaming in 1080 HD quality

August 11th, 2011
by EvilG

Fan-filmed footage of MALEVOLENCE’s performance at this year’s edition of VAGOS OPEN AIR FESTIVAL, which was held August 5-6, 2011 in LAGOA DE CALVÃO, PORTUGAL, is available for streaming on YOUTUBE. The videos were recorded by Eurico Bernardo and are available in 1080 HD quality. HUNTERS OF THE RED MOON is from their 2nd full length effort MARTYRIALIZED while EQUILIBRIUM IN EXTREMIS is from a new track that shall be obtainable in their upcoming 3rd full length record arising to the masses in 2012. VAGOS OPEN AIR FESTIVAL is presently the major metal show in PORTUGAL and this was the first stage show for MALEVOLENCE in 11 years. While the band made a triumphant come back sharing the stage with extreme metal acts such as MORBID ANGEL, DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT or even IHSAHN, the Portuguese crowd was early in anticipation of the bands come back as the videos truthfully portray. MALEVOLENCE core base line-up is at present CARLOS CARIANO (vocals/guitars), AIRES PEREIRA (bass) and MARCELO COSTA (guitars). André Silva (drums) is MALEVOLENCE’s stage live session drummer. MALEVOLENCE enters the studio this week and more details about the recording and personnel involved will follow. THE BEAST IS RISING!

“Hey folks, it’s been a while since I’ve posted and update, but trust me that things have not been quiet in the Sargon camp. It is my pleasure to announce that we have reached an agreement with Old School/Extreme Metal label “Old Cemetery Records” for the physical release of Sargon’s debut album “In Contempt”. The release date will be September 23rd, 2011, and we’ll be announcing a CD release show in Phoenix, Arizona very soon.

Sargon has also been added to the lineup of bands to perform at this year’s San Antonio, Texas based Death Metal festival: The Goregrowler’s Ball  “3 days, 50+ bands, and 2 stages!”. Sargon will be performing on Friday, November 18th, 2011. On their the last days in Europe, Misery Index came to Finland to play in the festival Tuska Open Air. The band, well known for its furious grind and death metal style, was promoting their latest record, ”Heirs to Thievery”, and a day before the Tuska gig I talked with basist/vocalist Jason Netherton about the band’s current situation, their future plans and also about his time in Dying Fetus, plus about Misery Index’s hometown of Baltimore, Maryland.

JOHN DeSERVIO – Black Label Society, Cycle Of Pain

August 11th, 2011
by Marko Syrjala

John DeServio is best known from his long career with Black Label Society. DeServio was the original bass player for Black Label starting from 1998 but he decided to quit with the band in 2000. The man returned into their ranks just five years later following the departure of James Lomenzo and has been a part of “the family” since then. DeServio also has his own band called Cycle of Pain whose debut album was released in 2009 and he’s also been working with such names as Vinnie Moore, Ritchie Kotzen and Derek Sherinian. We had the honor to sit down with the man himself prior to Black Label’s triumphant performance at Sweden Rock – here are the results of that interesting discussion… Read on!

Melodic Metaller “Empires of Eden” signs with ROCK N GROWL

August 10th, 2011
by EvilG
Stu Marshall

Stu Marshall

Australian melodic metaller’s “Empires of Eden” has signed a management deal with “ROCK N GROWL” for the USA and European territories.

Stu Marshall: “It’s a great pleasure to be associated with Rock N Growl Management. I have been looking for the right partnership and Axel is proven in the industry. There is alot of exciting developments ahead and look forward to great things.”

Axel/Rock N Growl: “I’m proud and happy to have Empires Of Eden in my roster. Stu Marhsall is one of the best guys in the biz with unique guitar work and it’s a pleasure to work with him.”

Forthcoming third “Empires Of Eden” album:

Although the details of which world-wrecking stars will be featured on the third album are shrouded in contractual secrecy, one name has been revealed so far: Ronny Munroe of Metal Church fame. Considering that Munroe has enlisted Marshall’s cooperation in writing and producing his own forthcoming record, there really wasn’t any way to keep this one quiet. With lush, picturesque orchestral arrangements, bone-crushing riffs, kaleidoscopic soloing and spectacular vocal performances, Empires of Eden has developed a trademark sound that redefines the concept of epic.

From Avantasia to Ayreon and beyond, collaborations in metal typically prove to be more than the sum of their parts. This has been never been more true than in the case of Empires of Eden, a melodic metal project originating from Sydney, Australia and spanning the entire globe in its unprecedented scope.

Masterminded by former Dungeon guitarist and ESP clinician Stu Marshall, Empires of Eden is characterised by a massive power metal sound, 30-piece orchestral score, and guest performances from some of the most celebrated musicians in the industry. Proving that neither oceans nor national boundaries are capable of stopping this explosive onslaught, Marshall has enlisted the participation of artists from all corners of the globe to assemble an army of veteran talent like no other.

The debut release Songs of War and Vengeance raised the bar across the board in several categories of metal: symphonic, collaborative, progressive, melodic and generally groundbreaking. Empires of Eden’s sophomore effort, Reborn in Fire, brought even higher acclaim, consistently scoring 9/10 or higher in reviews worldwide. In addition to Marshall’s uncompromising compositional skills and technical guitar wizardry, the album was reinforced by vocalists who have earned their place in history, such as Mike Vescera (Yngwie Malmsteen / Loudness), Zak Stevens (Savatage / Circle II Circle) and Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper / Lionsheart) to name just three.

Compared to other collaborative projects of this kind, Empires of Eden is unique in the extent to which the guest vocalists are involved with the writing of the songs themselves. According to Marshall, although he tailors the instrumental backing to each singer’s individual style and preferred range, “They are completely at liberty to write any lyrics they want, and they pen the vocal melodies themselves, too.” Having so much artistic freedom not only increases the vocalists’ enthusiasm for the project, but also enables them to deliver their best possible performances, unbounded by the usual constraints of the ‘guest musician’ format.

MEGADETH Confirm November 1st North American Street Date For TH1RT3EN

August 9th, 2011
by EvilG

Megadeth have officially announced the forthcoming release of their thirteenth album, titled TH1RT3EN. The album will be released November 1st, 2011 via Roadrunner Records in North America. TH1RT3EN will be released in Japan on October 26th with a bonus track (to be revealed). Release dates for other territories will be announced soon.

TH1RT3EN follows up 2009’s Endgame, which was one of the most celebrated albums of the pioneering band’s storied career. Anticipation is high and fans are anxious for a taste of new music from the legends, who have sold over 25 million albums globally throughout the course of their career, and they will get it imminently.

Dave Mustaine is incredibly proud of the music put forth on the new recording, saying, “This record is the culmination of my work over the 13 records I recorded. There are moments on TH1RT3EN that capture my every emotion, and other moments where I am releasing feelings I never knew existed! My proudest moments of my musical career are captured on TH1RT3EN.”

TH1RT3EN also marks the recorded return of bassist Dave Ellefson who was part of the band’s classic lineup from 1983 to 2002. In a move that delighted the band’s legion of diehards, Ellefson returned to performing live with Megadeth in early 2010 and has remained a fixture on the stage ever since. This is the first time Ellefson has played on a Megadeth record since 2002’s Rude Awakening.

The title has several levels of meaning, which leader and guitar deity Dave Mustaine, who first picked up an axe at the age of 13, revealed in a recent chat with, saying, “I was born on September 13th; this is my thirteenth record. It just seemed like it was the right thing to do to call it TH1RT3EN.”

The band is spending its summer dominating and decimating the main stage of the fourth annual Rock Star Energy Drink Mayhem Festival alongside GODSMACK and DISTURBED. The band will cap off a busy and headline-making summer by performing as part of The Big Four once again, this time in New York at Yankee Stadium alongside METALLICA, SLAYER and ANTHRAX. The only previous Big Four show in the US took place in April in Southern California.

The band also recorded an original track, ‘Never Dead’, specifically for the NeverDead action-adventure video game franchise. ‘Never Dead’ will appear on TH1RT3EN. Additionally, ‘Sudden Death’ was recorded for Guitar Hero Warriors Of Rock and will appear on the album.

Dave Mustaine recently told Artisan News that he was so busy completing TH1RT3EN that now that he’s done he doesn’t know what to do with himself. He also questions the album’s November 1st release date. Check out the video report below:

TH1RT3EN was recorded at the band’s own recording facility – Vic’s Garage studio – in San Marcos, California with producer Johnny K (DISTURBED, 3 DOORS DOWN, FINGER ELEVEN).

At a one-off gig from the European Big 4 shows, (July 4th) Megadeth debuted their new track, ‘Public Enemy No.1’, live in Hamburg, Germany at the Docks. Watch fan-filmed footage of the new track below:

GOATWHORE launches studio update; recording new album at Mana Studios in Tampa, FL

August 9th, 2011
by EvilG

New album being produced by Erik Rutan

GOATWHORE has posted their first video update from the studio on HERE. The video was shot and edited by the band and is the first in a series of videos that will chronicle the recording of the new album. The band is making quick progress and drums have already been completed.

Drummer Zack Simmons added the following: “Tracking for the new record went very smoothly with the help of excellent equipment. I played a Pearl Reference kit with Sabian AA cymbals. The drums sound like canons of doom. Every time I hear the toms I want to break something because they sound so damn good. The AA’s were a perfect match in their ability to cut through the thunder of the drums. This record is going to have a giant pair of balls hanging from it.”

Erik Rutan also produced the band’s previous two efforts, A Haunting Curse and Carving Out the Eyes of God. More details, including art, music and more studio updates will be made available as soon as they are completed.

Once GOATWHORE wraps up recording, they will immediately hit the road for headlining shows starting in Tampa, FL. From there, they will join the Exhumed tour presented by Hails and Horns, MetalSucks and MetalInjection. Support on the tour comes from Cephalic Carnage and Havok. The tour stars in Gallup, NM on October 26th. All current dates can be seen now on the band’s facebook page HERE.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM: NPR Track Premiere & Tour Updates

August 9th, 2011
by EvilG

Today, mainstream media outlet National Public Radio is hosting the public’s first listen to “Woodland Cathedral,” the fifth track off of Cascadian black metal act WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s upcoming LP, Celestial Lineage. The majestic “Woodland Cathedral” is surely one of the most melodic and serene arrangements within WITTR’s latest triad of albums, –  a trio that began with 2007’s incredibly organic opus Two Hunters, segued by 2009’s more aggressive Black Cascade album, and now climaxing with Celestial Lineage – and is a primal example of what the newest LP from one America’s paramount black metal acts is capable of delivering.

Tune in HERE to immerse yourself in the hymn.

Celestial Lineage is set for release in North America via Southern Lord Recordings on September 13, 2011, and is inarguably one of the most anticipated black metal releases of the entire year.

In related news, WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM have expanded and adjusted their previously announced first tour in support of Celestial Lineage, which embarks at the end of August, and will now run into early October. WITTR will be joined by Louisiana sludge-crushers Thou for a solid chunk of the Canadian and Midwest/Northeast U.S. dates, while their brethren in Portland-based Megaton Leviathan will join much of the second segment of the tour. Due to the underground nature of this tour, the details for some engagements will be announced at a later date; stay tuned to WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM’s official website for constant updates to this voyage.

Forbidden 2010

Forbidden 2010

The video for “Omega Wave,” the title track off reactivated Bay Area thrashers FORBIDDEN’s new album of the same name, is now available for viewing exclusively on  “Omega Wave” was created by SchneppZone video director Jon Schnepp of Metalocalypse fame.

Guitarist, songwriter, and founding member Craig Locicero offers the following commentary about working with such a creative mastermind:

“FORBIDDEN never got to make a proper video in the past. Sure, we’d made a couple below average ones over our first 10 years of our history, but never anything we were very proud of. When we finally recorded Omega Wave after a 14 year break between records, we knew it HAD to be something special.  So making the correct choice of director was very important.  When Jon Schepp’s name came up at [label manager] Gerardo Martinez’s suggestion, I thought it was perfect.  Jon’s our man!  Luckily he said yes.

“Most people know Jon from the Metalocalypse series and Exodus videos.  Being the Cartoon Network fan that I am, I was aware of his work on Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, The Venture Brothers, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. All appealing to me and my warped sense of humor. And I obviously love what he did with the Exodus’s ‘Riot Act’ video. All good stuff for different reasons and he’s obviously good with effects.

“Jon came up with a wicked story board immediately after he listened to ‘Omega Wave.’  We wanted the lyrics to be represented like a thrash-hammer to the head.  Mind control, paranoia, fear, and impending doom surrounding humanity leading into 2012 and all of its prophecy and innuendo needed to be bluntly represented. Those things are very much in this video – along with some of Jon’s trademark dark humor put in for good measure.

“Everyone in the band loves the clip. We are all very proud of the song and Jon’s work. Most importantly, it represents the first time we as a band can hang our hat on a video with confidence and say that’s a FORBIDDEN fucking video!  Embrace the Metal and enjoy; the end of an age should always be this fun!”

About working with FORBIDDEN and getting to create another music video, Schnepp shares:

“I have become more selective with what I do while I’m skimping the running hammerhead towards death.  Many bands want me to make videos for them, especially since my directing work on the Dethklok concert tours.  After directing and creating an entire hour of animated music videos, I realized I have actually made my own ‘Heavy Metal’ movie.

“To do a music video nowadays, I have to time it with a number of elements: Does the band rock, can I do what I want, and do I have time?  I usually end up not having the time, since I do so much of the video myself, treating it as a stand-alone art object as well as a commercial product.  I want to be able to watch this twenty years from now and still be into it.

“After hearing that FORBIDDEN wanted a video and speaking with Craig and hearing ‘Omega Wave,’ I realized we were completely in sync.  I wanted to try some cool visual ideas, and the guys were all onboard.  I wanted to tell a story without a basic narrative, so the images constantly flowed, and the final result was an intense visual journey. Craig and the rest of FORBIDDEN were all great about being shot on a rotating mechanical board against a bright greenscreen, and kept the intensity of their live performance intact.  I’m very happy with end results of the ‘Omega Wave’ music video.  No actual b-roll; just a miasma of ever-churning visuals with the band playing and completely involved in the visuals.”

FORBIDDEN’s Omega Wave album debuted at #27 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, #83 on the Billboard Top Hard Music Albums chart, and #92 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart the week following its October 2010 release.

The band just returned from a successful tour in Australia and are ready to assault ALL senses with their performances at the Bloodstock and Brutal Assault festivals.  Their European tour with Communic and Demonica launches on September 26th.

Listen to the tracks “Forsaken At The Gates” and “Dragging My Casket” on the band’s Facebook page.

GOREAPHOBIA: Apocalyptic Necromancy Out NOW

August 9th, 2011
by EvilG

Today, Dark Descent Records is proud to unleash Apocalyptic Necromancy, the long-anticipated new full length from legendary Philadelphia death metal kings, GOREAPHOBIA. Apocalyptic Necromancy was recorded, mixed and mastered by drummer Jim Roe, features new guitarist VJS (Kult ov Azazel, Crimson Moon, Demoncy, etc.) and has been earning accolades from fans and critics alike.

In an early review of the record, called Apocalyptic Necromancy, “…a natural progression for GOREAPHOBIA, that will appeal to anyone looking for something a little different to go along with their daily dose of death metal.” The Adversary championed the warriors of the left hand path saying, “You can definitely hear the Celtic Frost, Venom and Bathory influence at work here. Powerful mid to fast paced crushing riffs, the overall sound takes me back to the day’s when death metal was just starting out… GOREAPHOBIA has done it again, Apocalyptic Necromancy is some killer death metal.” Blistering agreed, “For anybody who likes some good, dirty, grimy old school death metal, look no further than the newest release from Philly’s GOREAPHOBIA.” Noted, “…if you like old school thrashy death metal with a lot of groove, heaviness, melody and old-fashioned brutality, then you should check out this release,” while Heavy Metal Time Machine added, “Filthy and foul the album is nothing if not nasty and loud. True to their underground creed GOREAPHOBIA don’t get caught up in current trends.”

As previously reported, GOREAPHOBIA will make a rare appearance on The Gathering Of The Bestial Legion V fest on August 27 at The Proud Bird in Los Angeles, California. The band will play alongside Autopsy, Incantation, Acheron, Ares Kingdom and many more. For tickets and further info, visit:
