Melodic metallers LORD announce new EP, reveal track-listing, cover art and guests.

August 20th, 2010
by EvilG
LORD - 'Return Of The Tyrant'

LORD - 'Return Of The Tyrant'

Commented LORD mainman L.T., “Finally we can release all of the details about our forthcoming EP ‘Return Of The Tyrant‘ that will be out in the next few weeks. For something that started out as a quick, fun project to give everyone something to listen to while they wait for us to release our next album, it turned into a major undertaking in the end but it was all worth the extra effort. As far as EPs go, this is a long one; close to an album length of music, with eleven songs including the title track which clocks in around the ten minute mark.

“As for the songs themselves, we have ‘Return Of The Tyrant‘ which is essentially part two of the old DUNGEON song ‘Tarranno Del Mar’. We’d always felt that the original story was unfinished and the intention was to revisit it at some point, but then DUNGEON broke up in 2005 and we continued on as LORD instead, and the idea was shelved. The original riffs that were floating around for that sequel have now finally made it to a recording. Unlike ‘Tarranno Del Mar’ which suffered all manner of budget and technical issues, we were able to go all-out on ‘Return Of The Tyrant’ and fully orchestrate it, bring in actors, dozens of guitar parts and literally hundreds of voices in the choirs. It truly is an epic! It was also great to have our good friends and ex-band mates Tim Yatras and Mav Stevens come in to be a part of the choir.

“Long-time fans of the band will know we love playing cover songs and we have a massive list of songs we want to record ranging from BON JOVI to BATHORY and beyond. This time we’ve recorded a cover of SYMPHONY X’s classic ‘Of Sins And Shadows’ and the 80s pop hit by CUTTING CREW ‘(I Just) Died In Your Arms’ which features lead vocals by [bassist] Andy Dowling. During our last Australian tour, we did some unplugged shows. That sparked the idea of recording some unplugged versions of LORD and DUNGEON songs one day, so we decided to include some on this EP: ‘Against The Wind‘, ‘100 Reasons‘, ‘Rain‘, ‘New Horizons‘, ‘Paradise‘ and ‘Eternal Storm‘. And if all of that wasn’t enough, we’ve also put on two extra mixes of ‘Return Of The Tyrant’ – an orchestral version and a shorter radio edit.

“As usual, we’ve had our friend Felipe Machado Franco [BLIND GUARDIAN, RHAPSODY, ICED EARTH, GAMMA RAY] handle the cover art, which will also be featured on shirts that we’ll be selling on our current tour. We’re still hard at work writing the next LORD album, but we hope you enjoy the new EP until it’s done. Keep an eye on http://www.lord.net.au for the upcoming release date of the EP.”

Full track-listing for the EP:

1. Return Of The Tyrant
2. Of Sins And Shadows (Symphony X cover)
3. (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight (Cutting Crew cover)
4. Against The Wind (unplugged)
5. Rain (unplugged)
6. 100 Reasons (unplugged)
7. Paradise (unplugged)
8. Eternal Storm (unplugged)
9. New Horizons (unplugged)
10. Return Of The Tyrant (orchestral version)
11. Return Of The Tyrant (radio edit)

LORD’s “The Tyrants Return” tour will take them all around Australia and also features dates in Japan with DORO and JADED HEART. Tour dates:

August 13th – Newtown, Notes (18+)
August 27th – Wollongong, The Grand Hotel (18+)
August 28th – Canberra, The Maram (18+)

November 26th – Brisbane, Rosies (18+)
November 27th – Rockhampton, The Anchor Hotel (18+)

LORD was formed from the ashes of DUNGEON who disbanded in 2005 after world tours with the likes of MEGADETH, NIGHTWISH, EDGUY and more, and has since gone on to tour with bands such as QUEENSRYCHE, SAXON, GAMMA RAY, NEVERMORE and released three well-received albums. The band recently released a tongue-in-cheek cover of KYLIE MINOGUE’s “On A Night Like This”, which become an instant success, and must see for many.

THE OCEAN reveal track listing and details on “Anthropocentric”

August 20th, 2010
by EvilG

The Ocean are currently in the process of mixing their upcoming album Anthropocentric at Studio Mecanique in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the same place where Heliocentric was recorded and mixed. The album will be mastered on August 25th by Svante Forsbäck in Helsinki.

usically, the album feels somehow heavier than Heliocentric. “The sound is more dense and maybe a tad more raw, which suits the songs perfectly”, comments guitar player Jonathan Nido. The album covers a similar sonic and dynamic range as Heliocentric, also including a number of calm, acoustic moments – but these are for the most part orchestrated with guitars, and not so much with piano and string section. The focus is on the heavy songs: “The album is a pretty big production, and still has a very earthy, organic feel to it”, comments Staps. “We have spent a great deal of time on the basic sound this time around, drums, bass, guitars and vocals… and at this stage I am pretty confident that this will pay off in the end!”

As far as the concepts behind Anthropocentric are concerned, the focus is on man and his place in the universe: at the center, as many fundamental Christians still claim today, or more likely a dust particle in its periphery? All lyrics are circling around this question. “Anthropocentric will continue the critique of christianity, inspired by the questions that Dostoyevsky asked and some of the answers that Friedrich Nietzsche and Richard Dawkins gave”, comments Staps.

At the base of the album are three songs with the titles “The Grand Inquisitor I, II and III”. These songs have been inspired by the chapter of the same title in Fjodor Dostoyevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamasov: a conversation between the brothers Ivan, an atheist, and Alyoscha, a monk. Ivan tells Alyoscha the story of a Second Coming of Christ in 16th century Sevilla. According to this parable, Jesus is arrested by the Catholic inquisition. The grand inquisitor who interrogates Jesus casts a new light on the legend of the temptation of Christ: he reproaches Jesus with having betrayed humanity and having deprived man of salvation by giving him freedom. The conversation between Ivan and Alyoscha mirrors, to some degree, the conversation between the grand inquisitor and Christ and raises more questions than it answers. “This long dialogue, which for the most part is rather a monologue of Ivan, is so complex and recondite that one could easily find inspiration for 10 concept albums about Christianity in it”, comments Staps.

Only 6 guest musicians are appearing on the album, all classical musicians, most of whom are guesting on the final track of the album. Anthropocentric is an album by The Ocean’s consolidated nucleus. “It is the first album where all members have actively partaken in the songwriting”, comments Staps.

The track listing for Anthropocentric is as follows:

1. Anthropocentric

2. The Grand Inquisitor I: Karamazov baseness

3. She Was The Universe

4. For He That Wavereth…

5. The Grand Inquisitor II: Roots & Locusts

6. The Grand Inquisitor III: A Tiny Grain of Faith

7. Sewers Of The Soul

8. Wille Zum Untergang

9. Heaven TV

10. The Almightiness Contradiction

11. The Grand Inquisitor IV: Exclusion From Redemption

The last track is a bonus track which will only appear on the vinyl and the limited European deluxe digipak version.

THE OCEAN to tour with Dillinger Escape Plan and Cancer Bats through Europe!

EMA-Polydisc releases Mike Portnoy / S.A. Adams 1986 recording “Unearthed”

August 20th, 2010
by EvilG
EMA-Polydisc releases Mike Portnoy / S.A. Adams 1986 recording "Unearthed"

EMA-Polydisc releases Mike Portnoy / S.A. Adams 1986 recording "Unearthed"

EMA-Polydisc has acquired the rights to release all past and future recordings of  S.A. Adams; debuting with “Unearthed“- the never-before-released 1986 recordings by Adams and Dream Theater / Avenged Sevenfolds Mike Portnoy – recorded between December 28, 1985 and January 11, 1986 at Mike Portnoy’s Long Beach apartment. Citing the influence of bands such as MOTÖRHEAD, EXCITER, RAVEN, early MEGADETH, VENOM and TANK, Adams, in an early 2006 press release warns “The material on “Unearthed”  is definitely NOT progressive rock/prog-stuff — it’s serious sledgehammer-in-the-balls metal. No odd & changing time signatures for anyone here.” Originally scheduled for release that spring of 2006, “Unearthed” had to find another “home” due to the original release label’s bankruptcy.

The “Unearthed” sessions were intended to supplement Adams & Portnoy’s June 30th, 1985 recording a nine song demo/cassette album financed by Kick Ass Monthly journalist Bob Muldowney, who tapped Adams to produce a catalog of music Muldowney was to sing his own penned lyrics over. Aside from including lyrical content that even managed to offend other underground metal fanzines, the recording generated a contract offer from Combat Record’s “Boot Camp” Series.  “Wanting to make sure we could fulfill the content obligations, a plan was implemented to stockpile as much music as possible; which Mike & I accomplished that winter.  However, once I saw the enslavement papers, I mean, contract, the project got put aside.” A few weeks later, Portnoy informed  Adams that he’d be putting all his energy into his new band MAJESTY, leaving Adams to dabble with these multi-track masters throughout the late ’80s and begin the solo career he still enjoys today.   EMA-Polydisc has issued “Unearthed” digitally with availability on iTunes, AmazonMP3, Napster, Loud Trax and other DRM-free outlets.
FnA Records has issued the standard CD, and a limited edition version which comes with a 4×6 autographed by both Mike Portnoy & S.A. Adams.

“Unearthed” Tracklisting
1.  Paste the Glass
2.  Kiss of Death
3.  Love Dies
4.  Too Far Gone
5.  Sex
6.  War
7.  2 Steps
8.  Moths
9.  High Plains Drifter
10. 1986
11. Chapter Closed
12. You Smell Like…
13. Degeneration
14. The Stage Door

On October 12th HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS will release the sophomore album from Canadian head bangers EVIL SURVIVES on CD and digital format. Entitled Powerkiller, the album is 40 minutes of driving NWOBHM worship and was previously released only on vinyl and cassette formats by Canada’s War on Music label. The CD and digital versions will also include a bonus track from the band’s most recent limited vinyl EP.

The track “Resist the Exorcism” from Powerkiller is now available for preview at: www.myspace.com/evilsurvives

Based out Winnipeg, Manitoba EVIL SURVIVES first began spreading their metallic mayhem when the in the summer of 2006 Front man Karl “Axe n’ Smash” Warkentin and guitarist Adrian Riff began the arduous task of recruiting like minded metal heads. Finally after three months the search was complete and EVIL SURVIVES was born. By June 2008 EVIL SURVIVES made its first performance- by no coincidence…but fate! – outside of an Iron Maiden concert in their home town of Winnipeg.  Less than a month later, EVIL SURVIVES entered the studio to record their debut full length album Metal Vengeance released exclusively on vinyl on by Canadian ‘War on Music’ label.

On the heels of a growing renown, EVIL SURVIVES were right back in studio by the end of 2009 to record their second full length album, entitled Powerkiller, released by War on Music on vinyl and limited edition cassette. Mixed entirely in analog, the master reels contained over 40 minutes of driving NWOBHM worship, sounding like 1985-2009 never even happened.  Powerkiller caught the attention of New York metal merchants HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS.

MARIONETTE Hits The Studio, Photos Available, More “The SlaughTour
2010” Headline U.K. And Scandinavian Shows with DARK TRANQUILLITY

Gothenburg Sweden based metal sextet MARIONETTE recently entered Studio
Fredman with producer Fredrik Nordström (IN FLAMES, BRING ME THE HORIZON)
to begin recording the band’s as of yet-untitled third album.  Guitarist
and backing vocalist Aron Parmerud made the following remarks regarding the
recording sessions and progress thus far:

“The recordings for our third album are underway! We spent a great deal
of time after our last UK/EU tour with BLESSTHEFALL working on new songs
and ended up with over 14 songs.  Last month Jimmy came in and nailed each
of the songs on drums and from there we began tracking the guitars and bass
all at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg.  Linus [Johansson, keyboards] and I
are working with the ambiance of the music and the keyboards.  Alexander
[Andersson, vocals] is currently working hard on the lyrics and vocal
lines. We’ve made some studio photos available on our Official Facebook

“Fans of our Spite and more so Enemies albums will find some familiar
elements in our new songs.  Listeners will certainly hear contrasts between
brutal and beautiful, progressive and catchy, and up-tempo and down-tempo.
There are more elements that will be very new to our listeners.  We’re
eager to perform a few of these new songs live on our upcoming “The
SlaughTour 2010” dates in the UK and Denmark, and our recently confirmed
shows with fellow Gothenburgers DARK TRANQUILLITY in Sweden and Norway.  So
come out, see us live, and be the first to hear some new MARIONETTE songs
this October and November!”

In addition to MARIONETTE’s “The SlaughTour 2010” headline tour, the
band will join fellow Gothenburgers DARK TRANQUILLITY on the final Swedish
and Norwegian dates of the “Where Death is Most Alive Part II” Tour.

Johansson (ELDRIMNER), replacing Jimmy Olausson who amicably left

HAIL OF BULLETS 'On Divine Winds'

Dutch Death Metal Masters HAIL OF BULLETS have announced On Divine Winds as the title of the band’s upcoming full-length studio album to be released October 12th via Metal Blade Records!

HAIL OF BULLETS’ debut album ‘…Of Frost and War’ was a concept album about the Eastern front war of Germany. ‘On Divine Winds’ is another concept album, this time covering the Pacific battles between Japan and the USA.

Vocalist Martin van Drunen comments: “This time Hail of Bullets takes on the Pacific War. The expansion of the Empire of Japan throughout Asia, introducing a full scale war using all forces combined. The massive strike back of the Americans, whose marines bravely fought many tough and bloody battles on now forgotten insulate islands spread throughout the whole Pacific. This led to desperate Japanese defense tactics such as Kamikaze, human bullets and suicidal Banzai charges. Until finally, incendiary bombings brought the empire to its knees.”

The album title On Divine Winds refers to the translation for the Japanese word Kamikaze, as kami stands for “God” and kaze means “wind”.

On Divine Winds track listing:

1. The Eve Of Battle

2. Operation Z

3. The Mukden Incident

4. Strategy of Attrition

5. Full Scale War

6. Guadalcanal

7. On Coral Shores

8. Unsung Heroes

9. Tokyo Napalm Holocaust

10. Kamikaze

11. To Bear the Unbearable

On Divine Winds was produced by Ed Warby and like before the monstrous mix was in the capable hands of Mr. Dan Swanö.

Drummer Ed Warby adds: “I don’t think I’ve ever worked this hard on anything in my entire life, but it sure has paid off! Although …Of Frost And War is a tough act to follow, my ringing ears tell me we’ve succeeded in besting it on every level: songs, playing, production… at the moment Dan Swanö is putting the final touches on a mix that could squash a tank, and then it’s off to the pressing plant! All the main ingredients of our blood ‘n’ guts style death metal have remained intact and I honestly can’t imagine anyone that liked our previous work is going to be the least bit disappointed… on the contrary!”

On Divine Winds will be released out October 12th in North America!
