Holocaust and Krieg formed Eastern Front at the end of 2006. With an interest in the Second World War, and its effect on Europe, they were interested in exploring the history, through music; and from a subjective, personal and emotional, point of view.
Eastern Front takes a new approach to Black Metal – which has been labelled “War Torn Black Metal”. Musically, they retain a traditional Black Metal sound but experiment with other genres, like Doom, Death, folk and classical, to create a range of different atmospheres in their songs. Each song evokes the emotional experiences of battle, encompassing hope, pride, comradeship, misery, sorrow and victory.
Within a few months of forming, Eastern Front recorded a demo CD, “Promo 2007”, to get other people’s opinions about the music. Due to the decision to ‘release’ the tracks and market the CD online, the CDs (limited to 350 copies) quickly sold out and the overall response was extremely positive.
This encouraged the band to start working on further material to create a live set and tour. In the meantime, the demo tracks, and the further release of the track “Blood on Snow” raised the band’s profile to the extent that they beat over 150 other bands to be voted “The Metal Underground’s “Best Unsigned Metal Band 2007”.
“Blood on Snow”, the title track from the forthcoming debut album, was inspired by Gunter K. Koschorrek’s book “Blood Red Snow: The Memoirs of a German Soldier on the Eastern Front”. The song was recorded on Remembrance Sunday (11th November) 2007 and, along with its promotional video that has been played on American TV channels, has been responsible for generating considerable interest in Eastern Front.
This has included featuring in Zero Tolerance Magazine and on both Metal Hammer Magazine and Zero Tolerance cover mount CDs, as well as current airplay on several radio stations including Total Rock Radio, ICR FM and BBC Radio Essex.
In April 2008 the band featured on Total Rock Radio and had a two-hour feature on the station, which included interviews, airplay and a competition to win Eastern Front merchandise.
Most recently, Eastern Front teamed up with The Meads of Asphodel and 28 other UK Metal bands in December 2009 for Terrorizer Magazine’s exclusive Black Metal Xmas song titled “Song of A Hundred Roars”.
Eastern Front’s music also features in the Vertigo Films production “Faintheart”. From over 300 bands of all musical genres, Faintheart’s director, Vito Rocco, short-listed Eastern Front and four other bands to face a public vote – which Eastern Front won. The film was released in UK Cinemas in January 2009 and on DVD in February 2009. “Blood on Snow” also features on the soundtrack album released by EMI Records, alongside songs by Saxon, Human League, Tenpole Tudor and Katie Melua.
Eastern Front continues to tour. Having played throughout the UK alongside bands like: Primordial, Belphegor, Swallow the Sun, Shining, Taake, Skyforger, Primal Fear, Blaze Bayley, Brainstorm, Insision, Hate, Helheim, Averse Sefira, Obtest, Hecate Enthroned and Desecration gaining very positive reviews in major Webzines and Magazines. They also embarked on their first tour of Europe, September 2008, supporting Lord Belial and Graveworm. This tour included festival dates in Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary.
Eastern Front returned to Romania August 2009 to headline “Stay Metal Forever Festival 2009” in Bucharest and in September 2009 they were the main support band to Blaze Bayley on the “Best of British Night” at Metalfest 2009 in Dudley, UK.
The end of 2009 leading into the beginning of 2010 saw Eastern Front being main support to Huldrefolk, Obtest and Belphegor in London and playing at Terrorizer’s Causing Chaos for Cancer Fest 2010 in Newcastle. Gaining more positive reviews, including an 8/10 live review in Metal Hammer Magazine.
Eastern Front recently finished recording their debut album, “Blood on Snow”, at Andy La Rocque’s (King Diamond) Sonic Train Studios in Varberg, Sweden. “Blood on Snow” was then produced by Anders Backelin (Lord Belial) in March 2010.
Eastern Front are now signed to Candlelight Records and will release their debut album “Blood on Snow” later in the year. This album features a track by Les Smith (Anathema) and Brian Moss (DFA) titled “Dvenadtzat Kilometrov ot Moskvy” and is sure to take UK Black Metal to the next level.
The band had this to say:
“Eastern Front are very proud to have signed to the well-respected Candlelight Records. Candlelight Records have always been our target label for our album releases due to the number of great artists and albums they have unleashed on the world, which includes, Emperor, Opeth, Enslaved, Obituary, Absu and 1349. To now be part of this on going army of successful artists is a great achievement for our band. We feel that Candlelight Records respects and understands our artistic outlet and goals and with this new alliance we hope to take Eastern Front and U.K Black Metal to the next level.”
Three legendary heavy metal guitarists KK Downing (Judas Priest), Kimmo Kuusniemi (Sarcofagus) and Varg Vikernes (Burzum) were interviewed for an extensive US rock webzine Peacedogman “Guitargument” article.
This in depth interview makes comparisons between three generations of influential metal guitarist – KK Downing from the 60’s, Kuusniemi from the 70’s and Vikernes from the 80’s… and asks – amongst other things – about their music making methods, guitar preferences and the essence of metal. The article has some brilliant and interesting revelations!
Guitargument: The Three Guitarists interview by Devamitra Volksfaust:
“Thousands of years have seen generations of bards and minstrels shape wood, caress strings with their fingers and pick ever more complex and varied tunes for the entertainment of kings and peasants, for joy and for grief. It’s been roughly 80 years since the magnetic pick-up was invented and soon was to be connected to electric amplifiers, to make guitar the unique conducting rod between the musical forces of the past and the future. Everything from pacts with the devil to manifests against social oppression have been channeled through the thundering vibrations of the “axe”. There would be no rock music as we know without it, much less heavy metal or punk. Whichever your preferred strain may be, it’s fair to assume that a reader of this site is more or less particular, if not religious, about commanding guitar riffs and intense guitar solos.
So it was high time to arrange some serious discussion about this guitar business. Heavy metal heroes come and go and each new issue of the bigger guitar magazines demonstrates a hyped-up melo-death geek or self-possessed power metal “how many notes per second” twat bragging about expensive equipment and superficial guitar tech trivia. But as can be expected, they rarely get down to the essence of things, which is how to cut the crap and make the magic happen. The surge of infernal energy right through your brain when the guitar-driven band pulls out all the stops and reaches for the night skies: the metal moments.
K.K. Downing formed his first heavy rock band with his pal Ian Hill in 1969, at 18 years old. As a member of JUDAS PRIEST he has toured Europe, America and Asia countless times, performed on 17 albums, profoundly influenced heavy metal and speed metal in sound and presence while blowing our brains out with instantly memorable riffs and some of the most famous and widely imitated solo work in heavy metal.
Kimmo Kuusniemi, a son of little northern country called Finland where no-one had heard the words “heavy metal” before, formed his egyptomaniacal entity SARCOFAGUS in 1977, shooting both figurative and literal fire from his guitar in magisterial stage shows far ahead of the times. He released three classics of Finnish occult and progressive metal filled with his unique amplified guitar histrionics before moving on to other media , while he has continued to preach the sermon of true metal to unbelievers and act as the benevolent godfather of the Finnish metal scene.
Varg Vikernes seems more like a myth than a real person, the antagonistic metal magician of Norway, the progenitor of BURZUM, who first picked up the guitar in 1987 and barely five years later, unleashed a multidimensional wave of darkness upon the world – one that we would come to know as black metal. Hypnotic, ethereal and frightening, the runic spells of Varg’s possession never stayed the same, formulating seven albums full of the mysteries of the forest and the past, weakly imitated countless times since not only in metal, but in post rock, industrial and indie drone as well.”
After an unusually mild April here in Ottawa, Canada came to a close, an insipid blackened chill blanketed the early daze of May. Could it be an unseasonable thermodynamic change brought upon by some of heavy metal’s elite galloping into town astride their warhorses, chasing victory while brandishing swords/pointy guitars of doom, death and destruction? It was not a coincidence that the malevolent weather ushered in the heaviest beatdown of the nascent Spring tour season: Canada’s Greatest Heavy Metal Band, the pride of Vancouver, 3 Inches Of Blood not only took the stage, screaming for vengeance in a denim-clad cavalcade of guitar-wielding awesomeness but their loyal henchmen, Louisiana’s Goatwhore came along for a ride across the melting tundra to peel back the faces of the faithful. The Godfathers of Swedish modern metal, SOILWORK,arecurrently working on a music video for the song “Deliverance Is Mine” to be directed by Ivan Colic (EX DEO, TYPE O NEGATIVE, UNLEASHED) and produced by Stanimir Lucik. The track comes off their latest upcoming release The Panic Broadcast. A few still photos from the story board stage of the project are attached. The band recently talked a little bit about the concept behind the new clip:
“Our new video ‘Deliverance Is Mine’ will be the follow-up to 2003’s CGI animated masterpiece ‘Light The Torch’. We’ve always loved that clip and it’s really exciting to be able to give it a sequel! The song is about people living through others like parasites, a perfect setting for the evil scientist and his humanoid servant to continue their cruel experiments. So far the first drafts look jaw-dropping and we have no doubt that the team over at Rock The Nation will do an amazing job on ‘Deliverance Is Mine’!” The Panic Broadcast is the first album to feature original guitarist, songwriter & producer Peter Wichers since his return to the band in 2008 and is set to be released on July 2 (EUROPE) and July 13 (N. Footage of SLASH (VELVET REVOLVER, ex-GUNS N’ ROSES) being tackled on stage in Milan, Italy on June 10th has surfaced online. Check out the footage below:
According to Metalitalia.com, an unknown person suddenly appeared onstage at Slash’s Milan, Italy performance on June 10th. The commotion took place during the ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ solo and almost slammed Slash down. Slash hit a stage monitor with his guitar, paused the solo for a few seconds, and then started playing again until the end of the song. The whole scene can be viewed at this location.
Santa Cruz CA’s tech-death masters, DECREPIT BIRTH, have revealed the artwork for their upcoming Polarity album, to be released on July 27th in North America on Nuclear Blast Records. The artwork was completed by cult artist Dan Seagrave (MORBID ANGEL, ENTOMBED, SUFFOCATION, etc.) and can be viewed to the right.
Guitarist Matt Sotelo explained the meaning behind the cover:
“Dan‘s art fits the overall theme of the album perfectly. We had approached Dan with some ideas at a show of ours he attended. It was really cool to finally meet Dan in person and get the chance to explain to him some of our song themes as well as ideas for the new album cover. We could tell that he was excited to help us on this one! The cover depicts images of ancient energies and balance, which is something that is personal for us, and perfectly reflects our abstract lyrical and musical style. Dan‘s art is so unmistakable!”
Artist Dan Seagrave offered an even more in depth reasoning behind his artistic interpretation:
“It is the vision of a transcendental nightmare. where the perception of technological power has gone beyond the will of the author. In the slumbering cohesive minds of the human race, and the absence of communicative truth between people, their social masks become their Sarcophagi. A telepathic cult is formed that fells the earth, reducing it to an atomic level. Its information trapped in mirrored shards. Through this energy, distant echos of images are glimpsed, particles reform, and a new chronozone period is born, set adrift at a dawnless epoch.” Polarity Track Listing:
1. (A Departure of the Sun) Ignite the Tesla Coil
3. The Resonance
5. Solar Impulse
6. Mirroring Dimensions
7. A Brief Odyssey in Time
8. The Quickening of Time
9. Sea of Memories
11. Darkness Embrace

HOLY GRAIL’s debut release, the “Improper Burial” 7 inch, has been repressed on white vinyl and is now available through the Prosthetic Records’ web shop. This second pressing is limited to 500 pieces, and is sure to move fast!
Formed a year ago, HOLY GRAlL is already at the forefront of the new wave of metal that pays homage to such legends as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Dio. The band has already earned significant press accolades including a 2-page feature in hometown paper LA Weekly, a spot on Decibel’s “25 Most Anticipated Releases Of 2010” list and inclusion on Metal Hammer’s “Guide To The Best In The Upcoming New Wave Of Trad Metal”. With monster vocals, not one, but two guitar virtuosos and a thundering rhythm section, Holy Grail’s sound is at once classic, yet contemporary, encompassing the best of traditional metal with a youthful spirit. Holy Grail is James Paul Luna (vocals), Eli Santana (guitar), James J. LaRue (guitar), Blake Mount (bass) and Tyler Meahl (drums).
“I’m not happy unless I see someone out there in the pit, bleeding and smiling!” Gary Holt
At the beginning of their career, EXODUS gained huge notoriety in the international underground scene as a result of the tape trading community. Their dynamic guitar riffing, adrenaline-inducing drum work, and bloodied live shows made all the difference in the band’s mission to take Bay Area Thrash to a worldwide audience. By 1983, the band line-up included guitarist Rick Hunolt and bassist Rob McKillop and had inspired the likes of Metallica, Testament, Death Angel, and Vio-lence. EXODUS’ debut, the immortal, must-have, undisputed thrash classic Bonded By Blood was released in and a vast tour with Slayer and Venom propelled the band into a household name. Eight albums later, EXODUS still remain at the top of their game, continuing to dominate the charge and showing all in their path what classic metal is about.
These undisputed thrash metal legends are on their way to smash Australian and New Zealand for their first headlining tour in these parts of the globe. EXODUS promise us another lesson in violence with a thrashing master class in heart-racing, eyebrow-raising, raise-your-fist-in-the-air guitar riffs, rip-tide bass lines, and double-bass flurries.
HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS is pleased to announce the signing of Portland, OR heavy metal maniacs SPELLCASTER. Carrying on the proud legacy of Pacific Northwest heavy metal bands before them such as MALICE, METAL CHURCH and WILD DOGS, SPELLCASTER have arrived to prove that traditional heavy metal is alive and well in the USA.
After the breakup of their previous band during late 2008 guitarist Cory Boyd and drummer Shad Covert set out to start a faster, heavier band with which to fulfill their musical desires. After hearing him sing along to GRIM REAPER tracks on his car stereo, frontman Thomas Adams was immediately recruited on vocals. Following months of practice with various temporary bass players coming and going, the band had put together a set list worth of original material and covers. Ready to hit the stage the band found themselves in need of a bass player for an upcoming show. Gabe Franco of SEVENTH GATE was asked to fill in and after a killer performance, subsequently invited to join the permanent line-up. In need of a second guitarist to complete their dual-guitar attack, Tyler Loney joined SPELLCASTER, filling the last piece of the puzzle and completing the band’s line-up.
With a Solid lineup, SPELLCASTER hit the studio in late 2009 to record and self-release their debut three song EP entitled Spells of Speed. Catching the attention of New York genre giants Heavy Artillery Records, the band were offered an opportunity to join the label’s growing roster. Now armed and ready for battle, SPELLCASTER are finalizing the material for their debut album, tentatively scheduled for release in early 2011. Working nonstop to get their music blasting into the ears of bullet belt abusing, beer bashing headbangers worldwide, SPELLCASTER are a band to watch out for throughout 2010/2011.
Hellbent For Cooking Author Annick "The Morbid Chef" Giroux
Omega’s Apple correspondent Anthony Morgan recently caught up with Annick “The Morbid Chef” Giroux, author of the new heavy metal cookbook Hellbent For Cooking. An excerpt is available below.
Q: Could you talk me through the selection process you underwent in deciding which groups to approach and request recipes from? Given the fact you were relatively unknown at the time, was it difficult to be taken seriously when requesting recipes from groups through email, MySpace or post?
Giroux: “The group selection was very important to me, as it was one of my ultimate goals to introduce people to good metal – which is not necessarily always featured in mainstream magazines. At the very beginning, I looked into my collection and wrote down the names of my favourite bands. That yielded a good amount, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss on any, so I actually went country by country on the online metal encyclopaedia (metal-archives.com) and wrote down my favourite bands’ names, websites and contract info in an Excel spread sheet. That alone took about three weeks – but it made me discover tons of new and obscure metal bands. I contacted and sent out four hundred individually written letters (by e-mail, MySpace or snail mail) and ended up with more than a hundred recipes. Of course, it was very very hard to be taken seriously at the beginning, but when I got Ian to back me up, it went much smoother as he and his publishing company was already well known in the metal scene.”
Q: In an interview with AOL’s Noisecreep, you said that metalheads are “not culinary degenerates by any means”. Do you feel that’s a perception the general, non-metal loving public hold, and that your book goes to some lengths to combat that perception?
Giroux: “Oh yeah, a lot of the general public see metalheads as pizza eatin’ and beer gurgling subhumans. Although they got the beer (and sometimes subhuman) parts right, we are mostly a well-educated crowd who enjoys the finer things in life like good metal, good food, and nice artwork. The book clearly reflects this lifestyle, and I think it achieved it. At least, some people have told me that the book broke all the stereotypes they had for metal. Cool.”
Magic Circle Music recording artists HOLYHELL will take Belgium by storm for the first time ever at the Metal Female Voices Fest VIII at Oktoberhallen in Wieze, Belgium on October 24, 2010. The goth/power metal sensations have been racking up some pretty hefty worldwide touring miles over the last five years and the MFVF organizers sought them out as this year’s very special guest based on the band’s growing reputation as a stellar live act. HOLYHELL’s eponymous, full-length Magic Circle debut was released in the US and Canada on June 8th and the band is also participating in the label’s forthcoming tribute CD, “Magic – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio,” with a monstrous live rendition of one of Dio’s all time classics “Holy Diver.”
MFVF is a Metal festival dedicated to female-fronted bands and has been running since 2003. It takes place every year in Belgium, most recently at Oktoberhallen in Wieze. The growing success of the festival comes from its unique concept, but also from past appearances by Epica, Nightwish, After Forever, Tarja and many others. This year’s line-up includes Arch Enemy, Revamp, Leaves’ Eyes and now, thanks to the fans, HOLYHELL.
SUICIDAL ANGELS' new full-length Sanctify The Darkness
Greek old-school thrash assassins SUICIDAL ANGELS’ new full-length Sanctify The Darkness will see North American release on Sonic Unyon Metal in mere weeks.
Already released across Europe on Nuclear Blast in November of 2009, the album will see official release in North America on June 22nd, 2010, and will mark SUICIDAL ANGELS’ first official North American release, versus being imported from Europe on previous releases. The band’s solid, no-bullshit attack has already reaped massive press and fan response across much of the world, and the crunchy, hellish riff attacks on the eleven meaty tracks composing Sanctify The Darkness will now attack the Americas, who are always prime for a pungent new thrash unit to infiltrate and go on the rampage. Denim and leather-clad bullet-belt rockers of the land everywhere are surely ready to embrace the jaw-clenching riff attacks and swift thrash justice SUICIDAL ANGELS execute.
The North American version of Sanctify The Darkness will include two bonus music videos for album tracks “Apokathilosis” and “Beyond The Laws of Church”.

The album alsodebuted at #19 on the Neilsen SoundScan LOUD Chart in Canada.
Finnish power metallers STRATOVARIUS continue work on the follow-up to 2009’s Polaris. Singer Timo Kotipelto checks in with BraveWords.com from the studio. “Right now we are recording some new demos,” he reveals. “I think we have more than 20 songs sort of demoed out. I still have to sing the demo vocals, but all the other instruments are done, and in the next couple of weeks, I hope I’ll do that. But of course, the next week we’re going to go to China and do some gigs over there, so nothing is going to happen that week. But then the plan is to start recording the actual album later this year, and the album should come out… it’s hard to say, maybe early next year between January and May, somewhere in there. But that’s the plan. Hopefully there will be a new Stratovarius album then.”
So how would you describe the music?
“That’s a good question. Songs from Matias (Kupiainen – new guitarist) are more progressive, but then again, there is still some more traditional stuff. But the songs that will be on the final album, it’s hard to say. I think we are maybe following the path of the last album, but maybe more progressive stuff. We’ll see – I don’t know yet.”
Stratovarius’ brand new studio album will be released in early 2011 through JVC in Asia and Edel throughout the rest of the world. 2011 will see another Stratovarius world tour.
In other news, Stratovarius’ highly acclaimed Infinite album (from 2000) will be re-released on June 26th internationally after the band recently reacquired the rights to the album.
