H e X e N – “Thrash or get trashed”

March 18th, 2007
by Metal Rules

Andre Hartoonian – Vocalist and bassist of H e X e N

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

HeXeN, this 4-headed Thrash Metal monster, comes from Los Angeles, CA. It is absolutely impossible to not like this band if furiously and aggressively played old school Thrash Metal is something that forces your neck muscles to intensely headbang. FROM THE CRADLE TO THE CHAMBER, which is the band´s latest demo, has been received very well by both the fans of HeXeN as well as people behind different organizations – and it´s only a matter of time before the band will take their next big step toward a wider audience.

Andre Hartoonian, whom duties contain bass handling and screaming his lungs out in the band, reveals more about HeXeN through this interview, his thoughts about both the past and present of the metal scene, as well as what Dave Mustaine from Megadeth told him in person when he got this unique chance to meet him face-to-face…

WINGER – drummer Rod Morgenstein

March 8th, 2007
by Marko Syrjala

ROD MORGENSTEIN

Rod Morgenstein’s professional music career began as a founding member of the groundbreaking group the Dixie Dregs in the 70’s. His unique, dynamic and musical drumming style has led Rod to win many awards such as Best Progressive Rock Drummer award in Modern Drummer Magazines Readers Poll 5 years in a row. Later on he has worked with such names as the Steve Morse Band and Jordan Rudess but there’s no doubt that he’s best known from his work with 80’s multi platinum hard rockers Winger. The band released three albums before they wraped it up in late 1993.  Each member then went their separate ways to pursue individual goals. Kip Winger has released a number of solo albums, Reb Beach has worked with many projects and is now a member of the legendary Whitesnake, Paul Taylor did some commercials and projects and Rod himself became an Associate Professor of Percussion at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He has also been doing different projects all the time. In the middle of 2006 it was announced that Winger will be back with new album "IV" and a partly renewed lineup. Winger’s reunion tour reached Finland last October and then I had a chance to sit down with Mr. Morgenstein himself and ask about the latest news and have a look back at some good old times. ENJOY  !

F L E S H – Pete “Flesh” Karlsson

March 8th, 2007
by Metal Rules

Flesh guitarist Peter “Flesh” Karlsson

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

The Swedish Death Metal patrol Flesh continues the tradition of twisted, nasty, brutal and old school Death Metal. With the band´s 2nd album, titled TEMPLE OF WHORES, Pete “Flesh (aka Peter Karlsson)” leaves no compromises for what his solo project Flesh has been made of. That would be: Intrigueing rhytmns, hypnotic riffs, a blessing of an unholy ghost, evil and darkness. This is all that a devoted Death Metal fan is supposed to respect in old school Death Metal in general.

Pete talked to Metal-Rules.com in order to reveal more about this project band of his (not to forget his other both previous – and current bands from Maze of Torment to Thrown!), and made himself quite clear in the interview, that Flesh is here to stay with us at least ´til the end of humanity.

Now let´s unleash the great beast Pete himself and allow him to separate the flesh from the bones by telling us more accurately what this embodiment of morbidity called Flesh is all about…

NERLICH – Growler & Guitarist Miikka

March 2nd, 2007
by Metal Rules

Miikka talks – Growler & guitarist of NERLICH

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

There´s never enough a REAL old school Death Metal around these days, is there? Nerlich, a relatively young Finnish old school Death Metal band, by age at least, have truly understood the basic idea of what the two words “old school” really mean. They’ve understood this since they started churning out their heavy and crushing Death Metal in the fall of 2003. In Nerlich´s uncompromising Death Metal one is able to trace down similarities to bands such as Death, Gorguts, Pestilence, and Suffocation – yet Nerlich are able to create something that gives them their own trademark sound.

Nerlich´s debut album, DEFABRICATED PROCESS, was released via California-based Old School Metal Records in January 2007, and Metal-Rules.com wanted to inquire from the band´s main song writer, growler and guitarist, Miikka Merikallio, a thing or two about the album itself. As well, we find out what he thinks about how people will welcome and accept them as one of those rare Death Metal bands that still have ´THAT SOMETHING´ special characteristic in their sound – and what so many other bands unfortunately lack these days.

Ok now, to get this interview started…

BLESSED DEATH – Guitarists Jeff & Nick

February 15th, 2007
by Metal Rules

Blessed Death guitarists Nick Fiorentino and Jeff Anderson

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Talking about an underrated Thrash Metal band, New Jersey thrashers Blessed Death might well be one of those bands that recorded a couple of albums (KILL OR BE KILLED on Megaforce in 1985 and DESTINED FOR EXTINCTION on Roadrunner in 1987) in the ´80s -and almost vanished away from the metal scene without leaving any traces behind. It´s fair to say that Blessed Death managed to built up a solid fanbase in all those years they were spreading their unique Thrash-havoc everywhere on the globe.

The year 2006 had almost come to an end and surprisingly, like a bolt from a crystal-clear sky, a ´new´ Blessed Death album, titled HOUR OF PAIN, hit the markets. HOUR OF PAIN (which was originally supposed to titled BORN TO DIE) is actually that Blessed Death´s 3rd unreleased album that many knew they recorded, but it was never released… until now. What happened then? What killed the band eventually?

I got in touch with the original Blessed Death guitarists Nick Fiorentino and Jeff Andersen through the official Blessed Death forum, and an opportunity to interview the guys popped up. As the interest was already there for the interview, both Nick and Jeff agreed to do it for Metal-Rules.com. Read all about why Blessed Death split up in the beginning of ´90s, why it took 16 years to get their 3rd full-lenght album released, what are the chances for a Blessed Death reunion, what both Nick and Jeff think of today´s metal scene – and many other topics as well.

Ok, now let´s get started with…

Shadow Demon – Bassist James Rinker

February 9th, 2007
by Rick

Bassist James Rinker

Interviewed by EvilG

Shadow Demon are one of the more exciting new REAL metal bands to emerge from the US in a long time. The blend of thrash, melody, and power metal is presented seamlessly and will please fans of such bands as Persuader, Iced Earth and Testament. If this were the late 80’s, many might call this power metal, but today that term often refers to something else. Shadow Demon are more of an old school thrash band with vocals that are gruff yet melodic. When you dig beneath the surface of their brand of thrash, there is aggressive power metal and traditional metal to be found.

Napalm Death, DeathBound, The Scourger – Tavastia, Helsinki, Finland

February 3rd, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

Napalm Death
DeathBound, The Scourger
The 16th of January 2007
Tavastia Club
Helsinki Finland

By Arto Lehtinen

The legendary British grind core mongers, Napalm Death, haven’t visited Finland for years. The last time Napalm Death did a show, their guitarist, now late, Jesse Pintado was still in the ranks sharing the guitar duties on the stage.  For some weird reason, only a little bit over 100 maniacs had crawled out to testify the show back then. Years passed by till January 2007 when the grind core legends from Birgiham returned to the soil of Finland to cause an ultimate grinding rampage for the four date tour cross Finland. Of course, it was extremely thrilling to witness app. 600 true fans of grind core out to see Napalm Death in the middle of the week.

As usual a couple of Finnish bands had been booked to open and support on the tour. Frankly both the bands fit the bill more than perfectly.
