Interview With Gene Hoglan

Gene Hoglan

In a career that has spanned over twenty years, legendary drummer Gene Hoglan is a true pioneer of the heavy metal plains.  Dark Angel, Testament, Death, Strapping Young Lad?with jobs like this on his resume, chances are you have heard the bludgeoning skinsmanship of Hoglan.  Besides the big-name bands, Hoglan also dabbles in several side projects?both metal and non-metal?which allow him to branch out and explore the many facets of drumming.  Hoglan?s involvement with Devin Townsend both in his solo work and in Strapping Young Lad has been a relationship coming up on ten years with no signs of slowing down.

Strapping Young Lad unleashed their latest sonic assault, entitled ALIEN, back in March and I got the chance to speak with Hoglan on March 21st?the day before its release.  Having met Hoglan on many occasions at local Vancouver shows, our 95-minute conversation was loose and full of laughs but also packed with insight into his many projects both young and old, as well as touching on Internet rumors, ALIEN, the ?real? Devin Townsend, his audition with Slayer, and many other things?.

Hollywood Rocks ? The Boxed Set

June 15th, 2005
by Maureen

Cleopatra Records released ?Hollywood Rocks? book a short time ago that was promoted by the Hollywood Rocks tour featuring LA Guns. The label has followed this release with a 4-CD box set featuring songs from arguably the greatest hard rock era of its time. In the compilation you will find demos, b-sides, live and rare tracks from the bands that made Sunset Strip what it was – Dokken, Ratt, Jetboy and many, many others. With so many bands on this project, I decided to interview the man behind the release ? Cleopatra Record?s Tim Yasui who gave the lowdown on this new release. You can check out their website at www.cleorecs.com to get more information.

Jetboy?s Billy Rowe

June 10th, 2005
by Maureen

It?s been some time since Jetboy graced any stage with their brand of guitar-driven hard rock. But that will come to an end very soon as the band reunites for the first time in some 14 years to play at the Key Club to help promote the release ?Hollywood Rocks? boxed set that the band provides a track towards. The band never did acquire the fame and status of the Poisons and Warrants of their era, but they did develop a loyal fanbase during their years. I had the opportunity to speak with Billy Rowe who gave me some insight on their reunion gig and their future plans. You can check out www.jetboyrocks.com to get more information.

Grave, Sotajumala,, Delirium’s Order : The 6th of May 2005 Club Underground, Kouvola Finland

June 7th, 2005
by Arto Lehtinen

Grave, Sotajumala, Delirium?s Order
The 6th of May 2005
Club Underground, Kouvola Finland

The Swedish old school death metallers Grave emerged thru Finland in May by doing a small tour along with a couple of  Finnish outfits as opening acts. The tour stopped by to a small club named Club Underground in a small town called Kouvola, the club itself was a normal looking bar, but the gig had been set out in the damn tight and sweaty basement of the bar where app over 100 people had crawled to feel the brutality of death metal. The stage was also quite small and narrow leaving not that much for musicians to move there. But the atmosphere in the small basement was definitely metal as there were a couple of distributors selling their own and the dj played mainly the brutal death/black metal during the whole evening ala Bestial Mockery?.

Alex of PHILOSOPHER

June 6th, 2005
by Luxi Lahtinen

Intro and interview by Luxi Lahtinen

“Lovecraftian Death Metal…” – sounds like a fascinating title, doesn?t it? The German foursome, Alex, Mike, Christoph and Tobias call Philosopher a ?Lovecraftian Death Metal? band due to band?s strong interest in H.P. Lovecraft?s creations as far as the band?s lyrical approach is concerned. Musically, the Philosopher camp has a certain attraction to old school ?90s Death Metal in which people can associate them with bands like Death, Morgoth or even Morbid Angel. Plain copycatting has, however, luckily been avoided in Philosopher?s heavy and slowly creeping Death Metal approach and the band has already proved to stand out in its own, especially on the band?s debut album THOUGHTS which really shows what this talented German bunch is all about.

I talked to Alex ?Snakes?, the band?s guitarist, just recently and tried to gather together sort of an info kit what Philosopher is really all about as far as the band?s musical journey through the current Death Metal territory goes; basically finding out how they have been received by extreme Metal diggers and wanting to know a bit more what kinds of thoughts Alex has about Philosopher?s position amongst a countless amount of extreme Metal bands these days.

Uh, enough said for an introduction, now let?s get to the point finally?
