XYZ – Terry Ilous, Pat Fontaine, Joey Shapiro, Tony Marcus

July 9th, 2010
by Marko Syrjala

XYZ is a U.S based hard rock band formed in late 80’s. The original members were Terry Ilous (vocals), Bobby Pieper (guitars), Pat Fontaine (bass) and Joey Pafumi (drums). The band released its self titled debut in 1989 which included the band’s hit singles "Inside Out" and "What Keeps Me Loving You" which both got airplay on MTV and other Medias outlets at that time. The band’s sophomore album HUNGRY was released in 1991 but unfortunately it failed to reach its predecessor’s success and some changes followed. Tony Burnett and Joey Shapiro replaced Pieper and Pafumi and the band then carried on touring until they split some time later in 1992. Since then the band has done some brief reunions with various incarnations and there was an album LETTER TO GOD released in 2003. Another XYZ reunion took its place in Rocklahoma 2009 and since then the band has been doing shows sporadically with a line-up which now consist of original members Terry Ilous and Patrick Fontaine along with longtime members Joey Shapiro and guitarist Tony Marcus. XYZ came to appear in Stockholm’s Rockout -festival last May and here are the results of our interesting conversation which includes various topics…

ANGRA Announce New Single Title and Reveal Cover Artwork

July 8th, 2010

ANGRA (Single) Arising Thunder

ANGRA (Single) Arising Thunder

ANGRA has officially announced the date for releasing the new single from their seventh studio album, “Aqua”. The song is “Arising Thunder” which will be uploaded on the official MySpace in the night from Friday July, 9th to Saturday 10th.

According to the guitarist Rafael Bittencourt, “’Arising Thunder’ is a strong, fast and captivating song. We didn’t want to choose the most commercial track. Our fans will certainly be impressed with its fury and speed that end up in one of the strongest refrains of our entire career. It describes clearly the water element cycles showing the tenuous line from the tempest to the calm”.

The vocalist Edu Falaschi, who created the initial concept of the track, says: “This song was originally composed to be a ballad but along the process I realized that it would be better to change for a Power Metal style. Fortunately I was right and this new direction is the most correct to represent the heart of the Shakespeare story! It is violent, dramatic and vigorous in the first lines of “The Tempest”! “Arising Thunder” sounds perfect to an epic start connected to the lyric by a vibrant way showing all the Prospero fury and vengeance wishes. I am sure that our fans will enjoy it and sing with us in our next tour”.
The “Arising Thunder” artwork concept, as well as the “Aqua” one, were developed by the renowned Brazilian artist Gustavo Sazes supervised by the guitarists Rafael Bittencourt e Kiko Loureiro.
After “Aqua” is officially released, ANGRA will start a new world tour. Contact Base2 Management by phone (+55.11.3673-2758) or e-mail ( to book a concert in your city.

There is death/doom and then there is BEYOND HELL’s The Sleeper Awakens. Featuring drummer Elektrokutioner (DECREPITAPH, FATHER BEFOULED, FESTERED, etc) and with guest appearances by Patrick Bruss of CRYPTICUS (who also mixed/mastered) and Slyof FONDLECORPSE, The Sleeper Awakens crunches, lurks, and spooks like HOODED MENACE, frequently twisting into romping death metal form. Yet the deeper into the abyss one goes the more dynamics are revealed, not the least of which is accomplished soloing and sections of pure dark majesty. And all of it chills to the bone! As if that weren’t enough, the album also includes the sold out …And Evil Crept Through EP (tracks 10 – 13), for a grand total of 13 cuts of face melting horror death and spine tingling doom.

The Sleeper Awakens was co-released by Dark Descent Records and Skeleton Plague Records.

The third of four portions of the new artwork for the as-yet-untitled DIMMU BORGIR album has been uploaded to the band’s MySpace page.

When asked if there’s a connection between the image on the new album and the character from Death Cult Armageddon, German artist / painter / graphic designer Joachim Luetke (Arch Enemy, Kreator, Sopor Aeternus) – who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria – responds: “The [older] character’s called The Wanderer.  Now, in retrospective, I feel that he’s always been the prophet, the herald of an age to come.  Now he’s roaming the world after mankind’s demise.  He’s the last of his kind.  Neither human nor god – the perfect link to the age of the elder gods.”

Luetke’s artwork and layout art also graced DIMMU BORGIR’s In Sorte Diaboli (2007) and Death Cult Armageddon (2003).

Over 101 musicians have contributed to the making of the new album, including Norwegian composer and Berklee College of Music summa cum laude alumnus Gaute Storaas, the 51 members of KORK (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra), and the 38-member Schola Cantorum Choir.

DIMMU BORGIR’s ninth studio album will be released in Germany on September 24th, in the rest of Europe on September 27th, and in North America on October 12th.
