Saxon Drummer Nigel Glockler

February 6th, 2006
by Marko Syrjala

NIGEL GLOCKLER

Nigel Glockler is probably best known of his long career as a drummer for legendary NWOBHM band Saxon. Nigel did his first tour with the band in 1981 as a temporary member when original drummer Pete Gill damaged his hand just days before starting a huge tour. Nigel soon became a permanent member and in the early 1982 Saxon released their highly acclaimed live album “THE EAGLE HAS LANDED” , which is still one of the best live albums ever released. At that point Saxon was on the top of their game. The line up which consisted of vocalist Biff Byford, guitarists Paul Quinn and Graham Olivier, bassist Steve Dawson and Nigel, released three classic albums: “POWER AND GLORY”, “CRUSADER” and “INNOCENCE IS NO EXCUSE” before problems started. In 1986 Dawson left the band and only one year later Nigel decided to leave himself and join the shortlived”supergroup” GTR. After various projects and recordings with such artists as Fastway, Nigel decided to re join Saxon in 1989 and together they did several albums and tours before health problems forced him to again leave the band in 1997. Since leaving Nigel hasn’t been able to play drums in many years but after a long rehabilitation and much training he got back working again and in 2004 he got up on stage and did a few songs as a special quest for Saxon at Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. That show was going to be the last show for Fritz Rainbow, who had replaced Nigel 1997, and at that point Jorg Michael (Stratovarius, ex- Running Wild) became the new drummer for Saxon. The band released the album “LIONHEART” in 2004 but in the middle of the tour Jorg announced that he was going to leave after the tour and re -join his old band Stratovarius. At this point the band decided to contact Nigel and ask him to rejoin band permanently. After some thinking and training Nigel decided to accept an invitation and give it a try.

I met Nigel last December in Stockholm right before Saxon show in Swedenrock festival annual kickoff event and here are the results of our discussion…

Gary Holt of Exodus

Gary Holt of EXODUS

Interview and live pics by Luxi Lahtinen

Lots of things have been going on in the Exodus camp since the band´s highly praised comeback album TEMPO OF THE DAMNED was released in 2004 via Nuclear Blast Records. The band lost their vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza on the eve of the band´s South American tour due to his other commitments in his life outside of Exodus. When the two other original Exodus members, Tom Hunting and Rick Hunolt, left Exodus due to different reasons in the same year, the band started struggling – leaving Gary Holt as the only original member left from the classic Exodus line-up. People started wondering whether Exodus´ so-called  ´second coming (or third, it depends on whether the band´s live record ANOTHER LESSON IN VIOLENCE, released in 1997, can be considered as the band´s 2nd coming or not?)´ would be over before it even had started.

Gary, however, didn´t loose faith for his life’s work, Exodus, and decided to pull the strings even tighter together in his fists and found Rob Dukes to replace Zetro on vocals, Lee Altus from the Frisco thrashers Heathen to replace Rick Hunolt for the 2nd guitar and no less than Paul Bostaph (ex-Forbidden, ex-Slayer) to replace Tom Hunting on the skinbasher´s stool. The band started rolling on the right tracks again and Exodus´ next album SHOVEL HEADED KILL MACHINE was put out with this particular line-up. For some, it never reached the same standards musically as TEMPO did, but for many, it was even better and more rewarding as far as the album´s material as a whole was concerned.

I met Gary in Helsinki on the 24th of November 2005 on the band´s on-going European tour with Hypocrisy and Keep of Kalessin, and got a chance talk him briefly about the new album, touring, celebrities, the first satanic band of all time Witchcraft Coven – and what exactly happened between Gary with his previous band mates.

Must Missa Drummer Suss

January 24th, 2006
by Arto Lehtinen

Interview by Arto Lehtinen

The Estonian black thrashers impressed me with their raw and skilled stuff some time ago. I am entirely blown away by their  Celtic Frost influenced sound so the interview with them was more than obvious. I came across the band’s drummer Suss and agreed to do an interview with Must Missa to cover several details about the band. Their latest output is called TARGET OF HATE  and is a must own for every old school metal freak. After the interview there are a few mp3 files included… Enjoy

Michael Angelo Batio

January 15th, 2006
by EvilG

Michael Angelo Batio
Interviewed by EvilG
Thanks to: Lord of the Wasteland for providing extra interview questions, Drew for hooking us up, and to Deb for making the interview happen.

Just about every metal guitarist knows at least something about Michael Angelo Batio. He is best known for his twin-necked, left and right-handed double-guitar which he both invented and was the first to play. This ambidextrous virtuoso is not just a one trick wonder however. He is arguably the fastest guitar player you’ll ever hear and when he wants to, can play some slow yet engaging leads. Non-guitar freaks might remember Michael from his stint with the outrageous band Nitro which seems to have garnered the band a sort of cult-like and legendary status. In this interview we talk to Michael about his new solo album, HANDS WITHOUT SHADOWS, guitar playing, Nitro, and more.

Circle II Circle – Vocalist Zak Stevens
Interviewed by EvilG

Transcription by Duke
Live Circle II Circle pics from Rockreport.be

Circle II Circle’s Zak Stevens attained international fame during his stint as vocalist with metal legends Savatage. Unlike former members of some bands, Zak did not burn any bridges when he decided to take his leave from Savatage. After a short time out of the spotlight, Zak returned with his new band, Circle II Circle. He used the songwriting partners of both Chris Caffery and Jon Oliva (Savatage) for the two albums that Circle II Circle has released. In this lengthy interview, we talk to Zak about his time in Savatage, leaving the band, and the sometimes bumpy road that has been Circle II Circle.
