Age Of Evil will be a new name for many of you, but this anonymity will soon be a thing of the past. Based in the United Sates, Age Of Evil are a four piece that is comprised of two sets of brothers, with the youngest a mere 15 years old. Far from a gimmick the members of Age Of Evil are accomplished players if their debut album LIVING A SICK DREAM is anything to go by. With an opening slot at the Bang Your Head Festival!!! (they have been asked to play again next year) a guest performance from Marty Friedman and industry assistance from Tom Gattis, Age Of Evil are certainly going about things in the right away. The entire band contributed to this interview so let’s gets things started with Garrett Ziff, the band’s drummer.

Floor Jansen is the vocalist for the Dutch melodic metal band, After Forever. Floor’s emotional vocals are something you not only hear, but feel, especially on the band’s newest self-titled album where the band has outdone themselves.  In this interview we talk to Floor about the music on the band’s latest album, the deeply personal nature of some of the lyrics on the album, and a range of other relevant topics.

Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot, ex-W.A.S.P

October 10th, 2007
by Marko Syrjala

FRANKIE BANALI

Frankie Banali is a legendary drummer who is best known for his work with Quiet Riot and W.A.S.P. Frankie joined Quiet Riot in 1983 prior to the band releasing their smash album METAL HEALTH. The album stormed up the U.S. charts; it even reached the number one spot and went platinum five times over in the process. It is worth a mention that Quiet Riot were the first heavy metal band to top the U.S charts. Unfortunately thier following albums CONDITION CRITICAL and QRIII didn’t reach the success of METAL HEALTH.  With the lack of success and several line -up changes the band slowly disbanded in 1988. Frankie started to work with W.A.S.P. HEADLESS CHILDREN was released in late 1988 and it was a big success. Frankie did a world tour with W.A.S.P and later on he worked on numerous W.A.S.P albums including CRIMSON IDOL which was another milestone in W.A.S.P’s career. Quiet Riot was reformed in 1993 and after several discussions Frankie decided to rejoin his old mates. Since re -joining Frankie has been the driving force behind Quiet Riot. The band released their latest album "Rehab" in 2006 and now in 2007 they finally arrived here in Scandinavia, for the very first time in their career. At the Swedenrock festival I managed to sit down with Frankie himself to talk about the long history of Quiet Riot, his involvements with W.A.S.P, his work with Glenn Hughes and various other interesting topics…

Wacken 2007

October 9th, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

Wacken Open Air 2007

Wacken is a blessed mecca of the whole metal world. Again this year it was entirely sold out when ten thousands of metal manics travelled from all around the world to gather and witness plenty of ass kicking bands. The weather forecast for Wacken didn’t look that promising. The chaotic and muddy mess caused by long and heavy rains rampaged the ground during the whole summer. The  festival often provides a survival test to every visitor with its mud and crap. But but gods of metal had seen the light and blessed the whole three day metal inferno with tremendous extreme heat and a sunny weekend. Things could not be better…sun, metal and beer. That combination is nothing but an utter perfect way to enjoy the metallic mayhem at Wacken.

As usual, the true metal commando team from Metal-Rules.Com was there again witnessing a helluva lot of great bands and above all an unexpected huge fire in the main area. Feel, see and enjoy this article.

I caught up with Unearth vocalist Trevor Phipps recently to discuss the band’s upcoming headlining tour with Darkest Hour, August Burns Red and Suicide Silence, as well as their DVD shoot, the drummer situation, the “metalcore” tag and his thoughts on being a “savior” of North American metal.

Live Review and Photo’s by Celtic Bob

After a 9 year hiatus Monster Voodoo Machine returned to the stage. The infamous sawblade behind them as they ripped through a solid set of classic tunes. The crowd was stoked for this full on, high energy show and never let up until afterwards. Doom was clearly at the controls and we saw the Demon rise!!!

DevilDriver Vocalist Dez Fafara

September 27th, 2007
by Lord of the Wasteland

Interview & All Live Photos By Lord of The Wasteland; Promo Pics Courtesy of Roadrunner Records

Transcription By Claudia

Many readers’ first exposure to Dez Fafara may have been in the late nineties when he was fronting nu-metal band Coal Chamber but after that group disbanded in 2002, Fafara ventured out on his own with his new group, DevilDriver.  On their just-released third album, THE LAST KIND WORDS, DevilDriver combine heavy grooves with dark lyrics and some impressive guitar melodies that have sprung up here and, to a lesser extent, on 2004’s THE FURY OF OUR MAKER’S HAND.

A few hours before the band was scheduled to hit the stage for the Hartford, Connecticut stop of Ozzfest 2007, I spoke to Fafara about THE LAST KIND WORDS, the merits of the Hammond B3 organ, turning forty, spirituality and kicking the ass of Venom singer, Cronos.

Mike Browning – After Death, ex-Incubus, ex-Morbid Angel, etc.

September 23rd, 2007
by Metal Rules

Mike Browning

After Death, ex-Acheron, ex-Nocturnus, ex-Incubus, ex-Morbid Angel, etc.

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen & Arto Lehtinen
Intro by Luxi Lahtinen

MEGA-thanks to Andy Osborn for the transcription

First off, please do note everybody this IS NOT any of the recent interviews made with Mike Browning (After Death, ex-Nocturnus, ex-Morbid Angel, etc.), but an interview that was conducted with him in 2003 already, 4 long yet tormenting years ago.

So, why was this interview with him published 4 years later may some of you rightfully ask? To make a long answer to short one: Due to a number of unexpected reasons; mainly because of some unfortunate circustances what happened to the interview discs right after they were sent to the transcription for the first time – and what happened after that (the dics getting lost, etc.). It would be very easy to make scapegoats for this enormous delay of getting this huge interview of Mike Browning out, but it wouldn´t serve anyone´s interest, or purpose anyway.

However, even if some of the information is obviously badly outdated in this interview (especially for After Death), we thought to publish it here in Metal-Rules.com without shortening it a bit, but put it out in its entirety the way it was meant to be published originally, back in 2003. Mike Browning provided a lot of in-depth information for this very interview that just never gets outdated – telling many very informative things about the past times with his other bands prior to After Death. Also, since Mike put so huge amounts of effort and time into answering the interview questions, we sincerely thought the only right thing to do, was to get this interview released some day, no matter what.

Now let Mike quide all of us through the early days of Morbid Angel to Incubus to Nocturnus, etc. In fact, this is more like a story about Mike Browning, and we can quarantee you it´s absolute a great read! Now enjoy this long ride under Mike´s very expert guidance…!

Katatonia / Scar Symmetry / Insomnium / Swallow the Sun – Live in NYC: 09/06/07

September 22nd, 2007
by Greg Shackles

September 6, 2007

BB King’s

New York, NY

* Live Review and Photos by Shaq

With easily one of the best tour packages I can remember in support, it was time for Katatonia to launch their first ever headlining tour of North America.  It wasn’t too long ago that they were supporting Moonspell in what was another well built tour package.  Along for the ride this time were Swallow the Sun and Insomnium, both hailing from Finland, as well as their fellow Swedes in Scar Symmetry.  I guess sometimes Finns and Swedes can get along!  To say I was excited for this lineup would be the understatement of the year.  Without a single bad or local band on the bill, it was certain to be a good night for metal.

After a lengthily journey to the states to see one of my all-time favorite bands Poison: I arrived mid afternoon to an somewhat empty parking lot. I was psyched to see them again and I was equally excited to see Ratt for the first time ever. This was going to be a great event.
