Katatonia has been relentlessly touring across Europe in support of their 2009 full-length release, Night is the New Day, which sold over 2,000 copies in the US in its first week.  The band also released an EP, ‘The Longest Year’, earlier this spring.  The latest music video for the EP’s title track can be viewed at: http://www.nightisthenewday.com/.            Now the band is set to unleash their brand of melancholy metal on North America, headlining the MetalSucks.net sponsored, “Night Over North America” tour.  A teaser trailer for the tour can be seen at: http://www.vimeo.com/12823455.

DAATH Post New Track Online; New Webisode Focusing On The Album’s Synth Tracking

September 8th, 2010
by EvilG

Extreme metal at its very best, plain and simple, is what the Atlanta based quintet DAATH delivers. The group’s highly anticipated third full-length release is going to be self-titled and is set for an Oct. 26th North American release. The disc is a face melting masterpiece that was co-produced by the renowned Mark Lewis (Trivium, Devildriver) and Eyal Levi (guitars). Check out blistering new track, “Destruction Restoration,” now at www.myspace.com/daath.

Emil Werstler (guitars) states: “The track ‘Destruction/Restoration’ was an obvious choice when it came down to which song we wanted to debut. It flexes a little progressive muscle and has a few sharp turns transitionally. It is an aggressive and to the point song that does not expose very much or drop any hints of what to expect from the record. Some of the main ideas of the song are early 90’s Florida death metal influenced while the chorus is much more melodic, which makes the song unique.”

Metal Mark from Skulls ‘N’ Bones recently spent some time in the studio with the band and compiled a video series documenting the recording process, so click on the link below now to check out the fifth installment featuring the synth tracking sessions.
Eyal Levi (guitars) further states: “Never say never. We made a decision in 2008; which was that if we were to ever include synth/keyboards in a major way on a future DAATH record, that it would have to be completely different and far superior, in our opinion, to anything we’ve ever done with the instrument, as well as add a new dimension to the bigger picture. The role of the guitar in the overall sound of the band has grown far past what it used to be and it would be an insult not only to the music itself, but also to our fans to not reintroduce the synth aspect of our sound in an equally evolved way.

“Our friend and collaborator, Eric Guenther (From Exile, Levi/Werstler), contributed all of the synth, piano, and keyboards to the new DAATH album. It was a natural fit. We’ve been friends for years and a good part of that friendship has included musical collaboration. From full albums to late night drunken jams the guy has become part of our circle of crazy musicians. The guy has methods and styles all of his own. He’s managed to find a way to use synthesizers in a way that compliments the overall sound of a raging metal band while remaining musical the entire time.”

Currently the group is more determined, energized and focused than ever before and is continuing to expand upon their unique, uncompromising and dynamic sound. For those previously uninitiated, feel free to head over to www.myspace.com/daath to see what they are all about.

3 INCHES OF BLOOD Debut New “Silent Killer” Video (Banned By MTV)

September 8th, 2010
by EvilG

The biggest defenders of traditional heavy metal, 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, have teamed back up with acclaimed director Rick Podd (The Watcher, Hellraiser), who previously shot their “Battles and Brotherhood” video, to shoot a new clip for the track “Silent Killer.” The video has been banned by MTV for its bloody content, so therefore the fine folks at Bloody Disgusting are now set to exclusively debut this clip. Click on the link below to check it out now.

Shane Clark (guitars) states: “The concept of the song is about an assassin, so naturally we first thought of a concept featuring an assassin going around doing what they do, but in a style that is more influenced by movies that we liked. At first we thought about a simple performance style video but we’ve done that a few times and this seemed like a much more entertaining thing for us and our fans. Therefore, we brainstormed a bunch of ideas with Rick Podd and thought of our own killing scenes. I wanted to get poisoned and puke blood and vomit all over the place, and after that it was all in the hands of Rick. I really had a good time with the acting stuff; it was great to work with Chris Valago as well. Some know him as the Heathen from Zimmer’s Hole, he’s the big FX banana in the Vancouver TV & Film industry, more importantly he’s a good friend of mine so we got to sit and plan out the puking at great length, I’m really happy with how that turned out. As for the entire final product, I’m very happy with it, having everyone work together on something and have it turn out great is really satisfying.”

3 INCHES OF BLOOD just wrapped up a very successful run on this summer’s Mayhem Fest and have posted a video online that documents their daily activities as a part of this event. Click on the link below now for a special all access look into the life of a band on a traveling summer festival. Stay tuned to www.myspace.com/3iob for news on a big fall tour announcement to be made soon.

The group’s latest album, Here Waits Thy Doom, was also recently reissued as a Mayhem Tour edition with four exclusive new tracks along with a bonus DVD featuring their video for “Battles and Brotherhood,” their performance on Fuel TV and more.

Guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn of San Francisco Bay Area group MACHINE HEAD suffered a severe invasion of personal property yesterday, September 7th, as thieves broke into his home between 1:15pm and 3:15pm PST. Flynn and his family were not present during the invasion, and many priceless items were stolen from his home. These items include the guitar that Flynn recorded MACHINE HEAD’s first album, Burn My Eyes, with, a gifted guitar from late PANTERA guitarist Dimebag Darrell (pictured above), and Flynn’s son Zander’s mini Flying V; a gift he received from his family for Christmas. Other items stolen include Flynn’s wife’s jewelry, laptops, wakeboards, and cash.

“I am offering a $1,000 reward for the return of the black Ibanez Strat along with many stickers, a ‘Designated Drinker’ sticker,” announces Flynn. “Additionally, I am offering a $2,000 reward for the safe return of the blue Washburn Dimebolt prototype.

“An APB has been put out to every Guitar Center in Northern California and the police were able to get several fingerprints off of the two acoustics that the thieves handled, yet bizarrely left behind. Sightings of two suspicious vehicles have been reported, one a green/teal U.S.-make pickup truck, the other a white full-size work van.

“If anyone sees or hears of anything on Craigslist, eBay, at their guitar shop… anything, anywhere, Please contact us at mike@machinehead1.com immediately.”

In a recent interview with Goldmine Magazine journalist Pat Prince, ACCEPT guitarist Wolf Hoffmann discusses the classic ACCEPT sound, working with Andy Sneap, lighting Flying Vs on fire, and the next ACCEPT album.  He also discusses bumping into former lead vocalist Udo Dirkschneider at the Masters of Rock festival recently and reminisces about a career-highlight show in 1984 at L’Amour’s in Brooklyn, New York.

Do you feel liberated a little bit with this new lineup, it being so exciting?
Hoffmann: I mean, of course. Especially after the initial criticism of a lot of people saying it could never be done. We feel real vindicated and relieved. That makes us feel good despite all the critics. I’m not making this album as a personal vendetta against anybody. We just want to make good music, you know. At the end of the day, we just wanted to go out and do our stuff because that is what we love to do.

Sneap made the record a good balance. It recaptures the old ACCEPT sound but it’s in-tune with today.
Hoffmann: Yeah, it has a modern sound, so that’s good. He made sure we had that 2010 sound, but we have all the characteristics of the past. All the good riffs and the gang vocals. He also didn’t want it to be too happy or too commercial. He kind of pushed us a little more into the dark side of things, which I think worked out really well. Overall, it was still us writing the songs. But it was a very good collaboration.

And live, you always seems to sound so perfect and crisp. Does that have to do with you guys being tech and sound geeks? Not a lot of bands are able to replicate their sound like that.
Hoffmann: Never heard that comment like that but it’s nice because that’s what we are trying to do. It’s got something to do with the way we place the guitar sounds in the mix, maybe. And we have a certain style with the riffs that we play and a certain sound that we love. And it all comes across in the end.

Read the entire interview here.

Blood Of The Nations was recorded at Backstage Studio in England with famed producer Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Exodus, Opeth, Arch Enemy) and will be released in North America on September 14th.  Exclusive pre-sale bundles can be purchased at the Nuclear Blast Web Store.

MARDUK To Join Blackest Of The Black Tour 2010

September 8th, 2010
by EvilG

Swedish black metallers MARDUK will return to the U.S. this fall as part of the coveted Blackest Of The Black tour, founded by Danzig frontman/legend Glenn Danzig in 2003 as a way to promote extreme bands of his choosing from around the globe. Past Blackest Of The Black tours have included Dimmu Borgir, Moonspell, Skeletonwitch and Nile.  The 2010 edition will kick off on October 25 and wind its way through over a dozen cities before coming to a close in mid November. Additional support will be provided by Possessed, Toxic Holocaust and Withered.

MARDUK have been touring the globe in support of Wormwood, their eleventh studio album released last October via Regain Records. Wormwood found its way to  the top of year end lists both domestically and abroad and continues to reap praise among listeners nearly a year after its release . Decibel Magazine gave it a 9/10 review saying, ”Wormwood…drives home grim nails of varying shapes and sizes – all black ones of course…repeated listens reveal deeper abysses.” Blabbermouth commended the band for, “…an atmosphere that continues to be cold and uncomfortably morose, made even more sinister by a bass tone that is not only thick and audible, but also value-additive,” while KNAC.com said, “along with Mortuus’ obtuse lyrics and guttural, phlegmy vocals, MARDUK‘s surprisingly crafty compositions…and deft use of effects — as opposed to rote orchestration — give them an air of sophistication and guile you don’t often find in black metal.” Added Kerrang in a review of their New York City performance last year: “…grim as fuck, they knuckle down and pound out barrage after barrage of searing, slicing black metal evil…”

Confirmed dates thus far include:

Rush: 2112 & Moving Pictures Classic Albums' - On DVD and Blu-ray September 28

Rush: 2112 & Moving Pictures Classic Albums' - On DVD and Blu-ray September 28

Eagle Rock Examines Two Of Prog-Rock’s Most Powerful Albums:
Dual Release on DVD and Blu-ray
~September 28, 2010~

It’s been a banner year for the award-winning Classic Albums series. The most recent editions explore ground-breaking releases by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Black Sabbath. The latest edition tackles not one, but TWO epic albums from progressive rock powerhouse Rush. Rush: 2112 & Moving Pictures Classic Albums will be simultaneously released on DVD and Blu-ray via Eagle Rock Entertainment’s Eagle Vision subsidiary on September 28. [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]

Continuing the tradition of this celebrated series, 2112 & Moving Pictures Classic Albums carries us through the creation of these musical masterpieces via brand new interviews, demonstrations, archive videos, and use of the original multi-track tapes. The titan trio of bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer Neil Peart, joined by original producer Terry Brown, weigh in on the mammoth melodies, resounding riffs, and dynamic drum fills behind these immense aural soundscapes. Many others contribute to the commentary, such as Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and acclaimed Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke. 112 minutes in total, this DVD digs even deeper with 50 minutes of bonus material not included in the upcoming VH1 Classic broadcast (airing September 8 at 9:30pm and September 9 at 8:30am and 12:30pm).

These legendary albums mark pivotal points in Rush’s career. 2112, released in 1976, broke the band into major music chart domination, going #1 in their native Canada and in the Top 75 in the USA, where it was certified triple platinum. Moving Pictures added fuel to their rising stardom, opening them up to a mass audience with heavy-hitting hits like “Tom Sawyer.” Going #1 and quadruple platinum in Canada, as well as hitting #3 in the USA and the UK, this 1981 release remains their biggest selling album to date. Rush is currently performing this album in its entirely on their “Time Machine” tour. Rush: 2112 & Moving Pictures Classic Albums is a perfect encapsulation of what made these albums successful, and why they are revered to this day.

“Christmas will be a little earlier this year, ‘cause The Guardian is coming to town in November and December!  The band is really excited to announce this upcoming tour.  Finally, we will get the chance to preach our Sacred Words and play our Songs Divine somewhere near your neighborhood.  We have prepared a nice package of music and bands for our Northern American followers.  Our friends from Holy Grail and Seven Kingdoms will join us on this glorious mission and will have their part in these magical nights to come.  Both bands are underground now, but I can feel that the future is theirs. They really carry the spirit of a new American Power Metal generation.  Touring the U.S. and Canada does always means a tremendous amount of fun, so we are really anxious to see if the people in Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Albuquerque – where we have not played before – can scream as loud as their brothers and sisters in New York, Quebec, Toronto, or Hollywood.  We’ll soon find out when we meet you at the edge of time.

“Of course, we have to arrange some time in between playing and traveling for some Christmas gift shopping.  I am sure I will find plenty of cool Star Wars action figures and I am already aware of some great Christmas shops near Washington where I will be able to get some great atypical Christmas tree ornaments.  Strange worlds we are living in: The funniest ones sometimes have been produced in Germany, where you can’t  get them in stores, so the U.S./Canada trip definitely pays off.

“As for books: Last time we ended up in Portland for a day, and whether I’ll make it to Powell’s (City of) Books, you never know.  All in all, I have far too many books which I  have not yet read, but I am constantly working on it.  Since I am getting older and the saying is: “The older you get, the less sleep you need,” I am very optimistic I will manage to read them all when the nights are getting shorter.”

Swedish guitarist Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR, STARBREAKER, LAST TRIBE) has finished laying down his parts for the forthcoming solo album from Ralf Scheepers of German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR. According to a posting on the PRIMAL FEAR web site, “Magnus delivered his guitar parts on some songs of the album and did a killer job as always. Just some more lead guitars are missing by some other great players and we’re ready to mix the album after the forthcoming [PRIMAL FEAR] European tour!”

As previously reported, powerhouse American vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens (HAIL!, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) will make a guest appearance on Scheepers’ forthcoming CD. Owens will be heard dueting with Scheepers in the track “Remission Of Sin”. Other guest musicians expected to appear on the album include Swedish multi-instrumentalist Snowy Shaw (DIMMU BORGIR, THERION, DREAM EVIL, KING DIAMOND, MERCYFUL FATE) on drums, Sander Gommans (AFTER FOREVER, HDK) on guitar and PRIMAL FEAR’s Mat Sinner playing bass on the entire LP and producing. A photo shoot with Alex Kuehr for the CD’s cover took place in early July in Germany.

In a recent interview with the “Metalzone” radio show (web site) with Kostas Purevil Kyriakakis and Helena Mihailidou, Scheepers revealed that his upcoming solo album will include a remake of his song “Saints Of Rock” from Scheepers’ pre-PRIMAL FEAR band TYRAN PACE and a cover version of “Before The Dawn’ from JUDAS PRIEST. “‘Saints Of Rock’ is gonna be, of course, a little bit more modern than it was [when the original version was recorded] in 1986,” he explained. “I mean, right now we have much more possibilities to make songs sound a little bit more modern, starting with the drum sound and the bass sounds — having a much more distorted sound.” He added, “I think ‘Before The Dawn’ pretty much is a [straight] cover — [there’s] just a little more orchestral things going on, I have more strings in the song compared to the JUDAS PRIEST [original]. Back then there wasn’t much strings going on. I think they even have a piano [in the original version], which I don’t have. I have strings and I have this atmosphere stuff going on. Vocal-wise, I just added a harmony at the last bridge before last chorus, I added a harmony which is not on the original, but that’s the basic difference.”

In a June 2010 interview with Metal Assault, Scheepers stated about the musical direction of his forthcoming solo CD, “It’s more diverse [than PRIMAL FEAR], you can say.” He added, “In the beginning I had those ballads that we couldn’t use for PRIMAL FEAR because they might be too mellow, but now we’ve started to write together on it. Basically, it’s my ideas on it, but I have a great team, with Mat and Magnus and some other members — Sander [Gommans], the ex-AFTER FOREVER guitarist, helped me a lot. It’s a good variety — from the hardest to the softest tones.”

PRIMAL FEAR recently released a new live DVD, “16.6 – All Over The World” (recorded in various locations between September and November 2009), and a live CD, aptly titled “Live In The USA”.
