Wacken Open Air 2006

October 16th, 2006

Brat: It was a year filled with tradition as the 17th Wacken Open Air offered us something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

Old bands came in from hard and long slogs, reunions and reformations—Scorpions, Mortal Sin, Celtic Frost, Carnivore, Morbid Angel, Ministry and Rose Tattoo.

Organisers introduced a compulsory 15 Euro metal bag filled with handy goodies (a blow up drink holder, raincoat, torch and of course, garbage bag, in a lightweight drawstring bag that doubled as a mini backpack) printed with the longhorn logo in an attempt to reduce the garbage left on the campsite at the end of the festival. In theory, when you returned a filled garbage bag to the depot, 5 Euro was refunded, but somehow our car didn’t seem to receive the mystery token which “authenticated” the garbage, depriving us of our 5 Euro “deposit”. The new overbridge connecting the festival and press areas constantly tested people’s sobriety. If nothing else, my butt and leg muscles got a great workout over the three days.

October 13th, 2006

INTERVIEW WITH MANDY MEYER

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PHOTOS BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ
TRANSCRIPTION BY DUKE

Canadian born Armand “Mandy” Meyer was born at 1960 in Saskatchewan. Some years later his family moved to Switzerland where he started his musician career in the late seventies. Now, years later, his list of credits includes work with such names as ASIA, Gotthard, House Of Lords, and Katmandu. At present, Mandy is playing in the legendary Swiss band Krokus. Although he worked with Krokus in the early eighties (two years touring), it wasn’t until last year that he kind of returned in fold when he replaced founding member Fernando von Arb, who had just parted ways with the band. Last year was a busy time for Mandy and Krokus. There has been a lot of touring, including the bands first USA tour in a long time. Last month Krokus released a brand new studio album called HELLRAISER.This interview was done in June 2006 at the Swedenrock festival and then we had this nice conversation about the new album, Krokus tour, his past bands, as well as many other interesting topics. Hope you like it!

WASP Live in FINLAND

October 11th, 2006
by Marko Syrjala

24.9 2006

Live at House of Culture, Helsinki FINLAND

Blackie Lawless formed WASP in the early eighties together with Randy Piper, Chris Holmes and Tony Richards. The band’s first EP “Animal “F*** Like A Beast” was released in 1983 and it was an instant success world wide. The band established a reputation as a ferocious live act, thanks to having naked beauties in a torture rack on stage and throwing raw meat into the audience during the show. The self titled debut album included such classics as “I Wanna Be Somebody”, “L.O.V.E Machine”, “Sleeping In The Fire” and “Hellion” which all are true heavy metal classics. In the following years the band released the albums “The Last Command”, “Inside The Electric Circus” and “Headless Children” before they went on hiatus around 1990. “The Crimson Idol” was released in 1993 with Blackie being the only original member. 1997 saw the release of “K.F.D” and a brief re-union with Chris Holmes. Since then WASP has released two live albums, five studio albums and has been almost constantly on tour. Although their record sales are far from the glory days, people still are interested to see them play live.Tonight’s show at House of Culture was sold out with the sales of 1500 tickets and on the current tour the band sold altogether almost 6000 tickets in Finland.

Once again I had the opportunity to chat with the notorious Lord K from God Among Insects who recently unleashed their stunning second album entitled ZOMBIENOMICON. The last time I talked to Lord K was when I interviewed him for his other band The Project Hate.

So for the first time in Metal-Rules.com, here´s some sort of an info package what you possibly want to know about God Amongst Insects.

Kreator – Mille Petrozza

October 4th, 2006
by Luxi Lahtinen

Mille Petrozza of Kreator

Interview, live and interview pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

Nummirock Festival, located basically in the middle of forests, near by one small lake (or more commonly put, located in the middle of nowhere which most of you want me to say anyway, ha!), celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. The organizers of the festival had booked a bunch of interesting metal acts to the bill of this 2-day festival, off which bands like Kreator, Deicide, Hypocrisy, Amorphis, Samael, Marduk, Tarot and Korpiklaani surely gave metalheads a good enough reason to invest their hard-earned savings in for this particular summer happening. Only one negative setback was announced at the very last minutes as Deicide had to pull out from the festival due to some ?ugly? financial issues with the gig booking agency, being responsible for their tour in the European ground (which sadly resulted in the cancellation of the whole European tour for Deicide). That was already the second attempt from Deicide to play in Finland for the very first time, but every time they have had to cancel their shows. Well, that time will come for them eventually for sure when they will finally get a chance to play in front of their very supportive Finnish metal maniacs… ;o)

One of the finest German Thrash Metal combos ever, Kreator, luckily didn?t have to cancel their live appearance at the Nummirock Festival this year though. The band proved to be in a fine, energetic strike in a live situation at the festival, and the support from the crowd was upliftingly enormous toward Kreator. The band has always been greatly welcomed by the Finnish metalheads – no matter where they have played in Finland.

Metal-Rules.com caught up with Mille from Kreator at the backstage area right before the band was about to get confronted with their fanatical (mostly) Finnish audience, and basically asked about what?s going on in the Kreator -camp; when to expect new material from the band, Mille?s endorsement deal with the Moser guitars, etc. – and what Mille actually did on Saturday evening on 20th, May 2006…

Riot Guitarist Flies Solo

Interviewed by Keith MacDonald

Most metal fans are well aware of the band Riot and all the accomplishments that they have had in their long career. Guitarist Mike Flyntz has decided to branch out on his own and has released a solo album with a little help from his friends now available through his website. Faith and Fire has been long in the works as Mike has been busy with the new release of Riot’s studio album as well as other projects. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Mike who gave me some insight into this new release.

Warrel Dane – Nevermore Vocalist

September 27th, 2006
by Luxi Lahtinen

Warrel Dane of Nevermore

Interview, live + interview pictures by Luxi Lahtinen & Kapa Kilgast

Transcription by Wyatt Marshall

Nevermore?s latest studio album, THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR, has been gaining rave reviews from critics all around the world so it shouldn?t come as a surprise to anyone that they are considered  one of the biggest and most important bands for their own label, Century Media Records nowadays. The band?s journey through the years has been victorious for them since the day Nevermore was started from the remains of another short-lived, but successful group, Sanctuary.

Nevermore?s journey continued victoriously to Finland where the band played a special headline show at the Tavastia Club, Helsinki on 8th of September 2006, right before their tour with Disturbed and the DVD recording show in Bochum, Germany (which was unfortunately cancelled due to an infection of the band?s vocalist, Darrel Wane).

We met Warrel at the Restaurant Ilves in the downtown of Helsinki just a few hours before their first ever show in Finland, and had 20 minutes on our hands to inquire briefly from Warrel about the ongoing tour in general, the Sanctuary years, his solo project together with Peter Wichers (ex-Soilwork) – amongst other things, too…

Saxon’s Nibbs Carter and Paul Quinn

September 26th, 2006
by Marko Syrjala

INTERVIEW WITH PAUL QUINN AND NIBBS CARTER

The legendary Saxon doesn’t need too much introduction here but I will do it briefly anyway. Saxon, who originally called themselves Son of a Bitch, was formed in1977 by vocalist Biff Byford, guitarists Graham Olivier and Paul Quinn, bassist Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill. Their early albums “Denim and Leather”, “Wheels of Steel” and “Strong Arm Of The Law” are heralded as some of the most important NWOBHM classics. A ground breaking live album “The Eagle Has Landed” was released in 1983 and still today, along with such classic as Motorheads “No Sleep At All”, it’s often mentioned as one of the most important live releases from that period. Since those days the band has gone through many ups and downs. There has been a great number of line -up changes, problems with record companies, problems with former band members and low record sales but on the other hand over the last few years they have succeeded to reach a new, strong and loyal fanbase who have helped them to re-create their glory days. Their recent albums “Lionheart”, Killing Ground” and “Metalhead” are modern heavy metal classics and are also living proof that Saxon is alive and well. Recently the band released a brand new live album “The Eagle Has Landed III” which continues the saga which originally started in 1983. I managed to catch Paul Quinn and Nibbs Carter after their great show in Ruisrock and here is the transcription of our lengthy causerie, hope you like it?
