Megadeth in Stockholm, Sweden

Review by Marko Syrjala and Jarno Huovila

In 2004, just as the sparkle of hope glowed dim, Dave Mustaine struck back with the excellent new album ‘The System Has Failed’, which especially after the less than stellar ‘The World Needs A Hero’ release, was a most welcome return to the high standard of song writing that we’ve come to expect from Dave. After the album release Mustaine surprisingly announced that the forth coming tour will be definitely be their last ever. Now they are now midst of their farewell tour called "Blackmail The Universe" and we were lucky to witness bands brilliant performance in Stockholm.

The Internet and print magazines have been abuzz over one album recently?Mercenary?s 11 DREAMS.  The Danish band unleashed this sonic behemoth in Europe last summer but February 8th sees the release of 11 DREAMS in North America.  Following the lead of almost universal critical approval from the Europeans, 11 DREAMS appears to be headed down the same path as the rave reviews and accolades continue to pour in (don?t miss the reviews of 11 DREAMS here at Metal Rules) setting the album up with a surefire place among writers? year-end lists.

On the morning of 11 DREAMS North American release date (Febraury 8th), I chatted with vocalist/bassist Henrik ?Kral? Andersen about the new album, how the band is handling all the critical praise, the new lineup, the ready-to-explode Danish metal scene and just where exactly he got the nickname ?Kral??

Robbie Crane, like everyone else in Adler’s Appetite, is one of the coolest guys you’d ever hope to meet, especially in the world of rock music. We sat with the bass player for the better part of an hour and discussed his newest band Adler’s Appetite, his ongoing involvement with Ratt, as well as his times with Vince Neil. Soilwork Guitarist Peter Wichers

February 12th, 2005
by Lord of the Wasteland

Interview By Lord of The Wasteland

**Live Pics By Lord of The Wasteland; all others courtesy Soilwork.org

Helsingborg, Sweden?s Soilwork are among the most prolific and popular bands of the last few years.  In their relatively short seven year existence, the band has released six albums under critical praise and made a name for themselves on North American shores with 2002?s NATURAL BORN CHAOS.  Extensive touring and label support has exposed the band to many different audiences and the push is on for the latest Soilwork platter, STABBING THE DRAMA, to infiltrate the metal masses when it is released on March 8th.

A recent U.S. transplant, Soilwork guitarist/founder, Peter Wichers, called me to discuss the new CD, the band?s drummer problems and his thoughts on headlining their first American tour.

Angtoria: Symphonies of Slickness

February 11th, 2005
by Rick

?Symphonies of Slickness?
An Interview with Angtoria by MetalGeorge

Pictures Courtesy of Angtoria.com

Whilst it does seem that symphonic, female-fronted metal IS all the rage these days, what with the surprising explosion of Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, and Evanescence here in the States and all.  However, in Europe the genre is exploding with more and more new bands popping up everywhere.  Standing head and shoulders above them all (including most of their upper eschalon contemporaries), however, are Swedish-British powerhouse Angtoria. Featuring Abyssos? Chris Renn and Cradle of Filth?s own Sarah Jezebel Deva, Angtoria provide all of the bombastic metal goodness with a emotional depth and melancholy missing from many happy-go-lucky Euro-metal bands currently peddling their wares.  It?s only a matter of time before Angtoria sweep fans of this style of their feet, so I figured it was time to dig up some information on this stellar rising talent! Watch this space!  Angtoria are gonna be huge!!

Pegazus, Dark Order, Vengeance Live In Australia

February 11th, 2005
by EvilG

Pegazus, Dark Order, Vengeance
Annandale Hotel, January 22, 2005

Live review and all photos by Brat

Has it really been two years since PEGAZUS played in Sydney? Did I miss a gig during one of my European adventures? Doesn?t time fly. After getting through what felt like a cerebral haemorrhage only two hours earlier, I picked up my little digital camera (I avoided my SLR as I still have 30 rolls of film to develop) and managed to drag myself to the gig. Ah, the wonders of modern drugs.

Mortal Sin : Interview with vocalist Mat Maurer and bassist Andy Eftichiou

February 9th, 2005
by Arto Lehtinen

Mortal Sin is one of the first thrash metal bands emerging from Down Under in the mid 80’s and unleashed a furious debut album MAYHEMIC DESTRUCTION. The album has reached a real cult status amongst the die old school thrash metal freaks. In 1989 the second output FACE OF DESPAIR saw the light of day and the Australian thrashers embarked on an European tour by opening for Testament, Faith No More and toured in The States. The internal feuds within the band caused the departure of the vocalist and finally a real split up. Bassist Andy Eftichiou carried on by hiring a new line-up and put out REBELLIUS YOUTH, but Mortal Sin vanished to the Australian large desert. Despite the band unleashed REVOLUTION OF THE MIND, but it led nowhere. Until 2002/2003 Mat Maurer, Andy Efthichou and Wayne Campbell resurrected the old band by recruiting new guitarists to the rank. It was about time to approach the vocalist of Mortal Sin Mat Maurer and bassist Andy Efthichou to ask more about the history as well as other interesting subjects……

Daniel Corchado of The Chasm

February 9th, 2005
by Rick

?Retribution Unleashed?
An Interview with Daniel Corchado of The Chasm

Interviewed by MetalGeorge

In the days where pre-processed, American-ized Death Metal is the latest flavour, Mexico?s The Chasm stand as a royally raised middle finger of old school metal pride.  With a sound that both hearkens back to such deathrash classics as ?Seven Churches? as much as it does modern dark metal savagery, The Chasm and their latest and greatest longplayer, ?The Spell of Retribution? are taking no prisoners and turning more than a few heads.  The band?s also gigging right now alongside Incantation, Arsis, and more, so  read on and acquaint yourself with one of the underground?s most underrated acts.

Calmsite drummer Jukka Penttinen

February 8th, 2005

?It A?int Noise Pollution?
Interview with Calmsite drummer Jukka Penttinen

Interviewed by MetalGeorge
Thanks to www.calmsite.com for promo pics!

Careening down the metal highway, Finland?s booze-addled rock ?n rollers Calmsite have release their debut full length, ?The Erector? via the American Oak Knoll Productions.  With a high energy sound that rides the line between Melodic Death and down home Hard Rock (think Gandalf?s ?Rock Hell? meets Sweden?s Demons of Dirt), ?The Erector? is a surprisingly fresh and exciting listen.  With the band?s up-tempo riffing and driving backbeat (complete with cowbell!), Calmsite are poised to make a mark.  With a new album on the way via Finland?s up and coming Firebox Records (licensed in the States via Oak Knoll), thing?s only look better for these Finnish bastards.  Though this is merely a short update on the band?s affairs, the fact that Calmsite is still an as-of-yet unknown band on these shores should make this little chat a worthwhile peek into a band that is beginning to make a name for themselves.

Former model Doro Pecsh formed a band Warlock in the early eighties and together they reached a great success worldwide until they called it quits by 1988, as Pesch launched a solo career. She has just released her new album called ?Classic Diamonds? and now after seventeen years she finally returned to play in Finland. This interview was done right before their show in Helsinki last November.
