DEMIGOD – Legendary Finnish Metallers

August 20th, 2007
by Metal Rules

Interview and live pics by Luxi Lahtinen

Let´s make a bold statement for starters: The legendary Finnish metallers, Demigod, have returned back to us – with a storm that has been named somewhat fittingly to LET CHAOS PREVAIL. It´s been 5 years since Demigod´s 2nd album, SHADOW MECHANICS, so obviously many of us have a good enough reason to sincerely believe Demigod had called its quits, but luckily those suspicious doubts don´t hold any water.

Since the days of SHADOW MECHANICS, lots of murky water has been flowing under the bridge, and many things have been happened in the Demigod -camp, too. Line-up changes aren´t the only changes Demigod has gone through over these past years, but the band has also traveled a long way from those Death Metal paths they used to have in the past, especially on their highly acclaimed debut album, SLUMBER OF SULLEN EYES. Nonetheless, Demigod´s new album LET CHAOS PREVAIL introduces the band in a new light that can hardly be considered any worse compared to their past, glorious old days. The musical steps they have taken on LET CHAOS PREVAIL, are somewhat drastic, but not for any worse direction if that was one of our biggest fears.

LET CHAOS PREVAIL has now been released – and the members of Demigod are eager to reveal more about it as well as some of their other plans regarding the coming months. Now let´s enter Demigod…

Thunderstone – Nino Laurenne

August 19th, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

Interview and live pics by Arto Lehtinen

Thunderstone have carved its mark on the Finnish metal map with strong albums and tight gigs. The band’s latest effort EVOLUTION 4.0 is strong evidence of the band’s ability to create melodic but tightly played metal. The five piece spent the whole spring in the limelight as they were semifinalists in the Eurovision song contents here in Finland. So, it was about time to get a hold of the band’s mastermind Nino Laurenne to discuss the latest album and of course other interesting topics such as working with the Finnish idol winner, a new guitar album project and recalling the time when he used to play in Antidote and toured with Accuser and HeadHunter all around in Europe.

Znowhite

Znowhite

There are quite literally thousands of bands out there toiling every day, fighting for their survival in the vast jungle we call the music business armed only with determination and armored only with blood, sweat, and beers, every one of them hoping for that one big break that will enable them to make a name for themselves and join the ranks of the elite groups we mention today with reverance.  Most never make it.  A very, very few rise to prominence and somehow remain there while never selling themselves out – usually because of a unique combination of exceptional talent and good luck.  Some “succeed” by selling their integrity to the rapacious, soulless machine that is the music industry of today, where style and hype dominates substance and skill.  Some become “one hit wonders,” the “next big thing” one day and fading away into obscurity the next…often times continuing on as shadows of their former selves, living on the remnants and memories of glory days gone by.  And some seem to just be on the edge of grabbing the brass ring but for one reason or another coming up short, yet they continue to soldier on in one way or another, adapting to survive as necessary.  This is a story of one of the latter bands, the decidedly non-fairy tale of a group called Znowhite.

Torture Squad – Castor from the Brazilian deathrash band

August 14th, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

Interview by Arto Lehtinen

Live pics by Vera Diniz

As always I usually tend to praise the Brazilian extreme metal bands in every article published in Metal-Rules.Com.  Brazilian bands are simply great and present the rawness and brutality of what is expected from these kinds of black/death/thrash metal bands. Torture Squad have belonged to my personal fave list for a long time after getting a hold of ASYLUM OF SHADOWS and THE UNHOLY SPELL. The four piece torturers recently took a part of Wacken’s Metal Battle and of course dominated and kicked and won the whole competition. It would be about time for Torture Squad to spread their unholy brutal deathrash more and more in Europe. The band’s bassist Castor tells more about the next album and tours.

Tuska Open Air 2007 – Helsinki, Finland

August 13th, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

Tuska Open Air Metal Festival

The 29th of June ? The 1st of July 2007

The Central Park of Kaisaniemi

Helsinki Finland

Review and pics by Luxi Lahtinen and Arto Lehtinen

(additional comments by Mika Hankaniemi)

Once again the prestigious Tuska open air metal festival is here. Thousands of metalheads have travelled from all around Finland and other countries to the central park of Kaisaniemi in order to celebrate the real metal inferno in the middle of Helsinki. This year the Tuska metal festival celebrates its tenth anniversary and of course the offering of the line-up of bands is as colorful as in the previous events.

Getting the mighty Norwegian black metal legends like Emperor and Immortal have been the most awaited ones amongst the audience for sure. However although these so-called big black metal legends definitely attract more of the extreme metal fans, the festival is not limited to one certain metal category. Everyone has something to feel and see and taste during these three days. Above all, power metal had a strong line up – for example Blind Guardian and Stratovarius, being the most known names in Tuska?s bill in 2007.

The festival has become a real guaranteed pure metal festival and has had massive popularity amongst all kinds of metalheads of all ages. The majority of the tickets were already sold out quickly in the advance sales a long time ago. However there were some leftovers if someone was willing to buy, and taste a feeling of metal after all.

Metal-Rules.com was again at Tuska to give an exact review and article on bands. Therefore sit down and enjoy your reading.

Review and pics by Robert Williams

The NAMM show is an industry only conference for music retailers, one of the biggest music related conventions in the world, 2nd only to the Frankfurt Musikmesse, so I’m told. Music retailers come from all around the world to make connections and network with their peers, showcase their new products, and attend NAMM classes that teach industry secrets on how to improve business for music retailers.

Rockhimlen Rock & Metal Festival in Helsingborg Sweden 2007

Rockhimlen Rock Metal Festival

After coming home from the muddy banks of the Roskilde Festival it was time to head to Helsingborg, a town situated a few miles north of Malmoe, Sweden to enjoy the newly started Rockhimlen Festival. During the festival’s 2 days 23 acts performed. That was about 12 acts per day and the festivals main focus was set to lift up glam/sleaze acts in the light. The bands were mostly local but there were also a few more well known acts from other parts of Sweden as well as from Great Britain.
