One of the greatest voices in metal, Michael Kiske, is finally back in business. Best known as a former Helloween singer from the band’s golden era, the KEEPER OF THE KEYS, is now returning with his brand new band UNISONIC. Although it’s been seventeen years since Michael last performed onstage his name is still well known in today’s metal/rock world. Even though he has not performed Kiske has kept himself busy over the last 17 years. He has released four solo albums and been involved with several different projects including: Tobias Sammat’s Avantasia –albums, Revolution Reneissance with Timo Tolkki, Supared and recently he’s been working with the Place Vendome –project which in a way was in a key role for Michael’s decision to return. The Place Vendome line up also include current Unisonic members: bassist Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69) and drummer Kosta Zafiriou (Pink Cream 69). The Unisonic line-up is completed with former Krokus and Asia guitarist Mandy Mayer. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Michael at the Swedenrock festival and here is what Michael had to say about his current activities, solo career, Helloween days, Iron Maiden and various other topics…. ENJOY !!

The first of four portions of the new artwork for the as-yet-untitled DIMMU BORGIR album has been uploaded to the band’s MySpace page.
Joachim Luetke (Arch Enemy, Kreator, Sopor Aeternus), German artist / painter / graphic designer who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, lends his disturbing talents to the new DIMMU BORGIR album.
When asked what he feels his approach does for DIMMU BORGIR, Luetke responds: “My artwork visualizes their music, adds another (optical) dimension to it. I don’t know exactly how this works. Cannot tell what kind of interior mechanism gets triggered by their music, but it’s clearly an utmost powerful one. Analyzing this means destroying it. As for our repeated collaborations, well, that’s probably because we share the similar philosophy at eye level.”
In early June, DIMMU BORGIR proudly announced their collaboration with Norwegian composer and Berklee College of Music summa cum laude alumnus Gaute Storaas in addition to the 51 members of KORK (the Norwegian Radio Orchestra) and the 38-member Schola Cantorum Choir for their new release. To date, over 101 musicians have contributed to the making of the new album.
Composer Gaute Storaas has said of DIMMU BORGIR: “Their music is epic, thematic and symphonic already from the creation; they are clearly having an orchestral approach to composing.”
DIMMU BORGIR’s ninth studio album will be released in Germany on September 24th, in the rest of Europe on September 27th, and in North America on October 12th.
WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks
SplitScreen Entertainment has revealed the cover art of its upcoming tribute album “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks.” The image can be viewed at the official “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE”MySpace page or at the SplitScreen Entertainment website. Inspired by the art of 19th century painter William Rimmer, the album cover is based on his most famous work, Evening (The Fall of Day). In place of the winged male in the original is a classically Rubenesque female figure, gracefully floating over a tranquil seascape. The new rendition was created by eminent pop artist Les Toil, known for his bold and beautiful “big girl” pin-up art (as well as concert posters for the likes of Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette, and cover art for albums featuring NOFX, Green Day and Blink-182). In addition to serving as the cover of the tribute, the new artwork is also being offered on posters and T-shirts available from SplitScreen Entertainment.
“To complement such a unique project as this, the cover art needed to be absolutely perfect,” reasons SplitScreen Entertainment founder A.J. Confessore. “I wanted to reference an iconic and evocative image, replacing the central figure with a larger woman in a classy and tasteful manner. After months of trying to come up with just the right idea, it finally hit me like a bolt out of the blue! This vision was ultimately given form by the endlessly gifted Les Toil, who rendered our angelic ingenue with due serenity and poise (while also striking that delicate balance between parody and homage). In the end, I hope this image will resonate with fans in the rock and plus-size communities alike.”
“Passive and subtle were never qualities that attracted me to rock & roll,” adds artist Les Toil. “Apparently the same can be said for my appreciation of the opposite sex. I want a fat bottomed girl. A whole lotta Rosie. A big-legged woman who does (or doesn’t) have soul. In other words, I want a whole lotta love!”

NEW BOOK – DAWN OF THE METAL GODS: MY LIFE IN JUDAS PRIEST & HEAVY METAL by AL ATKINS (and NEIL DANIELS) FOREWORD BY IAN HILL
Al Atkins is the former lead singer and founder of the multi-million selling British
heavy metal band Judas Priest. Atkins will forever be associated with the self-
proclaimed Metal Gods. But how did it all happen?
During the 1960s when the popular Brum Beat era produced band after band
(such as The Move and The Band Of Joy,) Atkins played in various local outfits some
of which laid the blue print for the heavier progressive sounds of early Judas Priest.
And so it was in 1969 that a disillusioned Atkins decided to have a go at forming yet
another band with his childhood friend Bruno Stapenhill. The band in question was
Judas Priest quickly built up a reputation in the Midlands as a powerful live act and
even secured a record deal with Immediate, which was owned by ex-Rolling Stones
manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Unfortunately Immediate folded and so did Priest.
Undeterred, Atkins formed yet another line-up of Priest in 1970 with guitarist K.K.
Downing and bassist Ian Hill. At Atkins’ behest Downing and Hill ditched the name
Freight and resurrected the mighty Judas Priest. Through the early seventies Priest
supported many bands including Slade, Status Quo, Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath.
Line-up changes continued until May, 1973 when Atkins finally decided to call it a
Atkins is the co-writer of several Priest songs which are included on the band’s first two albums Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings Of Destiny both of which eventually went Gold. Atkins co-penned the heavy metal classic ‘Victim Of Changes’ which was a combination of Rob Halford’s song ‘Red Light Lady’ and Atkins’ own ‘Whisky Woman.’ He also co-wrote the fan classics ‘Winter,’ ‘Never Satisfied,’ ‘Dreamer Deceiver’ and ‘Caviar And Meths.’ His autobiography contains very rare archive photos and memorabilia from Judas Priest’s past circa 1969-1973.
Also included are interviews with various members of Priest’s history and Atkins’
solo career. Dawn Of The Metal Gods includes a foreword by Judas Priest bassist IAN HILL as well as contributions from:
Bruno Stapenhill (Judas Priest Mark I)
Ernie Chataway (Judas Priest Mark I)
John Ellis (Judas Priest Mark II)
Trevor Lunn (ex-Judas Priest roadie)
David Howells (Gull Records)
Dave Corke (ex-Judas Priest manager 1970-‘76)
Norman Hood (IMA Agency)
Atkins’ debut solo album Judgement Day was released to great acclaim in 1989. But
it was Heavy Thoughts and Victim Of Changes (the latter being his collaborative
album with ex-Judas Priest drummer Dave Holland) that brought him strong sales and
critical acclaim around the world. Recently, Atkins has released his fifth solo opus
Demon Deceiver and formed the Midlands heavy metal band The Holy Rage. They’ve
shared the bill with ex-Rainbow singer Graham Bonnet, the NYC band Warrior Soul
and legendary rockers Skid Row.
In Dawn Of The Metal Gods Atkins share’s his entertaining life story with the
reader. This is not just a book for Priest fans but a bible for anybody wishing to form
a band in the tumultuous world of heavy metal.
Written in a style that represents Al’s working class Birmingham roots, Dawn
Of The Metal Gods will set the story straight on the roots of the world’s most revered
and dedicated heavy metal band. Celebrating 40 years of (Judas Priest style) heavy
