Monstrosity – Vocalist Brian Werner
Interviewed by Robert
As one of the longest running forerunner’s for the Florida Death Metal throne, Monstrosity has been a force to reckon with since 1990. From the classic IMPERIAL DOOM to the most recent output, a split cd also featuring death metal giants Incantation as well as Rottrevore and Repulsion for Relapse Records, Monstrosity has maintained a loyal worldwide fanbase, toured the globe almost constantly and endured their share of line up changes. Having seen the band in concert over five times during various stages of their career, I was as anxious as any to hear what the band had been up to these last few years.
Upon attending the NAMM Summer Session conference (a music industry trade show that just so happened to take place in my hometown of Austin, Texas) I had the chance to meet many interesting musicians. A good number of them were death metal related. There was Derek Roddy of Hate Eternal fame, David Vincent of Morbid Angel, and Tim Yeung from Vital Remains hosting the World’s Fastest Drummer competition. Taking a break to step outside and quench my desire for an afternoon smoke, I happened upon one Brian Werner who it just so happens is Monstrosity’s new lead singer….in addition to fronting the underground death/black metal outfit Infernaeon.
I got a chance to speak at length with Brian about all things Monstrosity / Infernaeon related. Here is what he had to say…
11.06 2006 House of Culture
Ted Nugent’s long career as a musician started in the late sixties with Amboy Dukes but the big success did not find him before he started his solo career in the mid 70’s. Since then Ted Nugent has done several world tours and sold millions of records but before today, he’s never been in Finland. Although it’s true that in the past few years Ted Nugent has been in the headlines more for his statements and hunting interest than musical deeds. Despite that and the fact that Ted has never been a real big name in Finland and he has never sold too many records either it was more than delightful to discover that House of Culture was completely sold out tonight.

Amorphis – Keyboardist Santeri Kallio
Interviewed by EvilG
Questions by EvilG & Arto Lehtinen
Transcription by Duke / Live Amorphis Pics by Arto Lehtinen
Amorphis line-up 2006:
Tomi Joutsen – vocals
Esa Holopainen – guitar
Niclas Etelävuori – bass
Santeri Kallio – keyboards
Jan Rechberger – drums
Amorphis has recently been rejuvenated with the addition of new vocalist Tomi Joutsen and their latest album ECLIPSE is their best offering since ELEGY (1996). The dueling clean/death styled vocals are back as are more driving songs. Everything that was wrong about their previous lackluster release (2003′s FAR FROM THE SUN) is easily wiped away by the vitality of ECLIPSE. Recently, I was given the opportunity to interview Amorphis keyboardist Santeri Kallio and we spoke about his background, his time with Amorphis before becoming an actual member, Finnish music, and about the new Amorphis album.
Sauna Open Air Metal Festival, Tampere, Finland, 8th-10th of June 2006
Intro/outro by Luxi “come-out-and-play” Lahtinen
Mindless commentary, bullshitting, spitting, farting, headaches, mumbling, cursing, getting wasted, demons on shoulders, handclapping, sophisticated way of using swear words, photographing, killing of the giants / slaughtering of the gayest, documenting of all kinds, etc. by Luxi “L.O.V.E. Machine” Lahtinen & Niko “burn-in-Hell” Karppinen
“Satan´s calling… Ave Luciferus… Ave Satanas! Heavy Metal is dangerous for your health. It reaps your soul and destroys your mind”.
If that´s so, we had arrived to the right place. Sauna Open Air Metal Festival opened its doors for the third time in its entire history, this time having booked some very interesting yet big names for the bill – Iggy & The Stooges, Lordi and Twisted Sister being probably those three bands that made most of the people travel to the festival, yet not underestimating all the other bands (like W.A.S.P., Finntroll, Stam1na – and so on…) that participated in this metallic event in one of the Finland´s biggests cities, Tampere.
This year´s bill was basically shared for three musical categories: Thursday was for a more rock-orientated bands (Blake, The Black League, Iggy & The Stooges, etc.), Friday for more extreme sounding bands (Finntroll, Diablo, Cradle of Filth, etc.) and Saturday, which was also sold-out due to bands like Lordi and Twisted Sister, we were treated to bands that have based their sounds on more of a tradiotional Heavy Metal sound, so basically everyone found some bands for his/her likings.
Also two (well-) aged (but not bald), dumb (but not stupid) and close-minded (but not THAT narrow-minded) reporters from the largely respected Canadian Metal-Rules.com webmagazine intruded through the gates of the festival just like last year, and the following diary was put together by them (Read the last year´s S.O.A.M. -festival diary from here), out of the (well-selected) bands at the Sauna Open Air Metal Festival 2006. Read on…

There’s no doubt that Carmine Appice is a living drum legend. His career started already on the mid 60′s with Vanilla Fudge and since then he’s been working with such names as Ozzy Osbourne, Ted Nugent, Rod Stewart, Blue Murder, King Kobra among many others. Metal-Rules.com caught Carmine at Sweden Rock festival just a few hours before he was going to hit on the stage with another classic band of his, Cactus. As a result of our length discussion here’s an update of Carmine’s current projects, past bands and future plans. Enjoy!!!

The legendary Metal Church had been booked to the almighty Swedenrock festival 2006 for the first time ever. Of course it was more than obvious the man behind Metal Church Kurdt Vanderhoof needed to be interviewed for Metal-Rules.Com. The Seattle five piece has struggled thru the years since the early 80′s and now returned back to the limelight with a renewed line-up and a new album “THE LIGHT IN THE DARK”

07.07 2006 Hartwall Arena
It’s been about fifteen years since the last time Guns ’n Roses played Finland. Back in the day they were one of the biggest bands in the world and they played two sold out shows at the Ice Hall in Helsinki. Lots of things have changed from those days. Singer Axl Rose is the only member left from the original line up. Over the past few years the band has cancelled more tours than they have actually played and there have been constant changes in the band’s line up. A new Guns ’n Roses album has been in the works for over a decade already and still no one knows for sure if that album is ever coming out? In spite of all this, it’s amazing that the band seems to be more popular than ever. Many things may have changed but they still sold out two Hartwall Arena shows within few minutes…

Dawn Of Azazel hailing from New Zealand got catapulted to the worldwide stage when the local tabloids and CNN became interested in the band’s lyrics. Despite these media interests this Kiwi trio has gained a reputation as an extreme and brutal death metal squad with two killer outputs called THE LAW OF THE STRONG and SEDITION. The combo recently returned from a US tour with Incantation and Vital Remains, and the band’s frontman Rigel Walshe tells a litte bit about the the SEDITION album and the hassles with the media..

Karl Sanders – The guitarist & vocalist of Nile
Interview and live/off-stage pictures by Luxi Lahtinen
The US catacomb warriors Nile hit on the Finnish soil on May 1st 2006 for the very 1st time, having touring mates Yyrkoon from France and Australian Psycroptic along with them. This was Nile´s 2nd leg of the European tour, a continuation for their successful “Annihilation of the Wicked” world tour which started last year.
Since the band was in Finland for the very 1st time, I felt an urgent need to find out why they had so well managed to avoid coming to Finland before – amongst other things, like a common brotherhood of metal fans, the troubles the band faced in Estonia, voodoo witchery and so on.
It was the vocalist and guitarist of Nile, Karl Sanders who I found taking pictures outside of the venue with his digicamera, about 3 hours before their gig. While he was taking some pictures from one of the harbours of Helsinki, I decided to join him, and the recorder was put rolling after his permission…
Atheist - Vocalist Kelly Shaefer
Interviewed by Luxi Lahtinen
When talking about a highly technical and innovative Death Metal, Atheist, – along with Death and Cynic, are one of those bands that broke a bunch of musical boundaries on their way towards the success they gained during the late eighties, and the first half of the ´90s. The band´s catalogue consisted of only three albums, but they all were very unique yet groundbreaking in their own way. They set certain standards for the concept of ´technical Death Metal´. There is no wonder why many consider Atheist´s second album, UNQUESTIONABLE PRESENCE, as one of the finest Death Metal releases of all time It certainly was that very album where Atheist´s sound was sharply culminated, being a real masterpiece of very ambitiously played, highly dynamic technical Death Metal, with its occasional and cleverly done jazz-tinged parts.
Atheist regrouped in the beginning of 2006 in order to do an exclusive run of both festival and club appearances in Europe this summer. Many people who never got to see Atheist playing live, now have a chance to see them one last time even if a couple of original Atheist members cannot participate on the tour for some obvious reasons (2006 also means 15th Anniversary of Roger’s death), but you can read all about them (and more) from the interview that I recently conducted with the frontman Kelly Shaefer of this mighty Floridian tech-Death Metal group.

Obituary, the long time death metal squad from Florida, have carved the unforgettable marks to the metal scene by unleashing nothing but killer death metal albums. This legendary five piece was a headliner of the third stage of the Swedenrock Festival and frankly the heaviest and the best act of all of the other ones for sure. I managed to have a short chat with the Obituary guitarist, Trevor Peres, before the Floridian death metal outfit hit the stage. The interview situation was rather bizarre as doing the interview on the backstage when some other band was terrorizing on the stage was quite weird. But however here is something to offer and enjoy….
VoiVod – Vocalist, Snake (Denis Belanger)

Interview Questions by EvilG and Arto

It must be hard for VoiVod to talk about the painful topic of Piggy’s death and to continue the band without him (Denis “Piggy” D’Amour passed away on August 26, 2005 due to cancer). Despite Piggy’s physical absence, he is still quite present since his guitar tracks for the forthcoming VoiVod album KATORZ were already prepared in advance. In this interview with VoiVod vocalist Snake, we talk about the new album, playing live, DVD plans, and much more. Enjoy!
Interview with Ron Tijssen
Interview By AsassinKiller
Callenish Circle is certainly a band that since the incredible Flesh_Power_Dominion gained a lot of attention from press and fans alike. These Dutch men carry high their countries flag by making top-notch Melodic Death Metal that crushes mediocrity within the genre.
Their latest opus is [Pitch.Black.Effects] and it showcases a new sound for the band. Electronics have started to play a bigger role in the compositions, but fortunately the band has not forgotten the CC sound that they developed throughout the years. I contacted Ron Tijssen and this is what he had to say on the new album, the current state of the band, Chuck “God” Schuldiner, and a Black Panther. Enjoy.
