Dream Theater – Mike Portnoy

Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater
and Liquid Tension Experiment

Intervied  Jan. 1999 by David Lee.

The term “Supergroup” is one that has its origin in the seventies when groups like EMERSON, LAKE and PALMER and BLIND FAITH ruled both the airwaves and concert stages. Since that time the concept and term have been used endlessly with less and less justification to do so. Finally, with the release of LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT, the progressive rock world has put together a group which is justifiably and demonstrably a “Supergroup.”

Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci of DREAM THEATER, Jordan Rudess of THE DREGS and Tony Levin who has played with everyone from PETER GABRIEL to YES came together for five days to hammer out an extemporaneous recording that only professionals of their ability and experience could have even attempted. The record has been called a “stroke-fest” by some but if what is contained in these 70 minutes is pure pomp the circumstance for it are perfect. Every number on the disc is pure adrenaline just this side of extreme. There are no singers and no ballads, just straight ahead virtuosity and passion. It is just what the music scene needs right now.

I spoke with LTE’s motivating force, Mike Portnoy about this project and about the state of progressive rock in general.

Krokus – Alive and Well

Krokus ? Alive & Well

Interview with Vocalist Marc Storace

Interview by Keith MacDonald

Krokus was one of the few, if not only, Swiss hard rock band to have commercial success in the US. In 1995 the ride came to an abrupt end when the band elected to go their separate ways only to reunite in 2002. They released a new album of hard rock material and hit the road throughout Europe reacquainting themselves with their fans from the past and picking up some new ones along the way. I recently had an opportunity to speak with singer Marc Storace who gave me some insight on the band and their upcoming US tour. You can check out their website awww.krokusonline.com.

STRATOVARIUS – Jens Johansson

Stratovarius Keyboardist Jens Johansson
Interview By EvilG / Transcription by Duke
Live Pics Metal-Rules.com, Promo Pics from SanctuaryRecords

After a turbulent year, Stratovarius has emerged from the soap opera that was the band with a new self-titled album and a new approach. The music is still easily identifiable as Stratovarius, but the trademark speed is completely absent from the new album as is the presence of most (not all) shredding guitars and most of the blazing keyboard solos that the pair are known for. Despite the changes, and the missing ingredients, the songs are catchy and quite good. I questioned Jens on the new direction, the past year?s events, and among other things touched upon the infamous ?release the fury? Yngwie recording for which he was present as a member of Yngwie?s Rising Force band.

Alex Skolnick

by EvilG

Alex Skolnick
Interviewed on January 27, 1998 by EvilG

As most already know Alex was lead guitarist for Testament from 1987′s ‘The Legacy’ until 1992′s ‘The Ritual.’ During this period Alex was an inspiration to many a guitar player. His technical ability was without question amazing. Reports said that Alex had tired of Testament’s musical direction. According to the band, when Alex left they felt as if a weight had been taken off of their shoulders for now they could pursue much heavier music.

Following Alex’s departure he joined Savatage and appeared on their CD “Handful of Rain” and a live EP. Concurrently he was part of a jazz/rock project with bass soloist Stuart Hamm. This takes us up until the mid-nineties.

So where has Alex been? Fortunately I was given the opportunity to get an update from Alex himself on his years with Testament and his new project Skol-Patrol…here it is, enjoy.

KURDT VANDERHOOF OF METAL CHURCH
Interviewed on Saturday, August 8, 1998 By EvilG

For those not with it, or perhaps born on a distant planet in a galaxy far, far away, Metal Church have been and thankfully still are one of the great purveyors of “true” heavy metal. We’re not talking punk, hardcore, noise, techno-industrial shit here…this is the real deal. Metal Church have always stood for METAL. Hell, their name says it all.

The interview was done with guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof. There’s a lot of cool stuff below so I hope you read on. If you have any comments on the interview let me know.

Oscar Dronjak of HammerFall
Interviewed on Oct. 2, 1998 by EvilG

Hammerfall has become one of my favorite bands over the past year, so the opportunity for a Q-n-A session with guitarist Oscar Dronjak was in a word -  AWESOME! Also, I have nothing but respect for a band that is 100% heavy metal and who are proud of it! Hopefully you’ve heard something from Hammerfall by now, if not then it’s time to do so. Here is the interview, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed doing it!!

Paul Mazurkiewicz of Cannibal Corpse

August 21st, 2005
by EvilG

Paul Mazurkiewicz of Cannibal Corpse
Added on December 13, 1998
by Davil L. of Music America

A naked woman disemboweling herself, several hangings and various other self inflicted tortures are depicted on the cover of the new CANNIBAL CORPSE CD. Just another page in a macabre book of morbid tales from Florida’s death metal kings? Well, yes. Not much has changed for these guys other than members in their ten year history. They still produce the most intensely violent and visual music known to man.

Paul Mazurkiewicz has been behind the drum kit since the beginning of this grimly grandiose group and spun me tales of the sick and twisted for about a half hour recently. Read on if you dare!

Iced Earth – Jon Schaffer

Iced Earth – Interview With Jon Schaffer
Interviewed on Dec. 5, 1998 by EvilG

Iced Earth, a band that has been around for nearly 10 years yet still hasn’t made a noticeable impact in the USA. Why have they been the underdogs? I’ll tell you why, they have never sold out nor changed their sound to accommodate the flavor of the week. This is no bubble gum band and Jon makes no bones about it, Iced Earth are a heavy metal band.

Hopefully by now some of you have heard of Heathendoom Music, a great indie label from Sweden. Bands such as Memory Garden, Fifth Reason, and T.A.R. all call this label home. Per Karlsson who is the drummer for T.A.R. and a Heathendoom Records representative recently took the time to discuss, at length, his label and band.
