Appropriately enough, it was clear and slightly snowy the evening of Paganfest, and with a 5pm start, there was ample time for all five bands to show their quality. It was a night for singing, dancing and some rocking heavy metal! As far as I was concerned, this was a perfect night: firstly, the lights were amazing, meaning I captured some great shots and secondly, the bouncers let us stay the entire show in the photo pit. The downside is that I rarely took any notes, so the report will be slightly short on words. But big on pictures. Lots and lots of pictures. Enjoy, as I did.

IRON MAIDEN – Somewhere Back In Time: The Powerslave Interviews

IRON MAIDEN - Somewhere Back In Time: The Powerslave Interviews

Somewhere Back In Time: The Powerslave Interviews

By Gueneviere

The following are a series of interviews done with all the members of Iron Maiden just prior to the U.S. release of the watershed 5th album, Powerslave, circa Autumn of 1984. At the time, the band was also in the midst of touring Europe in support of the same album. (The tour had already taken them “Behind the Iron Curtain” into Poland, a first for a western heavy rock band at the time, and an event which also resulted in a public relations coup and a documentary later shown on MTV, etc.)

Kamelot / Firewind / Forever Slave – Islington Academy, London

KAMELOT

All live pics and review by HannTu

One of the front-runners of US Power Metal, Kamelot kicked off their second European tour in support of THE GHOST OPERA here in London. Billed as the Rule The World Tour 2008, this time they bring along guitar virtuoso Gus G and his band Firewind, who are perennial favourites here in London, and are always guaranteed a good reception. Opening for them are Forever Slave, a Spanish goth metal band, who stepped in to replace Visions of Atlantis at the last minute. Incidentally, the last time Kamelot were in London, Sean Tibbetts, standing in for regular bassist Glenn Barry, dislocated his knee. It gives a new meaning to the theatrical community’s phrase “Break a leg!”, so I’ll go for a simple “Good luck” tonight. And so, ladies and gentlemen and people at the front, welcome all to curtain call!

South By Southwest (SXSW) 2008

April 8th, 2008
by EvilG

SXSW

By Robert Williams

South By Southwest (SXSW) is an annual music and film conference/festival held yearly in beautiful Austin, Texas. In the 21 years of its existence, SXSW has served as a launching pad for many unknown bands turned media darlings overnight. For one week in the month of March each year bands from all over the world gather in downtown Austin and showcase their music, their craft, for record executives, media big wigs, and most importantly in my opinion, music lovers!

This all sounds like a splendid and festive occasion with the exception of one detail. SXSW has almost exclusively all but overlooked metal and its many subgenres for its entire existence.

Now I won’t lie. In years past I have seen some cool showcases. Century Media and Relapse usually cart their bands into town, and scattered about my 12 year tenure in Austin I have seen some notable showcases featuring among others In Extremo, Sol Evil, Children Of Bodom, and Grey Skies Fallen. But when 1,400 bands come to town for one week in March each year, you would hope at least, I don’t know, 50-100 of them would be awesome heavy metal, right?

Well, this year Austin got a fair amount of killer metal. Kicking things off on Wednesday, the 12th I had the pleasure of witnessing my first Municipal Waste concert. A day later I got off of work early and headed downtown with some friends and caught a showcase featuring Enslaved, Mixhell, Napalm Death, High On Fire, and the mighty Motorhead.

Lastly, I witnessed the “It’s Grim Up North” showcase featuring Sabaton, 1349 and Enslaved. I partied like a true champion, saw some really, really good performances and got some really solid interviews. Read on metal faithful and I shall guide you through these conversations in steel conducted in my homeland of Austin….Let’s start at the beginning….

Down – Live in Helsinki, Finland

April 6th, 2008

DOWN : The House of Culture

The 21st of March 2007

Helsinki Finland

Down’s second visit to Finland has been a long time coming since their triumphant debut club gig that happened a few years ago in Tampere. That gig was sold quickly leaving several people outside the club without tickets. That gig has been described as one hell of the most memorable, remarkable, and intense club gigs witnessed for years. Therefore, having two gigs on the current touring schedule was more than obvious to meet the demand of the Down fans.

KISS – Live at F1 Grand Prix, Melbourne AUSTRALIA

KISS

Live at F1 Grand Prix, Melbourne

16.03 2008

AUSTRALIA

A large proportion of about 100 000 F1 Grand Prix fans stayed to the see American rock legends in full costumes in action. It was hard to pinpoint exact numbers but it was later announced that more than 10 000 people upgraded their standard F1 tickets for “KISS pole position” passes which gave closer access to the stage. The Melbourne show was the first stop on the bands 35th anniversary ALIVE 35 -world tour and it was definitely a good place to start. Australians have always been big KISS fans and the band still has a huge following there.  What also made this show very special is the fact that this was the bands first outdoor concert in Australia since their very first tour there in 1980.

Review by HannTu

It’s a pretty weird pairing – the immensely popular, symphonic goth rockers Nightwish on the same tour with oddball industrial techno metal band Pain. The man behind Pain is of course the multi-talented Peter Tagtgren; founder of Swedish melodic death band Hypocrisy, former vocalist of Bloodbath, one time drummer for Malevolent Creation, studio owner and producer extraordinaire, and a whole slew of other side projects. I was pretty damn excited to interview him, but I wasn’t going to attend the show originally, until a last minute photo pass turned up.

The commercial appeal of Nightwish is impossible to overstate. Three consecutive nights in London is extremely rare – Iron Maiden play two nights regularly, but the Unholy Alliance 2006 (Slayer, In Flames, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God) and this year’s Black Crusade Tour (Machine Head, Dragonforce, Arch Enemy) are the only two that I can think of offhand. Trivium and Annihilator might have done three London nights last year. Some people I spoke to turned up to all three nights, which is pretty impressive. The signing session in Zavvi (formerly Virgin Megastores) earlier in the day was packed with people eager to get stuff signed and close-up shots of the band. One girl even brought her guitar to be signed!

Jeff Waters of ANNIHILATOR

Interview by Shaq

Back in December I had the opportunity to spend some time talking to metal legend Jeff Waters about everything from the good ol’ days to today, from spandex to the age of the internet and everything in between.  After years of no recognition in his home continent, Annihilator’s latest record, simply titled METAL, is being given a legitimate North American release.

NightInGale

Nosturi Helsinki

The 21st of March 2008

Having a metal gig before the easter break with two Swedish metal names, NightInGale and Evergrey, appeared to be both interesting and temptating because of the line-up. Both bands definitely enjoy a more true fan based following in Finland. Above all, NightInGale definitely draws some expected interest from the progessive genre, but of course Evergrey has the fan-legion of their own.

Avantasia – Tobias Sammet

March 27th, 2008
by EvilG

avantasia

Written by Simon Lukic

Transcribed by Mike ‘fucking hostile’ Holmes

Tobias Sammet is currently one of Metal’s most engaging personalities. His work with Edguy has taken him to all corners of the world and has proven to be highly successful. However in 2001 Tobias surprised the Metal community with a project called Avantasia and the release of THE METAL OPERA PART 1 was a massive gift to fans. The album bought together a host of Power Metal’s greatest stars, the highlight being that Tobias was able to entice vocalist Michael Kiske back from a self imposed Metal exile. THE METAL OPERA PART 2 followed in 2002 and now we have the latest installment, THE SCARECROW. A different album in many ways THE SCARECROW shows another side of Tobias with many tracks leaning towards a Rock format, more so than ever before. It’s a great album nevertheless made even better with guest appearances from Eric Singer on drums and Alice Cooper on vocals. Michael makes a return as do a number of artist from the first two albums, so do check it out if you haven’t already. I had the opportunity to chat to Tobias and as always he was amicable and ready to talk.
