BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR solidified its position as the UK’s only true outdoor Metal Festival, enjoying its most successful year so far. As well as celebrating its 10th anniversary, BLOODSTOCK reached yet another milestone achieving its first five figure turn out. Over 10,300 metalheads descended upon Catton Hall in Derbyshire to see nearly 80 acts, including headliners OPETH, CHILDREN OF BODOM, FEAR FACTORY and TWISTED SISTER, as well as a plethora of other top names in the world of metal.
Highlights included a one minute tribute to the legendary RONNIE JAMES DIO – 60 seconds of cheering and horn raising – to christen the main stage, and a very rare performance from Swedish tech-metal heroes MESHUGGAH on Friday, a highly memorable set from DEVIN TOWNSEND on Saturday, who after contending with having his band’s equipment held up in customs, turned the disaster around to put on an extremely entertaining show, pulling in one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. Sunday saw the first ever UK performance of death metal supergroup BLOODBATH, who took the stage covered in bruises, cuts and an assortment of other injuries, as well as GOJIRA’s only UK show of 2010.
After BLOODBATH’s set, GWAR frontman ODERUS URUNGUS took the stage to draw the winner for BLOODSTOCK’s exclusive car raffle. The holder of ticket number 12281 is yet to claim their prize of a brand new Toyota Aygo, and must claim their prize within the next seven days. If you purchased your ticket from HMV in Canterbury, check your ticket stub, as you may well be the proud owner of a brand new car! But the real surprise treat came following death metal legend’s CANNIBAL CORPSE’s punishingly heavy set, when BLOODSTOCK revealed the first headliner for 2011. The news of IMMORTAL’s only UK show of 2011 via a two-minute trailer on the main stage video screen was welcomed with huge cheers from the BLOODSTOCK crowd, leaving no doubt that the Norwegian Black Metallers’s first ever UK festival performance will be a highly anticipated one.
Closed by a monumental set from TWISTED SISTER, who ploughed their way through classics such as “You Can’t Stop Rock’n’Roll”, “I Am (I’m Me)”, “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock”, the atmosphere at Catton Hall right was electric, with all present enjoying not only BLOODSTOCK’s most successful year yet, but also the excitement of the first announcement for 2011, tickets for which are on sale now for the roll back price of £90 – fixed until December 2010 to beat the VAT increase.

With three acclaimed albums and a live album etc. behind them, Danish Black Metallers HORNED ALMIGHTY have now finished their new studio album entitled “NECRO SPIRITUALS”. Recorded in May-June 2010. Mixed and Mastered by Jacob Bredahl (Hatesphere, Koldborn etc) at Dead Rat Studios.
An album comprised of the strongest and most fierce material written in the bands 8 year existence. Yet again, crushing all doctrines and rules with their “Don’t give a shit” take on black metal, as a testament to all that is extreme.
Originally formed in early 2002 by S. and Hellpig, both active in the extreme metal underground since the early nineties, the filthy ugly beast that is Horned Almighty was puked from the gutters of Hell initially as a duo. First intended as a side project, Horned Almighty quickly became first priority and shortly after the first primitive demo had been recorded, the drum-throne was seized by Harm. Rehearsing began for yet another demo, which in late 2003 ended up in the recording of four hellish songs in the bands own recording studio,”Vomit”, a true shithole.
Before releasing the demo, some labels were approached with the material and Infernus Rex from the Netherlands released the material as a 7” ep, called “In the year of our horned lord” April 2004. At the same time, the bastard cult of Horned Almighty had their first live performance, featuring a session bass player, and sharing the stage with prominent names such as Dismember and Carpathian Forest.
In the summer of 2004 four filthy new songs were puked onto tape and released as the split Lp ”To The Lord Our Lives” by Hearse Recs. Moribund Records from the US did the cd version shortly thereafter.
At the same time rehearsing began for what was to become the first full length album and the ”Black Metal Jesus” album was recorded in the autumn 2004, once again in ”Vomit”. Infernus Rex released the album in November 2004 and the underground seemed to embrace Horned Almighty’s, at the time, quite different take on the Black Metal phenomenon. A video for the song Satanic fatherland were plotted and the recording took place at a local gig, which also featured new member Aries from french act Black Dementia on strings.
After a minitour with Danish Death Metal veterans Exmortem, a new video for the song ”Terror Soul” was shot and chopped by fellow fanatics.
Late 2005, rehearsals for a new album began and it was recorded, once again, in Vomit February 2006. In April 2006 the second album”The Devils Music – Songs of Death and Damnation” was released, again by Infernus Rex, receiving overwhelming reviews from the underground and metal media, both because of the well crafted songs, energetic production and the highly provocative and blasphemous cover artwork. The album sold quite well and got Horned Almighty playing several festivals in germany, sharing the stage with the likes of DHG, Lord Belial, Azaghal and many more…
The band’s performance on the United Metal Maniacs festival in Germany in 2007 was incidentally recorded and the true ferocity of the concert resulted in the ”Live Exsanguination” 10” live lp.
The third and latest album”Contaminating the Divine” took quite a bit longer to write than the previous albums. A lot more energy and time were put into crafting this ugly abomination and the effort paid off. Nine brutal and diverse hymns were recorded for the album and for the first time, the band recorded outside their shithole ”Vomit” and spent time in several studios tracking the album. Outside help was acquired for the mixing and mastering, which was handled by Jacob Bredahl (ex-Hatesphere) in his Smart’n’hard studio and the result was astonishing. Mixing the primitivism of Celtic Frost with the aggression of Discharge and the ugliness of Autopsy, all drenched in the eerie and disturbing rot of early nineties Black Metal. As one fan noted: ”This sounds like a fucking Missouri-class canon shot at the Vatican!”.
”Contaminating the Divine” was released in February 2009 as a joint effort by the two German labels Obscure Abhorrence and Art of Propaganda and received even more praise than its predecessor and got top reviews all around.

For Irish thrashers GAMA BOMB, file-sharing has proved to be an important and recurring topic of discussion.
Having released their 2009 album, TALES FROM THE GRAVE IN SPACE, online as a completely free download, GAMA BOMB’s strong feelings about file-sharing largely oppose the views of many other musicians and artists. TALES FROM THE GRAVE IN SPACE – which remains free to download to this day – has sold just as many physical copies of the album in the short time since its release as the band’s previous album has to date, indicating that the open availability of the album as a free download hasn’t in fact harmed the band’s sales.
PAUL McGUINNESS, manager for fellow Irish rockers U2, recently posted a lengthy article for GQ Magazine in which he discusses his views on the problems of file-sharing.
GAMA BOMB frontman PHILLY BYRNE has written an open letter to PAUL McGUINNESS in response to his article. An excerpt follows:
“U2’s manager Paul McGuinness’ recent article is well-reasoned, well-informed and commendable in its aims – though it’s crazily short-sighted. It falls at the last hurdle when envisioning future solutions to the problems file sharing causes for the music industry, and is filled with logical blind-spots on the current state of the business. He’s got the numbers right, but the headspace is all wrong.
“To his credit, Mr McGuinness is here wading into an argument that, as he notes, often involves untold abuse for those willing to stick their oar in. Furthermore, it’s one that doesn’t affect his untouchably profitable bread-and-butter, U2. So who am I to gainsay him?
“Last year my band Gama Bomb released their third album free of cost as a download with the permission of our record company, Earache Records. This, to my knowledge, makes us the first signed band ever to do so.
“We took this step because we personally consume music in this way and were aware our previous albums were largely being consumed as shared files. To release another CD in the traditional way seemed futile. Also, as a band playing a niche form of music on a small budget, we were aware of the potential PR power of such a move. The label agreed, we did it, and that’s why I feel qualified to dust off my soap box on this one.”

CRITERIA FOR A BLACK WIDOW, the 1999 album from Canadian melodic thrash metal pioneers ANNIHILATOR, has been reissued and is out now in Europe.
Following the recent release of ANNIHILATOR’s critically acclaimed, self-titled new album, Earache Records is reissuing six albums from the band’s illustrious back-catalogue. CRITERIA FOR A BLACK WIDOW is the second reissue in the series, with CARNIVAL DIABLOS also available now.
CRITERIA FOR A BLACK WIDOW featured the reunited original ANNIHILATOR line-up, including vocalist RANDY RAMPAGE. The album is available now on CD featuring two bonus tracks and a bonus guitar workshop video with JEFF WATERS, and comes housed in a custom slipcase. The album is also available for the first time on limited edition coloured vinyl LP.

British crossover thrashers SSS have recently returned home after completing their “Wreck and Annoy” headlining European tour and have posted a tour debrief on their blog page.

The name of SSS’s “Wreck and Annoy” tour also wasn’t without irony, as the band’s frontman, FOXY, broke his foot while skateboarding in Pinkafeld, Austria. That didn’t slow down the frontman, however, as he soldiered on for the remaining shows of the tour, performing each night on crutches.

‘The Crystal World’, the third studio album from Locrian, is an epic journey. Titled after JG Ballard’s 1964 novel that tells the story of a physician who specializes in leprosy sent to a remote African outpost to discover a jungle that is slowly crystallizing and encroaching upon everything it touches. Disc one comprises six tracks while disc two consists of one extended piece, ‘Extinction’, that picks up on the intensity of disc one and sustains it for close to an hour. On ‘The Crystal World’, Terence Hannum, and André Foisy, are joined by Steven Hess (On, Pan American, Ural Umbo) on percussion and electronics.
Hess’ contribution pushes Locrian deeper into the abyss of despair rendering a sound that is darker, bleaker, and engulfing than any of the group’s previous releases. Locrian continue the conceptual trajectory of blackened drone that the group initially embarked on during their first studio album ‘Drenched Lands’ (2009). Masters of layering, ‘The Crystal World’ finds the group manipulating tones and textures that transport the listener to an apocalyptic wasteland. At times, the layers are serene and somber, at other times they are chaotic.
Of Locrian’s three studio albums, ‘The Crystal World’ is the essential release, finding the band creating a sound all of their own. A sound that evades simplistic analogies to black metal, power-electronics, noise, or other categories. This is the album that will stun fans of the bands previous works with how far the group has come from their early releases. Vinyl edition out on Utech Records in 2011.
The group will be debuting material from this album at the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC on Thursday, Septebmer 9th. The group will share a stage with Burning Star Core and The Ocean.
The links between heavy metal, harsh noise and dark electronic drone should come as no surprise. Some of the best black metal records, after all, feel like half-still sonic smears, and the control of or chaos in feedback has inspired legions in every form. Even if the means are distinct, each of those genres revels in musical viscosity—who can be the heaviest, the meanest, the most exhausting with their sound? But few artists have exploited those intersections as vividly and explicitly as the aggressive, interstitial Chicago duo Locrian.
As Locrian, André Foisy and Terrence Hannum—and a constant flux of peers and friends—have been prolific for about four years, releasing a deluge of proper albums, CD-Rs, 7” records, cassettes and even an 8-track. But Locrian’s two 2010 LPs—Territories, a split release by four different labels, and The Crystal World, due in November on Utech Records—have pushed the band from the upstart experimental fringes into the domain of must-hears. Alternately eerie and irascible, Territories gets didactic in its exploration of those divides. On an 11-minute storm with the appropriately daunting name “Procession of Ancestral Brutalism,” Locrian gathers black metal ringleader Blake Judd of Nachtmystium, heavy metal saxophonist Bruce Lamont and power electronics legend Bruce Solotroff for one destructive trip. An exploration of clashing tones and structures, it’s one of the year’s most vivid, ponderous pieces of music, proclaiming possibilities for exploration rather than suggesting them. The Crystal World softens the focus a bit, scattering ghastly howls and relentless drums beneath walls of sound that seem to suffocate and swirl without ever really doing either. During closer “Elevators and Depths,” Locrian even adds circular acoustic guitar and violin. They wrap those layers around howls and noise that suggest an exorcism. It’s the sound of suspect redemption.
Today, AETERNITAS TENEBRARUM MUSIC FOUNDATION (ATMF) confirms the signing of infamous Norwegian squadron DISIPLIN, the brainchild of one WeltenFeind, who’s done time in such illustrious names as DISSECTION, SLAVIA, MYRKSKOG, and KOLDBRANN. The band has inked a three-album deal with ATMF, the first release of which will be entitled Radikale Randgruppe, slated for release sometime in November.
As the wolf-pack is approaching the new sacrifice, 10 years of history of black metal integrity and daring for DISIPLIN, Radikale Randgruppe will stand as a special anniversary album composed by totally new material, limited to 1000 copies to be released on Digibook format, and with the first 100 copies with a limited T-shirt. DISIPLIN’s martial monument Radikale Randgruppe won’t be re-pressed or re-released but will stay as a unique stone in the band’s legacy.
WeltenFeind comments on the union: “We’re proud to have this sharpened weapon of the pagan gods under our wing, moving from one of the most innovative labels, Moonfog. They’ve been an example of how Norwegian black metal should have been evolved instead of rooting on the memories. DISIPLIN are still there to take forward the idea of black metal as an extreme weapon instead of a un-offensive stereotype.”

The Italian symphonic heavy metal masters RHAPSODY OF FIRE have revealed the tracklist of the upcoming Mini CD “The Cold Embrace Of Fear – A Dark Romantic Symphony” to be released on October 15 via Nuclear Blast Records.

Looking at the title you can easily imagine that such long and epic song will show the most cinematic and orchestral side of our band, all our passion for the world of cinema we love so much and that always represented our main influence while composing Rhapsody’s music“, says Luca Turilli and adds: “Essentially it is a long huge song, sounding very symphonic, full of orchestral sections very soundtrack oriented, narrations and spoken parts. More than in other cases we tried to create a real movie atmosphere with very dynamic musical results, also thanks to the help of the English actors that gave voice to different charachters. You will just need to close your eyes and explore those new emotional dimensions we wrote the music for.“
The lyrics of this monumental, epic symphony is based on the “dark secret saga“ and represents a new chapter, directly connected with The Frozen Tears Of Angels.
Luca explains: “After the long journey to the icy frozen northlands at the borders of the known world, while facing concrete natural obstacles and the inner demons lying in the depths of their conscience, the five main charachters reach the ancient gothic fortress of Har-Kuun, a real monument of evil trapped between ice and snow, the mystic place where the Erian’s book could be finally found. ‘The Cold Embrace Of Fear’ tells about the entrance of those bravehearts in the ancestral world of Har-Kuun and the dramatic search for the holy book of the angels, only possible way to understand something more about the dark secret threatening the whole known world. Also in this case I liked to create particular “bridges“ connecting the new chapter of the saga with our modern life on the basis of symbolism, ancient wisdom and spiritual evolution. To someone who knows something about modern psychology and the study of the different “self“, the hidden geometries and gothic labyrinths of Har-Kuun will reveal themselves very clearly.“
Once again Christopher Lee was chosen for the spoken parts as a main narrator.
“We couldn’t imagine to release something like this without his fundamental partecipation. Sir Lee is one member of Rhapsody Of Fire‘s family since a lot of time and we love him not only as an actor but also as man. Because of his great and majestic personality he has surely the aura of a king of the ancient times.
